elcome to the November/December edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. 2016 is drawing to a close, then, as I knew it would, and it seems likely that it will be followed by the aptly named 2017. Does one look back to the year just gone, or forward to the year yet to come, or, like Janus the Roman God, does one do both? Interestingly, Janus was very much the model for our modern world, combining a number of roles in a customerfocussed multi-purpose result-driven hyphen-obsessive way. For not only was he the God of looking both ways (a tricky post) but he was also the God of doorways, passages and gates, a job which must have kept him busy, especially in buildings with lots of doors, passages and gates. I’m not that flexible. The godless doors, passages and gates in my house have to fend for themselves (which they do by frequently banging, slamming and falling off their hinges) but I do try to look forwards and backwards a bit. I hope that 2016 was good for you, and that 2017 will be so too, and that your doors are all OK.

BRONZE RECLINING FIGURE

I
don’t mean to brag (here we go again – Ed.) but when I was young I displayed prodigious talent. Using only mud and an egg whisk I sculpted a wonderful piece in our back garden. It was either a rabbit or maybe an urn. Either way, my mother declared that I was the greatest living sculptor. Alas, when I turned three, I took up playing the plastic xylophone instead, with a particular talent for mainly hitting the yellow note. My Mum proudly said that I still was destined for greatness, but in the world of music. For some reason, this never quite came to fruition. I guess there isn’t much call for players of the yellow note on the plastic xylophone (or, for that matter, eggwhisk-mud-sculptures).
Had I pursued the sculpting road to immortality, as it turns out, I’d have been up against it. I realised this when I took a recent trip to Perry Green in Hertfordshire. There, dotted between trees and lakes, on lawns and in fields of sheep, are the works of Henry Moore, believed by many, but not by my Mum, to be one of our greatest sculptors. FAMILY GROUP

History does not relate whether he, too, began work on mud with an egg whisk. His mother maybe did not own an egg whisk, and, if she did, she may have preferred to keep it for the traditional purpose of whisking eggs. Moore was born in Castleford in 1898, the son of a miner. At the age of 11, the young Henry learned of Michelangelo (who lived before egg whisks were invented, but still did some quite good stuff). He went on to attend the local grammar school before serving in the army in the First World War, an experience that formed a strong anti-war philosophy in his adult life. After the war, at Leeds University, he met Barbara Hepworth (sculptor, egg whisk use not known) who was to remain his friend and rival in the world of sculpture. (I’m not sure if the sculpture world is all that cut-throat, so I assume that the rivalry was friendly.) Moore began to move away from the classical perfection of the nineteenth century and to embrace primitivism, leaving tool marks and imperfections in his work. In 1924 he travelled to Italy and then Paris, where he saw a reclining statue, a “Chacmool”, possibly a thousand years old. This was a form that would dominate his work. Back in London in 1928, he received his first commission – a sculpture for London Underground’s headquarters by Saint James’s Park. Moore married in 1929 and moved to Hampstead to join a growing community of avant-garde artists, including Hepworth. The area was awash with itinerant artists who traded ideas that would help Moore

to develop. It must have been a bit like my house, I suppose, except that most of the ideas that I swap with my Bohemian circle of friends relate to Tottenham’s back four and the weather. RECLINING FEMALE Moore moved on to more abstract work and the increasingly popular surrealism – a strand that is noticeable in my earlier egg whisk pieces, and, funnily enough, my xylophone works. Recruited during World War II as a war artist, Moore gained international fame. In 1940, his house was hit by shrapnel and he moved out to Hertfordshire, to the village of Perry Green

where he established a home and a workshop with his increasing wealth. The grounds are now run by the Henry Moore Foundation and are open to the public. Here, great bronze figures recline on lawns beneath copper beeches. Abstract figures on grassy knolls are patrolled by grazing sheep. Great monoliths stand stark against the sky. And to think, it could have been me. But it’s pointless dwelling on what might have been. I have to look on the bright side. My concerto for the yellow note on the xylophone has so far gone unnoticed. But one lives in hope, if not in Hampstead.

