DEAR READERS, Wat vliegt de tijd. Niet alleen omdat dit alweer de tweeëntwintigste editie van het GASSAN Magazine is, maar ook omdat ons prachtige familiebedrijf, opgericht door mijn overgrootvader Samuel Gassan, dit jaar zijn 80-jarig jubileum viert. Een mijlpaal om met ongelooflijk veel trots én dankbaarheid bij stil te staan! Vanaf jonge leeftijd liep ik al rond in het bedrijf en inmiddels werk ik al jaren zij aan zij met mijn dierbare familie, de meest toegewijde collega’s en onze trouwe partners. Hoewel de tijd snel verstrijkt, besef ik dagelijks hoe bijzonder dit is en dat koester ik.

Deze speciale editie van het magazine staat geheel in het teken van 80 Years of Brilliance. Acht decennia vakmanschap, vernieuwing en verbondenheid komen tot leven. Voor deze gelegenheid had ik de eer mijn bijzondere oma te interviewen over familie, herinneringen en nalatenschap. Zij is nu de enige en laatste Gassan.

Verder nemen wij jullie langs een tijdlijn vol historische momenten die GASSAN hebben gevormd tot wat het vandaag is. Een mooie trip down memory lane. Mijn vader, broer en ik delen ook onze persoonlijke hoogtepunten, en er is een exclusief kijkje achter de schermen in onze ateliers, waar dagelijks met passie en precisie aan juwelen en horloges wordt gewerkt.

Daarnaast bevat dit nummer een openhartig gesprek tussen mijn vader, Benno Leeser, en zijn goede vriend en zakenpartner Yves Gijrath. Twee sterke persoonlijkheden die elkaar al jarenlang kennen, uitdagen en inspireren en dat is in hun woorden duidelijk voelbaar. Ook zijn wij trots om terug te keren met de tweede editie van 10 Women to Watch: tien inspirerende vrouwelijke ondernemers die bouwen, vernieuwen en motiveren. Een waardevol initiatief van Choices by DL en ABN AMRO MeesPierson, dat kansen voor vrouwelijke ondernemers zichtbaar vergroot.

Met deze jubileumeditie vieren we niet alleen het verleden, maar kijken we ook vol vertrouwen naar de toekomst. Een toekomst waarin we blijven bouwen op de waarden die ons 80 jaar geleden al groot maakten: kwaliteit, vakmanschap en familie. Een prachtig fundament voor de volgende generaties. How swiftly time passes. Not only because this is already the twenty-second edition of GASSAN Magazine, but also because our cherished family business, founded by my great-grandfather, Samuel Gassan, proudly marks its 80th anniversary this year. A milestone worthy of deep reflection, immense pride, and heartfelt gratitude. From an early age, I found myself wandering through the halls of this company. Today, I have the privilege of working with my beloved family, our most dedicated colleagues, and our loyal partners. And although the years seem to pass ever more quickly, I am reminded each day of just how special this is, and I truly treasure it.

This special edition of the magazine is dedicated entirely to 80 Years of Brilliance. Eight decades of craftsmanship, innovation, and connection are brought to life within these pages. For this occasion, I had the honour of interviewing my extraordinary grandmother about family, treasured memories, and the legacy she carries. She is now the last remaining Gassan.

We also invite you to journey through a beautifully curated timeline of defining moments that have shaped GASSAN into the company it is today; a true trip down memory lane. My father, brother, and I share some of our personal highlights, and we open the doors to our ateliers for an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse at where jewels and watches are meticulously crafted and refined with passion and precision.

This issue also features a candid and engaging conversation between my father, Benno Leeser, and his dear friend and business partner, Yves Gijrath; two remarkable personalities whose long-standing relationship has been built on mutual respect, challenge, and inspiration. We are also proud to once again present 10 Women to Watch: ten outstanding female entrepreneurs who build, innovate, and inspire.

This valuable initiative by Choices by DL and ABN AMRO MeesPierson continues to shine a light on female entrepreneurship, helping to expand opportunities and visibility for women in business.

With this anniversary edition, we honour not only our past but also look ahead with confidence and excitement to the future. A future firmly rooted in the values that have defined us for eightdecades: quality, craftsmanship, and family.

Firma GASSAN

Tijdens de oorlog verblijft Samuel Gassan in Zwitserland, waar hij in dienst treedt van het Britse leger als kapitein bij de repatriëringsdienst. In deze rol helpt hij kinderen van diamantairs, die van hun ouders zijn gescheiden, uit de kinderbarak van het concentratiekamp Bergen-Belsen en brengt hij hen terug naar Nederland.

Na de oorlog keert Samuel terug naar Amsterdam, waar hij een verwoeste stad aantreft. Veel familieleden en vrienden zijn omgekomen, bedrijven en straten liggen in puin.

Toch weet hij zich snel te herpakken. In oktober 1945, Start hij op 35-jarige leeftijd, zijn eigen diamanthandel: Firma GASSAN, gevestigd in de Diamantbeurs aan het Weesperplein. Met een portefeuille vol diamanten reist hij door Europa op zoek naar klanten. Vijf jaar later opent hij een diamantslijperij in de Zwanenburgerstraat.

Firma GASSAN During the war, Samuel GASSAN remains in Switzerland and serves in the British Army as a captain in the repatriation service. He plays a vital role in reuniting children of diamond dealers, separated from their parents, by ensuring their return from the children’s barracks in the Bergen-Belsen camp to the Netherlands.

After the war, Samuel returns to Amsterdam, a city that has undergone profound changes.

Many of his family members and friends are gone, and both businesses and streets lie in ruins. Nonetheless, he quickly resumes his work.

In October 1945, at the age of 35, he establishes his diamond business, Firma GASSAN, in the Diamond Exchange on Weesperplein. With a portfolio of diamonds in hand, he travels across Europe in search of buyers. Five years later, he opens a diamond-cutting factory on Zwanenburgerstraat.

Samuel Gassan komt op het idee om open te gaan voor het publiek en rondleidingen te geven aan toeristen.

In 1955 verhuist Samuel zijn bedrijf naar de voormalige diamantslijperij van Jacob Soep aan de Nieuwe Achtergracht. Datzelfde jaar introduceert hij rondleidingen voor geïnteresseerden en toeristen. 1955 is ook op persoonlijk vlak een bijzonder jaar voor Samuel: hij wordt opa.

The birth of grandson Benno On June 22nd 1955, Anita and Rolf Leeser welcome their son Benno, who is now the CEO of GASSAN Diamonds. Four years later, their second son, Guy, is born.

Samuel Gassan comes up with the idea of opening up to the public and giving guided tours to tourists In 1955, Samuel moves his business to the former diamond-cutting factory of Jacob Soep on Nieuwe Achtergracht. Around this time, he begins offering guided tours for interested visitors and tourists, an innovative move that opens the diamond trade to the public. On a personal note, 1955 is also a joyful year for Samuel, as he becomes a grandfather.

Winkelen op Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

In 1967 start GASSAN met de verkoop van losse, diamanten op Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Later wordt er een goudsmid in dienst genomen, waardoor juwelen ter plaatse kunnen worden gemaakt. Na de overname van de bestaande juwelier op Schiphol in 1989 beschikt GASSAN over drie diamantbalies en drie juwelierswinkels op de luchthaven.

Werknemers rennen regelmatig tussen de verschillende vestigingen heen en weer, omdat de goudsmid slechts op één locatie werkt.

Wanneer een passagier weinig tijd heeft, wordt het juweel zelfs tot in het vliegtuig gebracht.

Samuel Gassan introduces tax-free shopping at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol GASSAN begins operations at Schiphol with the sale of loose, unset diamonds. Later, a goldsmith joins the team, is hired, enabling jewellery to be crafted on-site. By 1989, the company has three diamond counters and three jewellery boutiques, following the acquisition of a former jeweller at the airport. Employees frequently move between locations, as the goldsmith works in only one of them. When passengers are short on time, jewellery is even delivered directly to the aircraft.

GASSAN Diamonds verhuist naar de oude, stoomaangedreven diamantslijperij van de gebroeders Boas aan de Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat

Onder leiding van de broers groeit het bedrijf verder. In 1990 nemen zij de voormalige stoomdiamantslijperij van de gebroeders Boas aan de Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat over. Dit was de plek waar oprichter Samuel Gassan ooit het vak leerde. Na een ingrijpende verbouwing, waarbij onder andere tonnen opgeslagen textiel worden verwijderd, verhuist GASSAN Diamonds naar dit historische pand, waarmee het monument behouden blijft voor de stad.

GASSAN Dam Square

Benno en Guy Leeser nemen het Amsterdam Diamond Center over, één van de grootste multibrandwinkels van Nederland op het gebied van horloges, juwelen en diamanten. Vanwege de prominente ligging aan de Dam, in het hart van Amsterdam, wordt de naam veranderd naar GASSAN Dam Square. In 2018 werd de winkel volledig gerenoveerd.

GASSAN Dam Square Benno and Guy Leeser acquire the Amsterdam Diamond Center, one of the largest multi-brand stores in the Netherlands for watches, jewellery, and diamonds. Due to its central location on Dam Square, the store is rebranded as GASSAN Dam Square. In 2018, the store was completely renovated.

GASSAN opent haar eerste taxfree horlogewinkel op Changi Airport in Singapore. Onder leiding van David Bijlsma breidt GASSAN Singapore zich in de jaren daarna uit met diverse mono- en multibrand boutiques op de luchthaven.

GASSAN en Rodrigo Otazu

Tussen 2003 en 2008 werkte GASSAN samen met Rodrigo Otazu aan exclusieve juwelencollecties vol glamour en lef.

Rodrigo Otazu werd bekend door zijn sieraden, gedragen door wereldsterren als Britney Spears en Lady Gaga.

De collectie van GASSAN bestond uit gelimiteerde, unieke stukken, ontworpen door Kitty Leeser in samenwerking met Rodrigo Otazu.

Deze samenwerking bracht internationale allure naar het Nederlandse vakmanschap.

Rodrigo Otazu became famous for his jewellery, worn by global stars such as Britney Spears and Lady Gaga.

Het ambacht diamant bewerken is toegevoegd aan de Nationale Inventaris Immaterieel Cultureel Erfgoed. Het is een voor de Nederlandse geschiedenis belangrijk ambacht, nauw verbonden met de Joodse geschiedenis in Amsterdam.

Craft diamond cutter The craft of diamond cutting has been added to the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is a craft of great importance to Dutch history, closely connected to the Jewish history of Amsterdam.

Samenwerking met het Van Gogh Museum

In samenwerking met het Van Gogh Museum heeft GASSAN 4 limited collecties ontwikkeld om de Nederlandse kunstenaar te eren. In 2015 is het 125 geleden dat Vincent van Gogh overleed. Collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum In collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum, GASSAN has developed four limited collections to honor the Dutch artist. In 2015, it was 125 years since Vincent van Gogh passed away. The inspiration for the four collections comes from the works “Sunflowers”, “Almond Blossom”, “Irises”, and “Self-Portrait”. 50-jarig jubileum op Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Op 14 september 2017 viert GASSAN het 50-jarig jubileum op Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Sinds de start in 1967 met slechts vijf medewerkers is GASSAN Schiphol uitgegroeid tot 17 locaties met meer dan 200 medewerkers. In diezelfde periode is het aantal passagiers toegenomen van 3,3 miljoen naar 63,3 miljoen.

50th Anniversary at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol On September 14th 2017, GASSAN celebrates 50 years of operations at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Since 1967, with just five employees, GASSAN Schiphol has grown to 17 locations and over 200 employees. Passenger traffic increased from 3.3 million to 63.3 million during the same period.

