“Asaresultofthatmeeting,Mr.ChenmadeamilliondollarpledgetoHoraceManninexchangefo preferentialadmissionstreatmentforhischildren,”accordingtothelawsuit,filedbyformerLake5 MediaassistantDanielHayward.
HawyardalsoaccusesChenofcheatingonhistaxesforyears claimingthattheadmissions placementpaymentsshouldhavebeenreportedtotheIRSastaxable“unrelatedbusinessincome,” accordingtothelawsuit,whichwasfiledin2020andunsealedinMay.

Thehyper-selectiveprepschool’stuitioncostsnearly$60,000annually,accordingtoitswebsite,and hasamere10percentacceptancerateforkindergarteners.
EricRosen,aformerfederalprosecutorwhoworkedonthe“VarsityBlues”collegeadmissionscandal cases,saidtheallegationsagainstChenandHoraceMannlikelyhingeonhowexplicitthepurported dealwasbetweenChenandtheschool,Insiderreported.
Simplyhintingatorhopingthatadonationwillresultinafavorisn’tillegal,hesaid.
HaywardalsoaccusesChenoffalselyreportingthathepaid$500,000in“rent”toacompanycalled CTBSEverblueLLC whenheinfactusedthefirmtobuy$22,000inwineforhimselfandart lessonsforhiskids.
IfHaywardprovesthatChen,hiscompaniesorHoraceManncheatedontheirtaxes,hewouldsta tocollectashareofanybacktaxespaidtothestate.
