Here at Inside Magazine, we know that people in moral dilemmas often turn to these pages for advice and consolation, and it is our proud role to dispense great wisdom. So here is some. You might lose your money when you bet. Recently, I have to admit, I caught the bug. I didn’t bet actual money, largely due to the fact that I haven't got any. Instead, I bet theoretical sums. I dabbled in the stock market, invested in sterling, had a flutter on the Euros, bet on the referendum outcome and then, having lost the lot, tried to recoup it all by betting (disastrously, as it turned out) on the leadership of certain political parties. None of this quite went to plan. The theoretical stakes have gone and I'm theoretically broke. So there you have it. More priceless advice next time. You can bet on it.

BROWNSEA ISLAND

T
he perennial question. What exactly is an island? I do know that an island is not a man (except, bizarrely, the Isle of Man). I searched deep inside my inner psyche, looking for answers, and then it came to me. An island is land surrounded by sea. And, thinking on it, I realise now that I learned this in geography at primary school, where, thanks to the workaholic Mr Tillett, I also learned what an ox-bow lake is, and what is the currency of Peru, all in the course of 3 action-packed years.
But hard definitions often neglect the spirit
and soul that form their subject, for an island is so much more than that. It’s a sanctuary and an escape. The mainland is where one’s woes remain when we reach the island’s welcoming shore.

Brownsea Island, is, not surprisingly, an island, although it is not brown and is not technically in the sea either. It sits in the vast natural bowl of Poole Harbour, looking across at the millionaire houses on Sandbanks, and hemmed in by the two strands of beach that reach across the mouth of the harbour so that the wooded island looks like a bull that has grown too big for its pen. Small ferries take tourists across to the island, which is owned by the National Trust, but each boatload soon disperses along the shores and amidst the Scots Pines. The island has been inhabited since monks arrived in the 9th century. In 1850, it was owned by William Waugh. Somehow, he got it into his head that the white clay would make great porcelain. He built a village, Maryland, still visible in ruins on the western tip of the island. He employed 200 staff, built a three-storey pottery and developed a tramway. Unfortunately, this was before the days of Focus Groups and before television had made us all experts on entrepreneurial matters. The clay was no good. Bother. The business closed in 1887. Waugh had added richly to the culture of the island, though, with the Gatehouse and the church. Saint Mary’s is one of the first things that a visitor sees, perched above a green strewn with peacocks and hens and looking like a Hollywood attempt to depict the English villages of Thomas Hardy. The island is also famous as the place where the Scout movement was born, when, in 1907, Robert Baden-Powell staged an experimental camp, with 21 boys learning skills such as woodcraft and lifesaving over the course of a week in August. The international Scouting movement grew from this notion. A plaque near the entrance

celebrates this RED SQUIRREL history. Wise visitors will hasten past the plaque and the church to head into the forest of Scots Pines that cover most of the island. For it is here that the elusive red squirrels cavort and play while the island is still quiet in the morning. They have survived on the island because grey squirrels, that egregious American import, were never introduced. The irony! Had certain TV companies adopted this approach, we might all be chuckling still at repeats of Terry and June instead of (repeats of) Friends and Frasier. It doesn’t take long to walk round Brownsea Island. The southern shore paths skirt through pines then dip out to viewpoints over

Poole Harbour to the curved line of downs above Swanage and Corfe. At the tip of the island lie the ruins of Maryland Village, where sika deer stalk through the trees. The north coast cuts back through the pines to walk beside lakes and the vast lagoon that looks like it has bitten a huge chunk off the north-west corner, and it is from hides here that earnest twitchers gaze through binoculars at wading birds whose names I never remember, although I think that one was called Trevor. The last part of the walk is back to the castle and the gate and the ferry back to the mainland and one’s woes.

TEACHING THERAPIES HOLISTIC CENTRE
W
e are so often reminded about the need to watch our weight but it is surprising that just one portion too much each day can pile on more than a stone each year – and every year! If we can’t get it off during the summer, most people find the winter a more difficult time because we can hide our fat tummy under a big cardigan during the long, dark nights. Weight gain is exponential: the more weight we have, the less active our life, so the more weight we gain. This puts a strain on joints, increases our risk of fatty liver, heart disease and strokes, and is now said to increase our dementia risk also.
I recently attended a group hypnosis course at Teaching Therapies Holistic Centre (TTHC) in Sun Street, Waltham Abbey which has an amply group room of an ideal size for several people to lie down. The session began with a talk. On the drawing board was a large triangle. The very top part represented our conscious mind, and the far larger bottom area represented the unconscious mind, similar to an ice berg. It represents our conscious mind where we have all the things we tell ourselves about, such as how it is OK to eat lots of sugars and fats in pastries, sauces, confectionery, sweet drinks, fatty meats and other undesirable foods. In the hidden unconscious part, we have all the pain and distress which causes us to overeat, and our eating patterns
and triggers that we may have inherited or may have had for many years. It is easy to forget the importance of liquids in our day and we often want to eat something when all we really require is a drink. Carrying a small bottle of water is a wonderful means of quick and easy re-hydration when we feel our mental and physical energy sagging. Each member had different issues with food but most felt that food cravings reflected an addiction to comfort eating. Underlying this is usually confidence and self esteem issues, so dealing with these are a priority. We were introduced to a mnemoic SMART which stands for specific; measurable; agreed upon; realistic and time based. This is how we were to map our weight loss programme, working out these elements for ourselves. We were provided with a notebook to write down our thoughts and feelings and to keep a log of our food triggers and eating patterns and how and when we struggle or make progress. The two tutors are qualified hypnotherapists at Teaching Therapies Holistic Centre which offers all kinds of therapies, such as NLP and massage and also many healing practices, such as reflexology and Reiki. Over optimistic about your state pension - Not everyone will be entitled to receive the full state pension. Getting a pension forecast from gov.uk will show you what you are likely to receive. Not joining an employer scheme - If you can you should join a workplace pension scheme. By 2018 all UK companies will have to offer one and will contribute to it on your behalf, provided you don’t opt out of making your own contributions. Not reviewing your plans regularly - Regular reviews are important to ensure you’re saving as much as you can comfortably afford and that your

pension pot is invested in a diversified portfolio. The earlier you save, the more opportunity there is for your pension to grow, and there’s also the added incentive of tax relief. Making your property your pension fund - This is a risky strategy, it could mean downsizing to release cash and it might be difficult to sell in a downturn. There is also the expense of finding new accommodation. Not shopping around for an annuity - If you decide to take an annuity shopping around may produce a better deal than your current pension provider. It could mean you’re hundreds of pounds better off, especially if you have any health conditions.
