The fall sale season is just about upon us! And there is a full slate of sales planned in and around Ohio.

Starting off on September 26th will be the Maplecrest Farms Production Sale. I plan to go through their sale offering before the sale, so if anyone is unable to attend and needing assistance making purchases, let me know.

This year American Angus will be holding the Annual Meeting in Overland Park, KS as part of the Angus National Convention and Trade Show.

More information about this event is online at www. angusconvention.com. This will be a great event and will be very education for breeders of all sizes, as the new trade show will repesent many of the top beef and Angus related companies. Additionally American Angus will be holding Angus University which will include a series of workshops on many aspects with the management of Angus cattle.

The Buckeye Best of Both Worlds Sale -Volume 4 is to be held on November 21st. Any one interested in consigning cattle to the sale needs to complete the consignment form available at www.buckeyebbw.com by September 15th. If you have any questions regarding the sale or potential consignments, please give me a call.

Industry News & Notes National Angus Convention: Three Reasons to Register Early

Delegates and alternates who register before Sept. 8 entered to win complimentary hotel stays.

The 2015 Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show is just around the corner, and the premier event hosted by the American Angus Association is sure to attract a crowd. Angus breeders, commercial cattlemen, feedyard managers and others involved in the highquality beef chain will gather Nov. 3-5 in Overland Park, Kan. Here are three reasons to visit www.angusconvention.com today to complete your registration.

Delegates, alternates entered to win free hotel accommodations. The Association is offering two complimentary hotel nights for one delegate or alternate during the convention hotel block. Those registered before Sept. 8 will be eligible to win, and the Association will contact the recipient Sept. 9. Delegates elected to represent their state during the Association’s 132nd Annual Convention may attend the business meetings for free; however participation in convention, education, meals, entertainment and trade show requires a full convention registration.

Early $75 registration presents best value. Convention attendees are encouraged to register online and make their hotel arrangements prior to the Friday, Oct. 2, early deadline. Master in Animal Sciences graduate degree offered at OSU

The Department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio

State University is offering a new Master in Animal Sciences graduate degree. This program is different from a typical Master of Sciences (MS) in that research is not required and it is a non-thesis program. Acceptance into the program is similar to the other graduate programs in that an application must be submitted to the OSU Graduate School (http://gradsch.osu.edu/), and after its review, the application is forwarded to the Graduate Studies Committee in the Department of Animal Sciences for review. Requirements include a minimum of 3.0 GPA and a Graduate Records Examination score of at least 300. Admission decisions also are determined by availability of space in the program, availability of an advisor, and their area of interest.

Students accepted into the program must complete a minimum of 35 credit hours, complete a final exam in the form of either a comprehensive written exam, professional project, research proposal, or a culminating paper, and present an exit seminar. The credit hours for the program must include the following: Core Courses (9 cr hr) Specialization (choose one area; 11-12 cr hr) Animal Sciences Nutrition Meat Science Electives (13-14 cr hr)

This graduate program is aimed at individuals who wish to increase their knowledge and competence at the graduate level in preparation for entering the industry, attending professional school, or becoming an academic or outreach educator. The courses are not offered online, thus students need to travel to campus for the instruction, and standard tuition fees for graduate school apply.

With research not being required, the program is more flexible than the traditional MS program. Industry News & Notes Follow Us to Kansas Participate in a day of ranch tours before attending the National Angus Convention.

Last fall, the inaugural Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show proved to be one of the industry’s must-attend events for its membership, education and trade show venues. This year, participants will have the added opportunity to see some great cattle.

The Kansas Angus Association will host a tour Monday, Nov. 2, prior to the official start of the convention, which is slated for Nov. 3-5 in Overland Park, Kan. The Kansas Angus Tour will allow attendees to spend a day visiting area Angus farms and ranches. Buses will depart at 7:30 a.m. from the Overland Park Convention Center’s courtyard level parking lot.

