elcome to the January/February edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. Like many of you, I get older each year. This year I became properly old, and soon set about contracting as many age-related diseases and conditions as possible. I also made a positive effort to be even more negative than usual. I bought a walking stick, not for any postural problems but simply so that I might wave it menacingly at anyone under the age of 55 who might get in my way. To make this more effective, I’ve given my voice a bit of a geriatric twang, and have developed a lovable habit of halting halfway across zebra crossings. It’s all worked out swimmingly. The other day I got on a bus (for free – I didn’t want to go anywhere) and found someone in the reserved seat. I waved my walking stick and muttered under my breath “Go on! Get out of it!” My long-term aims are to sit pointlessly on buses, go on interminably about declining standards, throw things at pigeons, burn saucepans on a regular basis, moan about everything, moan about nothing sometimes, and generally become even less likeable than I was last year. It’s going really well.

IN THIS WORLD NOTHING IS CERTAIN BUT DEATH AND TAXES – PART 2 In the second part of our two-part article on estate planning we will take a brief look at some of the structures that allow us to reduce inheritance tax, or ‘IHT’ on an estate. In a short article, we can only briefly touch on each topic and with each there are many intricacies to be considered. Only individual advice can establish if something is appropriate to you. Inheritance tax is a one-off tax paid on the value of an estate (i.e. your assets) over £325,000, the current ‘nilrate band’. The Net estate, after deducting exemptions, reliefs and nil-rate band is taxed at 40% (or 36%, if 10% or more of your net estate is left to charity).
Trusts: Bare, discretionary, flexible interests – although there are complex rules surrounding the use of trust, they remain a useful tool in helping pass wealth down the generations. Early use, as well as in a Will can help reduce the tax burden. They can also exert some control over how assets are used. Trust can be administered by families with appropriate advice and are particularly useful to blended families where many interests need to be fairly served.

Pensions – new pensions are now able to be part of your legacy (to a spouse, children and beyond). Reviews on pensions established before 2015 are essential to ensure that the new laws can be applied to your pension pot. Contracts before this time may not offer the facilities that new contracts offer. Pensions offer a potential £1million per person legacy that is outside of the inheritance tax regime.
Life Assurance – taking out whole of life cover and excluding this from your estate by using a trust, can allow you to provide a lump sum to pay for any IHT that is due. It can help reduce the assessable estate and ensure funds are available and ‘liquid’ when the bill arrives. Nothing costs more than acting in error and estate planning remains a topic that is full of myths and mistakes. Advice from a qualified adviser can save your family much more than it costs.

MALMSMEAD AND THE DOONE VALLEY or Cafes, combes and Kajagoogoo

T
his is another story of the quitegoods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade.
Well, the Doone Valley in Exmoor is a well-loved, well-known, well-trodden trail. It’s well pretty, as well. But to different travellers, amidst the

MALMSMEAD FORD heather and the gorse, it holds different associations. There are those to whom the wild and rugged scenery speaks of the romantic tale of Lorna Doone, of course. To others, the walk itself is a spiritual journey, leaving behind little Malmsmead, the tourist shop and the café by the ford, and heading into the remote moorland. As the sides of the valley steepen, they seem to squeeze out the noises of everyday life. Their slopes shelter us from our everyday cares. But for most of us, of course, the Doone Valley is irrevocably associated with Thymus X Citriodorus. Let’s face it, in Minehead they speak of little else. They sometimes call it Doone Valley Thyme. This, of course, paves the way for a whole series of puns, and, my, how the whole family laugh when papa points at the herb and asks “What thyme is it?”. Or “I just can’t find the thyme.” Or “There’s plenty of thyme.” I’m so glad that my family never took me there. I went there when I was grown-up, and devoid of any sense of humour, which is the correct way of completing gruelling hikes, preferably in mist with a huge rucksack. R D Blackmore is the one-hit-wonder (the Kajagoogoo, if you will) of Victorian literature. Few have read any of his less well-known works, and this, in my opinion, is because they aren’t very good. Lorna Doone, however, conjures up the landscape with all its beauty and foreboding, and

THE DOONE VALLEY tells the tale of the villainous Doone family, murderers and robbers for generations past, who dwelt at the head of the valley. Blackmore spent much of his youth in Devon and Somerest but, as an adult, lived around London. He returned to Exmoor, however, for a holiday in 1865, where he carried out much research for his forthcoming novel. Stories of the Doones had entered local folklore and Blackmore doubtless heard these tales and wove them into Lorna Doone. Walk away from Malmsmead alongside Badgworthy Water, pass through the twisted trees and up into the valley. The moors above hem you in until it’s impossible not to feel haunted by the ghosts of the evil Doones or of Lorna herself, sitting in solitary thought by the water’s edge. When you get back to Malmsmead, conversely, there is a palpable lightening of the mood, as though one has stepped out of a darkened and into the hubbub of a metropolis. You haven’t. Malmsmead consists of a café and a shop and a packhorse bridge by a ford, the latter two being the subject of about a gazillion photos. The village itself sits in a combe, and paths to the north and east lead out onto the moorlands above. To walk here, amidst the heather and the bracken and beneath an enormous sky, is to follow the same tracks that were used by farmers and traders in centuries past. Here, too, the January & February 2018

Doones might have been waiting in ambush. But the mood is lighter. The Bristol Channel floats on the horizon to the north and away to the west Great Hangman hill pinpoints Ilfracombe and a different style of holiday. In every other direction, rolling green slopes mask the deep gash in the landscape of the Doone Valley, as dressing hides a wound in flesh. The funny thing about Exmoor is that it isn’t the greatest landscape, nor the best coast, nor the wildest history, nor does it hold the most magnificent castles or the most perfect villages. It’s just that it’s maybe the runner-up in all of these things. If holidays were judged as decathlons are, Exmoor would win by virtue of its all-rounder status. It’s not the fiercest flame, it’s true, but it always imparts a warming glow.
