elcome to the November/December edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park.

I was thinking of buying a thing recently. Naturally, I bought What Thing (the monthly magazine for buyers of things) to decide which thing to get. The analysis was good but the verdict seemed a tad non-committal, so I turned to the internet, that vault of unasked-for opinion. Well, there’s CompareTheThing, ThingsCompared, ConfusedAboutThings, ThingSupermarket. So much to choose from. But, as it happens, I used to be really good at comparing… well… things. When I was only six, I successfully compared several sets of Lego. And I’ve been comparing things ever since. Most recently, I compared my life to that of some of my more successful friends.

I wouldn’t want to sound conceited, but I’m dead good at comparing things. And so it is that I’ve decided to set up CompareComparisonWebsites for anybody confused by the swathes of unnecessary comparisons of boring things.

And back to the original dilemma. What did I end up buying? Why, not a thing.

really useful joke, which always goes down well, is to call out to someone, a gardener or a painter, “Oi, mate, missed a bit!” You’d be surprised at the number of good friends I’ve made this way. I like to think that someone played this joke on the person who wrote the first English dictionary. Just as he (or she) got to the end, zygote or something, and as he (or she) prepared to put down their quill, someone snuck up and said, “Oi, mate, missed a bit. You forgot aardvark!” How hilarious. They’d have to start over!

My personal history started at age five, when, for Christmas, instead of the expected gift of some lego-based action-man meccano thing, I was given a dictionary. In this world, nothing is certain but death and taxes In this first of a two-part article on estate planning we will take a brief look at some of the main allowances and techniques used to reduce inheritance tax, or ‘IHT’. In a short article, we can only briefly touch on each issue and with each there are many intricacies to be considered. Only individual advice can establish if something is appropriate to you. Inheritance tax is a one-off tax paid on the value of an estate (i.e. your assets) over £325,000, the current ‘nilrate band’. The Net estate, after deducting exemptions, reliefs and nil-rate band is taxed at 40% (or 36%, if 10% or more of your net estate is left to charity). Residential nil-rate band – available when a residence is passed on death to direct descendants i.e. a child (including a step-child, adopted or foster child) of the deceased and their lineal descendants. Buy-to-Lets do not qualify. This is currently £100,000 increasing to £175,000 by 2021. On estates over £2 million there is a taper to reduce this allowance. Inherited Allowances – the unused balance of either of the above ‘bands’ can be passed to a spouse. On the

second death of a couple the total allowance will be £1 million (by 2021). Gifts – you may not have to pay IHT on your assets if you give them away. Certain gifts are IHT free; gifting excess income being one of the lesser known IHT free areas. Generally, larger gifts are known as ‘potentially exempt transfers’ and the better known ‘7-year rule’ applies to these. Reliefs – there are number of reliefs and allowances that apply to businesses (you own, or have shares in) and Business Property Relief (BPR) is an area commonly used by clients when putting together an IHT strategy. Other reliefs can apply to specialist assets e.g. Agricultural Property Relief, Woodland Relief, and Heritage assets. Specialist advice is necessary if planning is undertaken in these areas. In our next article, we will look at the more commonly used strategies of Trusts, Pensions and Life Assurance, and the role they can play in reducing IHT. THE ALLOTMENTS – ‘OUR LITTLE WORLD’

etween family gatherings, endless cups of tea and crops ranging from runner beans to strawberries, pumpkins to potatoes, clearly there is much that occurs within the allotments of the Chingford and Waltham Forest area. Not only are the allotments the perfect places for the avid gardener, but they also present the opportunity for a group of people who share a common interest to form their own little community: “our little world”. The allotments provide the means to grow delicious food, as well as being a positive and beneficial activity for the environment.

Asparagus, onions, kale, marrow, beetroot, tomatoes, even miniature apple, plum and cherry

trees: the list goes on. For some members of this community, the produce grown here has become a significant part of their lives. “I have not bought potatoes in twenty-five years. I grow everything I need”. But what encouraged, not only this hobby, but this opportunity for physical activity and socialising? Members John Bailey and Primo Sartori have shared tea and gardening expertise here for the past 15 years, with other members such as Nigel Stothard more recently joining the community. No matter the length of time, these eager gardeners share this as a common hobby, and work together to keep their little environment at the best it can possibly be. Plot owner Chris states, “I used to grow my own vegetables in the garden when I lived in the country. I liked growing things myself”. The Seventies encouraged a self-sufficiency movement, popularised by the famous sitcom, ‘The Good Life’, which is why the allotments are so appealing to those both with previous experience of growing their own crops, as well as those who have had an interest but never been able to do so in their own homes. The allotments provide all the outdoor space needed for this pastime. Being out in the open air as opposed to being confined to a sweaty gym is surely a more appealing form of exercise, not to mention the tea breaks that a gym class certainly would not allow. There is more that occurs here than simply growing and harvesting various vegetables, “this is a social gathering as well as a pastime.” The set-up is as follows; each member is able to own as many plots as they would like, provided there are plots available for them to expand on their own. The “bunker”, as it is known, now a place to store harvested vegetables, machinery and tools, but was once a street air raid shelter during the Second World War. A small yet important part of the history of the E4 and Waltham Forest area. Now it contains bathroom facilities, electricity and storage, but the foundations of the shelter remain as they were during the war. Finally, the plot owners have worked together to transform an

Still there’s more. A summer barbecue as well as a Guy Fawkes bonfire are yet more opportunities for the members of the allotment to come together with their families and friends, an opportunity to celebrate all their hard work within the allotment. Food, wine and above all, good company at each of these organised events. With Bonfire Night fast approaching, these plot holders are busy planning with friends and family whose responsibility it will be to supply the tea bags, the wood to burn on the fire and the sparklers. Growing fruits and vegetables, physical exercise as well as being part of such a welcoming group of people, the allotments within the E4 and Waltham Forest area provide the means for each of these. It is an environment to be practical, creative and active. As described by some of the plot owners themselves, “it is a little jewel of peace and quiet, of nice people,” a fine addition to the E4 area.