Op 9 september was de officiële viering van het 10-jarig jubileum van Choices by DL. Op een fantastische locatie, de onderwaterwereld van het Artis Aquarium is de mijlpaal groots en feestelijk gevierd. The milestone was celebrated in a spectacular setting – the underwater world of the Artis Aquarium. In the presence of business partners, press, celebrities, and friends of the brand, the highlights of ten years of Choices by DL were commemorated, and a spectacular new collection was unveiled: the Nature and Animal Line.

The designs in the Nature and Animal Collection are inspired by nature and are bold and strikingly colourful. The brand’s DNA remains clearly visible, with the distinctive Choices by DL signature strongly present in this line. As always, the stones in the collection can be interchanged to suit personal taste or occasion.

Van Nieuwe Achtergracht naar Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat

In oktober 1945, kort na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, start Samuel Gassan, grootvader van Benno Leeser, een bedrijf dat later bekend zou worden als GASSAN Diamonds. Tien jaar later verhuist de onderneming naar de Nieuwe Achtergracht, recht tegenover de iconische Amsterdamse diamantbeurs. Na het overlijden van Samuel in 1983 nemen kleinzoons Benno en Guy Leeser het over. Onder hun leiding groeit het bedrijf gestaag.

In 1990 volgt een bijzondere stap: de verhuizing naar de voormalige stoomdiamantslijperij van de gebroeders Boas aan de Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat.

“Hiermee was de cirkel rond,” vertelt Benno.

“Mijn grootvader werkte hier vóór de oorlog als diamantsnijder. “Wij hebben destijds lang gezocht naar een geschikt groter pand. Wij waren bijna rond met het pand naast het Okura, maar het hotel wilde niet zoveel bussen naast hun deur. Dit pand heeft alles en is uniek, met een groot parkeerterrein voor de deur in Amsterdam en een aanlegsteiger voor de rondvaartboten aan de achterkant. Het is de oudste diamantslijperij van Amsterdam.”

In October 1945, shortly after the Second World War, Samuel Gassan, grandfather of Benno Leeser, founded what would later become GASSAN Diamonds. A decade later, the company moved to Nieuwe Achtergracht, directly opposite the iconic Amsterdam Diamond Exchange. When Samuel passed away in 1983, his grandsons Benno and Guy Leeser took over the company, steadily growing the family business. In 1990, they made a remarkable move to the former steam-powered diamond-cutting factory of the Boas brothers on Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat. “It brought things full circle,” Benno recalls. “Before the war, my grandfather worked here as a diamond cutter.

We searched for larger premises for a long time, and we almost secured the building next to the Okura Hotel, but they were not keen on having too many coaches outside. This site has everything: a large car park in the heart of Amsterdam and a mooring for canal boats at the rear. It’s the oldest diamond-cutting factory in the city.”

MASTERS EXPO

MASTERS EXPO is de opvolger van de Succesvolle beurzen: Masters of LXRY en de Miljonair Fair.

GASSAN is vanaf dag één nauw betrokken bij deze exclusieve beurs. Wat begon in de passagiersterminal als een kleinschaliger evenement, waar zelfs nog werd geprotesteerd tegen bontjassen, is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een groots, meerdaags event in de RAI. Jaarlijks trekt het circa 40.000 bezoekers en geldt het als hét platform voor luxe, vakmanschap en innovatie. “GASSAN is inmiddels de grootste standhouder en daar zijn we trots op. Het is voor ons een zeer belangrijk event waar we ons merk en vakmanschap kunnen laten zien.”

MASTERS EXPO

MASTERS EXPO is the successor to the highly successful Masters of LXRY and Miljonair Fair.

GASSAN has been closely involved from day one.

What began in the Passenger Terminal as a smallerscale event, even attracting protests against fur coats, has evolved into a major, multi-day event at the RAI. Today, it draws around 40,000 visitors annually and is regarded as the leading platform for luxury, craftsmanship, and innovation. “GASSAN is now the largest exhibitor, and we are very proud of that. It’s an important stage for us to present our brand and our craft.”

Feyenoord TROPHY BY GASSAN Championshipringen

In 2023 vierde Feyenoord zijn zestiende landstitel. Als bekroning op het kampioenschap ontvingen de spelers een exclusieve TROPHY BY GASSAN Championshipring. Elke ring droeg het Feyenoord-logo en de iconische Erasmusbrug, maar was daarnaast volledig gepersonaliseerd met het rugnummer en de initialen van de speler. “Voor mij, als diehard Feyenoord-fan, was dit natuurlijk de mooiste opdracht voor TROPHY BY GASSAN en de uitreiking was onvergetelijk.”

In 2023, Feyenoord celebrated its sixteenth national championship. To mark the occasion, each player received an exclusive TROPHY BY GASSAN Championship Ring. The rings featured the Feyenoord crest and the iconic Erasmus Bridge, and were individually personalised with player numbers and initials. “For me, as a die-hard Feyenoord supporter, this was without doubt the most special project for TROPHY BY GASSAN and presenting the rings to the players was an unforgettable moment.”

Van Amsterdam Diamond Centre naar GASSAN Dam Square

Het Amsterdam Diamond Centre maakte ooit, samen met onder andere GASSAN, deel uit van de Diamond Foundation Amsterdam (DFA), een collectief dat in 1982 werd opgericht om het Amsterdamse diamantambacht te promoten. “We kochten het Amsterdam Diamond Centre van Paul Asscher. Het was het meest ingewikkelde contract dat ik ooit heb getekend, maar eerlijk gezegd hebben we er daarna nooit meer in gekeken, een goed teken dus. Bij de overname hoorden ook bepaalde inkoopverplichtingen, waardoor we nog enkele jaren gezamenlijk hebben ingekocht. We zijn nog altijd zeer tevreden met deze stap. Het is een toplocatie, midden in de stad, en werkelijk de beste plek die je kunt hebben.”

From Amsterdam Diamond Centre to GASSAN Dam Square

The Amsterdam Diamond Centre once belonged to the Diamond Foundation Amsterdam (DFA), a collective founded in 1982 to promote the city’s diamond craftsmanship, of which GASSAN was also a member. “We bought the Amsterdam Diamond Centre from Paul Asscher. It was the most complicated contract I’ve ever signed, but we never had to look at it again, which I take as a good sign. The acquisition included certain purchasing obligations, meaning we bought together for several years. We’re still very happy with this decision. It’s a prime location, right in the heart of the city, truly the best spot you could have.”

Teamprestatie in COVID-tijd

Net als veel andere bedrijven werd GASSAN hard geraakt door de COVID-19-pandemie. Toch koos het familiebedrijf voor een proactieve aanpak. “Je kunt in een hoekje gaan zitten huilen, of samen de schouders eronder zetten.” Terwijl de deuren gesloten bleven, werd de tijd benut voor grote verbouwingen; een stuk efficiënter dan tijdens drukke periodes. Zo ontstond de omslag van diamantfabriek naar HOUSE of GASSAN, met een duidelijke focus op het hogere segment in de Nederlandse markt. Toen de winkels vlak voor Kerst moesten sluiten, werd in recordtijd een logistieke afdeling opgezet. Verkoopmedewerkers stapten massaal in de auto om aankopen persoonlijk bij klanten door het hele land af te leveren. “Daar ben ik enorm trots op. Het laat zien hoe flexibel onze organisatie is en hoe loyaal onze mensen zijn.”

Team effort during the COVID period

Like many businesses, GASSAN was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. But the family firm chose a proactive path. “You can sit in a corner and cry, or you can roll up your sleeves together.” With the doors closed, they seized the moment for major renovations, far easier to complete without the bustle of daily visitors. This period marked the transformation from a diamond factory to the HOUSE of GASSAN, with a clear focus on the high-end market and the Dutch clientele. When shops were forced to close just before Christmas, a logistics department was set up in record time. Sales staff eagerly volunteered to personally deliver purchases to customers all over the country. “I’m extremely proud of that. It shows the flexibility of our organisation and the loyalty of our people.”

Gezamenlijke reizen naar het Verre Oosten

Benno en Kitty hebben voor GASSAN altijd veel gereisd en zijn daardoor perfect op elkaar ingespeeld. “Kitty is meer van de social talk, terwijl ik liever de focus leg op business.

Reizen is intensief, en juist daarom is het fijn om dit samen te doen.” Tijdens hun tochten naar het Verre Oosten lag het tempo hoog: in vier weken tijd bezochten ze vier tot vijf landen, met dagelijks ontbijt-, lunch- én dinerafspraken en tussendoor nog extra meetings.

Travelling together to the Far East

Benno and Kitty have travelled extensively for GASSAN, developing a natural rhythm as a team.

“Kitty is more about social talk, while I prefer to focus on business. Travel is intense, and it’s wonderful to share that with someone you work so well with.” On their trips to the Far East, the pace was relentless: in just four weeks, they visited four to five countries, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner meetings each day, plus additional appointments in between.

In 1987 begon David zijn carrière bij GASSAN Schiphol als magazijnmedewerker. Al snel maakte hij de overstap naar de verkoopafdeling.

“Toen de winkels op Schiphol openden, wilde ik niets liever dan daar in de vakanties werken.

Mijn moeder hoopte dat ik zou gaan studeren, maar op school zei mijn mentor: ‘Van een klas vol 17-jarigen is er één die precies weet wat hij wil worden’, en dat was ik,”, vertelt David. Zijn fascinatie voor horloges was toen al duidelijk.

Sinds 1991 is hij dan ook verantwoordelijk voor de horloge-inkoop voor alle GASSANentiteiten.

David’s journey with GASSAN began in 1987 at Schiphol Airport, where he started as a warehouse assistant before quickly moving into sales. “When the shops at Schiphol opened, I wanted nothing more than to work there during the holidays. My mother hoped I would study, but my school mentor said, ‘Out of a class of 17-year-olds, there is one who knows exactly what he wants to be,’ and that was me,” David recalls. His passion for watches was evident from the start, and since 1991, he has overseen watch purchasing for all GASSAN entities.

Horizon verbreden door internationale stages

Om zich verder te ontwikkelen in het vak, liep David stages bij diverse gerenommeerde bedrijven.

Zijn eerste stage was bij horlogemaker Eterna in Grenchen, Zwitserland, waar hij werkte op zowel de inkoop- en boekhoudafdeling als in de verkoop. Daarna volgde een stage als goudsmid bij juwelenfabrikant Jourdan in Valence, Frankrijk.

Bij Alain Roure in Lyon breidde hij zijn ervaring verder uit: hij werkte als goudsmid, kocht kleurstenen in, sleep deze zelf en was actief op de diamantafdeling. Ook buiten Europa deed David waardevolle ervaring op. In Durham, North Carolina liep hij een verkoopstage bij juweliershuis Carlisle & Co. Tot slot was hij actief bij het Duitse Kienhöfer & Moog. “Alle stages die ik heb gelopen waren fantastisch! Ik heb geleerd hoe je dingen moet aanpakken, maar vooral ook wat je beter níét kunt doen. Iedereen die mij van vroeger kent zeggen altijd dat ik als jongetje wegging en als man terugkwam”. In Lausanne volgde David een vakopleiding aan het Centre de Formation de l’Horlogerie. Tijdens deze opleiding maakte hij met de hand een armband, die hij later cadeau gaf aan Gytha, een symbolisch begin van zowel zijn carrière als hun relatie.

Lancering GuyDavid horloges

In 2007 kreeg GASSAN de mogelijkheid om automatische uurwerken te ontwikkelen voor private label-horloges. Dit leidde tot de oprichting van GuyDavid, een horlogemerk van David en zijn zoon Guy. De naam is een samenvoeging van hun voornamen, waarbij Guy’s volledige naam, Guy David Bijlsma, het uitgangspunt vormde. “Wat dit project zo bijzonder maakt, is dat Guy een uitzonderlijk oog voor detail heeft. Hij weet precies waar een ontwerp sterker of verfijnder kan.” De gezamenlijke liefde voor horloges kwam in dit merk mooi samen, waarbij vakmanschap en familieband elkaar versterken.

