Welcome to the January/February edition of Inside Magazine (previously the West Essex Directory), the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. It’s that time of the year again, when frankly I’m just too busy to give you the attention you deserve, and you’ll have to put up with my specially designed DIY round-robin. Just pick the answer that is most suitable. Dear reader/cousin/bank manager. I hope this letter finds you well/recovering/in Belgium. It’s been a long/ bright/embarrassing year/afternoon/therapy session. It was great to see you/daylight/the ballet, and I hope it won’t be too long before we do it again/sue one another/get married. The twins/dog/house is/are fine/rabid/subsiding, but my wife/lawnmower/car is due an MOT/ well/full of clippings.

GRANDMOTHER WARNS ABOUT “DEVILISH” MAIL-ORDER SCAMS

An 81-year-old grandmother-of-five who spent over £3,000 on “devilish” mail-order scams is warning other people not to become a victim of fraudsters.

The victim, who does not want to be named, realised after five months that she was being scammed and contacted Essex Trading Standards, who are now investigating the case. “I just feel so ridiculous and so stupid and I’ve lost a lot of money I couldn’t afford. I think: ‘How and why did I do it? How did I get caught in it?’ It’s like a spider’s web. It’s like a one-way track. It’s devilish,” she said. “I would like to warn other people not to fall into the same trap that I did.” Cllr Roger Walters, Essex County Council Trading Standards Lead, said: “These mail scams typically sell over-priced goods such as confectionery and skin products. They send numerous letters, often telling you you’ve won a big prize in a draw which you can claim by buying something else. They claim to offer free gifts, but often use your bank details to get payments before dispatching any items. “Our advice is never to enter these prize draws or pay to receive “free” gifts. If you think you are a victim of a scam, then contact Trading Standards. We will be able to help you.”

The scam started when she ordered some biscuits from one catalogue. She was then bombarded with post from three other companies, inviting her to enter prize draws for up to £148,000, enticing her with so-called free gifts which she ended up paying for. She was made to pay for orders before they were dispatched. She realised something was wrong when money was taken from her account for a watch and other goods that she had not ordered. She was receiving several letters a day at her home. She received numerous parcels containing items she had paid for but not ordered including face creams, soaps, vitamins and accessories. Essex Trading Standards and the victim’s bank are working to help her recover some of the money she spent and have advised her not to respond to any more letters or calls from the scam companies. Essex Trading Standards officers are still working their way through a list of about 3,000 names they were given last summer of people on a so-called “suckers list” held by scammers, visiting the most vulnerable.

love a ruined castle. And I also love steam engines. But the best thing of all is a steam engine that takes you to a ruined castle. By sheer chance, this is what you can do from Swanage. Fancy that.

The Swanage Railway runs through 6 miles of Dorset countryside, chugging past fields and cottages, steaming through copses, over bridges, under bridges, beside streams and roads, twisting and turning and blowing its whistle to its terminus at Norden. British Rail closed the original line in 1972. They sold off much of the land and had plans to demolish some of the bridges. The track that curves around the village of Corfe Castle was to be turned into a road. The station at Swanage PURBECK RIDGE

was earmarked for a shopping centre. But, in 1975, the local council gave the group called the Swanage Railway Society the lease to the old station, and the hard work began. In 1979, the first train ran a few hundred yards on the re-laid track. Then, like a benign worm crawling slowly across the fields and copses, the railway stretched back inland, finally reaching Norden in the 1990s. I love steam engines – the sight of them, the sound of them, even the very smell of them. If you catch a train from Swanage to Corfe Castle, you can explore the restored station, admire the locomotive that will pull you away, with the reassurance that this is absolutely not anorak behaviour. You’re taking an aesthetic interest in industrial archaeology. Not anoraks at all. Honest. (We were lucky enough to get the BR 2-6-4T Class 4MT. Bet you’re feeling jealous now, aren’t you? And there’s nothing anorakky about that either – everybody loves the BR 2-6-4T.) You settle in your carriage, which rattles along to that soothing chug-chug as plumes of smoke drift back from the engine like wreaths across the scenery. To the south, the high ridge of Purbeck hills that runs parallel offers a tempting way back to Swanage for the energetic.

Corfe Castle itself is run by STEAM ENGINE AT SWANAGE the National Trust, a collection of broken towers that jut like jagged teeth above the rooves of the cottages in the village. There has been some sort of castle on this spot, guarding the marble quarries of Purbeck, since Roman times. William the Conqueror rebuilt the fort in stone in the latter half of the 11th Century. Explore the ruins by rough paths that climb up amongst the fallen towers to get to a view over the village and back down the valley to Swanage. This is also officially not at all anorak behaviour. DEAN SHULTON Chiropodist What is a fungal nail infection? fungal nail infection or Onychomycosis is where fungus (closely related to athletes foot) affects the hard material (keratin) that makes up the nails. It can affect any part of said nail, slowly developing over time, and causing the nail to become discoloured, thickened and distorted. The nail colour can turn white, black, yellow or green. It is not usually painful at first, but the nail can look unsightly. However, if it is left to continue, it may cause pain and discomfort. Fungal nail infections can be treated and usually fully cured, however some treatments can take several months to work, and it can be a bit if a bind, but well worth it in the long run. As comfortable feet, help with comfortable mobilisation. Treatments can be prescribed or bought over the counter, a pharmacist will advise you if you choose this route. Always read the leaflet, before using the product in case you have any unwanted side effects. Dusting your shoes with athletes foot powder occasionally, may also help to prevent re infection.

NB Names and some details have been changed to protect the identity of victims Domestic abuse only happens to women, right? Wrong. In fact, statistics show about one in five reports of abuse in Essex are made by men, while one in six men will be a victim during their lifetime. Ralph, who suffered domestic abuse at the hand of an ex-girlfriend, said: “In 2006 I met the person who abused me and for the next five years my life would never be the same. I was beaten, attacked with knives, psychologically abused and made to feel worthless. “In 2007 I moved from London to Essex and was isolated from everyone that I ever knew. My life changed again in 2010 when I hit my lowest point and I decided that I would either need to get away from my perpetrator or otherwise I would end my life. "It was at that point that someone told me to get in touch with Safer Places and they supported me through the most difficult time of my life. I have recovered from the aftermath of the abuse, got a new job and now help others in my situation as a volunteer. “When you are abused and at your lowest place, especially as a man. You think no one will help you or understand, but I am living proof that that’s not the case.” As well as experiencing domestic abuse from female partners, many men are also abused by other men. These can include brothers, fathers and sons, as well as male partners.

Essex County Council, Essex Police, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex and partners have launched a new campaign geared at raising awareness of domestic abuse and the support available to victims. Victims often tell officers that they decide against seeking help because of key events such as Christmas and birthdays.
