Introduction to Rail

Simple, smart technology By applying the latest innovations in lighting and control technology, we can deliver effective solutions to a range of challenges. This could be immediate alerts of maintenance requirements to ensure regulatory compliance or AI assisted identification of those carrying out a deliberate act.
Safety through innovation
DW Windsor and our smart IoT solutions brand, Urban Control are leading the way on anti-trespass solutions for platforms and level crossings, dynamic wayfinding to make passenger movement safer, and integrated systems that help vulnerable passengers get the assistance they need.
Energy Saving By offering upgrades to efficient LED products throughout a station, we can help your asset become cost and energy efficient. Simple controls, presence sensors and smart dimming profiles can also be used to limit wasted energy during off-peak times.

Lighting in each part of a station, from the car park to the platform, has a specific function and the regulatory standards differ depending on the area of the building as well as the location, number of passengers and staffing levels. These requirements are detailed in standards such as the Rail Safety and Standards Board’s (RSSB) RIS-7702-INS – ‘Rail Industry Standard for Lighting at Stations’ as well as the Department for Transport Codes of Practice. Other standards must also be followed such as BS EN 12464-2:2014, the standard for exterior lighting and BS 8300 for creating inclusive and accessible environments. But there are also other factors that should be considered when designing the lighting scheme. This includes possible adjustments required when upgrading from traditional to LED lighting, reducing the glare that can affect the drivers’ line of sight and ensuring the lighting supports the effective operation of CCTV. More general considerations such as reliability, whole lifecycle cost, light pollution and architectural characteristics should also influence the design. At DW Windsor, our decades of lighting experience and involvement in a broad range of rail projects, both large and small, means we can help ensure the design complies with the standards as well as fully meeting the needs of passengers and operators.

A consortium consisting of DW Windsor, Urban Control, the Department for Transport, InnovateUK, FirstGroup, The University of Nottingham and the RSSB, embarked on a study to address how issues including increased passenger numbers and overcrowding could be alleviated with intelligent lighting solutions.
DW Windsor worked with our smart IoT technology brand, Urban Control, to develop new wireless, connected lighting and sensors controlled through cloud-based software.
The aim was to reduce dwell time and improve customer experience and safety as well as improve the flow of passengers on and off the train. We used Gobo projected lighting on the platform to indicate where passengers should stand to align with the carriage doors and allowing a freer flow of passengers disembarking.
The University of Nottingham’s Human Factors team and Geospatial Institute headed a research study to identify the typical movement related issues a station faces. This led to the identification of clear opportunities for using light to influence movement behaviours with FirstGroup, who agreed to a proof of concept trial at Chippenham Station.
The Opportunity Information conveyed through lighting can be processed quicker and more intuitively than traditional printed signage. Research has also shown that lighting can influence behaviour, including the speed and direction of movement.
Handrail and stairway lighting
We installed pulsing handrail lighting to indicate the intended direction and pace on the stairway. Coloured LED lights were also placed at the top of the staircase to align people when descending. Passenger wayfinding and positioning
The new lighting trial installed at Chippenham Station is part of an innovative project to demonstrate how lighting can be used to aid way finding, improve passenger movement and enhance safety.
StationChippenham Case Study

This has been a very exciting project to be involved in. Innovative initiatives of this nature can open the door to a world of possibilities and are setting the standard for future customer experiences. “