Broadening horizons through international internships

Determined to refine his craft, David undertook internships at several prestigious companies. He began at Eterna in Grenchen, Switzerland, gaining experience in purchasing, accounting, and sales. This was followed by goldsmith training at Jourdan in Valence, France, and further development at Alain Roure in Lyon, where he worked as a goldsmith, sourced and cut coloured gemstones, and contributed to the diamond department. His career then took him to the United States for a sales internship at Carlisle & Co in Durham, North Carolina, and later to German jeweller Kienhöfer & Moog. “Every internship was fantastic. I learned how to approach things, and more importantly, what to avoid. People who knew me then say I left as a boy and returned as a man.” In Lausanne, he trained at the Centre de Formation de l’Horlogerie, handcrafting a bracelet he later gave to Gytha, a symbolic start to both his career and their relationship.

The launch of GuyDavid watches

In 2007, GASSAN ventured into producing automatic watches for private-label watches, inspiring the creation of GuyDavid, a brand cofounded by David and his son Guy, its name drawn from Guy’s full name, Guy David Bijlsma. “Guy has an exceptional eye for detail; he knows exactly how to strengthen or refine a design.” The shared passion for watches was perfectly embodied in this brand, blending craftsmanship with family ties.

In 1999 kreeg GASSAN de kans om een winkel te openen op de luchthaven van Singapore, een belangrijke mijlpaal in de internationale expansie van het bedrijf. Voor Benno en Kitty was dit het perfecte moment om David een nieuwe uitdaging te geven.

Samen met één collega vertrok hij naar Singapore om het avontuur aan te gaan. “Er was nog niets: geen kantoor, geen inrichting, zelfs de basisbenodigdheden moesten we bij de kantoorhandel kopen”. Het appartement waarin ze verbleven deed tegelijkertijd dienst als kantoor. In september 1999 opende we de eerste winkel op Singapore Changi Airport.

Benno and Kitty saw it as the perfect challenge for David. With just one colleague, he set off for Singapore to begin the venture. “There was nothing; no office, no furnishings; even the basic supplies had to be bought from a stationery shop.” Their apartment doubled as an office.

In September 1999, they opened the first store at Changi Airport. “I’m still incredibly proud that, 26 years later, we’re still there, now with six shops.”

Opening Rolex Boutique bij HOUSE of GASSAN & opening Omega Boutique

Een hoogtepunt in David’s carrière was de opening van de eerste Rolex Boutique van Nederland in HOUSE of GASSAN in 2014, feestelijk ingeluid door Richard Krajicek, Daphne Deckers en David zelf. Na een grondige renovatie vorig jaar benadrukte David trots: “We vertegenwoordigen Rolex al jaren in Amsterdam en zijn er trots op dat we de aanwezigheid van het merk in Nederland kunnen versterken met behoud van de hoogste kwaliteits- en servicenormen die integraal deel uitmaken van zowel het merk als onze eigen business.” Recent volgde een nieuwe mijlpaal: de opening van de OMEGA Boutique in de P.C. Hooftstraat. Deze versterkt het aanbod van luxe horloge- en juwelenmerken in deze exclusieve winkelstraat. OMEGA-CEO Raynald Aeschlimann sprak zijn vertrouwen uit: “Een externe boutique openen is als het overhandigen van je huissleutels.

Bij GASSAN weet ik dat ze in uitstekende, professionele handen zijn.”

Rolex and OMEGA milestones

A defining moment in David’s career came in 2014 with the opening of the first Rolex Boutique in the Netherlands at HOUSE of GASSAN, inaugurated

by Richard Krajicek, Daphne Deckers, and David himself. Following an extensive renovation last year, he remarked: “We have represented Rolex in Amsterdam for many years and are proud to strengthen its presence in the Netherlands while upholding the highest standards of quality and service.”

Another recent highlight was the opening of the OMEGA Boutique on P.C. Hooftstraat, further enhancing the luxury watch and jewellery offering in Amsterdam’s most exclusive shopping street.

OMEGA CEO Raynald Aeschlimann noted: “Opening an external boutique is like handing over the keys to your house. With GASSAN, I know they are in excellent, professional hands.”

Het ontstaan van Choices by DL

Debora had nooit de intentie om in het familiebedrijf GASSAN te gaan werken. Maar alles veranderde in december 2008, toen ze haar studie Fashion & Branding aan het AMFI afrondde met een eigen juwelenlijn als afstudeerproject. Wat begon als een creatieve eindopdracht, groeide uit tot de start van haar carrière binnen het familiebedrijf.

Met deze collectie zette ze haar eerste stappen richting wat later het succesvolle merk Choices by DL zou worden. “Het mooiste moment is wanneer ik, bijvoorbeeld bij de slager, iemand een Choices

by DL ring zie dragen die ik heb ontworpen,” vertelt Debora. “Mijn moeder zegt dan altijd: ‘Zeg even dat het jouw ontwerp is.’ Maar dat doe ik nooit, daar ben ik te verlegen voor.”

Debora never envisioned herself joining GASSAN, the family business. Yet everything changed in December 2008, when she graduated from AMFI’s Fashion & Branding programme with a jewellery collection as her final project.

What began as a creative final assignment unexpectedly became the starting point of her career within the family company. With this collection, she took her first steps towards what would later become the successful brand Choices

by DL. “One of the most rewarding moments is when I see someone at the butchers for example, wearing a ring I designed,” says Debora. “My mother always tells me: ‘Go and tell them it’s your design.’ But I never do. I think I am too shy for that.”

Bloomingdale’s New York

Kort na de lancering van Choices by DL kwam Debora in contact met het management van Bloomingdale’s in New York. Met een sample presenteerde ze haar concept, waarop direct enthousiast werd gereageerd. Een van de reacties luidde: “Wow, it’s just like a jewellery wardrobe in a box!” Bloomingdale’s gaf haar de kans om de hele maand december op de juwelenafdeling te verkopen, waarbij Debora zelf meedraaide met het team. “Ik besefte toen nog niet hoe bijzonder het was. Ik was net afgestudeerd, en ineens stond ik in Bloomingdale’s. Terugkijkend hierop begon ik misschien te vroeg met verkopen; het ringsysteem was nog niet volledig ontwikkeld.

Inmiddels hebben we dat geperfectioneerd met een bajonetsluiting en magneet.” Choices by DL wordt vandaag de dag nog steeds bij Bloomingdale’s verkocht.

Bloomingdale’s New York

Shortly after launching Choices by DL, Debora was introduced to the management team at Bloomingdale’s in New York. With a sample in hand, she presented her concept, which was met with immediate enthusiasm. One reaction was: “Wow, it’s just like a jewellery wardrobe in a box!” Bloomingdale’s invited her to showcase her collection throughout December on its jewellery floor, with Debora herself working alongside the in-store team. “At the time, I didn’t fully grasp how extraordinary it was. I had just graduated, and suddenly there I was at Bloomingdale’s. Looking back, I may have started selling too soon; the ring system wasn’t yet fully developed. By now, we’ve perfected it with a bayonet fitting and magnet.” Today, Choices by DL is still sold at Bloomingdale’s in New York.

Een eigen merk binnen GASSAN

Voordat Debora Choices by DL oprichtte, verkocht GASSAN voornamelijk bestaande horloge- en juwelenmerken. Debora zag echter het belang van het creëren van eigen content en het volledig in eigen hand houden van het proces: van ontwerp en productie tot verkoop.

Destijds waren er binnen GASSAN nog weinig eigen merken, waardoor ze veel zelf moest uitvinden. Met succes: ze kreeg een flagshipstore in het hoofdkantoor en in december 2009 een eigen stand op de MASTERS EXPO (toen nog de Miljonair Fair). “Dat vond ik geweldig, en dat vind ik nog steeds. Het contact met zoveel klanten is enorm inspirerend.”

An own brand within GASSAN

Before Choices by DL, GASSAN primarily sold established watch and jewellery brands. Debora, however, recognised the value of creating original content and maintaining control over every step of the process, from design and production to sales. At that time, GASSAN had few in-house brands, meaning she had to navigate uncharted territory. Her efforts paid off: she opened a flagship store at GASSAN’s headquarters, and in December 2009, Choices by DL had its own stand at MASTERS EXPO (then known as the Miljonair Fair). “I thought that was fantastic, and I still do. It is so inspiring to meet so many customers face to face.”

Aandelenoverdracht GASSAN

In 2015 vierden Debora en haar vader Benno een bijzonder dubbel jubileum: Benno werd 60, Debora 30. Tijdens het feest verraste Benno haar en haar broer David door 10% van de aandelen over te dragen. “We hadden nooit het bekende keukentafelgesprek over opvolging gevoerd,” herinnert Debora zich. “Pas later besefte ik de impact: ik werd medebestuurder van een organisatie met 500 medewerkers. Dat is een grote verantwoordelijkheid.” Toen werkte ze nog als Brand Manager van Choices by DL. Inmiddels is Debora Chief Creative Officer van GASSAN, waar ze haar creativiteit en strategische visie inzet om het familiebedrijf verder te laten groeien.

Share transfer at GASSAN

In 2015, Debora and her father Benno celebrated a special double milestone: Benno’s 60th birthday and Debora’s 30th. During the celebration, Benno surprised her and her brother David by transferring 10% of the company shares to them. “We had never had the classic ‘kitchen table’ conversation about succession,” Debora recalls. “It was only later that the impact sank in: I had become co-director of a company with 500 employees, a huge responsibility.” At the time, she was still working as Brand Manager for Choices by DL. Today, Debora serves as Chief Creative Officer at GASSAN, where she applies her creativity and strategic vision to drive the family business’s growth.

Laying the foundations for future generations

These days, Debora’s greatest satisfaction comes from making strategic decisions that strengthen the company’s foundation for generations to come. A key example is the transformation of the factory into HOUSE of GASSAN, part of a long-term vision. “I wanted to position GASSAN as a true brand, and we’ve succeeded. We stand out thanks to a strong portfolio of leading international names, but also because we create our own products inhouse. It’s all about experience and emotion, and it’s precisely that combination that makes us unique.”

THE ONLY GASSAN A CONVERSATION BETWEEN DEBORA HUISMAN-LEESER AND HER GRANDMOTHER, ANITA LEESER-GASSAN ANITA LEESER-GASSAN (90) is de dochter van Samuel Gassan, de grondlegger van GASSAN. Ter gelegenheid van het 80-jarig bestaan van het familiebedrijf ging haar kleindochter, Debora Huisman-Leeser, met haar in gesprek over familie, herinneringen en nalatenschap.

ANITA LEESER-GASSAN (90) is the daughter of Samuel Gassan, founder of GASSAN. To mark the 80th anniversary of the family business, her granddaughter, Debora Huisman-Leeser, sat down with her to talk about family, memories, and legacy.

Debora: Hoe is het voor jou om weer in dit pand te zijn?

Anita: Het blijft een prachtig gebouw. Elke keer als ik hier kom, kijk ik even naar het standbeeld van mijn vader, dat staat nu boven, op de eerste etage. Vroeger stond het beneden. Omdat ik hier niet vaak ben, voelt het elke keer alsof ik iets nieuws zie. En ik moet zeggen: het wordt steeds mooier.

Debora: Het is noodzakelijk het pand goed te onderhouden en belangrijk om met je tijd mee te gaan.

Anita: Het is prachtig geworden.

