elcome to the May/June edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. I’m going to let you into one of journalism’s most closely guarded secrets. There are times, just a few, when there is no huge story to relate. In an effort to fill the page, sometimes, occasionally, not often at all, some reporters resort to non-stories, which they justify with the use of the words ‘possibly’ and ‘almost’, and qualify by mentioning vaguely ‘experts’. This is now fashionably referred to as ‘post-truth’, as though, by giving it a daft enough name, it makes it alright. For example, the other day I almost won the lottery. Possibly, I would have won it if I’d bought a ticket, an expert said. Last year, we almost had the warmest January day ever recorded, apart from all the Januarys when it was warmer, and it almost snowed in summer, but didn’t. Possibly it will be the coldest summer ever, this year, according to experts. It’s a useful device that enables me to make the most alarming statements without having to justify anything that I say. According to experts, this Editor’s Letter is possibly almost the cleverest thing ever written perhaps.

T
his is another story of the quitegoods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade. And the biggest mountain in Switzerland is one that very few have heard of.
There is no barometer of the public mind quite as reliable as the pub quiz. It is for this reason alone that I spend countless hours, nay, days, in pubs, hoping that there will be a quiz. Sometimes there is, and I’m able to determine at last just what the public knows and what it thinks. And it turns out that we all know ever such a lot about astrology

WOODLAND PATH BENEATH DOM and TV shows, which is reassuring. But there is one question that stumps all but the sharpest of minds. What is the highest mountain in Switzerland, and only in Switzerland, which is to say that it is not also in Italy? The answer (for I see you reaching for your pub quiz crib sheet) is Dom. Not a very exciting name. It lacks the allure of, say, Gspaltenhorn. It has not the romantic associations of the Eiger. Dom. Abrupt, brusque even. Dom. It’s so un-famous that it’s about the twentieth thing that comes up when you google Dom. I hope it doesn’t google itself, for, as we all know, that way lies disappointment. Monte Rosa is higher than Dom, but, like a true cosmopolitan, a bit of it lies in Italy too. The Matterhorn is more shapely, but not as high. Dom. It doesn’t sound challenging, even. Dom. It sounds silly when you say it too often. It sounds like a rather dull hillock in Shropshire, Dom, that you might yomp up with your spaniel. But Dom is 14,911 feet high, way beyond the reach of spaniel paws. Its name derives from the German word for cathedral. And it sits between the valleys of Zermatt to the north-west and Saas Fee to the south-east, from which it can gaze at the Matterhorn, jealous perhaps of its notoriety, but assured in the knowledge that it is taller than its glamorous neighbour. Even if nobody in any British pub knows it, Dom knows. That’s what matters. Saas Fee itself is a small village high on its own

plateau and watched over by Dom, which here presents a towering and precipitous face. From the busy Zermatt side it is a riot of snowy cones, each climbing eagerly, one above another to the summit, but, to experienced climbers, the ascent from here is not the hardest, requiring an overnight stay in the Dom hut. But above quiet Saas Fee, Dom stands like a gaunt giant. Cable cars on this side can take the casual sightseer closer, but from their termini the ascent towards the summit is perilous, with or without a spaniel. Should your pub quiz be particularly strenuous, I’ll furnish you with a few useful facts. Dom is composed mostly of gneiss. They’re bound to ask that. It was climbed for the first time in 1858 by the Reverend John Llewelyn-Davies, using the northwest ridge on the Zermatt side. He didn’t take a spaniel. It took a few more years for anybody to
conquer the menacing east face above Saas Fee, which was eventually climbed in 1875. The first ascent on skis was made in 1906 by Arnold Lunn - I don’t know much about skiing, but I could have sworn you were meant to go in a broadly downwards direction, so I think that maybe Arnold Lunn couldn’t find his spaniel. Makes sense when you think about it. That’s you all sorted out for the next quiz. I just hope that Swiss Mountains is a category, although I have a funny feeling that it’ll be “Which Coronation Street actor is a Gemini?” Anyway, should you win that pitcher of lager, chink your glasses together so that they make a resounding Dom sort of a noise. Dom. Highest mountain in Switzerland. Not the most famous. Not the most romantic. Just the biggest flame, the one that nobody notices.