“The state of Kansas is home to several prominent Angus operations, and we are looking forward to showcasing their programs as part of the preconvention tour,” says Jeff Mafi, American Angus Association regional manager for Kansas and Oklahoma.

The tour will make three tour stops: Mill Brae Ranch, Maple Hill, Kan.; May-Way Farms Inc., Baldwin City, Kan.; and Chair Rock, Greeley, Kan.

A bus will depart before the Chair Rock visit for tour participants wishing to attend the Angus Foundation Supporter Recognition Event that evening in Overland Park.

An additional $75 registration fee applies for the Kansas tour, and attendees can reserve their spot when registering for the National Angus Convention & Trade Show. Mill Brae Ranch sits on the northern edge of the Flint Hills, which stretch from Kansas to Oklahoma. The largest area of tallgrass prairie in North America, the rolling Flint Hills still remain intact due to the bedrock near the surface.

“We burn the prairie every year from early April on to May, and that’s unique to this ecosystem because the grass thrives on the fire-management practice,” says Mark Nikkel, Mill Brae Ranch managing partner.

Just a few short miles down the road from Mill Brae, the tour setting will change from rolling hills to an urban landscape at May-Way Farms Inc. Owner Jason Flory and his family manage cattle from a 10-acre fescue pasture to 1,000 wide-open acres in the Flint Hills.

“A lot of the breeders on display at the May-Way stop will be more of the fescue, cool-season-grass cattle managers,” Flory says. “Participants will see a large contrast of management with a short amount of miles on the tour.”

Flory and his family have been involved in the Angus business for 15 years, getting their start in showing cattle.

“I think any time fellow cattlemen can network and learn, it’s a great opportunity,” Flory says.

2015 LEAD Conference Success in Seattle, 2015 LEAD Conference

NJAA members travel to Washington to experience agriculture in the northwest.

The Leaders Engaged in Angus Development conference, commonly known as LEAD, is a four-day event that brings together National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members from across the nation to learn about leadership development, agriculture and what life is like in other parts of the country. This year, more than 110 NJAA members ranging in age from 14 to 21 years old traveled to Seattle, Wash., Aug. 6-9 to take part in the annual event sponsored by the Angus Foundation.

“This year’s theme was ‘Success in Seattle’ and it was so much fun getting to explore the city with our Angus juniors and watch them experience new parts of the country, while learning about leadership and building friendships for years to come,” says Jaclyn Clark, American Angus Association director of events and education.

While in Washington, participants visited the famous Pike’s Place Market, toured the Space Needle and spent time on the beach. They also traveled to Taylor Shellfish Farms and Bellwood Acres, an apple orchard and distillery. When not exploring all that the Pacific Northwest had to offer, the juniors attended leadership workshops and heard from industry experts and motivational speakers.

Eric Fernandez, a first-generation Angus producer from Pine Mountain, Ga., says his desire to learn more about the breed is what brought him to the LEAD conference. At 18 years old, he was one of the older members of the group but said he felt like a rookie, since it was his first time at the conference. However, he said it was worth it to gain technical and leadership skills to take home to his herd.

“This was a great opportunity for me to travel to Seattle and meet over 100 like-minded people who share the same common goal of improving ourselves and our cattle,” Fernandez said. “I really enjoyed the Genex presentation, as it taught me all the opportunities available, specifically to juniors, to learn more about genetic technologies and hands-on training in artificial insemination techniques.”

A day on the farm

The home of Taylor Shellfish Farms is in the shallow Samish bay, where a lighthouse made completely from oyster shells — the only one in the world — resides.