Debora: We hebben hiervoor ook jarenlang niets gedaan. De verbouwing begon tijdens de coronaperiode. Onlangs zijn de liften vernieuwd, die waren nog uit de tijd dat we het pand kochten. Ze móésten echt vervangen worden.

Ze deden het gewoon niet meer. Achteraf ben ik blij dat we tijdens de pandemie zijn gestart.

Eerst twijfelde ik, maar papa zei: “Juist nú doen.” En hij had gelijk. Omdat er toen weinig bezoekers waren, konden we flinke stappen zetten.

Debora: What is it like to be back in this building?

Anita: It was, and still is, a beautiful building.

Every time I visit, I always take a moment to look at the statue of my father, which now stands upstairs on the first floor. It used to be downstairs. Because I don’t come here very often, I see something new each visit. And I must say, it just keeps getting more beautiful.

Debora: It is necessary to ensure the property is well maintained, and it is important to keep up with the times.

Anita: It looks beautiful now.

Debora: We hadn’t done anything to it for years. Renovations began during the pandemic.

Recently, the lifts were replaced; they were still the originals from when we first bought the building.

They had to go, because they didn’t work anymore.

Looking back, I am glad we started during that period. I was hesitant at first, but Dad said, “Now is exactly the time.” And he was right. With fewer visitors, we were able to make real progress.

Debora: Jouw vader, Samuel Gassan, was de grondlegger van het bedrijf. In 1945, vlak na de oorlog, begon hij een diamantslijperij. Wat herinner jij je van die tijd?

Anita: Wat me het meest bijstaat is de fabriek aan de Nieuwe Achtergracht. Mijn kantoor zat er recht tegenover. Maar vooral de sfeer is me bijgebleven. Iedereen kwam mijn vader altijd “goedemorgen” en “goedenavond” zeggen. Hij zat aan het einde van een lange gang, en had contact met iedereen. Niemand ging naar huis zonder hem te groeten. Wist je dat zelfs jouw moeder daar werkte?

Debora: Echt waar?

Anita: Ja, zij werkte daar ook.

Debora: Your father, Samuel Gassan, founded the company. In 1945, just after the war, he started a diamond-cutting business. What do you remember from that time?

Anita: What I remember most vividly is the factory on Nieuwe Achtergracht. My office was directly across the road. But what stayed with me most was the atmosphere. Everyone greeted my father, saying “good morning” and “good evening.” He sat at the end of a long corridor and had a connection with everyone. No one ever left without saying goodbye. Did you know that even your mother worked there?

Debora: Really?

Anita: Yes, she did.

Debora: Wat betekende GASSAN voor jouw vader?

Anita: Alles. Hij was een geboren verkoper en echt een mensenmens. Hij begon als diamantsnijder en genoot intens van het vak.

Als hij een mooie das had gezien, werkte hij extra hard om die te kunnen kopen. Hij heeft ook kort in de advertentieverkoop gezeten, maar zijn hart lag bij diamant.

Debora: What did GASSAN mean to your father?

Anita: Everything. He was a born salesman and a real people person. He started as a diamond cutter and was always passionate about the craft.

If he saw a tie he liked, he’d work hard to be able to buy it. He briefly worked in advertising sales, but his heart was always with diamonds.

Debora: In 1973 vroeg hij mijn vader, jouw zoon, om bij GASSAN te komen werken. Hij zei toen: “Ik probeer het een jaar, maar alleen als ik mag stoppen zonder familiedrama’s.”

Anita: Dat klopt. Hij had eigenlijk een baan aangeboden gekregen bij de Bijenkorf, maar dat ging niet door vanwege een concurrentiebeding.

En toen is hij toch bij GASSAN begonnen. En daar is hij gebleven.

Debora: In 1973, he asked my father, your son, to join GASSAN. He answered: “I’ll give it a year, but only if I can leave without any family drama.”

Anita: That’s right. He had already been offered a position at De Bijenkorf, a department store, but that fell through due to a non-compete clause. So, he joined GASSAN and never left.

“My father was a born salesman and a real people person.”

Debora: Sinds 1990 zijn we gevestigd in dit pand, maar jouw vader overleed in 1983. Hij heeft HOUSE of GASSAN dus nooit gekend.

Wat zou hij ervan gevonden hebben?

Anita: Hij zou het geweldig hebben gevonden. Zeker omdat hij hier vóór de oorlog begon als diamantsnijder. Dat maakt dit gebouw extra bijzonder. Op zijn vijftiende leerde hij hier het vak, en nu is dit het hoofdkantoor van het bedrijf dat hij oprichtte. Dat voelt als een cirkel die rond is.

Debora: Ik ben op jonge leeftijd het bedrijf ingestapt, maar jij koos een andere weg.

Waarom?

Anita: Tijdens mijn studie werkte ik hier wel een tijdje. Ik gaf rondleidingen op de Zwanenburgerstraat. Dat vond ik heel leuk.

Maar het juridische werk trok me uiteindelijk meer. En omdat het hier goed ging, voelde ik de vrijheid om mijn eigen pad te kiezen. Daar heb ik nooit spijt van gehad.

Debora: We have been in this building since 1990, but your father passed away in 1983.

He never knew this place as HOUSE of GASSAN. What do you think he would have thought of it?

Anita: He would have loved it. Especially since he started his career here, as a diamond cutter before the war, making this building especially meaningful. He learned the trade here at the age of fifteen, and now it is the company’s headquarters. It feels like the circle is complete.

Debora: I joined the company at a young age, but you chose a different path. Why was that?

Anita: I did work here for a while during my studies. I used to give guided tours at the Zwanenburgerstraat location. I thoroughly enjoyed that. But in the end, I felt more drawn to my legal career. And because things were going well at GASSAN, I had the freedom to pursue my own direction. I have never regretted it.

Debora: Wat zou je mij willen meegeven voor de toekomst?

Anita: Blijf altijd jezelf en doe je best. Doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg.

Debora: Jij zegt altijd: ik ben de enige Gassan.

Wat betekent dat voor jou?

Anita: Dat ben ik ook. Ik ben de enige en laatste Gassan. Jij zegt het wel iets anders dan ik. Jij zegt ‘Gazan’, ik zeg ‘Gassan’. Maar het betekent hetzelfde: voorzanger. En ik vind het eigenlijk wel mooi dat ik de laatste ben die die naam draagt.

Debora: What advice would you like to give me for the future?

Anita: Always do your best and stay true to yourself. Just be yourself; that is more than enough.

Debora: You always say, “I’m the only Gassan.”

What does that mean to you?

Anita: Because I am. I am the only one left with the Gassan name. You pronounce it a little differently than I do, though. You say ‘Gazan’, I say ‘Gassan’. But it means the same: Cantor. And I quite like being the last person to carry that name.

“And I quite like being the last person to carry that name.”

Bij binnenkomst werden de gasten verwelkomd door een zee van bloemen, geheel in Bridgerton-stijl, met als indrukwekkend middelpunt een bloementoren die reikte tot aan het plafond. Debora Huisman-Leeser, bedenker van Choices by DL, verwelkomde alle aanwezige gasten persoonlijk en greep de gelegenheid aan om haar dank uit te spreken:“Vanavond presenteren wij tal van novelties, maar dat had ik nooit kunnen doen zonder de steun van onze trouwe klanten. Daar wil ik jullie hartelijk voor bedanken. Ook mijn team verdient een groot dankjewel voor hun loyaliteit en creativiteit. Dankzij hen is het ons opnieuw gelukt om schitterende nieuwe juwelen te ontwerpen en deze in een bijzondere collectie samen te brengen.”

Tussen het weelderige bloemendecor waren de nieuwe Choices by DL-stukken op een unieke manier verwerkt en tentoongesteld; als op zichzelf staande bloeiende kunstwerken. Onder het genot van verfijnde bites, heerlijke drankjes en sfeervolle muziek kregen gasten de kans om de juwelen van dichtbij te bewonderen en te passen.

Een van de absolute blikvangers van de avond was de Snake Diamond & Emerald Bracelet, een armband dat voor het eerst aan het publiek werd getoond. De bijzondere armband, afkomstig uit de samenwerking tussen Leo Pizzo en Choices by DL, bleek de musthave van de avond.

At the end of May, a truly enchanting and delightfully floral Cocktails & Bites event was held to celebrate the latest collection from Choices

by DL. For this special occasion, the Ketelhuis at HOUSE of GASSAN was transformed into a dreamy floral wonderland, filled with soft pastel hues and romantic details.

Upon arrival, guests were welcomed by a sea of flowers in full Bridgerton style, with an impressive floral centrepiece reaching all the way to the ceiling.

Debora Huisman-Leeser, the creator of Choices by DL, personally greeted all invited guests and took the opportunity to express her gratitude: “This evening we are presenting many novelties, but none of this would have been possible without the support of our loyal clients. I want to thank you all most sincerely.

I would also like to thank my team for their loyalty and creativity. Together, we’ve once again succeeded in designing exquisite new pieces and bringing them together in a truly special collection.”

The new Choices by DL pieces were beautifully displayed amongst the towering floral arrangement, each one showcased as a blossoming work of art.

While enjoying refined bites, delicious drinks and lovely music, guests had the opportunity to admire and try on the jewellery.

One of the evening’s absolute highlights was the Snake Diamond & Emerald Bracelet, a statement piece unveiled to the public for the very first time. The remarkable bracelet, a collaboration between Leo Pizzo and Choices by DL, turned out to be the musthave of the evening.

NESLIHAN KIYAK HOL FOUNDER | CREATIVE DIRECTOR Neslihan Kiyak is een Nederlandse designer van Turkse afkomst. In 2009 studeerde zij af aan het AMFI in de richting Fashion & Branding. Na jaren internationale ervaring, onder meer bij ELLE en Vogue in Istanbul, richtte zij in 2018 haar eigen label op: Studio NK. Neslihan Kiyak is a Dutch designer of Turkish descent. In 2009, she graduated from AMFI with a degree in Fashion & Branding. After gaining several years of international experience, including at ELLE and Vogue in Istanbul, she founded her own label, Studio NK, in 2018. Her clothing brand is known for high-quality, handmade prêt-à-porter with a strong feminine aesthetic and a subtle masculine edge. In 2022 verkocht zij haar succesvolle bedrijf. Na 26 jaar ondernemerschap zet zij haar ervaring nu in om andere ondernemers te ondersteunen bij de groei en het management van hun bedrijf. Tegenwoordig begeleidt ze managementteams en zet zij zich actief in voor (vrouwelijk) ondernemerschap.

Vivienne woont in Bilthoven en combineert haar werk met diverse vrijwilligersactiviteiten.

Vivienne is the former CEO of Difrax, a Dutch baby products brand renowned for its baby bottles and dummies. She took over the company in 1999 and successfully expanded it, with a strong focus on in-house product development and international growth. Besides that, Vivienne served as President of the World Association of Bottle and Teat Manufacturers and was named Businesswoman of the Year in 2016. In 2022, she sold the successful company.

Afgelopen juni, op een stralende zomerdag, werden tien krachtige en inspirerende vrouwen letterlijk en figuurlijk in het zonnetje gezet. Na het grote succes van vorig jaar presenteerden ABN AMRO MeesPierson en Choices by DL voor de tweede keer ‘10 Women to Watch’, een waardevol initiatief dat zich inzet voor het vergroten van kansen voor vrouwelijke ondernemers.

This past June, on a bright summer’s day, ten powerful and inspiring women were quite literally placed in the spotlight. Following the great success of last year’s edition, ABN AMRO MeesPierson and Choices by DL proudly presented the second edition of ‘10 Women to Watch’, a meaningful initiative aimed at creating greater opportunities for female entrepreneurs.

