We would consider it an honor and a privilege to have you join us December 12th for the 6th Annual “Buildin’ A Brand” Production Sale. Held for the first time at our new sale facility at the ranch, just south of Blakesburg, Iowa.

It’s very encouraging and much appreciated, to hear all the positive feedback from folks that have purchased cattle from us over the past few years. Regardless wether they have gotten one of the very top prospects for a donor or a gooseneck load later on in the sale. The reports are consistently the same. The females purchased have developed into good milking, sound uddered, easy fleshing, just good functional cattle in general. Which tells us that we’re hitting the mark that we’ve been striving for, for many years.

This year’s offering is highlighted by several of the most amazing Donna descendent’s we have offered for sale.

None held back...the best of the best are here for your appraisal, as well as our first ever set of Upper Class daughters to sell. These girls need to be viewed in the flesh. It’s just hard to appreciate their three dimensional build from a photograph. We also need to bring to attention the first set of Pays to Believe daughters represented by our featured consignor, Schooley Cattle Co., they certainly won’t disappoint.

With this year’s sale being held at the home there has been a lot of extra work and construction in preparation for the event. Work that wouldn’t have gotten done without the help and skills of some very good men. We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to each and everyone that has had a part in this venture!!

We also want to thank everyone that’s been with us year in and year out. Bob & Nick Dwyer along with Jered Shipman are men that are more to us than just our sale management and auctioneer. Sexed Semen & Ultra-Sound Checks: Since sex semen is only 90-95% accurate we cannot guarantee the sex of calves resulting from matings with sexed semen. We cannot 100% guarantee correct sexing on pregnancies but the vet who ultra-sound checked for Schooley has been used in the past and has been very accurate.

Sandeen Donna 8386 - In 2012

Sandeen Donna 4232 may well have the most to offer of any bred heifer we have sold to date. She is constructed with a great deal of elegance and a tremendous amount of stoutness from a skeletal design standpoint. She covers her tracks well with a large hoof and ample bone. She possesses a wide hip, and that massive sweeping rib cage that the Donna’s are so well noted for. Yet still has a very feminine look through her front one-third with a long neck, attractively positioned up out of the top of her shoulder. From a phenotypic and genetic standpoint, this one is right all the way. Her dam, 8386, has proven her worthiness to carry on the highly respected “Donna” family name in the Simmental breed, just as her ancestors have in the maternal sectors of the Angus. I have no doubt that Sandeen Donna 4232 will earn her own pages in the Simmental history books one day. She’s just simply bred too many generations deep with consistently productive matrons to not become one herself.

Much like her full sister, Lot 1, this heifer has amazed us with her ability to maintain an excellent body condition while on grass all summer even though she possesses a little extra size and scale when compared to some of her contemporaries. The efficiency and fleshing ability in these Donna females coupled with their fertility is unsurpassed. If you will notice, every single one of these daughters of Donna 8386 & 7386 are settled AI in the first two services.

We definitely have to appreciate the practical attributes that this female brings to the table, however I believe she also has more to offer in terms of show cattle production. Wouldn’t it be amazing to raise show heifers that not only looked the part, but would actually go on and breed, milk and be productive for another 10 or 12 years. I believe that’s the calling for females like Donna 4532, as she’s a long spined, square hipped, big middled matron with an upheaded, proud appearance and like most all of the 8386 daughters, has a very “easy to be around” sort of disposition.

Donna 4838 is very efficient in her type and kind and near flawless in her structural make-up. She probably mirrors her mother the most of all in terms of phenotypic likeness and size. This is a cool marked heifer that has been intriguing since she was just a calf. 4629 is simply flawless from a structural stand point and from the time she was 5 months old, has had a massive rib cage much like the Upper Class offspring exhibit. This is most definitely my kinda cow. She’s a moderate framed, easy fleshing, wide centered female thats ideal in her hip shape, and muscle expression. All while maintaining an attractive profile and tremendous flexibility, and overall soundness when on the move.

