SOULS IN HARMONY

WELCOME JASON HAYTER Head of Dwight School Seoul Good evening Dwight students, staff, families, and friends; to the students and families from Yongsan International School of Seoul and to all of our special guests both here in Seoul and those joining us from around the world. It is my pleasure to welcome you to Souls in Harmony, this year’s version of the Dwight Network's annual Global Music Festival. It is an honor for us here at Dwight Seoul to be hosting, especially this year of significance for Dwight, as Dwight Seoul recognises its 10th Anniversary and the network celebrates 150 years of Dwight schools! It has been said that in music we do not achieve harmony when everybody sings or plays the same note. Only notes that are different can harmonize. The same is true with people. This epitomizes Dwight schools as we look for the uniqueness in each of our students as we Ignite the Spark of Genius in every child. Music has a powerful way of creating community and unity across cultures, and is accessible for all to experience and enjoy. Music promotes diversity, creative thinking, discipline, leadership, and vulnerability. Music provides a unique opportunity for groups of people to express emotion and come together in Harmony. The Souls in Harmony music festival brings together our local and global network of students that each have their own unique ‘note’ to connect and express themselves in a celebration of unity, peace and harmony. After nearly two years of limited collaborative music making in our communities, coming together tonight marks a special occasion for Dwight schools around the world. This evening you will hear a diverse range of selections reflecting on the importance of community and unity through harmony. Our performers come to you from Dwight School Seoul, Dwight New York, London, Shanghai, Dubai and Global Online, Yongsan International School of Seoul, and our local community of parents, staff, friends, and family.

SOULS IN HARMONY

ABOUT DWIGHT SCHOOL SEOUL Dwight School Seoul welcomed 297 students from 28 different countries, with 54 faculty and 21 business staff to the brand new campus on September 25, 2012. It is the First IB Continuum School in Seoul, comprising the Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programmes. Dwight is the only school selected out of hundreds of schools by the Seoul Municipal Government to open a model IB World School in Seoul. With an enrollment of 530 students, Dwight School Seoul continues to be first in innovation and inspiration, a school known for its community and a culture of firsts. Seoul, is the capital of Korea, the land of the “morning calm.” A modern cosmopolitan metropolis with almost ten million residents, Seoul comfortably merges high-tech, multi-lingual subways, modern skyscrapers and K-pop culture with ancient palaces. Although founded in 1395, Seoul dates back more than 2,000 years with the settlement around Han River. Like the Thames and Seine, the river snakes through Seoul making it Korea’s most historically and culturally vital waterway with dedicated bike lanes coursing to north, east, south and west, leading to mountains, ancient city walls and out of Seoul to other cities, mountains and beaches beyond. In and around Seoul, bikers and hikers alike will almost never run out of new paths to explore. Seoul has four distinct seasons, each with its own special Korean customs and holidays. Korea is a leader in global information and communication technology. Bloomberg Innovation Index 2021 ranks Korea as number one most innovative country in the world. And Seoul is the most wired city on the planet and reigns in internet connectivity with the fastest 5G networks. A network of highly efficient and interconnected public transportation systems keeps the city humming at an exceptional speed. Subways, buses, taxis, and high-speed trains (KTX) are easily accessible for everyday life or weekend excursions. Seoul is only a few hours away from Hong Kong and Tokyo and a hub for flights jetting all over Asia. The city is the new art hotspot in Asia with over 260 private and public museums and galleries. Seoul is a healthy city, and the medical care is second to none with highly skilled English-speaking healthcare providers and state of the art medical facilities throughout the city. Seoul’s thriving expat community boasts fantastic cuisine from all over the world and plenty of opportunities to network. A city that never sleeps, it is also one of the safest cities in the world.

The Arts are an integral component to a Dwight education. At Dwight School Seoul, a variety of opportunities are offered for students to express themselves in Music, Drama, Theatre, Film, and Visual Arts. The Music Department at Dwight School Seoul, includes the IB curriculum Music classes, non-curriculum classes: bands, orchestra, choirs, Happy Violin, and specialized Music Elective classes, as well as music ensemble offerings as part of our before and after school program. Students develop skills in listening, performance, and composition as they interact with a diverse range of musical styles and instruments. Students are immersed in a wide variety of topics and projects, collaborating across grade levels and arts disciplines. At the local level, students prepare for performances at exhibitions, ceremonies, competitions, festivals, assemblies and the annual school production. The Dwight Seoul Orchestra, formed in 2017, includes student musicians of string, wind, brass, and percussion in Grades 6-12. The group started as 20 dedicated musicians rehearsing in the early hours before school, and has expanded today into a strong 50 member ensemble. The Dwight Seoul Orchestra regularly performs at school events, including assemblies, concerts, graduation ceremonies, and special events. As part of a global community, students in the Dwight Seoul Orchestra learn through direct practical experiences the importance of the Arts as a means of communication across a range of times and cultures. The Dwight Seoul Chorus has been a part of Dwight School Seoul for over 10 years, consisting of students from Lower and Upper School. The Chorus not only performs for school-related events, such as Graduation Ceremonies, school-related festivals and celebrations, but has been a part of community events in Seoul, the Orchid Light Festival, and the SIWA Bazaar. In 2019, The Dwight Seoul Chorus, together with students from other international schools had the honor of performing with Nat Conway in front of over a thousand people during the opening ceremony of the Australia Day 2019 celebrations put on by the Australian Embassy at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. At the global level, throughout the years our students have been involved in the Dwight Global Music Festival in New York, Shanghai, the Dwight London Choir Festival, and the Global Virtual Concert last spring. This year, we are thrilled to host a hybrid concert, having our global team join us virtually, and our local community perform live, at the beautiful and prestigious Lotte Concert Hall.

