2020-2021 Highlights Throughout the past year, we have built on our mission by: continuing to support faculty through both one-on-one sessions and group workshops bringing to fruition four Student Technology Fee grants devoted to innovative approaches to teaching and learning supporting student learning through peer tutoring in less commonly taught languages collaborating with Division leaders on a P3 proposal to develop an instructional kitchen developing a Humanities Lab devoted to mapping the multilingual communities of Iowa City piloting an assessment tool to measure student language proficiency supporting the creation of open educational resources for language instruction engaging students in culture and language through various media

Mission The Center for Language and Culture Learning (CLCL) supports the University of Iowa faculty, graduate assistants, and students in the teaching, learning, and promotion of language and culture in the Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (DWLLC) and beyond.

Workshops Support We support the faculty of the Division of World Languages Literatures and Cultures in multiple ways –through daily one-on-one appointments; through instructional technology workshops; by creating course and event flyers; by building websites; and by assisting with special projects.

Projects

Startalk

Startalk is federal grant program funded by the National Security Agency to promote the study of critical languages to middle and high school students. We are supporting the Chinese Program with their Startalk initiative through website development and logistical support.

Virtual Reality videos for Spanish Medical Interpretation Class We are helping to create virtual reality videos for Spanish faculty teaching medical interpretation. The goal of these videos is to put learners in the position of an actual interpreter so that they can develop real world skills.

Anne Frank Tree Project We are helping to organize and fundraise for events surrounding the planting of an Anne Frank sapling on April 22nd 2022.

CALL Lab

The Computer Assisted Language Learning Lab was a $180,000 grant which entailed a complete remodel of an audio lab. The new space has 24 of computers, each equipped with Sanako, Camtasia, and Microsoft Office Suite software.

SignAll Lab

The SignAll lab is is a compact, single user workstation that uses 3D camera imaging to accurately recognize and model individual movements on the screen so users can learn, practice, and correct their sign language.

The lessons and practice sessions provide students with immediate feedback, and give teachers actionable data for tailoring instruction to meet individual needs.

Area 651

Virtual Reality Studio

Area 651 is a space dedicated to helping faculty develop virtual reality projects for use in the teaching and learning of languages and culture. Faculty can make use of 10 Oculus and 2 Vive headsets to lead their students on virtual tours or engage them in other kinds of extended reality opportunities.

They can also learn to create their own VR experiences in this lab.

We were awarded several Student Technology Fund grants this past year to develop instructional technologies for the teaching and learning of languages.

We employ 9 tutors in 8 different languages: Arabic, ASL, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili. The tutors provide a hybrid approach offering sessions online and in person.

Tutor Visits

DiLS Through the Directed Independent Language Study program, students, faculty and staff are paired with a language tutor to work on developing oral proficiency skills. In 2020-2021, we created opportunities for language learning for students working on Fulbrights, poets, playwrights, and those seeking to learn their family's heritage language.

Since remodeling in the summer of 2020 and with the return to campus, the Center has become what we had envisioned it would be: a vibrant hub for language and culture learning.

Students enjoy the new living area, where they can meet with study groups or for conversation hours; they can reserve a small group room for quiet study or to work with a peer tutor; or they can relax and make a craft in our new makerspace.

The Global Seal of Biliteracy is a nationally recognized micro-credential that students can earn by taking a series of proficiency assessments. The tests measure the four skills (speaking, writing, reading, and listening), and students can earn one of two levels of fluency –Functional (Intermediate Mid) or Working (Advanced Low). This fall, we piloted a program and tested 17 students, three earned Working Fluency and 14 earned Functional. This test is not only a good professional credential for students, but also allows language programs to assess their students according to national averages.

Humanities Lab Iowa Intersections: A Multilingual Narrative Project Iowa Intersections is a collaboration between the Center for Language and Culture Learning, UNESCO City of Literature, and Kirkwood Community College English Language Program. In the first phase of the project, Kirkwood students were invited to write and film a short story about their immigrant experiences in their native language. The stories will be edited, translated, and publicized and shared on social media; the goal is part of an effort to map the multilingual communities of Iowa City and to give voice to the multiplicity of languages and diverse cultural experiences here.

Multilingual Writing Center The CLCL currently oversees the Spanish Speaking and Writing Center and is seeking to find ways to elevate the profile of this Center and add other languages to promote multilingual writing at the Writing University.

Hawkeye Global Kitchen The Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures collaborated with the Division of Interdisciplinary Programs to write a P3 proposal to create an instructional kitchen for the teaching and learning of languages and cultures. While seeking funding sources and developing collaborations with offices across campus, including International Programs and the Office of Student Wellbeing, we are also developing resources for faculty to use to develop cooking-related courses.

Beyond supporting the teaching and learning of languages and cultures, we play a significant role in communicating the value of our programs, whether through our websites, our branded marketing materials for course and event promotion, and our work with students to create testimonial videos about their language learning experiences. We have also developed a vibrant and engaging social media presence.