CHABAD OF BUCKHURST HILL
D
riving along Epping New Road in Buckhurst Hill you could not failed to have noticed the big white sign on an otherwise very nondescript building – proclaiming Chabad of Buckhurst Hill. But it just goes to show that appearances can be very deceptive – step inside and you will immediately feel the buzz of something very special, very spiritual and the heart of a growing Jewish community in Buckhurst Hill and beyond.
Chabad is an acronym made up of three Hebrew words: CHachma – wisdom; Binoh – understanding and Daat – knowledge, and is the very core of a worldwide movement of Orthodox Jewish communities, inspired through the philosophy of the Lubuvitch Rebbes – great masters of thought and spirituality, whose original movement was created during the enlightenment in Eastern Europe. Whilst never compromising on their Orthodox Judaism – Chabad is also renowned for their non-judgmental approach and for creating avenues for every person to become more engaged with Judaism. Chabad is the Star Trek of the Jewish

community – boldly going where none has gone before! Seeking out Jews and establishing “Chabad Houses” wherever there may be the chance of growing a community. And you can find Chabad Houses in Beijing, Cambodia, Alaska, and even Kathmandu – and now in our very own Buckhurst Hill! Buckhurst Hill, Loughton and Epping are relatively new centres of Jewish demographic change – moving outward from Gants Hill – which, at one time, boasted the largest concentration of Jews in Europe. So in 2005 a very young couple, Rabbi Odom and Henny Brandman set up home in Russell Road, and immediately held a Friday night (Sabbath) service at which 30 people turned up – anxious to see what was happening – and meet this special couple; but don’t be fooled – Rabbi Brandman grew up in Chigwell, so he knew the area – but he learned and trained for his Rabbinic qualification in the USA and Australia prior to settling in the area. Before long the community simply grew like topsy – and a new premises was found in Princes Road – but this also became outgrown until the current location was opened in 2013 – and even that wasn’t large enough for this growing community and the building has been extended to hold over 120 people together with catering facilities, a flat on top for visitors, a dedicated children’s and teen area – library

and so much more that the building seems more like the Tardis. But it’s not buildings that grow communities it’s people. Step inside nearly any time and you will feel the buzz of activity – from “Mummy and Me” tots and babies – through to Men’s and Women’s Lunch and Learn, whisky tasting evenings, Learning opportunities, Private lessons, Kids Cookery Clubs, Guest Speakers and weekly Synagogue services. The ever energetic Brandman couple are the engine room of this community, aided by a small team of volunteers. Together with their 7 children, they work night and day dedicating their lives and energy to the community. But Rabbi Brandman is crystal clear about his objectives “this is a home for every Jew, from whatever background – it’s a place where you can be welcomed and loved and where we never judge nor make demands”. No wonder that Chabad Buckhurst Hill is the fastest growing and inclusive Jewish community in the area – and no wonder that those who come in for a look often stay for years! Chabad Buckhurst Hill is a fully functioning Orthodox Synagogue (Shul) and services are held every Friday night and Saturday morning (Shabbat) as well as all of the festivals. Come to our Friday evening services – 6.30pm – GMT and 7.00 BST; or Shabbat morning where services commence at 10.00 am followed by a delicious Kiddush and hot Cholent! Only 36% of Savers take Retirement Advice!

recent survey undertaken by Franklin Templeton in 2016 has shown that of those with more than £250,000 saved for retirement only 36% used a professional adviser to create a retirement plan for their future. Annual preChristmas community event with Father Christmas, kids activities, tombola, raffle, lucky dip, craft stalls, plants, cakes, homemade produce and much more. Saturday November 26th, 4.00pm. Chingford Parish Church, The Green, Chingford E4 7EN. Music for the Eve of Advent. Concert of choral and organ music by candlelight, lasting just under an hour. The Chingford Singers, directed by Michael Emerson with John Rippin, organ. Admission free. Voluntary donations.
CRAFT FAIR
Buckhurst Hill community Association will be holding a Craft Fair at Bedford House, Westbury Road, IG9 5NW on Sunday 27th November, from 11.00 - 3.00pm. A wide range of craft and art works from local artists will be for sale, an ideal opportunity to find that special Xmas present! There will also be bring-and-buy and book stalls and tea and cakes, with all proceeds to BHCA (regd. charity 301268.)