Nicole Gilmore, a farm employee, explained to the group that shellfish farming is just like any other type of farm. The Taylor family uses tractors, plants their shellfish in rows and works to protect their crop from predators. They are the largest producer of farmed shellfish in the United States, and operate a business of nearly 500 employees and 11,000 acres of tidelands along the Washington coast and British Columbia. They also operate additional hatchery and nursery facilities in Hawaii and California, a shellfish distribution business in Hong Kong, and are partners growing Fiji Pearls with J. Angus juniors participating in the LEAD conference were able to walk out into the bay, where the shellfish were growing and handle harvested live product.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, being from the Midwest,” says retired National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) Leadership Director Jessica Radcliffe from Weston, Wis. “It was a great way for the juniors to see an industry of farming that they probably aren’t used to, and that’s what we want to relay to them — that we are all involved in agriculture, no matter what product you are producing.”

A short drive north brought the group to Bellewood Acres and Distillery, a family-owned apple orchard and processing facility. John and Dorie Belisle, who planted the initial orchard in 1996 with the intention of producing wholesale apples, operate the farm. No longer wholesale with more than 25,000 fruit trees, the orchard is one of the largest U-Pick operations in western Washington. In addition to the apples, they produce numerous value-added products including apple cider, peanut butter, dried apple chips and distilled apple spirits.

During their visit, juniors were able to tour the orchard and distillery learning how the farm uses apples in various ways for their customers.

The LEAD conference is coordinated by the NJAB, who led team-building activities, leadership workshops and encouraged participants to step outside their comfort zones and meet new friends. Attendees also attended seminars on the Certified Angus Beef® brand, cattle genetics, artificial insemination and marketing presented by industry professionals.

Juniors enjoyed a presentation by Josh Shipp, an entertainer and motivational speaker, who taught them to triumph over hardships in life. The group also received conversational training from Madlynn Ruble, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), on how to advocate for beef.

“LEAD is really life-changing and you get to meet a lot of people and have experiences that you will never get from any other association or club,” said Alana Eisenhour of Wellsville, Pa. “The greatest thing is being able to leave a better leader, advocate and well-rounded person by having these experiences.”

Deadline to Enroll in Key Farm Bill Safety Net Programs Approaches Producers have Until Sept. 30 to Sign Up for ARC/ PLC and MPP-Dairy

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3, 2015 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Val Dolcini reminds farmers and ranchers that they have until Sept. 30 to enroll in several key Farm Bill safety net programs – Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC), Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and the Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPP-Dairy).

“These programs provide important risk protection for farm and dairy operations, so it is important not to miss the deadline for enrollment,” said Dolcini. “Producers already have elected ARC or PLC, so now is the time to sign the contract and enroll for the 2014 and 2015 crop years. I also remind dairy operations to enroll for coverage in 2016.

Just $100 covers 90 percent of milk production at a $4 margin, and with incremental premiums, up to an $8 margin can be covered.”

ARC and PLC programs trigger financial protections for agricultural producers when market forces cause substantial drops in crop prices or revenues. More than 1.76 million farmers and ranchers are expected to sign contracts to enroll in ARC or PLC. Covered commodities under the programs include barley, canola, large and small chickpeas, corn, crambe, flaxseed, grain sorghum, lentils, mustard seed, oats, peanuts, dry peas, rapeseed, long grain rice, medium grain rice (which includes short grain and sweet rice), safflower seed, sesame, soybeans, sunflower seed and wheat. Upland cotton is no longer a covered commodity. The elections for each farm stay in place through 2018, but ownership and shares can be adjusted through the annual enrollment. MPP-Dairy offers protection to producers when the difference between the milk price and the average feed cost (the margin) falls below a certain dollar amount selected by the producer. Participating dairy farmers will remain in the program through 2018 and pay a $100 administrative fee each year. Producers also have the option of selecting a different coverage level during open enrollment each year.

MPP-Dairy payments are based on an operation’s historical production, which will increase by 2.61 percent in 2016, if the operation participated in 2015, providing a stronger safety net. These risk management programs were authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill, which builds on historic investments made in rural America over the past six years, while achieving meaningful reform and billions of dollars in savings for

the taxpayer. Speaker Sensation at the National Angus Convention

Entertaining and educational, an impressive line-up headlines Angus events Nov. 3-5 in Overland Park, Kan.

