elcome to the January/February edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. Another year has just begun, and it’s a big one for me – I start a new decade. Instead of my age starting with X, it will start with X+1. Not that big of a deal, you’d think. Or is it? The other day I triggered the security alarm while walking out of a well-known shop. The helpful assistant rummaged in my bag for the offending item. “I can show you the receipt,” I politely said. “No, no,” she replied. “You look trustworthy.” She may as well have said “You’re inconceivably ancient, sir.” Not at all what I wanted to hear. “Come here, young fella,” I wished she’d said. “You look like a wrong ‘un.” I want the police to call me “sonny” and I want the off licence to refuse to serve me. But my features let me down, rounded and wrinkled and exuding a ripe old honesty. People now trust me, and you have no idea how upsetting that is. I wish that I was still regarded as a yob, mercilessly grilled when alarms went off. I wish that I was still X-1. Worried, I asked my wife “Do I look like X+1?” She replied “Y?”. (PS – sue me if that ain’t the best algebra joke ever.)

LOUISE FARRENC

or Men, Mendelssohn and Kylie Minogue STORY: DAVID YOUNG

T

his is another story of the quitegoods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade.

By nature, I’m just a very annoying person. No. I really am. Don’t try to butter me up. I’m annoying now and I was annoying even at primary school in ill-fitting shorts and a tie that I couldn’t do up properly. I was deliberately annoying, which makes it worse, constantly looking for new ways in which to annoy my six-year-old friends. One method that must have been particularly irritating to everyone was my affected way of pretending never to have heard of The Beatles, extolling instead the virtues of classical music, especially, for no particular reason, Felix Mendelssohn. Don’t ask me why I did this. I just know that it annoyed everybody greatly and consequently I was happy. I remember that, while the rest of the school sang Yellow Submarine, I had a small book that listed the twenty great

025_IM_CHP_PUB_JANFEB2... page 8

LOUISE FARRENC composers, which of course included Mendelssohn. Everybody was gratifyingly annoyed. The odd thing about that book (sadly out of print now) is that every composer ever in the history of the world seemed to have been white and male. Nobody ever said as much, but I naturally assumed that it must be quite impossible for women to compose music. This belief, of course, was disproved to me in my later years by the timeless canon of works by Kylie Minogue. Women really can write music, it seems. But had this, after all, been the case all along? As with literature, had there been women writers whose efforts had either been overlooked or conveniently forgotten? You will not be surprised to learn that the answer is ‘yes’. There is no parallel in music to George Eliot, no woman forced to assume a male identity, unless it turns out that Beethoven was a perky Australian woman. But there were female composers. One such, largely forgotten by time, was Louise Farrenc. Highly esteemed by the highbrow world of music, she nevertheless failed to establish a name for herself and so a concert of Farrenc work would not command the appeal of, say, a Mendelssohn performance (or, these days, Kylie Minogue). She also never wrote an opera, and that was what you were supposed to produce to be taken seriously in 19th century France. Louise Farrenc was born in Paris in 1804. At an early age, she showed great promise as a pianist, and her parents agreed to let her study at The Conservatoire when she was fifteen – although only men were allowed to study composition. She

went on to establish a successful career as a performer, at first with her husband playing flute, and later on as a solo artiste. Her success and fame earned her a post at The Conservatoire as Professor of Piano, one of the most prestigious musical posts in the world, although she was not entitled to earn as much as would a male counterpart. She composed music which gained acclaim, especially with her 1850 nonet. Using this piece as leverage, she eventually achieved parity on pay. Throughout her life, she was a composer, largely of chamber music, much of which was highly regarded, but very little of which caught on with the world at large. After her death, in 1875, her

January & February 2017

work was forgotten. Perhaps it was the lack of that precious opera in her portfolio. Or maybe, just maybe, it was her gender that was the problem. Recent research has revived her reputation. It remains to be seen whether someday someone somewhere will write a book for primary schools that admits that – whisper it quietly everyone – women are capable of writing classical music in a way that not even Kylie could imagine. She wasn’t the fiercest flame in the firmament of 19th century France, but she was a fire that burned for a while before some big male feet smothered the flickering. SALLE DU CONSERVATOIRE

FINAL SALARY PENSIONS

I’m a member of the Barclays 1964 Pension Scheme (Final Salary) and have been provided a transfer quote of over £800,000. This seems very high. Should I take up this option?

