Inspection of Sale Cattle

All cattle will be at the sale site by Friday, August 31st. Prior to that time cattle may be viewed at the individual consignors’ farms, please call and stop by whenever you are in the area.

Heifer & Steer Giveaway - On Sunday September 2nd we will raffle off a free open heifer and show steer to two lucky Juniors. Please have your juniors sign up at the buyers registration check in area for this give away. The giveaway will take place during the Foundation Female Sale and winner must be present in order to win.

Livestock Judging Teams - This year we will not be hosting a Livestock Judging Contest for the first time in many years. It came to our attention last year that our new location does not accommodate enough room to display all of the sale cattle as well as host a contest at the same time. We apologize for not being able to continue hosting this contest and we would also like to thank everyone who took part in this contest over the years. If any teams would like to workout with their Juniors with our sale cattle please feel free to come out anytime on Sale Week and we would be more than happy to let you get in some practice time.

Please make all hotel arrangements early. Since this is a holiday weekend, and we live in a rural area, hotels book fast. We have blocks of rooms at Best Western Plus & Hampton Inn, in Macomb, IL and Americ Inn Lodge & Suites in Monmouth, IL. Hotels in Macomb are closest to sale site.

Airport Locations

For those who wish to travel by plane, the Peoria and Moline airports are located 70 miles from Macomb. There is also an airport in Monmouth, IL, no commercial airlines, but is available for private planes. Call before the Sale, and we will have some one pick you up in Monmouth.

Terms of the Sale & Guarantees

Cattle sell per the terms & conditions of their breed associations. Announcements from the Auction Block on Sale Day regarding the cattle selling in this sale will take precedence over the information printed in this catalog.

No cattle will be loaded until paid for. Terms are cash, check with proper ID (i.e. Driver’s license) or Master Card/Visa will be accepted with a 3% fee. For example, if you are the successful bidder at $1,000 and you charge your purchase using your credit card. Your credit card statement will show a payment of $1,030 to Dwyer & Dwyer LLC. A 2% per month interest charge will be added on all outstanding account balances.

If you can’t attend the sale, contact one of the owners or consultants for information regarding our sight unseen buyer guarantee. We will arrange for a member of the sale staff to discuss the cattle with you. Bidding can be done via phone or by a confidential bid prior to the sale.

Please call between August 30th - September 1st to obtain a bidder number. We will arrange to have someone call you when the lot(s) you are interested in, enters the sale ring. Please note that our sale will start on time and will move quickly, so be prepared to make your bids promptly.

Herd Health

The buyer has within 21 days following the sale to re-pregnancy test their purchase(s). All bred females have been examined safe in calf by Dr. Huston, and sell that way. If any animals are found open within those 21 days you must notify Bob at once for an adjustment to be made. All animals have been tested as required by a licensed veterinarian for the selling in the State of Illinois and are selling subject to the various health requirements of the state to which they are destined. All females are OCV’s unless stated otherwise. Actual herd health programs will be included on the supplement sheet provided during the sale weekend. Genetic Testing

Updated genetic test results will be available sale week on the Supplement Sheet. Results found on the supplement sheet will take precedence over statements made in this catalog.

Sexed Semen Guarantees

Due to the fact that sexed semen purchased only guarantees the chances of a heifer being 90%, we will not be able to guarantee that a heifer will result from the pregnancy. We do however guarantee that sexed semen was used on the lots listed as such.

Registrations

All half-blood or higher bred cattle will be registered if they bring $2000 or higher, otherwise transfers will be the responsibility of the buyer. Please leave a name for transfer at the clerk’s table, or call/e-mail Cathy Dwyer, bcd1981@hotmail.com within the week after the sale.

Guest consignors frequently transfer cattle personally; Cathy passes on all transfer information to the responsible parties.

Trucking

We will assist you with your trucking arrangements no matter how many head you purchase. If you purchase 10 head or more, we will guarantee that the buyer will spend no more than $200 per lot purchased to have the cattle trucked (If the trucking bill comes to over $200 per lot, we will pay the additional cost).

Liability

Anyone attending the sale attends at their own risk. Lowderman Auctions, Dwyer’s, the guest consignors, and the sale personnel will not be held responsible for any personal injury or loss for those attending the sale.

Embryo Guarantees

All embryo lots being sold with a guarantee are only guaranteed if a certified embryologist performs all embryo work. Shipping cost is the responsibility of the buyer and the seller will comply with the most efficient and economic method of delivery. Shipping for embryos & semen must be made within 8 months of the date of sale. If the seller has not been contacted within 8 months of the sale the semen and embryos will become the property of the seller.

Welcome to the 22nd installment of the Foundation Female Sale, it is with a lot of excitement and anticipation that we offer you this set of genetics and live cattle lots. The cattle and genetics for your appraisal in this year’s offering is as deep and diverse as any group we have set before you on Labor Day weekend. I would first off like to say that we are humbled to have been able to continuously offer up to each of you the cattle and genetics that we are able to locate throughout our travels during the course of a year’s time, and that each of you have found our offering worth your consideration for the past 22 years. We are also so lucky to have been able to have nearly the same crew work our sale for all of these years.

