Jerry began artificially inseminating (AIing) alongside his father at the age of 13 and returned to the ranch with his wife, Sharon, after graduating from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1981. They’re joined on the ranch today by son Jed and his wife, Kara. Jerry and Sharon’s other children are Ben, Hannah and Gabriel. David A. Dal Porto was born in Brentwood, Calif.,

where he was raised on his family’s commercial cattle and farming operation. He and his wife, Jeanene, still manage their registered- and commercial-Angus operations near Oakley, Brentwood and other areas of northern California. They have three children, Lindsey, A.J. and Dawson. John Grimes is a second-generation Angus breeder who was raised on his family’s Angus and commercial cow-calf operation, Maplecrest Farms, near Hillsboro, Ohio, where the family remains involved in the farm’s management and operation. He graduated with an animal science degree from the Ohio State University in 1983 and returned home to manage the family farming operation. He and his wife, Joanie, have two daughters: Lindsey and Lauren. James Henderson was born in Kerrville, Texas, as a fourth-generation rancher in the Texas Hill Country. He received a degree in animal science in 1977 from Texas A&M University, and moved to a career in the meatpacking and processing industry. In 2004, James married Mary Lou Bradley, and the couple continues the time-tested traditions of Bradley 3 Ranch. James has two daughters, Hayley and Mary Katherine. Dave Nichols of Bridgewater, Iowa, was raised on his father’s small cattle-feeding operation. Starting as a tenant farmer, Nichols Farms has now grown to 5,500 acres, breeding 1,500 head this spring and maintaining a small feedlot. Nichols Farms oversees the breeding of and marketing of an additional 1,500 cooperator and franchise cows. Nichols Farms’ managing partners are Dave; his wife, Phyllis; and his sister-in-law, Lillian. Industry News & Notes State of the Angus Business

The industry’s largest beef cattle breed surpasses records and continues to lead the marketplace. There’s never been a better time to be in the Angus business, according to the latest data from the American Angus Association®. Despite historically low cow-herd inventories, business has grown for Angus breeders and the memberdriven organization reports growth in nearly every category in fiscal year 2014. From registrations to sales data to cattle qualifying for the Certified Angus Beef® brand, numbers are up and signal positive news for the business breed. “An intentional focus on quality has become apparent in the cattle market this year,” says Bryce Schumann, Association chief executive officer. “Whether it’s cattlemen looking to rebuild herds or a consumer purchasing beef for their dinner table, quality reigns supreme, and the Angus breed delivers on that expectation.” Angus seedstock sales reported to the Association from Oct. 1, 2013, to Sept. 30, 2014, show the breed exceeded $326 million in sales – a first in Association history. Collectively, Angus breeders across the country earned $61.5 million more than the prior fiscal year – a 23% increase in total dollars spent on registered Angus seedstock. During the past year, the average registered Angus sale generated twice as much income as it did in 2010, or nearly $250,000 more than it did four years ago. That’s added revenue that goes back to rural communities and families across the nation, Schumann says. The Association also reports a positive bottom-line throughout the organization and its entities, with total assets of nearly $47 million. “Adopting new technology and attention to continuously improving selection decisions have driven the value for Angus during the past year,” Schumann says. “That was extremely evident in our bull sale averages – we are selling more bulls at higher prices, sustaining increased demand for registered Angus bulls.” Registered Angus bulls averaged a record $4,997 in fiscal year 2014. Angus females witnessed market growth as well, averaging $3,614. The Association also saw a rise in overall Angus cattle registrations, increasing the registry by 298,369 animals. That’s up more than 9,500 head from cattle registered the year prior. Proof that more Angus breeders are incorporating technology into their herds is that more than 53% of calves recorded in fiscal year 2014 were produced by artificial insemination (AI), the second-largest figure ever for the Association; and 10% of registrations were calves produced via embryo transfer. With each new registration, the Association’s database gains momentum. In fiscal year 2014, the industry-leading performance database grew by more than 17,000 weaning weights from 700 additional herds. Carcass records reported to the Association also increased by 165% – pointing toward member interest in one of the breed’s most economically important traits. Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB), the Associationowned branded beef program, sold more than 880 million