Benno Leeser (70), Chief Executive Officer of GASSAN, and Yves Gijrath (58), entrepreneur and founder of MASTERS EXPO, have known each other for a very long time, and it shows. Open, honest, and without avoiding any topic, they discuss everything. From the best greengrocer to the deeper values that connect them: hard work, sharing success, and of course... football. A conversation between two friends who keep each other on their toes and genuinely wish each other well.

PARTNERSHIP Benno: Hoe zou jij onze samenwerking omschrijven?

Yves: Loyaal. Voor ons beiden is loyaliteit ontzettend belangrijk. Daarnaast hechten we veel waarde aan kwaliteit. Fouten maken mag, maar liever niet te vaak.

Benno: En zeker niet twee keer dezelfde.

Yves: Nee, dat absoluut niet. Gelukkig vinden wij dat we elkaar daarop mogen aanspreken, zonder filter. Vroeger kwam dat vooral vanuit GASSAN. Jij was verder dan ik, logisch ook, gezien het leeftijdsverschil. Inmiddels is daar meer balans in gekomen. Ons partnership draait om blind vertrouwen. Als je samen nieuwe avonturen aan wilt gaan, moet je dat gewoon doen. Je weet toch nooit wat de uitkomst zal brengen.

Benno: Precies.

Yves: We geloven ook allebei in een top-downstructuur. De CEO is eindverantwoordelijk. Ik zeg wat ik vind, en dat werkt. GASSAN is top-down, maar wel met een familiegevoel, net als bij ons. Die gedeelde waarden vormen de basis van onze samenwerking.

Benno: Dat is echt zo. Ik zou het liefst niet eens een contract tekenen, maar dat kan in deze tijd niet meer. We geven elkaar een hand en daarna gaan we ervoor. Zeker in de diamanthandel was dat vroeger zo. Dan gaf je elkaar mazzal en dan wenste je elkaar geluk en werd er verder nooit een contract getekend.

Yves: Zo denk ik er ook over. Helaas kan dat tegenwoordig bijna niet meer. Maar wij zouden het nog wel kunnen.

Benno: How would you describe our partnership?

Yves: Loyal. Loyalty is incredibly important to both of us. We also place great value on quality.

Mistakes are allowed, but preferably not too often.

Benno: And certainly not the same one twice.

Yves: No, absolutely not. Fortunately, we feel we can call each other out on things, unfiltered. In the past, that mostly came from GASSAN. You were further along than I was, which makes sense given the age difference. These days, it’s much more balanced. Our partnership is built on blind trust. If you want to embark on new ventures together, you just have to go for it. You never know what the outcome will be anyway.

Benno: Exactly.

Yves: We both believe in a top-down structure, too. The CEO bears ultimate responsibility. I say what I think, and that works. GASSAN is top-down, but with a family feel, just like us.

Those shared values are the foundation of our collaboration.

Benno: That’s absolutely true. Ideally, I wouldn’t even sign a contract, but that is just not possible in this day and age. We shake hands, and then we’re all in. Especially in the diamond trade, it used to be like that. You’d say ‘mazel’ to wish each other luck, and no contract was ever signed.

Yves: I feel the same. Sadly, that’s hardly possible nowadays. But we could still do it, I think.

MASTERS EXPO Yves: Ik weet nog de eerste keer dat ik hier zat, hier in deze kamer. Weet jij nog wanneer dat was?

Benno: Dat was meer dan 25 jaar geleden.

Yves: Toen zei jij: ‘‘Ik geloof niet in adverteren.’’

Dat heb jij letterlijk gezegd.

Benno: Klopt.

Yves: Ik dacht: als je het niet probeert, weet je het nooit. Jij was trouwens een van de weinigen die de naam Miljonair meteen begreep. Daar waren er niet veel van.

Benno: Ik vond het een fantastische naam. Nog steeds.

Yves: Maar dat kan nu niet meer. Toen ik in 2002 de Miljonair Fair organiseerde, twijfelde jij ook, net als bij adverteren. Tijdens de eerste beurs, in de passagiersterminal in AmsterdamOost, deed je bescheiden mee met een stand van 36 vierkante meter. Andere partijen pakten groots uit en je zag dat het werkte. En toen kwam jouw kracht, die ik zo waardeer: voor de volgende editie in de RAI zei jij: “Ik wil 500 vierkante meter en exclusiviteit in hal 12.”

Yves: I still remember the first time I sat here, in this very room. Do you remember when that was?

Benno: That was more than 25 years ago.

Yves: Back then, you said, “I don’t believe in advertising.” You literally said that.

Benno: That’s right.

Yves: I thought, if you don’t try it, you’ll never know. You were actually one of the few people who immediately understood the name Miljonair.

There weren’t many who did.

Benno: I thought it was a brilliant name. Still do.

Yves: But it wouldn’t work nowadays. When I organised the Miljonair Fair in 2002, you had your doubts, just like you did about advertising.

At the first edition, held in the passenger terminal in Amsterdam East, you took part modestly with a 36-square-metre stand. Other companies went big, and you saw that it worked. And that’s when your strength came into play, one I truly admire.

For the next edition at the RAI, you said, “I want 500 square metres and exclusivity in Hall 12.”

Ik vroeg haar: “Wil je de beurs openen?” Zij zei: “Als jij zorgt dat mijn man een mooi diamanten juweel koopt, doe ik alles voor je.” Op een gegeven moment liepen we op de beurs en toen pakte ik haar hand en dat was zo fantastisch. Gelukkig vond mijn vrouw Tamara dat gewoon leuk. Ik weet niet of ik het leuk zou vinden als zij zo met Hugh Grant zou lopen...

Benno: Yes, Champions League, to put it in football terms.

Yves: She was genuinely lovely. I asked her, “Would you open the fair?” She said, “If you make sure my husband buys me a beautiful diamond piece, I’ll do anything for you.” At one point, we were walking around, and I took her hand; it was just fantastic. Luckily, my wife Tamara found it all quite amusing. I’m not sure I’d be as relaxed if she were strolling around like that with Hugh Grant...

CONVERSATIONS THAT COUNT Benno: Als de MASTERS EXPO achter de rug is, gaan we hier evalueren. Daarna maken we de contracten voor het nieuwe jaar. Vanuit GASSAN schuiven er vaak meerdere mensen aan. Meer dan bij jou.

Yves: Ik kom meestal alleen.

Benno: Wij praten, maar niemand begrijpt daar eigenlijk iets van...

Yves: Klopt. Het gaat natuurlijk wel om serieuze bedragen en jij doet altijd hetzelfde.

Jij gaat achter je bureau staan en vervolgens ga je op je ouderwetse rekenmachine getallen intikken. Dan kom je weer aan deze tafel zitten en dan zeg jij wat je redelijk vindt en daar heb ik mij dan meestal aan te conformeren. Wat zit je eigenlijk te tikken in dat rekenmachientje van je?

Benno: Wat ik denk dat goed is voor beide partijen.

Yves: Soms moeten we twaalf onderdelen bespreken maar niemand snapt ons, dus zijn genoodzaakt het op papier te zetten.

Benno: Once MASTERS EXPO is over, we sit down here to evaluate everything. After that, we draw up the contracts for the new year. From GASSAN, several people often join us; more than on your side.

Yves: I usually come on my own.

Benno: We talk, but no one else really understands a word of what we are saying.

Yves: True. It involves serious amounts of money, and you always do the same thing. You stand behind your desk and then start punching numbers into that old-fashioned calculator of yours. Then you sit back down at the table and tell me what you think is reasonable, and most of the time, I just have to go along with it. What exactly are you tapping into that little calculator of yours?

Benno: What I believe is fair for both parties.

Yves: Sometimes we have twelve different items to go through, and nobody can follow us, so we’re forced to put it down on paper.

Benno: Buitenstanders proberen onze relatie te begrijpen maar uiteindelijk lukt dat niet.

Niemand begrijpt hoe wij dit met elkaar doen. Maar wij begrijpen elkaar tot achter de komma. Het allerbelangrijkste is dat we elkaar vertrouwen en daarnaast willen we er beiden aan verdienen.

Yves: Je moet niet ‘slim’ willen zijn in een deal.

Benno: Daar geloof ik ook niet in.

Yves: Als je geen empathisch vermogen hebt, gaat het altijd fout. Zeker in een samenwerking van tientallen jaren moet je elkaar begrijpen.

Benno: Samen hoogwaardig werken betekent ook ruimte geven voor hoogwaardig functioneren.

Benno: Outsiders try to understand our relationship, but they never really get it. No one understands how we make it work. But we understand each other down to the last detail.

The most important thing is that we trust one another and, of course, we both want to make money.

Yves: You shouldn’t try to be ‘clever’ in a deal.

Benno: I don’t believe in that either.

Yves: If you lack empathy, it always goes wrong.

Especially in a partnership that spans decades, you have to understand each other.

Benno: Working together at a high level also means giving each other the space to perform at a high level.

FOOTBALL: ALL DAY EVERYDAY Yves: We hebben één voordeel en dat is dat we privé dezelfde hobby hebben, namelijk: voetbal, voetbal en nog eens voetbal. We staan alleen niet achter dezelfde club. Ik begrijp heel veel van Benno, maar elk mens heeft recht op een afwijking.

Benno: Gelukkig is het geen afwijking. Als je het over loyaliteit hebt, moet ik zeggen dat een Feyenoorder loyaler is dan een Ajacied.

De charme van Ajax is natuurlijk een andere dan bij Feyenoord. Als ik even bij Ajax-Sparta zit en Sparta maakt een goal vlak voor tijd, dan zit ik opeens nog maar met de helft van de mensen, want de rest is al weg.

Yves: Dat is niet waar, want ik was erbij. Er gingen inderdaad mensen weg, maar dat is hooguit 2% van de 50.000. Dat zijn er 1.000. En die 2% is áltijd het probleem, in elk vraagstuk: in het stadion, op straat, in de politiek, noem maar op.

Benno: Wat is je favoriete voetbalherinnering?

Yves: Een van de gelukkigste momenten uit mijn leven was in mei 1995, toen Ajax de Champions League-finale won. Die euforie, dat gevoel, dat kun je niet uitleggen. Hetzelfde gevoel had ik bij Real Madrid – Ajax in 2019.

In plaats van naar Madrid te gaan, ging ik met mijn zoons Yossi en Lior eten bij Aan de Poel in Amstelveen. Ik wilde het niet jinxen, maar voelde: we gaan winnen. Ze wonnen inderdaad met 4-1 en op zo een manier dat zelfs de fans van Real Madrid voor ons klapten. Dat was echt puur geluk. En dat dan kunnen delen met mijn zoons... dat is het mooiste wat er is.

Benno: Dat snap ik.

Yves: Nu ik hier over praat, wil ik wel zeggen dat het wel een moment van teleurstelling is in onze relatie. In de periode van 2019 was Ajax zo geweldig. Maar je belde mij niet om mij te feliciteren met hun fantastische spel.

Benno: Het zou zomaar kunnen dat dat bewust was.

Yves: One big advantage we have is that we share the same hobby in our private lives, namely: football, football and more football. We just don’t support the same club. I understand a lot about Benno, but everyone’s entitled to a deviation.

Benno: Fortunately, it’s not a deviation.

Speaking of loyalty, I’d say a Feyenoord supporter is more loyal than an Ajax fan. Ajax has its own charm, of course, but it’s different to Feyenoord. I’ve been at Ajax–Sparta matches where Sparta scores right at the end, and suddenly I’m left with only half the crowd, the rest have already left.

Yves: That’s not true, and I should know, because I was there. Yes, some people did leave, but it was no more than 2% of the 50,000. That’s 1,000 people. And that 2% is always the problem, in every issue: in the stadium, on the street, in politics, you name it.