She’s very level in her hip structure and flat in her shoulder, making her ideal to cross with some of the heavier muscled type bulls that we use today; such as Lock n Load and Upgrade bloodlines. Maybe her perfect mating would be to line her up with Upper Class to unify the positive attributes of the Donna Family.

Complete and fault free are two descriptive phrases that one might use when examining this heifer. She too shares a pedigree with the Sandeen Donna 3001 female that topped the bred heifer sector of our 2014 Buildin’ A Brand Sale, and I’m not sure that 4136, along with a few others, give anything up to that highly regarded sale highlight. It’ll be interesting to see which of these High Voltage x Donna sisters becomes the fan favorite by sale day. They are all similar in the fact that they are big bodied, nice fronted, sound structured cattle. However they do each have subtle differences. The 4776 heifer has a slight advantage over some in terms of performance. She’s a bigger, stouter heifer than some with extra substance of bone and a big square hip. She would be another heifer that I sure would seriously consider working to Upper Class to enhance the Donna Family characteristics.

4386 is one that I have really appreciated all along. She is absolutely flawless from a structural standpoint.

No doubt, when viewed in person, she does give up some power and performance to some of her counterparts.

However, anyone who truly understands structure and longevity and what a cow that lives to be 20 looks like as a heifer will really appreciate this female! The ones that last a long time are not the biggest, stoutest, heaviest muscled cattle like we love to look at. They are the ones that are a bit more modest in their frame and muscling, but superior in their structural integrity, udder quality, and fertility... just like Sandeen Donna 4386 will prove to be.

This is an incredible trio of baldy heifers that just a few years ago would have started this sale. They are just slightly more modest in their frame size than their sisters, Lots 1 & 2, but they certainly don’t give up any stoutness, and overall mass and dimension. These are exactly the kind of cattle that have led us to garner such a high opinion of the Lock n Loads. They’re long fronted, wide centered, three dimensional type cattle that have a disposition that is second to none and real world fleshing ability. Each of these production oriented females settled first service AI, just solidifying the fact that fertility runs deep in their lineage!

We sampled the Hard as Steel bull a couple years ago just thinking that by the way he was bred and some of the comments we had read in catalogs where his offspring were selling, that he might produce our kind of cattle. After seeing the tremendous performance of the bull calves in a moderate framed package, and the real world fleshing ability, and structural integrity of the females. We have now flushed a few cows to him and are very excited and impressed with what we have seen. This 4125 heifer is absolutely the kind of female I love to make cows out of. I wish she was just a bit friendlier, but from a phenotypic standpoint she is very good. She has a structural build with longevity in mind and possesses the capacity and fleshing ability to thrive on fescue. This will be one beautiful female when she calves, as she will have a picture perfect udder and ample milk supply coming from generations of these traits being bred in along with unquestionable fertility.

We have been very satisfied with our Lock n Load calves for several years now, however after getting 2 crops of these 1143’s under our belt we have begun to utilize him in our ET program rather than his sire. 1143Y tends to transmit many of his own characteristics such as; more bone, squareness of hip, softness of middle, and heart girth, and he pounds the ground with a very large, perfectly shaped hoof. All in all he just flat makes good cattle that are functional and easy on the eyes.

These 1143Y son’s are a bit younger, but they are certainly impressive when viewed in person. The club calf guys will appreciate the hair on these 1143Y’s. The 534C bull possesses a big hip, lots of middle, and a perfectly designed front end. He has plenty of bone and his dam has placed either a bull or bred heifer in this sale every single year since she’s been in production, and they have all been at the top end. The 565C bull is a little greener in his condition, but is made nearly identical to 543C. He too is backed by a very impressive dam. You will find around here that we don’t keep a lot of bulls, but the few that make the cut are very nice and must be backed by multiple generations of good cows. Our theory is a female will have one calf a year (unless in ET) but a bull will produce your entire calf crop for the year, so they better advance your herd in a positive light.
