A total of 312 delegates from 39 states and Washington, D.C., represented Association members during the Annual Convention of Delegates hosted Nov. 7 during the 2016 Angus Convention. More than 2,000 Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen attended the three-day event and enjoyed educational sessions, a packed trade show, networking and entertainment. Read more about the American Angus Association’s new leaders below. Newly elected board members Elected to his first three-year term, Richard Dyar has been a life member of the American Angus Association for 42 years. Richard and his family own and operate Dyar Angus Farm near Crossville, Ala., where they calve 60-70 registered-Angus cows annually. Richard joined the American Angus Association staff Nov. 1, 1978, serving as regional manager for 35 years. He proudly served breeders in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. His daughter, Amy, lives on the farm. He has two stepsons, Nic and Tyler, and five grandchildren — Makala, Kohl, Garrett, Kate and Gavin. Dave Hinman of Malta, Mont., was elected to his first term to the American Angus Association Board of Directors. Dave and his wife, Yvonne, purchased their first registered-Angus heifers in 1973, starting Hinman Angus. Soon after, they leased a ranch in Willow Creek, Mont., where they raised two daughters, Jill and Heidi. In 2000, Dave and Yvonne, along with daughter Heidi and son-in-law Billy Lulloff, began leasing to own an 8,000-acre ranch. Five years later, Hinman Angus was recognized with the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) Seedstock Commitment to Excellence Award.

Elected to his first term on the American Angus Association Board of Directors is Alan Miller, a third-generation Angus breeder who grew up on his family farm near Gridley, Ill. Thirty years ago, Alan’s parents, Orlan and Carol Miller, revitalized the Angus herd as a junior project, naming the operation Prairie View Farms (PVF). PVF is now a family operation managed by Alan and his wife, Theresa, with brother-in-law and sister Brandon and Cathy Jones. Alan and Theresa have three children: Amelia, Adam and William, all active in the National Junior Angus Association. Jonathan “JP” Perry, general manager of Deer Valley Farm, Fayetteville, Tenn., was elected to his first term on the American Angus Association Board of Directors. JP was raised on a farming and commercial cow-calf operation in Georgia, and he has spent much of his life working in the purebred business. In 1998, Fred and Rinda Clark of Deer Valley Farm, Fayetteville, Tenn., offered him the opportunity to manage their premier purebred program. JP and his wife, Jackie, have two children: Zach and Alli, who both enjoy the cattle business and showing. Elected to serve a first term on the American Angus Association Board of Directors, Barry Pollard of Waukomis, Okla., is a lifetime Angus member raised in a farming and ranching operation. Barry attended Oklahoma State University (OSU) and is a board-certified neurosurgeon who has performed more than 17,000 surgeries. He currently farms and ranches more than 8,500 acres. Barry also oversees a herd of more than 340 Angus cows and a large recipient herd, raising more than 500 registered-Angus calves annually. Barry’s sons and granddaughter have also been involved in the cattle business. For more news from the Angus Convention, tune in for The Angus Report the week of Nov. 21 on RFD-TV. Industry News & Notes Angus Growth Reflects True Demand By Jena McRell; Angus Media

The nation’s cattle producers are answering the call from consumers for high quality beef, as reflected in recently released figures from the American Angus Association®. Registrations for Angus cattle grew by 4.5% and totaled 334,607 head in fiscal year 2016, which ended Sept. 30. That’s the 15th largest number of registrations in the Association’s 133-year history. Also during fiscal year 2016, Angus breeders increased their sale offerings and participation in performance programs, and the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand achieved a major milestone following more than a decade of consecutive sales records. “2016 was another outstanding year for the American Angus Association and its members,” says Allen Moczygemba, Association CEO. “The past year was a story of growth and unprecedented success for the Angus breed and its leadership position within the beef industry.” The membership organization reports registered Angus bulls averaged $5,605 per head in fiscal year 2016, from Oct. 1, 2015, to Sept. 30, 2016. Sales of registered Angus females reported to the Association averaged $5,036 per head. Angus genetics remained highly valued in spite of almost 10,000 more animals marketed by members vs. the prior year. Average prices in fiscal year 2016 remained 12% higher for registered Angus bulls and nearly 40% higher for registered Angus females than average prices received in 2014, for example. “It’s important to keep the cattle market in perspective, following the record-setting prices of 2015,” Moczygemba says. “Angus cattle sales have remained strong despite market fluctuations. That signals a growing demand for quality genetics, and quality beef, worldwide.” The Association and its four entities experienced outstanding growth across all business metrics, and total assets for the organization reached more than $60 million. Commitment to progress Of the nearly 335,000 calves registered with the Association in fiscal year 2016, more than 53% were produced by artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) calves represented 11% of total registrations. Total females in the MaternalPlus® program are up more than 56% at 37,895 head enrolled in the Association’s inventorybased reporting system designed to capture reproductive trait data. The organization also witnessed an across-the-board increase in weight records submitted in fiscal year 2016, including birth weights, weaning weights and yearling weights. Carcass records are also up 26%, year over year. Performance records and phenotypic data help pave the way for genomic technologies. At Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), genomic profile testing for Angus seedstock increased by 45% in fiscal year 2016, and uptake exceeded 100,000 tests annually for the first time. Cattle that have been genomically tested represent about 33% of total Angus registrations. The team of AGI scientists and researchers are also well positioned for the future. With the addition of AGI Genetic Research Director Stephen Miller and AGI Genetic Services Director Kelli Retallick, the organization now has the most talented education, research and customer service team in the beef genetics business, Moczygemba says. Promoting and growing the breed A for-profit entity of the American Angus Association,

