elcome to the March/April edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. If the internet has taught us anything it is that we have an insatiable desire to parade our every move in front of everybody else, whether they care or not. By some new Law of Nature, the more inane an event, the greater its coverage. The other day, for example, I was in a supermarket. Being a social sort of chap, I thought that the rest of the world would be keen to follow my exploits, and duly took photos of everything in my basket, as well as some hilariously posed selfies with the check-out staff and another picture with a rather bewildered member of the public with whom I felt I’d established a rapport. I then added some clever captions. “Wow, can’t believe price of carrot!” “Me and new besty Les having laugh in shampoo aisle!” I was then fortunate enough to be able to post these messages on no less than 12 different social media platforms. What a wonderful world we live in. All these pictures can be found on pages 37-107 of this magazine, if Les doesn’t go through with that threat of legal action. Lolz.

Trading Standards warning: don’t get misled by cheap energy bill promises
E
ssex Trading Standards are warning of cold callers selling supposed money saving central heating systems. In reality the cost to install the systems will often massively outweigh the money you will save on reduced energy costs.
Essex residents have been quoted between £5,000 and £15,000 for the cost to purchase and install devices. Even in the unlikely event it saved the average household 20% of its annual gas bill, it would take at best many decades to recover the initial cost, and more likely the cost will never be recovered. Homeowners would benefit more from investing in good quality controls, thermostatic

radiator valves, energy efficient circulators or a power clean of their existing system. In addition, energy bills could potentially be reduced by registering with the Essex Energy Switch – a free, no obligation collective auction for competitive energy rates. The scheme is open now and all residents need to know is their current tariff and consumption of energy in kWh or spend. Cllr Anne Brown, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Corporate and Communities said: “Residents should seek independent advice before purchasing these products and, as ever, always say no to cold callers. If you are concerned call the national Trading Standards Helpline on 03454 04 05 06.”

THE ALPHABET or Rusks, Romans and Regret STORY: DAVID YOUNG
I
remember learning the alphabet. It came to me as easily as… well… A,B,C. I learnt it when I was 2, from my father, straight after my geometry class, and before milk and rusks, after which we went straight onto the microbiology exam. Happy times. It struck me at the time that a lettering system for conveying messages must necessarily have evolved from an earlier, more graphic way of communicating.
“Father,” I said, as I dipped my rusk in the warm, frothy milk, “I presume that an earlier, more graphic way of communicating must necessarily have pre-dated the lettering system which we have just studied.” “Obviously,” he replied. “And by the way, Young nobody likes a Smarty Pants.” It was only in later life that I returned to the idea. When I was 3 I learned to write hieroglyphs (fluently) and again I wondered how these drawings had given way to letters representing the sounds of words. Again, my father had no time for my childish ideas. “I suggest, Young, that you wait for technology to invent some kind of electronic encyclopedia, and then you can indulge your fanciful theories. Now eat your rusk for we are to study nuclear physics before lunch.” Most of us have an idea that Egyptian hieroglyphs consist of images (ox, or fish, or pharaoh but probably not rusks) which, in sequence, tell a story. These are ideograms. Rarer words were depicted by an early alphabet, consisting entirely of consonants, or phonograms.
PRINT BLOCKS
By about 1800BC, a script was in use to represent the dialect of Semitic-speaking workers in Egypt. The various alphabets currently used in Europe can trace their ancestry back to this script, which developed in time into both a Phoenician and, subsequently, an Aramaic system of consonants. These systems are not strictly speaking alphabets and have been assigned the fetching title ‘abjads’. The Aramaic abjad formed the basis for many of the scripts now used in Asia and was the official script of the Persian Empire in 700BC. The Greek alphabet was the first known version to use vowel sounds as well as the consonants. Vowel sounds were necessary in Greek to distinguish between words (in English, for example, to differentiate between risk and rusk). The Greeks used some redundant consonantal characters from the Phoenician abjad for their vowels, which might seem lazy until you try

making your own alphabet from scratch. I guess that it also meant that they could continue to use early Alphabetti Spaghetti without having to fish out the ALPHABET SPAGHETTI obsolete bits. From this, derived the Latin alphabet which is the basis of what we use today. The tribe known as the Latins, who lived in Italy before the Roman Empire, adopted the Greek alphabet and modified it, dropping unused sounds and adding in new ones of their own such as Q. Later, after the conquests of Alexander the Great, Greek words entered the Latin vocabulary and new letters were needed, so that Y and Z were tagged onto the end of the alphabet. The alphabet as we know it has been at the centre of communication of all media as they
develop, from early printing through to the text messages that we all know and love. And it is here, at the very peak of our evolution, that humans seem to be turning away from the alphabet in their messages and slotting in modern hieroglyphs with increasingly nuanced messages. One day somebody will trace the history of the emoticon and the emoji. 20 years ago you might have been able to put a smiley face at the end of a message. Now, thanks to progress, you can include a face that says that, whilst you have regrets, you are essentially at peace with the world. Maybe there will eventually be an emoji for rusks and milk, and we will have come full circle.

FURNITURE TIPS AND ADVICE THREATS TO WOOD Woodworm his is the common name for several wood-boring beetles that lay eggs in crevices of woodwork. The eggs hatch out as larvae that tunnel their way through the wood. The adults emerge as beetles through ‘wormholes’ on the surface, and lay eggs so that the life cycle is repeated unless checked.
T
Treatment: Proprietary products are effective if used repeatedly until no fresh holes or tell-tale powder is seen. Some timbers, for example pine, walnut, elm and beech, and most sapwoods, are more vulnerable than others. Mahogany and teak are virtually immune. In general, it is best to avoid pieces that are badly riddled, but it is difficult to furnish a home with antiques – or even with modern furniture – without incurring the risk to some extent. Keeping furniture clean and wellpolished helps to remove the eggs. The main problems encountered when treating woodworm are identifying the species involved, deciding whether the infestation is still active, and deciding which timbers have been structurally weakened and need replacing. All of these factors will influence the type of treatment carried out (if any). For this reason, we would recommend that a survey is carried out by an experienced member of staff from Abbey Antiques whenever an active woodworm infestation is suspected. Central Heating Furniture, especially if veneered, suffers from lack of moisture in the air. To avoid splits, cracks and
the lifting of veneers, provide adequate and consistent humidification. Simple humidifiers hung on panel radiators provide excellent protection. For your comfort, as well as to protect your furniture, use a humidifier in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer to keep the relative humidity at 25 to 35 percent. Avoid placing furniture directly in front of radiators, heat runs or fireplaces. Don't expose hardwood furniture to continuous direct sunlight. Draw the curtains occasionally. Store table leaves as close as possible to the table. Keep them in an upstairs closet rather than in a damp basement, so that the table leaves are adjusting to the same relative humidity. Sunlight Especially through south or west facing windows and glass doors will fade, dry out, warp, twist or crack solid or veneered furniture. Drop-leaf tables (pembroke and sofa) are particularly vulnerable, also tripod and tea tables. Glass Tops Have a tendency to attract moisture. Veneers beneath glass can lift. Make sure you use clear pressure pads to reduce these damages. Glass Tops are a good long term investment and will provide low maintenance costs with regards to wood surfaces etc. Abbey Antiques are happy to provide free trade quotation for same based upon toughened glass and polished edges for safety reasons.