Benno: What’s your favourite football memory?

Yves: One of the happiest moments of my life was in May 1995, when Ajax won the Champions League final. That euphoria, that feeling, it’s impossible to describe. I had the same feeling during Real Madrid - Ajax in 2019. Instead of going to Madrid, I had dinner with my sons Yossi and Lior, at Aan de Poel in Amstelveen.

I didn’t want to jinx it, but I just knew we were going to win. And they did, 4–1, in such a way that even the Real Madrid fans applauded us.

That was pure joy. And to be able to share that with my sons… that’s the most beautiful thing there is.

Benno: That I get.

Yves: Discussing this now, I have to say that was a bit of a disappointment in our relationship.

During that 2019 period, Ajax were playing fantastic football. But you didn’t call to congratulate me.

Benno: That might very well have been deliberate.

Yves: Ik ben dus wel voor Feyenoord als ze Europees spelen. Dan vind ik het leuk als Feyenoord wint, daar kan ik zelfs van genieten.

Maar jij kan dat niet opbrengen als Ajax Juventus wegtikt. Dat is echt een afwijking.

Benno: Dat mag jij zeggen.

Yves: I do support Feyenoord when they play in Europe. I like it when they win, and I can even enjoy it. But you can’t bring yourself to feel the same way when Ajax beats Juventus. That really is a deviated way of thinking.

Benno: You’re allowed to say that.

FRIENDSHIP Yves: We praten over voetbal, maar ook over het leven. Roddels, relaties, noem maar op.

Benno: Wij hebben een ongekende vriendschap en daar geloof ik ook in. Ik geloof in vriendschap, elkaar vertrouwen, het zijn geen ingewikkelde dingen. Wat ik waardeer in jou is je ongekende creativiteit. In de periode dat het bij ons beiden wat minder ging, want dat hoort ook bij ondernemen, moet je jezelf niet verloochenen. En jij bent daar een voorbeeld in. Dat is veel belangrijker dan een euro meer of minder.

Yves: Vriendschap ontstaat nooit in goede tijden. Als het goed gaat heb je heel veel vrienden. Maar vriendschap wordt juist getest als het slecht gaat en dat hebben wij beiden meegemaakt. Dan steun je elkaar, niet omdat je elkaar nodig hebt, maar omdat dat vriendschap ís.

Benno: For better or for worse.

Yves: Precies. Dat is DNA. Wij hebben vergelijkbaar DNA. In hoe we denken, hoe we in het leven staan. Dat is uniek en dat koester ik.

Benno: We lijken op elkaar, maar jij bent een slag creatiever dan ik.

Yves: Jij bent meer bestuurder. Ik ben een man van ideeën. Ik zie iets en wil het meteen doen.

Benno: Zoals die podcast. Wij discussiëren daar weleens over.

Yves: Jij snapt dat niet.

Benno: Er komen best positieve dingen uit een podcast, maar ik begrijp er geen moer van.

Yves: Wat begrijp je niet?

Benno: Dat er zóveel podcasts zijn…

Yves: Maakt toch niet uit? Er zijn ook heel veel auto’s.

Benno: Ik ben atechnisch. Ik heb zelfs nog een papieren agenda en ik bekijk de voetbalstanden nog steeds via Teletekst: 819. Modern, hè? Maar ik vind dat heerlijk.

Yves: Je twijfelt vaak eerst, maar daarna kun je het omarmen. En dat is goed. Iemand moet ook voorzichtig zijn.

Yves: We talk about football, but also about life.

Gossip, relationships, everything.

Benno: What we have is an exceptional friendship, and I really believe in that. I believe in friendship, in trust, without all the complicated nonsense. What I really value in you is your boundless creativity. We’ve both been through rough patches, that’s part of entrepreneurship, but you must never betray who you are. And you’ve been a great example of that. That matters far more than a euro more or less.

Yves: Friendship never starts in good times.

When things are going well, you’ve got loads of friends. But real friendship is tested when things go badly, and we’ve both been there. That’s when you support each other. Not because you need to, but because that is what friendship is.

Benno: For better or for worse.

Yves: Exactly. That’s in your DNA. And we share that. The way we think, the way we live, it’s rare, and I truly cherish it.

Benno: We’re very similar, but you are far more creative than I am.

Yves: You’re more of a leader. I’m the ideas guy.

I see something and want to go for it right away.

Benno: Like that podcast. We’ve had a few debates about that.

Yves: You don’t get it.

Benno: Some good things do come out of podcasts, but I don’t understand a damn thing about them.

Yves: What don’t you get?

Benno: That there are so many podcasts…

Yves: What difference does that make? There are many cars too.

Benno: I’m not tech-savvy. I still use a paper diary, and I check football scores on Teletext, page 819. Modern aren’t I? But I love it.

Yves: You’re often hesitant at first, but then you come around, and that’s a good thing. Someone needs to be the cautious one.

GROCERY SHOPPING Yves: Op zaterdag bellen we vaak over boodschappen. Waar je brood haalt, naar welke slager je gaat. Jij hebt je favoriete adressen, net zoals ik die ook heb.

Benno: Ik ga naar drie verschillende bakkers.

Yves: Ik rijd speciaal om voor mijn zalm in de Beethovenstraat. Groente haal ik bij een specifieke groenteman, en brood het liefst bij Le Fournil.

Benno: De Groentejuwelier heeft fantastische groenten, maar de sapjes zijn het lekkerst bij Vork in de Maasstraat.

Yves: Ik wil ook precies de juiste ossenworst, pekelvlees en filet americain. En voor appelgebak ga ik naar Kuyt. Tamara snapt dat niet.

Yves: On Saturdays, we often call each other about our groceries. Where do you get your bread? Which butcher do you go to? You’ve got your favourite spots, and so do I. Benno: I go to three different bakeries.

Yves: I’ll go out of my way just to get my salmon from Beethovenstraat. I get my vegetables from a specific greengrocer, and I prefer to buy bread from Le Fournil.

Benno: De Groentejuwelier has amazing vegetables, but the juices are best at Vork on Maasstraat.

Yves: I’m also very particular about getting the right cold cuts. And for apple pie, it has to be Kuyt. Tamara doesn’t get any of it.

FAMILY Yves: Samenwerken met familie is geen vanzelfsprekend voordeel, maar eerder een wens. Het moet op een natuurlijke manier gaan.

Je moet het willen, niet omdat het moet. Voor mij is familie het allerbelangrijkst. Volgens mij zit jij precies zo in elkaar. Als ik met jou naar Feyenoord-Ajax ben geweest en we rijden terug naar Amsterdam, dan bel je Kitty zes keer om te vertellen wat er allemaal is gebeurd. En eerlijk, dat doe ik dus ook. Als ik een deal sluit, is Tamara de eerste die ik bel. Succes moet je vieren. Niet overdrijven, gewoon hard werken, maar wél samen genieten. Geluk delen is mooi.

Benno: Heel herkenbaar. Hoe gaat het met je zoons?

Yves: Yossi is operationeel verantwoordelijk binnen ons bedrijf. Hij is anders dan ik: technischer ingesteld, terwijl ik meer outgoing ben. We kunnen fantastisch samenwerken, maar ik zet hem niet meteen in de spits. Alles op z’n tijd. Lior is 26, heeft net zijn bachelor bouwkunde behaald aan de TU Delft en gaat nu voor zijn master. Dit is zijn derde studie.

Yves: Working with family isn’t so much about being an advantage; it’s more of a desire. It has to happen naturally. You have to want to work together, not feel obligated. For me, family is the most important thing. I think you’re exactly the same. If we’ve just been to a Feyenoord–Ajax match and we’re driving back to Amsterdam, you’ll call Kitty six times to tell her everything that happened. And honestly, I’m the same.

When I close a deal, Tamara’s the first person I call. You have to celebrate success. Don’t go over the top, just work hard, but enjoy it together.

Sharing happiness is a beautiful thing.

Benno: I completely relate. How are your sons doing?

Yves: Yossi is operationally responsible in our business. He’s different to me, he’s technically minded, while I’m more outgoing. We work really well together, but I’m not throwing him straight in at the deep end. Everything in its time. Lior is 26 and has just completed his bachelor’s degree in architecture at TU Delft and is now going on to do his master’s. This is his third course of

De andere studies heeft hij niet afgemaakt, maar deze doet hij fantastisch. Hij is een snelle denker, zonder angst, maar hij moet nog groeien in het leven. Hij moet vooral zelf kiezen wat hij wil doen in het leven.

Benno: Wat wil je ze vooral meegeven?

Yves: Hard werken en de waarde van geld begrijpen. Ik vind het vreselijk dat contant geld verdwijnt. Kinderen snappen de waarde van geld daardoor minder goed. Ik reken trouwens nog alles om naar guldens: 2,2037.

Benno: Dat doe ik ook nog steeds.

Yves: Een kopje koffie kost tegenwoordig €8,50 in sommige hotels. Dat is bijna 20 gulden! Dat slaat nergens op. Ik heb geleerd dat je van een dubbeltje een kwartje moet maken. Je moet geld verdienen. Het is geen doel, maar voorraad. Ik denk dat wij daar hetzelfde in staan. Je bent altijd open over winsten tegenover mij.

Benno: Ik ben niet zo ‘money driven’. Het interesseert mij ook helemaal geen moer.

Yves: Mij ook niet. Jij bent helemaal niet money-driven.

Benno: Ik vind ook: degene met wie ik zakendoe, moet er ook beter van worden. Anders schiet het niet op. Dat is ook het verschil tussen een familiebedrijf en een beursgenoteerd bedrijf.

Wij denken aan de lange termijn.

Yves: Daarom moet Ajax van de beurs.

Benno: Daar heb je helemaal gelijk in. Ze hadden daar ook nooit op moeten gaan. Ze hebben daar niets te zoeken.

Benno: And what would you most like to teach them?

Yves: To work hard and to understand the value of money. I think it’s terrible that cash is disappearing. Kids don’t learn the value of money properly anymore. I still convert everything back to guilders, 2.2037.

Benno: I still do that too.

Yves: A cup of coffee now costs €8.50 in some hotels. That’s nearly 20 guilders! It’s ridiculous.

I was raised to turn a dime into a quarter. You have to earn your money. It’s not a goal, it’s a resource. I think we see that the same way.

You’re always open with me about profits.

Benno: I’m not very money-driven. Honestly, it doesn’t interest me at all either.

Yves: Me neither. You are not money-driven at all.

Benno: I also believe the person I’m doing business with has to benefit, too. Otherwise, what’s the point? That’s the big difference between a family business and a listed company.

We think long-term.

Yves: That’s why Ajax should come off the stock exchange.

Benno: You’re absolutely right. They never should’ve gone public in the first place. They’ve got no business being there.

MAYOR BUSINESS Yves: De stad, dat doe je met elkaar.

Benno: Wat je nu zegt is essentieel. Ik probeer al jaren de burgemeester naar MASTERS EXPO te krijgen. Ik vind dat ze daar niet terughoudend in zou moeten zijn. Zo’n event levert de stad zoveel op: taxichauffeurs, hotels, horeca... Daarom was ik blij dat de wethouder van Economische Zaken er vorig jaar wél was.

Yves: A city is something we build together.

Benno: What you just said is absolutely key. I have been trying for years to get the Mayor to attend the MASTERS EXPO. I don’t think she should be so hesitant about it. An event like this brings so much to the city: taxi drivers, hotels, restaurants... That is why I was pleased the Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs visited there last year.