pounds of Certified Angus Beef® brand product for the eighth consecutive year of record sales. That represents a 15-million pound increase over the previous year, driven by an increase in CAB acceptance rates. Fiscal year 2014 saw a 400,000-head decline in the number of Angus-influenced cattle available at the brand’s 30 licensed packing plants across North America. But a greater share of those featured Angus influence and a record proportion met the 10 CAB carcass specifications, resulting in a net gain of more than 80,000 additional cattle accepted. In addition, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) reports the number of registered Angus cattle tested for genomicenhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) increased 32% in fiscal year 2014. Genomic data enhances the Association’s database and weekly National Cattle Evaluation (NCE), allowing producers to optimize their selection decisions across 18 traits and seven dollar-value indices. Angus seedstock breeders are not the only ones jumping on board with genomics. During the past year, the number of GeneMax® tests for commercial heifer selection increased by 36%. “We remain focused on the technologies that provide a higher quality product for the consumer. That is the fuel to our success,” Schumann says. “If we can get more pounds of high quality CAB product sold, those benefits cycle right back to our members and commercial partners who invest in registered Angus genetics.” The breed’s ability to market and engage its membership and the entire cattle industry also made great strides in fiscal year 2014. The newly aligned Angus Productions Inc. (API), which unified all of the Association’s communications platforms, including print, radio, TV and digital, saw an increase in audience engagement. Angus Journal celebrated its 35th anniversary, and remains the flagship communications vehicle for the Association with more breeder advertising and timely news and information than any publication in the industry. API’s weekly TV show, The Angus Report, set records for ratings, according to Nielsen – nearly tripling its per-viewing audience since the program launched on RFD-TV in 2011. The first-ever Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show, held Nov. 4-6 in Kansas City, will welcome thousands of cattlemen to a comprehensive event featuring top-notch speakers and entertainment, jam-packed educational seminars, a trade show featuring 100-plus allied industry partners, and much more. The people who comprise the Angus community also remain dedicated to growing its future. More than $254,000 was awarded to Angus youth in scholarships through the Angus Foundation, and the Association’s non-profit organization reported increasing revenues in fiscal year 2014 toward its initiatives in youth, education and research to advance the breed. “Together, we achieved much success in the last 12 months,” Schumann says. “I’m proud to be a part of this great breed and proud of the commitment shown by our members and the staff of the Association and each of its entities. This organization and this breed are made up of some of the best, hardest-working people in this business — and it shows in the many well-deserved successes achieved this year.”

Industry News & Notes Apply now for beef scholarships

CAB’s Colvin Fund offers $26,000 to six qualifying students

The Colvin Scholarship Fund has grown to award higher cash amounts to deserving students. Offered by the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand, the annual awards recognize Louis M. “Mick” Colvin’s dedication to making dreams a reality and inspiring others to be their best. After Colvin retired as executive director in 1999, the brand established the scholarship fund to carry on his legacy and passion for the future of the beef industry. For 2015, $20,000 will be split among five undergraduate awards in the amounts of $6,000, $5,000, $4,000, $3,000 and $2,000. College juniors and seniors who have shown a commitment to the beef industry through coursework and industry-related activities are encouraged to submit an application before the Dec. 8, 2014, deadline. These will be evaluated on activities, scholastic achievement, communication skills and reference letters. A $6,000 graduate-level scholarship will also be awarded to a full-time masters or doctoral student conducting applied research related to high-quality beef production. The deadline for that application is Jan. 12, 2015. Each of the six awards are $1,000 higher for the coming year, to keep pace with rising education costs, and thanks to the generosity of partners in the program. As funds for the scholarship have continued to grow, so have the level

of applicants. “I can’t say enough good things about the quality of past winners,” says Colvin, who co-founded CAB in 1978 and served as chief officer for 22 years. “These scholarship winners go back into the beef industry and really add value long-term.” The top undergraduate and graduate scholarship recipients will receive an all-expense paid trip to the 2015 CAB Annual Conference, Sept. 24 -26, 2015, in San Antonio, Texas. The graduate winner will present their research project on some aspect of high-quality beef production and meat science. “At the graduate level, the presentations are excellent,” Colvin says. “We’re looking for a candidate who is going to be the next industry leader and have a big impact on beef production. The quality of their presentations is really good and benefits the industry.” Scholarship winners will be announced in February 2015 for those applicants demonstrating a commitment to the beef industry through the pursuit of a meat science, food science, animal science, marketing, business, communications, journalism or other degree related to the beef industry. The Certified Angus Beef ® brand is the world’s leading brand of fresh beef, whose 17,000 partners worldwide sell more than 880 million pounds annually. The scholarships benefit tomorrow’s leaders who are involved in their communities and the beef industry. For more details, interested students should visit www.certifiedangusbeef.com/press/colvin/.

