elcome to the September/October edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. I like to enrich my life by doing online surveys. Not only do I get rewarded richly for my input in the development of such future world-beaters as blackcurrant-flavoured lager, but I also get paid. The questions, in themselves, are revealing. What they reveal to me is that either I’m out of touch with the world, or, more likely, the world is now so bonkers that I’ve left it happily. Today I was asked how long I spent taking photographs of my breakfast before putting the images on social media. One had to tick the relevant box. There was a box for 60 minutes. Really? Someone out there spends an hour photographing their corn flakes before posting the images online. Then, which is worse, they do it again tomorrow. Different corn flakes? More milk? The ether is so full of drivel that it threatens to poison even those who try not to breathe it in. This morning, my corn flakes fell into the bowl in the shape of an angel. But there are no pictures of my breakfast in this month’s edition. I just wasn’t happy with the lighting.

P
icking football teams was always a humiliating experience. A scrawny wee scrap of a thing, I was even scrawnier when I was seven. And, wedged between two big lummoxes (Smith Major and Smith Even Bigger) I was always picked last. I could have been the pocket-sized genius, the Lionel Messi of his era. But there was this preconception that I was no such thing. This might have been fair, in truth, given that my main tactic, when the ball came at me, was to run away, yelling “Anybody else’s!”
In a way, I remind myself of Broadstairs. Standing on the Kent coast, between the 8

towering resorts of Margate and Ramsgate, little Broadstairs seems hemmed in and overlooked. Yet, much like me, it has a unique charm: it seems quaintly out-of-date, and sometimes smells of fish, but, at heart, it’s lovely. Charles Dickens was of the same opinion, (about Broadstairs, not about me). He stayed for many summers in a house overlooking the bay, writing David Copperfield in between coastal walks and pints at pubs. The house he used is these days a hotel and a museum, and you can sit in his chair in his study with that same view over Viking Bay, waiting for the inspiration for that novel. I must have sat there for a good two minutes, waiting, but no inspiration came, so I went for a coastal walk. And some pints in pubs. Broadstairs has not changed greatly since the nineteenth century. There are the obvious differences, like cars and a bristling forest of selfie-sticks around the harbour. But the narrow lanes and the wrought iron on the balconies of guest-houses, which look imperiously down on the curving bay, which bends, in turn, around to a small harbour – these all would look familiar to Dickens, sitting on his chair and scanning the view with

binoculars. His binoculars, incidentally, are still there on his desk, looking as though they might still hold in their lenses the images of bathing machines and Victorians in hilarious swimsuits. A coastal path northwards climbs steeply from the harbour and winds beneath Dickens’s house (which has earned itself the misnomer Bleak House, although he wrote that novel elsewhere about a house that is also elsewhere). It is easy enough to follow the coast round to Margate, across sandy bays and DUMPTON GAP beneath white cliffs, sometimes by roads and sometimes along a concrete parents retired, which goes by the name of promenade. Margate itself is a brash Dumpton. When they told me they were juxtaposition, with noisy games arcades vying moving there, I thought that they were being for attention with the new Turner metaphorical. Contemporary, a modern art gallery on the seafront. You can eat greasy chips on its steps Jammed in between these resorts, the modest whilst simultaneously pontificating in a charms of little Broadstairs seem even more enticing. There’s a bandstand above the bay, pompous voice about art. which glances across at Bleak House on the From Broadstairs, in the other direction, the other side, the two old buildings colluding to coast romps over chalky cliffs to Ramsgate, guard the town from excess. From the passing, as it goes, the town to which my bandstand, a terrifying lift can take you down to the beach. It might be wiser to walk by the gently sloping path, down to the bay with its boat swings and beach huts, and a bouncy castle with a giraffe coming out of it. Bit odd. In the evening, the town is quieter. Trippers return to their hotels and camp-sites, the narrow streets empty, and the ghosts of Victorian times drift down the alleys and along the seafront, looking for their bathing machines. Thank you, world, for not picking me. Broadstairs and I are both happy to go BALCONIES ON THE PROMENADE unnoticed, wedged between the Smiths.