Benno: Waarom zou de burgemeester van Amsterdam niet naar MASTERS EXPO komen? Daar komen 60.000 mensen naartoe…

Yves: 40.000 Benno: Laten we het op 50.000 houden, dan zitten we er keurig tussenin. Als er 50.000 mensen belangstelling hebben voor zo’n event, dan moet de burgemeester toch ook even langskomen?

Yves: Dat geeft een signaal af... Dat betekent dat ze het niet belangrijk vindt.

Benno: Ik vind gewoon dat ze het een keer zou moeten meemaken.

Yves: Als je op zo’n manier denkt, dan gaan wij als stad daar uiteindelijk aan ten onder. Want de stad is van ons allemaal en we doen het met z’n allen. We kunnen elkaar ook helpen. Ja, er is competitie, ja, er zijn meningsverschillen, maar als je een burgemeester hebt die niet neutraal is, want daar gaat het om, dan ga je een foute route bewandelen.

Benno: Dat met z’n allen, geldt heel nadrukkelijk ook voor de MASTERS. De toegang moet goed zijn, het eten en drinken verzorgd, de toiletten schoon. Op de MASTERS ben jij de burgemeester.

Yves: En jij de wethouder.

Benno: Ik ben de stoepier. Een soort propper, iemand die voor een bar staat om mensen naar binnen te halen.

Yves: Jij bent de beste stoepier van Nederland.

Je haalt iedereen binnen en zet ze aan GASSAN-tafeltjes. Die zijn altijd erg gewild.

Samen hebben we het vaak over die tafeltjes, soms hebben we daar ook discussies over.

Benno: Ik heb liever minder tafels en dat het lekker vol zit.

Yves: Ik wil juist iets meer tafels.

Benno: Zo gaat het altijd. Jij en ik praten over van alles, maar aan het einde van de dag ouwehoeren we dus ook over tafeltjes. Dat is onze manier van zakendoen.

Benno: Why shouldn’t the Mayor of Amsterdam come to MASTERS EXPO? 60,000 people attend...

Yves: 40,000...

Benno: Let’s call it 50,000 then, we’ll meet in the middle. If 50,000 people are interested in such an event, surely the Mayor should at least make an appearance?

Yves: Her absence sends a message... It says she doesn’t think it’s important.

Benno: I just think she should experience it for herself, at least once.

Yves: If that is the mindset, it will be the city itself that suffers in the end. Because the city belongs to all of us, and we have to do it together.

Yes, there’s competition, yes, people disagree, but when you’ve got a Mayor who isn’t neutral, and that’s what this is about, then you’re on the wrong path.

Benno: That “togetherness” applies especially to the MASTERS. The entrance has to be smooth, the food and drinks well-prepared, and the toilets spotless. At MASTERS, you are the mayor.

Yves: And you are the deputy.

Benno: I am also the doorman. Like a barker outside a bar, coaxing people in.

Yves: You are the best doorman in the Netherlands. You bring everyone in and seat them at the GASSAN tables. Those are always in high demand. We talk about those tables often, and sometimes we even argue over them.

Benno: I prefer fewer tables that are properly full.

Yves: I like having a few more tables.

Benno: That is how it always goes. You and I talk about everything, but at the end of the day, we are still bickering over tables. That’s just how we do business.

FINAL THOUGHT Yves: Jij vertelt wat je meemaakt, ik geef er meteen mijn mening over. Jij laat ruimte voor conclusies, ik trek ze graag.

Benno: En dat werkt.

Yves: Bij GASSAN is alles een reis. Klanten voelen zich gezien. Dat vind ik mooi aan onze samenwerking: we helpen elkaar en streven er altijd naar beter te worden. Dat zit in onze mentaliteit. En daarmee komen we weer terug bij het begin: loyaliteit. Je kunt altijd ergens een betere deal sluiten, maar je kunt ook kiezen voor wat goed voelt. En waar je blij van wordt.

Yves: You narrate what you experience, and I immediately give my opinion on it. You leave room for conclusions; I like to draw them.

Benno: And it works.

Yves: At GASSAN, everything’s a journey.

Customers feel seen. That’s what I love about working together: we help each other and always strive to do better. That’s part of our mindset.

And that brings us right back to the beginning: loyalty. You can always find a better deal somewhere else, but you can also choose what feels right and what makes you happy.

Benno Leeser was born in Amsterdam on the 22nd of June 1955. At the age of 18, he started working at GASSAN, the company founded by his grandfather, Samuel Gassan. In 1983, Benno married his great love, Kitty Weers, who had already been working at the family business since 1978. Together, they have a daughter, Debora Leeser, and formed a loving family with David and Dennis, Kitty’s two sons from a previous relationship. Although born and raised in Amsterdam, Benno is a passionate Feyenoord supporter.

Yves Gijrath was born on December 16, 1966, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. A prominent media entrepreneur, he is the founder of several magazines and books, including Miljonair, JFK, Jackie, Green.2, MASTERS, and Great Book of Greatness. In 2002, he launched the first edition of the Miljonair Fair, a luxury lifestyle event that expanded internationally, with editions held from Moscow to Shanghai. After selling the company in 2009, Yves launched MASTERS EXPO at RAI Amsterdam in 2013, a prestigious business event celebrating innovation, craftsmanship, and exclusive products.

Under his artistic pseudonym Yveske, he also creates art and develops creative concepts for high-end brands. Yves has been married to his wife, Tamara, for 30 years. They have two sons, Yossi and Lior.

Dat geldt zeker voor de samenwerking tussen het Zwitserse familiebedrijf Chopard, onder leiding van de familie Scheufele, en GASSAN. Een relatie vol wederzijds respect en een gedeelde passie voor vakmanschap.

Inmiddels werken maar liefst vier generaties van beide families samen.

When two family-owned businesses with a rich history and shared values come together, something truly special emerges. This is certainly the case for the collaboration between the Swiss family company Chopard, led by the Scheufele family, and GASSAN. A relationship built on mutual respect and a shared passion for craftsmanship. Today, no fewer than four generations of both families are working together.

Chopard werd opgericht in 1860 door LouisUlysse Chopard in het Zwitserse Sonvilier. Sinds 1963 is Chopard in handen van de familie Scheufele en groeide uit tot een wereldwijd toonaangevend huis voor haute-horlogerie en joaillerie. Chopard was founded in 1860 by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in Sonvilier, Switzerland. Since 1963, Chopard has been owned by the Scheufele family and has grown into a globally leading house of haute horlogerie and jewellery. Today, Caroline and Karl-Friedrich Scheufele lead the brand as co-presidents: Caroline as the creative force behind the jewellery collections, and Karl-Friedrich as the strategist and innovator in watchmaking.

Vakmanschap en vertrouwen De samenwerking tussen Chopard en GASSAN begon met een ontmoeting tussen Samuel Gassan, oprichter van GASSAN Diamonds, en Karl Scheufele III met zijn vrouw Karin. Wat volgde, was een hechte zakelijke en persoonlijke band die inmiddels decennia standhoudt.

Zo levert GASSAN al sinds de begin jaren ’70 diamanten aan Chopard. Binnen de GASSAN-familie wordt daar met gepaste trots aan gerefereerd, zoals David Bijlsma (COO GASSAN) het graag met een glimlach verwoordt: “Weet u waarom één van de meest iconische collecties van Chopard ‘Happy Diamonds’ heet? Omdat het diamanten van GASSAN zijn.” Een knipoog die de bijzondere band tussen beide familiebedrijven onderstreept.

Een ander voorbeeld van deze nauwe relatie vond plaats in 1990, toen David Bijlsma zijn stage liep bij Chopard.

Tijdens deze periode verbleef hij in één van de speciale kamers in de fabriek, waar alles tot in de puntjes verzorgd was – zelfs de wekker was van Chopard. Het was een veelzijdige ervaring: werken als horlogemaker, verkoper buitendienst en op de afdeling Marketing & Sales. Daarbij leerde hij enorm veel, niet alleen van de familie Scheufele zelf, maar ook van inspirerende mensen zoals de heer Drew Campbell-Smith.

Later werd deze bijzondere band nog verder versterkt toen in 2018 de dochter van Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Caroline, op haar beurt stage liep bij GASSAN. Deze samenwerking laat zien dat familiebedrijven een unieke kracht bezitten: ze denken op de lange termijn, bouwen aan duurzame relaties en hechten grote waarde aan kwaliteit, vakmanschap en vertrouwen.

Craftsmanship and Trust The collaboration between Chopard and GASSAN began with a meeting between Samuel Gassan, founder of GASSAN Diamonds, and Karl Scheufele III with his wife Karin. What followed was a close business and personal bond that has lasted for decades. Since the early 1970s, GASSAN has been supplying diamonds to Chopard. Within the GASSAN family, this partnership is referred to with welldeserved pride, as David Bijlsma (COO of GASSAN) likes to say with a smile: “Do you know why one of Chopard’s most iconic collections is called Happy Diamonds? Because the diamonds come from GASSAN.” A nod that underlines the special bond between the two family businesses.

Another remarkable example of this close relationship took place in 1990, when David Bijlsma interned at Chopard. During this period, he stayed in one of the special rooms at the factory, where everything was meticulously arranged—even the alarm clock was from Chopard. It was a diverse experience: working as a watchmaker, a field sales representative, and in the Marketing & Sales department. He learned a great deal, not only from the Scheufele family themselves but also from inspiring individuals such as Mr. Drew Campbell-Smith.

Later, this special bond was further strengthened when, in 2018, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s daughter Caroline also completed an internship at GASSAN. This collaboration demonstrates the unique strength of family businesses: they think long-term, build sustainable relationships, and place great value on quality, craftsmanship, and trust.

‘The Nightcar’ – een klassieker met een verhaal Een bijzonder hoofdstuk in deze band is het verhaal van de Rolls-Royce Corniche Cabriolet uit 1977, liefkozend ‘The Nightcar’ genoemd. Deze elegante klassieker kwam in het bezit van Karl en Karin Scheufele na het overlijden van Samuel Gassan, de oprichter van het huidige GASSAN Diamonds. In zijn testament bood hij de auto voor een zeer gunstige prijs aan.

‘The Nightcar’ – A Classic with a Story A remarkable chapter in this long-standing relationship is the story of the 1977 Rolls-Royce Corniche Cabriolet, affectionately nicknamed the ‘The Nightcar.’ This elegant classic came into the possession of Karl and Karin Scheufele following the passing of Samuel Gassan, founder of what is now GASSAN Diamonds. In his will, he offered them the car at a very favorable price.

At the time, the Scheufeles—still relatively young— felt somewhat uneasy driving such a conspicuously luxurious vehicle. They chose to use it only after sunset, when the cover of darkness offered a sense of discretion.

And so, the nickname ‘The Nightcar’ was born.

ROAD SHOW A TRIBUTE TO TIMELESS BEAUTY

Dit jaar introduceerde GASSAN een nieuw concept: de Vintage Roadshow. Deze pop-up tour bracht iconische vintage juwelen naar verschillende GASSAN Boutiques verspreid door Nederland. De aftrap vond plaats in de onlangs gerenoveerde GASSAN Boutique in de P.C. Hooftstraat in Amsterdam. Voor deze bijzondere gelegenheid werd de winkel omgetoverd tot een stijlvolle wereld vol historie en glamour.

Daarna volgden de locaties GASSAN Eindhoven, GASSAN Rotterdam en tot slot GASSAN Dam Square in Amsterdam.

This year, GASSAN introduced a new concept: the Vintage Roadshow. This pop-up tour brought iconic vintage jewellery to various GASSAN Boutiques across the Netherlands. The tour kicked off at the recently renovated GASSAN Boutique on the P.C. Hooftstraat in Amsterdam. For this special occasion, the boutique was transformed into a stylish world filled with history and glamour.