Waltham Forest Probus Club
M
embers of the club are often asked “What is Probus - What does it mean - Who are members?� The word Probus is derived from the first three letters of PROfessional BUSiness and is a club for retired professional gentlemen. There are many such clubs across the UK, including adjacent boroughs to Chingford. The activities of these clubs is reported in a quarterly magazine, issued to all members. The first clubs were convened in 1965 by a Rotarian in Welwyn Garden City and was initially called Campus Club, being the name of the venue where they met. Since then they have expanded across the country with the current number exceeding 1800. There are also clubs in many overseas countries, from Argentina to Zimbabwe.
The Waltham Forest Probus Club was formed in 1976, its founder members comprising a Bank Manager, a Consultant Physician, an Insurance Broker, a Chartered Engineer and a Building Society Manager. Our present membership includes a Civil Servant, a Builder, a Company Director, a Stock Broker, an

CLUB PRESIDENT FLANKED BY THE COMMITTEE Accountant, a Chief Engineer and many others of varied experiences. The basic purpose of the club is to provide a regular gathering of persons who in retirement value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and of a similar level of interest. Since its formation the club has over the years met in a variety of locations before finally arriving at The Royal Forest Hotel Chingford, where it meets on the third Monday of each month. During each meeting which commences at 12.30pm the members have the opportunity of meeting friends, renewing acquaintances, having a drink or maybe two, followed by lunch after which a guest speaker will give a talk, the subjects covering a wide range of topics. During the year a number of outside events are arranged, subject to the wishes of the members. Over the past years these have included; visits to Bletchley Enigma Centre, Duxford Airdrome, City Museum and Copt Hall. Planned events for 2017 include pub lunches in September, River Lea boat trip and bowls matches at Loughton and Ainsley Wood. In November each year a Ladies Lunch is arranged for members and guests ,this is a popular event and is well supported. In December an Xmas lunch is arranged, again for members and guests which is also well attended . The club is administered by a committee elected from its members and consists of President, Secretary, Treasurer, Speaker secretary, Almoner, and two committee members. The Annual General meeting is held in October when new committee members are proposed and elected.

FINAL SALARY PENSIONS
I’m a member of the Barclays 1964 Pension Scheme (Final Salary) and have been provided a transfer quote of over £800,000. This seems very high. Should I take up this option?
Many companies (particularly banks and insurance companies) are offering transfer values that are far higher than in previous years. Therefore, it is an excellent time to review your options. As your transfer value is more than £30,000 you will be required to seek independent financial advice if you choose to transfer. The decision to transfer away from a Final Salary Pension should not be taken lightly. There are many factors to consider. These include the size of the tax free lump sum, flexibility of pension withdrawals, loss of guaranteed pension and death benefits to name just a few.
I’m a member of a Final Salary Pension Scheme and I am concerned that my children will not be able to inherit the pension. Is this true? Would the position change if I was to transfer my Final Salary Pension into a Personal Pension?
It would be important to check your scheme’s rules. However, most final salary pension schemes offer a small provision for children until they are 18 years old (or 23 if they are in full-time education). If you were to transfer to a Personal Pension, you would be able to pass the pension fund to your children by way of nomination in the event of your death. However, there are many other factors in deciding if this is the best course of action. Therefore, we would strongly recommend that you seek independent financial advice.
You should not take any action until you have taken independent advice, as any decisions involving a transfer, once made, are usually irrevocable and will have a lasting impact on your future retirement provision. SUNDAYBEST SCOOTERFEST
to be held on the 16th July, between the hours of 10am to 5pm. Abridge Village Hall & Grounds. This comprises of a static scooter Display (approx. 300 of). Two Live Bands plus DJ’s to supply music. Food Stalls, clothes and accessories stalls, collectables of the 60s & 70s. Also scooter parts stalls. All food stalls are required to have hygiene and public liability
certificates. All other stalls are required to have public liability and those casuals who do not are covered by our own public liability. A license bar is provided by Abridge Village Hall on their premises of which all proceeds go to themselves and which they hold a license for. A registered nurse will be on site in a designated area. A raffle is held tickets sold from a raffle “tent” etc, with printed tickets with the necessary license on and prizes etc. The event is to provide a “Fun Day” for all ages and after covering all expenses all monies go to charities of our choice, THE ESSEX & HERTS AIR AMBULANCE, MILL GROVE CHRISTIAN CHARITY. Miniature Steam Train Rides in Chingford's Ridgeway Park Every Sunday & Bank Holiday afternoon from 2pm to 5:30pm during the summer (April until October) train rides are available at 50p or ÂŁ1 depending on the track (1000 foot long 5" raised level track and a 3000 foot long 7Âź" ground level track). During late July and August (school holidays), rides are also available on Wednesday afternoons 2:00pm - 4:30pm. Private hire events can also be arranged.
