Have you ever tried tomato ice cream or a refreshing tomato lemonade? In Närpes, Finland’s number one greenhouse city, it’s absolutely possible!
NÄRPES IS a place where tradition meets innovation, and this is especially evident in its unique culinary experiences. At Linds Kök, a restaurant located inside a greenhouse, you’ll find yourself surrounded by tropical warmth, fragrant herbs, palm trees, and lush lime trees. Everything grown on-site is used in the kitchen to create flavorful dishes with surprising twists — like the unexpectedly delicious cucumber panna cotta for dessert.
It all began over 100 years ago when Valdemar and Anna Mattfolk brought a few tomato seeds home from America. Today, Närpes is known as Finland’s tomato capital, producing
60% of the country’s tomatoes and 50% of its cucumbers.
You can also experience the versatility of tomatoes in refreshing tomato ice cream, crafted by Närpes Glassfabrik, or a revitalizing tomato lemonade from Öfvermark Lemonad — a taste experience you won’t forget!
But it’s not just tomatoes and cucumbers that thrive in Närpes. The city's many greenhouses cultivate peppers and other vegetables, along with year-round flower production. Gardening enthusiasts can visit local nurseries and explore rows of vibrant flowers,
while at Marita’s Blommor, you can purchase homegrown tomatoes and cucumbers straight from the source. Locally grown vegetables are also sold in farm shops throughout Närpes — so why not bring a little taste of Närpes home with you?
Whether you prefer enjoying cucumbers in a creative dessert or admiring colorful floral displays, Närpes is a place full of flavor and color!

Throughout the week, you can enjoy everything from concerts and dance performances to pride parade and our very own Activity day for local associations. The grand finale? A spectacular celebration!
For a unique theater experience, visit Öjskogsparken, where Närpes Teater performs its summer plays in the authentic Närpes dialect. The rotating grandstand makes the audience part of the performance, as scene after scene unfolds in the picturesque surroundings.
No summer in Närpes is complete without a visit to Fagerö Folkpark, where people of all ages gather to dance, laugh, and enjoy live music on warm summer nights. Over the
years, many have found love here under a starlit sky, with the dance floor full of life. At the end of summer, Fagerö also hosts a huge and popular flea market, where visitors and locals come together to hunt for unique finds and soak up the lively market atmosphere.
As autumn approaches, it's time for Närpes Mat & Mystik, a beloved annual event in early September celebrating local food, craftsmanship, and culture. Stroll through cozy market stalls, taste homemade delicacies, and witness a traditional Asian dragon dance while enjoying cultural exhibitions and performances across Närpes. This event captures the essence of the town, blending flavors, traditions, and mystery into an unforgettable experience.
In December, Närpes embraces the Christmas spirit, hosting charming Christmas markets throughout the region. These festive gather-
ings offer the scent of mulled wine, unique handmade crafts, and beautiful holiday music, making it the perfect place to find personal and heartfelt Christmas gifts.
At the heart of Närpes’ cultural scene is the Frans Henrikson Hall, the city's cultural hub, where concerts, theater performances, stand-up comedy, and more take place all year round. Frans Henriksonssalen also serves as movie theatre.

Närpes, with its impressive coastline stretching over 700 kilometers, is a place where the sea and its people have coexisted for centuries. At the edge of the land, endless horizons unfold, with both nature and history telling their unique stories.
WHAT IS now lush farmland and dense forests in Närpes was once the seabed. The land here continues to rise by more than 8 centimeters per year. For centuries, coastal inhabitants were puzzled by this phenomenon. Why was the shoreline shifting? Why were harbors becoming shallower, and fields appearing where previous generations had cast their fishing nets? Many believed that the water was disappearing. Over time, it became clear that the land itself was rising. Today, land uplift remains an ongoing process, continuously shaping the unique landscape of Närpes.
One of the coastal gems is Gåshällan, a rocky island where the sea stretches endlessly westward. Visitors are welcomed by a peaceful guest harbor managed by Närpes Sailing Club. The island’s eastern side is sheltered, featuring harbor spots and charming fishermen’s huts, while the western side show-
cases the sea’s power, with waves carving the rugged shoreline. Guests can enjoy a barbecue house, sauna, and playhouse, and during the summer, Gåshällan comes alive with events such as Open House and Poker Run. Over time, Gåshällan has merged with the nearby island of Långbådan, home to a nature station run by Metsähallitus (the Finnish Forest Administration). Here, visitors can take part in outdoor activities and educational programs centered around nature.
For those who prefer to admire the sea from the mainland, Blaxnäs, Finland’s westernmost village, is a perfect choice. Here, the landscape dramatically meets the sea, and from the fishing harbor in Nämpnäs, you can watch fishing boats returning with the day’s catch— a reminder of the sea’s continued importance to local life.
Närpes is a place where the sea has not only shaped the landscape but also the people and their stories. One of the most fascinating historical events linked to the region is the secret intelligence operation Stella Polaris, in which classified materials were secretly transported across the sea to Sweden. A memorial in Nämpnäs honors this operation, and at Öjskogsparken, visitors can explore the Stella Polaris Museum to learn more about this significant part of local history.
This is a coastal region full of life, history, and a sense of being close to the infinite. Here, past and present meet, with the sea binding everything together.

Welcome to the scenic Öjskogsparken outdoor museum, where you can step back in time and experience life in a traditional farming community. Öjskogsparken features over 20 historic buildings that bring the past to life.
ONE OF the highlights is the charming Bengtsgården, a well-preserved 18th-century farmhouse. Everything is arranged as if the household members might return at any moment, giving visitors the feeling that time has stood still. At Haga’s General Store, an authentic late 19th-century shop, you can see how people once purchased everything from fabric and farming tools to candy dispensers. Nostalgic rationing cards remind visitors of the challenges of wartime.
Another must-see is the unique and fully equipped pharmacy museum, complete with a laboratory where plants were once dried for medicinal use. It offers a fascinating glimpse into historical medicine and healthcare.
For history enthusiasts, the Stella Polaris Museum is a must-visit. Operation Stella Polaris was a secret intelligence mission carried out in the final stages of the Continuation War
between Finland and the Soviet Union in 1944. The operation aimed to transfer Finnish intelligence materials and personnel to Sweden to prevent them from falling into Soviet hands when Finland signed an armistice. This mission was crucial in preserving valuable information and expertise.
Just a short walk from Öjskogsparken, you’ll find Närpes Church, whose oldest section dates back to the 15th century. Visitors are often captivated by the unique church stables—small red wooden buildings with shingled roofs lining both sides of the road. These stables once housed horses while their owners attended church services. Once a source of pride for every farm, the church stables are now carefully maintained by the congregation. On bright summer evenings, Öjskogsparken comes alive when Närpes Teater performs its popular summer plays at the unique rotating grandstand.
For those eager to explore more of Närpes' history, the local museums in Övermark and Pörtom are well worth a visit. In Övermark, you can learn about Närpes’ first post station, while Pörtom houses a special collection from Berga Glassworks, which operated from the late 18th century for nearly 100 years. At the Cornelia lifestyle boutique, visitors can explore a privately owned museum for free or fo for a mystery walk with historical elements. Don’t miss Folk costume day at Cornelia on August 5th—a celebration of tradition and culture.
