elcome to the July/August edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. Recently I was made to recall our seventh television. The salesperson told us it was a smart TV, and I agreed. “It’s dead smart” I said. It only took us a week to find BBC1, and from that point on we were delighted. We’d go to bed at night and place its little remote on a silken pillow. I’d rise early to rush downstairs to see the TV and I’d hold it in my arms for a moment and breathe in its plastic perfume. The days seemed to go by as in a dream. Then, on its first birthday, it went wonky. Splotches of magenta appeared, frames froze, images flickered. From being smart, it had become kind of stupid. That very same day, the warranty expired. I know just how that TV felt. I recently turned 60 and woke up with a torn knee ligament, a bleeding nose and an adolescent zit. Would that human kind could extend its warranty on health. My wife is shopping for a new television.

WEST ESSEX GOLF CLUB HOSTS THE 2017 LONDON OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

was rather rudely awoken by the nearby sound of a Cape Hunting Dog howling. A zebra looked up cautiously from the watering hole, which I could see through the flap of the tent as dawn broke. Outside, embers still smoldered in the pit where our African guide had cooked for us last night. I thought for a moment of home, then called myself a silly thing for getting homesick. We were only in Kent, after all, in an overnight lodge in a zoo.

The zoo, as an institution, has its detractors, but we shan’t debate these issues today. Suffice it to say, there are arguments on both sides, and the worst excesses of zoos are a thing of the past. I remember, growing up in London, the grim sight of miserable creatures languishing in squalid conditions, underfed and bored. But the terraced slums of Paddington are a thing of the past. Father

LION AT WHIPSNADE would lead us briskly onward, through Regent’s Park to the zoo. Here, too, conditions were poor. The big cats were confined behind bars in a long smelly room of cages, to be allowed out on occasions into an outdoor cage with slightly less space. King John of England kept a menagerie in the Tower of London, which was opened to the public centuries later in the reign of Elizabeth I. In the 18th century, admission could be gained for free if you could offer a dog or cat for the lions to eat. Apparently, this rule no longer applies, which ruined my day when I went to a zoo the other day, but it cheered poor Fido up no end. Eventually, the collection at the Tower was moved into Regent’s Park. The fashion at the time was for entertainment of the public (at which the ants still fail miserably) but the new London Zoo had a scientific role. So although the zoo was founded in 1828, it only opened to the public in 1847. There have been some bizarre exhibits in zoos

With our increased reliance on computers to store important documents, photo, music etc. we need to bear in mind that although computer are very reliable these days that data you have is stored on the hard disk of your PC which has mechanical parts which can go wrong. We may delete by accident a file that we need. Hard Drives which are now 1TB or greater are often partitioned and recovery software (return to Factory State) is stored there which after a while becomes out of date. And of course we can get our PC or Laptop stolen. So we need to backup our Hard Drive to an external device and store it away from our PC. HANDSWORTH PRE-SCHOOL

We are a community based Preschool just relocated to Highams Park Baptist Church, Cavendish Road, Highams Park, E4 9NG (we were previously based at the United Reformed Church, Malvern Avenue, Highams Park). We are open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9.00 am to Noon. For children 3 and over the Pre-school is free as they are funded by the Local Authority. Children under 3 pay a fee per session of £14.00. We do also offer limited funded 2 year old places. The Pre-school has been running for over 30 years in Highams Park and is a lovely community based Pre-school. Our website is www.handsworthpreschool.co.uk