The tour then continued to GASSAN Eindhoven, GASSAN Rotterdam and, finally, GASSAN Dam Square in Amsterdam.

BY GASSAN designed an exclusive Championship Ring: a powerful symbol of pride and victory. Created in close collaboration with the club, the design unites identity and history.

Elke ring is uniek, met de naam en het rugnummer van de speler, de club-slogan, het logo van de KNVB, de kampioenssterren en uiteraard het iconische PSV-logo. Bij de uitreiking beleefden de spelers opnieuw een euforisch moment: het kampioenschap werd tastbaar in goud en diamant. Een juweel dat niet alleen de titel viert, maar ook de verbondenheid en erfenis van de club voor altijd vastlegt.

Each ring is unique, featuring the player’s name and number, the club’s slogan, the KNVB logo, the championship stars, and of course the iconic PSV logo. At the presentation, the players relived their euphoria: the championship became tangible in gold and diamonds. “I try to create designs with interchangeable elements so you can constantly reinvent your look. I always think in terms of possibilities.”

Alle creaties ontstaan in nauwe samenwerking met de goudsmeden van GASSAN, die elk ontwerp met de hand vormen, zetten en afwerken. “Doordat we onze eigen goudsmeden in huis hebben, kan een ontwerp snel tot leven komen. Een idee kan direct worden omgezet in een prototype, zodat we meteen kunnen beoordelen of het qua draagcomfort en vorm klopt.”

Toch verloopt het creatieve proces niet altijd in hetzelfde tempo als haar ideeën. “Soms ga ik iets te snel en verwacht ik dat iedereen dat tempo kan bijhouden. Een sample maken kost nu eenmaal tijd. Voordat iets écht goed is, zijn we soms vier tot vijf maanden verder. Tegen die tijd ben ik vaak alweer bezig met het volgende ontwerp. Gelukkig weten de goudsmeden die hier al jaren werken precies hoe ze onder druk moeten presteren. Ze leveren keer op keer uitzonderlijke kwaliteit en dat niveau weten ze altijd te waarborgen.” Of het nu gaat om een ring, een collier of een paar oorbellen: elk juweel vertelt een eigen verhaal. Dankzij het vakmanschap in het atelier worden talloze ideeën getransformeerd tot schitterende juwelen, zelfs wanneer er onder hoge tijdsdruk gewerkt moet worden.

All creations come to life in close collaboration with the GASSAN in-house goldsmiths, who shape, set and finish each piece by hand. “Because we have our own goldsmiths on site, a design can quickly become reality.

An idea can be translated into a prototype straight away, allowing us to immediately assess whether the fit is right.”

Still, the creative process cannot always keep up with her ideas. “Sometimes, I move too fast and expect everyone to keep up. However, producing a sample takes time.

Before something is truly finished, it can take four to five months and by then, I’m usually already onto my next idea. Luckily, our goldsmiths, many of whom have worked here for years, are used to working under pressure. They consistently deliver exceptional quality and always maintain that standard.” Whether it’s a ring, necklace or pair of earrings, each piece tells its own story.

Thanks to the expertise in the workshop, countless ideas are transformed into stunning jewellery, even under tight deadlines.

What is a tourbillon?

A tourbillon is a complex watch mechanism designed to improve accuracy by counteracting the effects of gravity on the movement. It does this by placing the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage, which spins continuously to average out positional errors. While mainly a showcase of fine craftsmanship today, it remains a symbol of high-end watchmaking.

One of them is Wijnand Muetstege, manager of the watch workshop: “My role includes ensuring that all work is carried out and completed by the correct procedures and guidelines,” he explains. “Quality and turnaround time are always our priorities but always combined with a positive working environment.”

What is a tachymeter?

A tachymeter is a scale usually found on the bezel of a chronograph watch, used to measure speed based on time traveled over a fixed distance. By starting the chronograph and stopping it after covering a known distance (e.g., one kilometer), the tachymeter scale shows the average speed in units per hour.

According to Wijnand, the watchmaking craft has changed significantly in recent years due to technological innovation: “Some components are now delivered largely pre-assembled, which saves time during assembly. Certain checks are also carried out automatically or with the aid of advanced equipment.”

Still, traditional craftsmanship remains indispensable: “Despite these exciting technological developments, watchmaking is essentially still a manual craft. Skills such as excellent hand-eye coordination, concentration, precision, and technical problem-solving remain at the core of the profession.” David echoes the importance of these qualities: “At GASSAN, craftsmanship, manual work and artisanal skill are deeply valued. We proudly showcase this to the outside world. The craftsmanship within HOUSE of GASSAN is visible to all.”

What once began as a dream has now become a tangible reality where craftsmanship and passion come together.

Since 2024, the in-house watchmaking workshop has been one of the cornerstones of HOUSE of GASSAN. Here, every timepiece receives the attention it deserves, with respect for tradition, an eye for detail, and a deep love for the craft. Time is not merely measured here; it is elevated to an art form.

Design Inspiration The Jacob & Co. Bugatti Tourbillon is the hypertwin to Bugatti’s new hyper sports car, which is also named Tourbillon. The Bugatti Tourbillon features new inventions, new complications in a new architecture that takes after Bugatti’s. These two extreme mechanisms are aesthetically, mechanically and functionally integrated. Never before has the likeness between a timepiece and an automobile been pushed that far and with such accuracy. A total of ten defining design elements are directly drawn from the car’s. The Bugatti Tourbillon case shape is the same as Bugatti’s car, with the front grille flanked by two side radiator inlets. The case sides show two large sapphire openings, shaped and tinted like the car’s side windows. The subdials are designed like the car’s dashboard and rpm counter. Its automaton emulates the car’s new V16 engine block, down to its exhaust manifolds. Even the winding crown mimics the finishings on the control knobs.

MONTBLANC Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 After striving for the greatest heights, Montblanc explores the marine universe at 4810 metres below sea level with the Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810.

The glacier pattern dial is inspired by the Mer de Glace – Sea of Ice – the main glacier on the Mont Blanc Massif. Its texture was achieved using an almost-forgotten ancestral technique called gratté-boisé. Housed in a 43 mm titanium case totally devoid of oxygen with a shield protecting the screw-down crown, this diving watch comes with a case back adorned with a 3D engraving of the view divers see when diving underneath the ice. The timepiece is powered by Montblanc’s Manufacture, COSCcertified, automatic MB 29.29 movement, with a power reserve of approximately five days, and conforms to the ISO 6425 norm for scuba diving. It is water-resistant to 4810 metres.

The showpiece of the evening was the impressive Rolex Land-Dweller, launched earlier this year at Watches and Wonders Geneva. MASTERS Summer Edition Aan het begin van de zomer was het weer tijd voor de MASTERS SUMMER EDITION. De exclusieve driedaagse viering vond plaats in hartje Amsterdam, in het elegante Hotel De L’Europe. Het event is een intiemere variant van de grote wintereditie, MASTERS EXPO, in de RAI. Kleiner van schaal, maar minstens zo indrukwekkend.

As summer began, it was once again time for the MASTERS SUMMER EDITION. This exclusive three-day celebration took place in the heart of Amsterdam, at the elegant Hotel De L’Europe. The event offered a more intimate alternative to the grand winter edition, MASTERS EXPO, held at the RAI. Though smaller in scale, it was equally impressive.

A diverse gathering of guests came together: from celebrities and CEOs to creative thinkers and connoisseurs of life’s finest pleasures. They enjoyed inspiring encounters, exceptional gastronomy, and of course, the latest trends from various high-end brands. Naturally, GASSAN was also present. Against the sophisticated backdrop, the most striking jewellery and watch trends of the season were unveiled. AMSTERDAM 750 YEARS

WEDDINGS on the RING Op zaterdag 21 juni 2025 werd de 15 kilometer lange A10 in Amsterdam omgetoverd tot één groot feestterrein ter ere van het 750-jarig bestaan van de hoofdstad. Op deze dag vonden niet alleen sport- en muziekevenementen plaats, maar stapten ook een aantal gelukkige koppels in het huwelijksbootje: midden op het asfalt!

On Saturday the 21st of June 2025, Amsterdam’s 15-kilometre-long A10 ring road was transformed into a festive venue in celebration of the capital’s 750th anniversary. On this extraordinary day, not only were sports and music events held, but several happy couples also said, “I do”, right there on the asphalt!

Tijdens het feestelijke Festival op de Ring werd ter hoogte van hectometerpaal 19,6 een deel van de snelweg ingericht als trouwlocatie voor twintig stellen en hun gasten. Voor het eerste bruidspaar, Wesley en Regina, was het een extra memorabele dag: zij werden als enigen in de echt verbonden door burgemeester Femke Halsema. Met het omdoen van hun trouwringen en het volmondige “ja” bezegelden zij hun huwelijk op deze bijzondere plek, omringd door familie, vrienden en natuurlijk de stad Amsterdam zelf.

As part of the Festival on the Ring, a section of the motorway near kilometre marker 19.6 was converted into a one-of-a-kind wedding venue for twenty couples and their guests. For the first couple, Wesley and Regina, the day was especially memorable: they were the only pair to be officially wed by Mayor Femke Halsema. With rings exchanged and a heartfelt “yes,” they sealed their vows at this unique location, surrounded by family, friends and, of course, the city of Amsterdam itself.

De overige huwelijken werden voltrokken door buitengewoon ambtenaren van de burgerlijke stand van de gemeente Amsterdam. Als blijvende herinnering aan deze unieke gebeurtenis ontvingen alle bruidsparen het hectometerpaaltje van hun trouwlocatie.

Speciaal ter ere van de 750ste verjaardag van Amsterdam werd dit jaar de Cruyff Street League georganiseerd: een groots straatvoetbaltoernooi waar meer dan honderd jongeren tussen de 10 en 15 jaar aan meededen.

De voorrondes vonden plaats op pleinen en Cruyff Courts verspreid door de hele stad; van Noord tot Zuid, en van Zuidoost tot West. De grote finale werd gespeeld op zaterdag 5 juli 2025, midden op de Dam. Daar streden de finalisten om de felbegeerde titel ‘Beste Straatvoetbalteam van Amsterdam’ en om de prachtige GASSAN Cruyff Street League Trofee. Deze trofee dankt zijn naam niet alleen aan voetballegende Johan Cruyff, maar ook aan GASSAN, een van de officiële partners van de Cruyff Street League.

In de ochtend namen Meiden Weesp en Jongens Oost de beker in ontvangst in de categorie 10–12 jaar. In de middag werden Meiden Zuidoost en Jongens Noord bekroond als winnaars in de categorie 13–15 jaar. Het was een onvergetelijke dag vol muziek, sportclinics en vooral heel veel voetbal. Voor even werd de Dam omgetoverd tot een waar straatvoetbalwalhalla voor de Amsterdamse jeugd.

In celebration of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, this year saw the organisation of the Cruyff Street League, a major street football tournament in which over a hundred young people aged between 10 and 15 took part.

The preliminary rounds were held on squares and Cruyff Courts across the city, from North to South, and from Southeast to West. The grand final took place on Saturday, the 5th of July 2025, right in the heart of the city on Dam Square. There, the finalists competed for the coveted title of Best Street Football Team of Amsterdam and the stunning GASSAN Cruyff Street League Trophy. The trophy owes its name not only to football legend Johan Cruyff, but also to GASSAN, one of the official partners of the Cruyff Street League.

In the morning, Girls Weesp and Boys East lifted the trophy in the 10–12 age category. Later that afternoon, Girls Southeast and Boys North were crowned champions in the 13–15 category.

It was an unforgettable day filled with music, sports clinics, and, above all, football. For one day only, Dam Square was transformed into street football heaven for Amsterdam’s youth.