It is no easy task to set forth on the journey each and every year to put together this offering, yet we feel that by Bob and I taking the time to travel all across the country to hand select each of the lots in this sale we are able to bring before you a quality product that will add value to your program for years to come. We do not take lightly the fact that there are many places to buy your next donor or replacement female throughout the course of a year, and we feel that our auction is truly unique in that we bring forth cattle and genetics from all across the country to one location for you to appraise in the flesh. While this year’s offering includes over 55 consignors please note that we have made stops at over 150 different operations to widle down to the offering listed in this sale book. Between Bob and I we have put in over 26K miles of road time locating these cattle. We have taken the time to save you time out of your busy schedule and money spent on the road to select your next cow family.

2018 has started out as a year that has brought forth challenges from multiple different directions but challenges that, not unlike any other year in the history of beef production will be over come. From export challenges, to the ever changing weather patterns, to in fighting amongst breed associations a lot of noise has created challenges to our way of life. While these challenges are real, those willing to go against the grain are almost always the ones who profit the most when the situation corrects itself. In 2012 I quoted Warren Buffet in saying “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when other are fearful”, and those words were so true at that time and I believe they need repeated today. That year many Registered AI bred cattle were more conservatively priced around $2K. Within two years commercial bull bred cattle were bringing those same exact dollar figures, and in many instances more. If there ever was a time to dive into the industry now is the opportunity to build a program that will withstand through any economy that may be faced. If you look deeper into market trends the numbers of heifers put into feed yards this year are higher than they have ever been which indicates that a decline in cow numbers is just beginning to start. Once the Holstein cattle work through the system look for pound cattle and fat cattle prices to increase rapidly. Now is the time to put yourself in a position to capitalize on the next surge in bred cattle. The offering presented here is loaded with registered 100% safe AI bred cattle under the age of 4, females who have the longevity and type and kind to be in position to cash in the most when the surge begins.

As you study this catalog please note that we put our main emphasis on eye-appraisal and cow families. For the better part of the last decade many breed associations have pushed a numbers based approach in the selection department. While numbers may hold some value when it comes to running herds in the 200-1000 head world that emphasizes selling stock for market price, with very limited inputs (i.e. AI, ET, registrations, halter breaking, & added feed), I’m not sold that those of us with 20-200 head herds that are based on selling stock for a premium benefit from the numbers as much as we do from cow families and phenotype.

Personally I do not blame the associations for pushing these numbers to target the large scale producers, but I do feel that they have hindered many small producers who have blindly followed the noise and have made selections based on data instead of a focus on phenotype and dollar production records. Many of these small producers have purchased cows, bulls, or genetic lots based off current EPD’s on sale day only to find out that those numbers change dramatically before their purchase is even able to hit the market place. In my own opinion if a person was instead to base their selection criteria based on phenotype and belief in the genetics of certain cow families he/she would be much better off in the long run. Be sure to study the genetic offering as well as the cow family lots in this offering, the cattle & genetics selected for this sale have a history of raising value added seed stock based on no numerical value other than the all mighty dollar, which is the only number that matters in the real world.

As beef producers each of us is given the right to make cattle in the image in which we each believe is correct, and I feel it is time for each of us to take back that image from the associations/pundits and raise the type of cattle we like to feed, breed, calve, and sell! At the end of the day we are the ones carrying the feed bucket, breeding/calving the cows, as well as making the buying and selling decisions, not the person sitting at the desk with their degree hanging on the wall. As soon as those who write the articles in seed stock publications start putting their own skin in the game I’ll start putting stock in their opinions over those who live the business day after day. The cattle and genetics represented in this offering are the type and kind that we feel will make a positive impact in any operation regardless of size or scale. These lots also represent the type that will produce progeny that will top any sale regardless of if you sell at the auction barn, on-line, or at a production sale.

Lastly we would like to thank each of you for the opportunity to do what we love and somehow make a living at it for the last 22 years and we hope to continue to earn your business for years to come. As you study this year’s offering you will see that many of the live lots sold as well as many of the genetic lots go back to purchases made through this sale over the years. We have been so fortunate to retain a great group of repeat bidders and buyers over the course of the last two decades and we do not take lightly your trust in us and our sale. Annie K, the cover girl for the Shipwreck Cattle Company program and arguably one of the most impressive percentage Simmental females we have ever seen in the flesh. She was a dominant producer until she met her untimely demise with limited frozen genetics on inventory. One of her best matings was to the late Wide Body, a bull that has sired as many high sellers and show ring champions as any bull in the breed relative to the number of units used. If able to locate, Wide Body semen has commanded in excess of $1,500/Unit and $900 per IVF slot! 214C is a direct daughter of Annie K and sired by Wide Body, a mating that will never be created again! Many maternal sisters have been campaigned successfully and are not employed in top programs across the country.