In 2012, James was a recipient of the Harvey and Louise Glatt Scholarship Award at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival. Upon moving to South Korea in 2016, James performed for various BCCK events at the British Embassy and various jazz clubs such as Gangnam’s “Once in a Bluemoon” and “All that Jazz”. EMILY BELL Born and raised in Iowa, USA, Emily Bell is an accomplished music educator who strived to bring the love of music through each of her students. Starting from a young age, Emily learned many musical instruments and had the privilege to work with well-renowned voice coaches. She went on to receive a Bachelors in Music Education for vocal, instrumental, strings and general music, with an emphasis in voice, from the private institution of Wartburg College. One of her favorite joys of learning was to be a part of the multiple ensembles in different ways, playing the baritone saxophone in the top jazz band, to her beloved french horn in the orchestra and wind ensemble, and singing in a variety of styles in the chamber and jazz choirs. Emily’s passion for music led her to not only teach overseas for eight years in Kuwait and Korea, but to perform all over the world with chamber choirs, jazz choirs, orchestras and as a soloist. Not only is she passionate about music, but also in drama and theater, where she has performed in community theaters around the world, from pantomimes to musicals. Performing has always been a huge part of her life, and something that she strives for her students to also love and enjoy. At Dwight, Emily has had the wonderful opportunity to teach drama and music within the PYP, and help jump start the band program throughout the middle school. After classes, she’s had a wonderful time teaching the choir students as well as co-directing the musical for this school year. Emily truly believes that education is interactive; it lives in the body and shines through when students take a piece, make it their own, and share it with their audience, forging connections between generations and cultures.

We are running a very lively arts department with many enthusiastic and gifted students. Music is taught across all year groups from K1 (age 3) through to the IB Diploma level. Along with our expert music teachers we also have a very dedicated team of visiting music teachers who provide individual instruction in a wide variety of instruments, from percussion to strings. These visiting teachers contribute to a Conservatory program with a high uptake across the school, including a highly popular Saturday morning component which also reaches out to students from other local schools. Although we traditionally have a slight bias toward jazz, rock, pop, and world music, the classical genre is gaining popularity with a growing number of students participating in our chamber ensemble. Across our community — musicians or not — there is a great level of appreciation for the annual musical collaboration within our Dwight family. We are excited to participate in, and nurture, a global exchange across Dwight campuses that showcases the amazing musical Sparks of Genius we have within our community.

Within Jan's many different working environments, he has had the opportunity to experience how much a strong performing arts section can contribute towards an inspiring school life, as well as towards the academic success of students. After an initial spell at what was then known as Woodside Park International School in the early 2000's, Jan returned to teach at Dwight London in 2010 because of its international ethos and emphasis on the arts. Jan feels privileged to be in the position to pursue professionally what he loves most: all different types, styles and genres of music.

department caters to students of grades 10, 11 and 12. Apart from the academic IBDP focus, the department serves as a bedrock for multiple electives like Chinese Folk Music, a student choir, contemporary and jazz guitar, and a Jazz ensemble. The facilities in the department provide support for student-led clubs which have led to significant projects like the QD chamber orchestra ‘Glow’, music production and EDM clubs, and pop-rock bands. Our students perform regularly in multiple on- and offcampus platforms all year round. They actively engage in the QD Arts Season which is a month-long celebration of all art subjects. As a department, we are excited to meet musicians from around the globe and are eagerly looking forward to the Dwight Global Music Festival, Seoul 2022!

ABOUT OUR SHANGHAI MUSIC DIRECTOR

GOURAV BISWAS Gourav Biswas is a versatile multi-instrumentalist from Eastern India. Starting with Indian classical at a young age, he was conducting chamber ensembles at an early age of 18 while also touring with his blues-rock band. Each of these varied experiences have contributed to his overall love and appreciation for world music. He was a finalist guitar player for the reality show MTV India 'Rock On' in 2009. Even after having a degree in classical piano later, he would still choose the guitar for improvisation and regularly jam with other musicians. He is still active in the music community, performing with professional musicians in Shanghai and composing for smaller projects and his own independent releases. Since starting as an IBDP Music Teacher in 2015, he has empowered many students to reach their true artistic potential and achieve results they never dreamed were possible.

At Dwight School Dubai, we have many opportunities for students to reach their full musical potential. The school's mission is to ignite the “Spark of Genius'' in every child and therefore we value the Arts programme. Music at Dwight School Dubai is an integral part of the schools’ DNA. Students from Pre-K to Grade 8 have music as a key subject area. In addition, it's an art elective for Grades 9 to 12. The school is very strategic to ensure students have maximum exposure to the music program. We are in the very unique position to offer IB Diploma Programme music for our students, providing them a wider range of future university and employment opportunities. The International Baccalaureate is interdisciplinary and therefore the music and homeroom teachers collaborate to make conceptual connections which enriches the curriculum across the school. Music does not sit in isolation and is therefore transparent in many subject areas. In addition to the Music curriculum, we have a dynamic ensemble program
