Two Top Tips for Moving Home Furniture With so many things to take care of, moving home can be a stressful time, with the act of moving furniture being a particular source of stress for a lot of people. Many will be familiar with the arguments that often ensue when two people try to manoeuvre a couch through a doorway, or the stress that comes with trying to carry a large and floppy mattress without losing your grip on it. This article contains two handy tips to help take the stress out of moving house furniture. While it’s possible to employ furniture removalists to do the heavy lifting for you when you’re moving house, it’s often necessary to move items out of certain rooms in order to clean them – and this is where knowing a few tips can come in handy.
Tip 1 – Carry Smart When it comes to moving items that require two people to lift, you should carry especially long or tall items in a high and low manner. This means that if you have two people at each end of a long piece of furniture, such as a filing cabinet, one person should carry the top of the item and the other carry the bottom. This way, both people carrying the piece of furniture will have their hands around hip height, providing more control. Moving house often involves carrying items up and down stairs and this method makes the task much easier, as the carrying angle will approximetely match the slope of the house stairs. Tip 2 – Use a Mattress Sling Moving home usually involves, at some point, the moving of the dreaded bed mattress. Large and unruly, mattresses can be a nightmare to move, especially when it comes to navigating them through doors and up and down stairs. But with the help of a mattress sling, the job doesn’t have to be too difficult. A mattress sling can be made from a length of rope that’s around one metre longer that the mattress itself. This rope should be threaded through the mattress handles and small loops to create handles at each end. Before tying the loops, however, a small length of PVC should be placed over the rope ends to stop the rope from digging into your hands. Now all you have to do is simply flip the mattress over so that the sling is on the bottom and you’ll be ready to lift with ease!