The complete program for the 2015 Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show, which takes place Nov. 3-5 in Overland Park, Kan., features an incredible slate of speakers.

Highlights of the week’s events include an International Angus Genomics Symposium on Tuesday, Nov. 3, sponsored by Neogen®’s GeneSeek Operations, during which keynote speaker and genetics pioneer Richard Resnick will discuss the evolving progress of genomic technology. The afternoon will provide hands-on Genomics Innovation Workshops sponsored by Zoetis.

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Angus University, sponsored by Merck Animal Health, returns to follow “A Story of a Steak” and share insights on increasing quality in the nation’s beef production chain. Ken Schmidt, former Harley-Davidson communications director is the morning keynote speaker. The afternoon will feature 21 educational breakouts with emphasis on management, animal health, advertising and marketing, commercial cattle production, ag markets, social media training and low-stress cattle demonstrations.

In response to attendee feedback, there will be a few repeated sessions so there is a better chance of attending all desired sessions.

“We are incredibly proud of the slate of education and entertainment available at the 2015 National Angus Convention,” says Becky Weishaar, Creative Media director and lead contact for the event. “We encourage cattle producers to reserve their place in advance of the early registration deadline of October 2 for only $75 per person.

Hotel reservations are also made on the convention website, and the hotel block features a variety of price points and amenities on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

Registration increases to $125 per person from Oct. 3 to Oct. 16. After that date, advance registration will be closed and participants may register onsite for $150 per person. Delegates elected to represent their state during the Association’s Annual Convention may attend the Association business meetings for free; however, participation in convention education, meals, entertainment and trade show requires a full convention registration.

2015 Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Replacement Female Sale John F. Grimes, OSU Extension Beef Coordinator

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) is announcing an event of potential interest for both the buyers and sellers of beef breeding cattle. On Friday evening, November 27, the OCA will be hosting their third annual Replacement Female Sale. The sale will be held at the Muskingum Livestock facility in Zanesville and will start at 6:00 p.m.

Why is the group sponsoring such a sale? The primary purposes of the Replacement Female Sale are to: 1.

Provide Ohio cow-calf producers with a viable source of quality replacement breeding stock; 2. Encourage beef cattle operations to consider the purchase of replacement breeding stock as a viable alternative to keeping small numbers of replacement females and hopefully reduce management and production difficulties; 3. Offer a marketing option to producers as a membership benefit to OCA members; and 4. Demonstrate that the principles of beef herd female replacement which have been taught in recent years via Ohio State University Extension and the OSU Beef Team are cost effective and viable alternatives for Ohio’s cattlemen.

The 2015 Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Replacement Female Sale will provide an opportunity for both buyers and sellers to meet the need for quality replacements in the state. Consignments may include cow-calf pairs, bred cows and bred heifers. Females must be under the age of five as of January 1, 2016 and may be of registered or commercial background. Bred females must be bred to a bull with known EPD’s and calves at side of cows must be sired by a bull with known EPD’s. Pregnancy status must be verified by an accredited veterinarian through traditional palpation, ultrasound or by blood testing through a professional laboratory. Analysis must be performed within 60 days of sale. Consignments will also be fulfilling specific health requirements.

Last year buyers had the opportunity to appraise 88 lots of bred heifers, bred cows, and fall-calving pairs. The sale included 52 lots of bred heifers that averaged $2,557, 29 lots of bred cows that averaged $2,580, and seven fall-calving pairs which averaged $2,971. The 88 total lots grossed $228,600 for an overall average of $2,598. Prices ranged from $1,200 to $3,700. The females sold to buyers from Ohio and West Virginia. Col. Ron Kreis served as the auctioneer. The current demand for bred replacement females is excellent and expectations are for this trend to continue for the foreseeable future.