Many companies (particularly banks and insurance companies) are offering transfer values that are far higher than in previous years. Therefore, it is an excellent time to review your options. As your transfer value is more than £30,000 you will be required to seek independent financial advice if you choose to transfer. The decision to transfer away from a Final Salary Pension should not be taken lightly. There are many factors to consider. These include the size of the tax free lump sum, flexibility of pension withdrawals, loss of guaranteed pension and death benefits to name just a few.

I’m a member of a Final Salary Pension Scheme and I am concerned that my children will not be able to inherit the pension. Is this true? Would the position change if I was to transfer my Final Salary Pension into a Personal Pension?

It would be important to check your scheme’s rules. However, most final salary pension schemes offer a small provision for children until they are 18 years old (or 23 if they are in full-time education). If you were to transfer to a Personal Pension, you would be able to pass the pension fund to your children by way of nomination in the event of your death. However, there are many other factors in deciding if this is the best course of action. Therefore, we would strongly recommend that you seek independent financial advice.

You should not take any action until you have taken independent advice, as any decisions involving a transfer, once made, are usually irrevocable and will have a lasting impact on your future retirement provision. This could prove very costly if the wrong decision has been made. Please contact Jeff Bradley or Chris Haigh on 0208 524 8521 for a free initial consultation.

WORLD RENOWN PIANIST JOHN LILL LENDS HIS SUPPORT TO THE STRATFORD AND EAST LONDON MUSIC FESTIVAL

R

enowned pianist John Lill has endorsed the Stratford and East London Music Festival and has paid tribute to the ongoing services it provides for classical music and the arts.

“In an age, when we are experiencing the deliberate attempt to starve classical music and other fine arts out of existence, it is a near miracle that the Stratford and East London Music Festival is as dynamic and successful as it is after so many years of continuous activity. When I was a boy living in Leyton, many London suburbs had their own music clubs and amateur symphony orchestras, but now most of them have been obliterated by lack of funds. In my early days, I well remember the Festival and the fact that it’s still so enthusiastically and expertly organised deserves total admiration and my hearty congratulations. Very well done and long may you show such a wonderful example!” John Lill, November 2016. The Stratford and East London Music Festival continues to flourish and is now in its 135th year. The Festival website (www.stratfordmusicfestival.org.uk) now takes most entries online and provides all information on venues, classes, dates and results. The 135th Festival will take place on the 6th and 7th February at St. Mary’s Church in South Woodford for Choirs, Orchestras, Bands and Organ and from the 13th-18th February at Forest School in Snaresbrook for all other music, speech and drama classes. John Lill studied at the Royal College of Music and with Wilhelm Kempff and gave his first piano recital at the age of nine. Lill has made a number of recordings, including the complete piano concertos of Beethoven, Brahms and Rachmaninoff and the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven and Prokofiev. Lill has performed in over fifty countries, both as a recitalist and as a concerto soloist. His repertoire includes more than seventy concertos, and he is acclaimed in particular as a leading interpreter of

JOHN LILL Beethoven, whose complete sonata cycle he has performed on several occasions in the UK, US and Japan. In Britain, he has given over 30 BBC Promenade concerts and regularly appears with all the major Symphony Orchestras. He has toured overseas with the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, CBSO, Hallé, Royal Scottish National and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestras. John Lill lives in London. He was made an OBE in 1978 and awarded the CBE for his services to music in the 2005 New Year’s Honours List.
