Please put a penny…

No. I am not asking you for money. There are enough charities out there begging for funds. I am thinking about that children’s rhyme: Christmas is coming. The goose is getting fat. Please put a penny in the old man’s hat”. There are probably thousands of folks worried about getting through Christmas. I hope community groups like ours can help in any ways possible.

This month I have to report the sad loss of our member Dennis Jones. He was a loyal supporter and contributed to many of the lively discussions that arise after our weekly speakers. Our thoughts go out to his wife, Marylyn and family.

Having just celebrated our Diamond wedding anniversary, my wife and I have just returned from Italy where we simply wallowed in Puccini. We were in Lucca (his birthplace) and attended four concerts by the daily concerts group ‘Puccini e la sua Lucca’. It is masterminded by our friend, maestro Andrea Colombini. If you love opera, you can enjoy some 150 free concerts he has recorded and put up on the web. Try www.puccinielasualucca.com

This month we are enjoying the following talks:
“Out and about in the old Flintshire”
by Geraint Griffith,
“My radio childhood” by Alan Tiltman,
“Jack the Ripper” by Dereck Arnold, and
“Lady Charlotte Guest” by The Venerable Bernard Thomas.
A wide variety and undoubtedly, a source for much after-talk discussion.
