W
elcome to the November/December edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.
I was thinking of buying a thing recently. Naturally, I bought What Thing (the monthly magazine for buyers of things) to decide which thing to get. The analysis was good but the verdict seemed a tad non-committal, so I turned to the internet, that vault of unasked-for opinion. Well, there’s CompareTheThing, ThingsCompared, ConfusedAboutThings, ThingSupermarket. So much to choose from. But, as it happens, I used to be really good at comparing… well… things. When I was only six, I successfully compared several sets of Lego. And I’ve been comparing things ever since. Most recently, I compared my life to that of some of my more successful friends.
For all the latest Community Events
I wouldn’t want to sound conceited, but I’m dead good at comparing things. And so it is that I’ve decided to set up CompareComparisonWebsites for anybody confused by the swathes of unnecessary comparisons of boring things.

And back to the original dilemma. What did I end up buying? Why, not a thing.
David Young

DICTIONARIES or Latin, literally and lager STORY: DAVID YOUNG
A
really useful joke, which always goes down well, is to call out to someone, a gardener or a painter, “Oi, mate, missed a bit!” You’d be surprised at the number of good friends I’ve made this way. I like to think that someone played this joke on the person who wrote the first English dictionary. Just as he (or she) got to the end, zygote or something, and as he (or she) prepared to put down their quill, someone snuck up and said, “Oi, mate, missed a bit. You forgot aardvark!” How hilarious. They’d have to start over!

SAMUEL JOHNSON But to find out whether this happened, we need to examine the history of the dictionary. My personal history started at age five, when, for Christmas, instead of the expected gift of some lego-based action-man meccano thing, I was given a dictionary. I did a good job at hiding my disappointment. “Why, papa,” I said. “How delightful! A list of long words with their etymology! Whooppee!” My younger brother, who’d been given his very first book of logarithms, did not help. He decided to ruin my present by telling me the end. FYI, spoiler alert, it’s ‘zythum’, an ancient Egyptian beer, which was of little interest to a five-year-old. I mainly drank lager. So who wrote the first English dictionary? And why? Who was it that first thought they needed a list of words, in careful alphabetical order, complete with definition, etymology and a guide to pronunciation that often includes the bizarre back-to-front ‘e’ – the schwa – Ə – pronounced uh, as in “uh, what’s a schwa?” Turns out, the whole thing starts with a dispute over plagiarism. Not a thrilling stand-off, and up there with privet hedge disputes as unlikely candidate for feature film epic, although the spinoff ‘Dude, You Stole My Lexicon’ may have legs. By the 18th century, there were word-lists for other languages. They were called glossaries, and the word dictionary was only coined for a book to help with Latin diction. English word-books did