Angus Productions Inc. (API) is home to Angus Media and an extensive offering of communications and marketing capabilities. The company posted strong growth in audience engagement in fiscal year 2016, an indicator of thriving interest in registered Angus animals and pertinent news and information. Digital sale books, produced and hosted by Angus Media, attracted 620,000 users who viewed almost 28 million online pages promoting cattle for sale by Association members — an increase of 65%. Angus Journal® and the Angus Beef Bulletin continue to lead the industry for both quality editorial content and advertising value. The Angus Report celebrated its five-year anniversary on RFD-TV in September 2016 and, during that span, has reached more than 11.5 million viewers nationwide. The 30-minute news program is the only one of its kind to share weekly breed information applicable to the entire beef business. As the nonprofit arm of the American Angus Association, the Angus Foundation generates support for the future of Angus education, youth and research. In fiscal year 2016, the Angus Foundation awarded more than $265,000 in scholarships for Angus youth, and outstanding educational and leadership-based programs were hosted for both adults and junior members. These included sessions for both beginners and advanced producers in Cattlemen’s Boot Camps, the Beef Leaders Institute (BLI), Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD), Raising the Bar and Women Connected conferences. In addition, the nonprofit invested in key research conducted with industry partners on heat tolerance, product tenderness, environmental adaptability and reproductive performance. 1 billion, and counting Perhaps the greatest headline for the Angus breed in fiscal year 2016 is this: Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) surpasses 1 billion lb. of CAB® brand product sold. The world’s largest branded beef program recorded its first 90-million-lb. month in July, only to have sales exceed that mark in both August and September. Fueled by growing demand for quality beef both domestically and abroad, producers responded to growing incentives for raising quality Angus calves sired by registered Angus genetics. Higher acceptance rates allowed graders to certify a record of more than 75,000 carcasses per week, totaling 12.6% higher, or 3.92 million for the year to set an annual CAB acceptance rate of 28.9%. That record is more than double the rate of 10 years ago when it was barely above 14%. “The increase in carcasses qualifying for the brand is a true testament to the value ranchers receive for their Angus-sired calves and the unending commitment of our members toward continuous genetic improvement,” Moczygemba says.

2016 Year in Review

2016 has been a very fun and successful year for OJAA members. We have accomplished many things and have a lot planned for upcoming years. Highlights of our year included: our Annual Meeting, the Ohio Beef Expo, our Spring Membership Meeting, Ohio Angus Preview Show, Ohio State Fair and the 2016 LEAD conference. Our year kicked off in February at our Annual Meeting held with the OAA Banquet. We elected new officers and committee chairmen and set our budget and goals for the year. Our leadership team each created an office or committee notebook to help with our responsibilities. We also started a monthly e-mail check-in with the leadership team. The 2016 Ohio Beef Expo was also an awesome time for our association. We had our first fundraiser of the year, which was helping line up sale cattle for the Angus Sale. McKayla and Ty Raines, Samantha Wallace, Jacob LeBrun, and Marissa Hall all helped line up the sale cattle. There were also many exciting opportunities for the juniors like Showmanship, Beef Quality Assurance, and the Judging Contest. Our Spring Membership Meeting was held April 17, at the OCA office in Marysville, Ohio. We tackled topics like the Ohio Angus Preview Show, upcoming show schedules and started discussing the 2018 Eastern Regional Angus Show that our association will be hosting. This year’s Ohio Angus Preview was held at the Union County Fairgrounds in Marysville, Ohio. We conducted a meeting and discussed many important topics. Our main topic was discussing the upcoming Eastern Regional and National Jr Angus Show. We also had another, very interesting, fundraiser: adult showmanship. Participants were nominated by a small cash donation and could either pay to get out or participate. We had a great time watching the “seasoned” showmen show off their skills. It was a blast for everyone in attendance! Ohio was also well represented this summer at National Jr Angus Association events including the Eastern

Regional in Harrisburg, PA, and the National Jr Angus Show in Grand Island, NE. In addition to showing cattle, we participated in contests, met new friends, and made great memories. The 2016 Ohio State Fair Angus Show was a great success for all of us juniors. We had a quick meeting to vote on our theme for the 2018 Eastern Regional, conducted a basket raffle as a fundraiser and had a fun membership activity. Our raffle was held from Friday to Sunday. There were many baskets donated to our raffle and many different themes were displayed. Our activity was to collect supplies to make a basket for our raffle. Each team started out with a roll of paper towels. We then went around the barn to try and trade items until we found “the best show supply.” After the activity was finished, we put together all the supplies and created a basket. The 2016 LEAD conference was well represented and a success for our association. Lydia Dance, McKayla Raines and Kinsey Crowe all represented Ohio in Phoenix, Arizona. In conclusion 2016 was a very exciting year for the Ohio Junior Angus Association. We have attended events in many different states and hosted many different activities in Ohio. We look forward to the future and we hope to have another awesome year like this year. Our next meeting will be in conjunction with the Ohio Angus Association meeting and banquet that will be held January 28th, 2017 at the Madison County Fairgrounds in London, Ohio. Hope to see everyone there! Jacob LeBrun OJAA News Reporter
