We would like to welcome each of you to the 48th Annual Mark of Excellence Sale. This year’s offering is as deep as it has ever been and offers quality bulls and females for all types of cattle operations. The cattle being offered represent some of the finest genetics you will find in the state and are backed by some of the best donor cows to ever roam the rolling hills of Iowa. The state of Iowa is unlike any other when it comes to the commitment to the Simmental breed, as evident by hosting the largest Simmental Show in the nation each and every year at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. With this commitment to the breed you can rest assured that as you view this catalog as well as the cattle in person sale weekend that you are being given the opportunity to select fault-free cattle that will add to your bottom line for years to come.

The 2017 calendar year witnessed some big gains in the fat and feeder cattle markets and the first part of 2018 is looking to follow suit. As I type this letter one of the brightest sectors of the Agricultural community is cattle production, and this sector is truly paying big dividends to those of us willing to put in the long hours calving, making hay, and breeding cows. In order to continue to add to your bottom line for the coming years we will offer up a tremendous set of bulls who will be sold with complete weights, scan data, and EPD information. Truly nothing will be hidden or held back, we will give you the buyer all the tools needed to select the next herd sire for your program.

On top of the bulls being offered we will be selling a tremendous set of females who have the ability to produce the next big time show heifer or go out and make a great replacement female for your herd. All of the cattle being sold are tested free or parentage free of all known genetic defects and are up to date on all vaccinations so you can rest assured that every animal sold will become an asset to your program for years to come.

The 2018 Simmental Junior Nationals will be held just up the road in St. Paul, Minnesota from July 2-7, 2018.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend one of these events I would strongly encourage you to load up the trailer with the family and go try it. The AJSA and the ASA do a great job putting on these events and they make for a great opportunity for your Juniors to network and gain life skills. The open heifer division of this sale is studded with individuals that will make great show projects for your juniors as well as then go on to develop into productive cows in your herd.

Dwyer Cattle would like to personally thank the Iowa Simmental Association for allowing us to manage this sale, it is truly an honor to get the chance to work with some of the best herds of Simmental cattle this state has to offer. For the past few decades this sale had been managed by Larry Martin Cattle Sales along with Greg Miller, we would like to take this opportunity to thank both of them for building this sale to the level it is at today. Both Larry & Greg have done a tremendous job over the years of marketing some great Simmental cattle through this sale, and we hope to continue on their tradition of Excellence.

Out of a Shear Pleasure daughter of our Portia donor, he hit the ground at just 68 pounds, the lowest birth weight of our fall bulls. He was our top indexing fall bull at weaning at 910 pounds and out top indexing fall bull as a yearling at 1512 pounds. His calving ease, growth, maternal, and carcass numbers are top notch. This bull comes from a set of embryos we purchased from the Sim Magic sale in Denver from the Werning program of South Dakota. We were hoping for a red heifer but we got this guy instead and we certainly are not disappointed when the calf is this good. He is out of an outstanding cow that has produced many high sellers and top producers. Sequoia grew like a weed, is big boned, big bellied and packed full of red meat. Quick Guide to ASA EPDs & $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): The most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.

In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A & B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15 unit difference would be expected in their progeny. Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more at weaning than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades.

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade & yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Iowa Bull Buyers Guide • Every bull selling will be free of all known genetic defects either by genetic testing or by pedigree. The ASA abnormality policy is a scientifically based approach to managing and ultimately reducing the incidence of genetic abnormalities in the Simmental breed. Visit the ASA’s website www.simmental.org to learn more.

• All bulls must meet strict Iowa Beef Expo performance standards:

Minimum weight per day of age of 3 lbs.

Minimum adjusted yearling weight of 1100 lbs.

Minimum scrotal circumference of 33 cm • All bulls selling will be ultrasounded for marbling, backfat, and ribeye area. Data will be adjusted to 365 days of age.

• All bulls must pass a breeding soundness exam, be halter broke, and have an acceptable disposition.

• All bulls selling are guaranteed breeders.

These tough standards are in place to give you, the buyer, a premium and problem free product. Let your dollars go further by purchasing bulls who have passed this test!

Using API & TI: First determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described before, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all purpose type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring 100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a 50 API bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd x 4 yr. = $6,000).

A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