Industry News & Notes Miss American Angus Crowned in Kansas City

The Angus Report’ Doubles Airings Each Week

Madison Butler, Vincennes, Ind., chosen to represent the Angus breed in 2015

Viewers now have more opportunities to watch the popular news program

Best recognized in her red jacket and sparkling tiara, Miss American Angus is a true spokeswoman for Angus cattle and the American Angus Association®. Each year, five outstanding young ladies compete for the prestigious title and the opportunity to serve a year-long term as a breed ambassador. Madison Butler, Vincennes, Ind., was crowned as the 2015 Miss American Angus during the Association’s Awards Recognition Breakfast held Nov. 7 as part of the first-ever Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show in Kansas City. Butler is a freshman at Hutchison Community College in Hutchison, Kan., where she is studying food science. She is the daughter of Rob and Casey Butler. “Being Miss American Angus is something that has always been a huge goal of mine while growing up in this industry, because she really is an ambassador and a role model for our breed,” Butler says. “Not only for the younger girls in our association, but really everyone. She’s someone they can look to, and she’s knowledgeable about our industry.” Motivated by the opportunity to connect with consumers and share her knowledge of food science, Butler says it is important to share agriculture’s message with the general public. She’s been an active member of the National Junior Angus Association and the Indiana Junior Angus Association, serving as chair of the 2014 National Junior Angus Show in Indianapolis, Ind. Hosted by the American Angus Auxiliary, the Miss American Angus program provides one Angus junior the opportunity to serve the breed and assist with shows, educational events and field days to educate others about the beef industry and benefits of Angus genetics. “Miss American Angus is a huge asset to the American Angus Auxiliary, because she is another extension of us as an ambassador for the breed,” says Lynne Hinrichsen, Auxiliary president. “She represents the American Angus Association, as well as the entire membership and the breed. Her job is to promote Angus cattle and the beef industry through education for children, adults and all beef consumers.” The five young women vying for the crown were selected through the Auxiliary scholarship contest, and completed a written test, delivered a prepared speech, completed an interview and answered impromptu questions from a panel of judges. Competing with Butler this year were Michaela Clowser, Milford, Neb.; Katie Friederichs, Walcott, Iowa; Catie Hope, Berryville, Va.; and Destiny McCauley, Bowling Green, Fla. Serving as judges for the contest were: Dr. Jason Nickell, Parkville, Mo.; Lacy Short, Masonville, Iowa; and Maggie Tennant, Greensboro, N.C. Butler succeeds 2014 Miss American Angus Catherine Harward, Richfield, N.C. For more news from the Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show, visit www. angusconvention.com. Also plan to tune to The Angus Report at 7:30 a.m. CDT Monday, Nov. 17 for full coverage on RFD-TV.

If you enjoy Angus TV programming, there’s good news coming next month: Beginning Nov. 1, the American Angus Association®’s popular news program, The Angus Report, will increase its airings from two to four times per week on RFD-TV. Since its launch three years ago, the program has been broadcast on Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. and Saturday afternoons at 1:30 p.m., in the Central time zone. Now, the program will air additionally on Wednesday evenings at 5 p.m. CDT and Thursday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. CDT. “Having the program air four times a week instead of two dramatically increases our ability to communicate timely news and information about the Angus business to cattle producers across the country,” says Eric Grant, president and general manager of Angus Productions Inc. (API) “It’s also good news for Angus breeders and allied industry who advertise on our program. The broader exposure expands the frequency of their advertising – and gives them more exposure among a growing audience.” The decision will also make it easier for viewers in all times zones to tune in and watch the program. “Viewers from the East coast to the West coast will have more opportunities to tune in and enjoy the program at a time that’s convenient for their own work and personal schedules,” Grant says. The Angus Report began airing on RFD-TV in 2011, and since that time the program has watched its viewership nearly triple, according to Nielsen, ranking it now among RFDTV’s most-watched agribusiness programs. The program also enjoys a robust online audience, with all segments posted to angus.org and other popular websites each week. RFD-TV also announced that it had reached a distribution agreement with AT&T U-Verse, which increases the network’s reach to 47-plus million households nationwide. “We’re really grateful to RFD-TV for their commitment to expanding farm and ranch-focused TV programming to more viewers across the country,” Grant says. “RFD-TV founder Patrick Gottsch and his team have reshaped the way organizations like ours and many others reach our audience, and communicate information that makes producers more competitive and economically sustainable.” In addition to The Angus Report, the American Angus Association and API also produce a weekly 30-minute radio show, Angus Talk, that airs every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CDT on Rural Radio Channel 80 on Sirius XM Radio; and an ongoing documentary series, I Am Angus, which is slated to air in the next couple of months on Thanksgiving evening, Christmas night and on the evening of Jan. 5, 2015, on RFD-TV. RFD-TV is distributed by more than 625 cable operations, and can be found on DirecTV channel 345 and Dish Network channel 231. Check local listings for more information.
