Ohio Angus Breeders, I’m sure like many of you I’m starting to wonder if this cooler weather will ever give up! The warmer and drier weather in March had me thinking it would be an early spring. However April has been unusually damp and cool, delaying planting and spring turnout for many. But the forecast is looking more favorable. I hope you all are having a safe spring in the fields and are getting ready for hay season just around the bend. Despite the softer fat cattle and feeder cattle prices the demand for Angus genetics held strong through the spring. With most all of the spring Angus sales in Ohio and surrounding states seeing steady averages and grosses compared to recent years. I anticipate the demand for Angus based cows to hold through the fall. If you are interested in marketing females privately or through a fall consignment sale, give me a call to see how Ohio Angus can help you. Just around the corner will be the Ohio Angus Preview Show. The show will be held on June 10-12th at the Union Co. Fairgrounds. More details are included on the front page as well on the website at www.ohioangus. org. This summer there will be many fun activities and events for junior Angus members. This includes shows like the National Jr Angus Show, Ohio Angus Preview, Eastern Regionals, Ohio State Fair, and American Angus Breeder’s Futurity and events like the LEAD conference for older juniors. These shows and events have upcoming deadlines, juniors need to make sure they take notice so no one misses an event! For the National Jr Angus Show, May 15th is the ownership and entry deadline to show and is also the deadline for the Creative Writing, Photography and Graphic Design contests. May 25th is the deadline for the Public Speaking outlines and the Career Development Contest. It will be held July 3¬-9 in Grand Island, Nebraska at the Nebraska State Fair. June 1st is the deadline for t-shirt size submissions to Shows Committee Chair McKayla Raines for the NJAS. For the Ohio Angus Preview, the ownership and entry deadline is May 20th. There has been a slight schedule change for the show. You can either check in on Friday evening or you can come up on Saturday morning. The preview show will be held on June 10-¬12 at the Union County Fairgrounds in Marysville, Ohio. The Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show will be held on June 17¬-19 in Harrisburg, PA at the PA Farm Show Complex. Many of our members are planning to go to PA this year. Juniors have the option to participate in the skillathon which will be held the 18th from 10 am to 2pm. For The Ohio State Fair, the ownership and entry deadline is June 20th. The Angus will be on the Ohio State Fairgrounds during the first session which is July 26th¬-28th. The 2016 LEAD conference is going to be held on August 6-9 in Phoenix, Arizona for Juniors 14 years and older. The deadline for registration is June 15th. Ohio’s own Lauren Grimes, NJAA Leadership Director, is planning this year’s conference and she says it will be an event you don’t want to miss! So as you can see, we Angus juniors have many fun and exciting shows approaching us. There are many deadlines for these shows. We hope to see everyone this coming summer, it is going to be really fun! Jacob LeBrun OJAA Reporter Juniors – be sure to attend this year’s Ohio Preview Show in Marysville. The schedule will be a little different than in year’s past. Check-in for the junior show will be Friday afternoon as well as Saturday morning. We will begin the Junior Show at noon on Saturday with Dr. Aaron Arnett from Galena, Ohio judging our showmanship classes first. We will be having our junior meeting on Friday evening at 7 p.m. This is an important meeting to attend to get all the details on the show for the next day as well as plan for our trips to Pennsylvania for the Eastern Regional and Nebraska for the National Jr Angus Show. OJAANews & Notes (cont’d) The preview show is going to have some fun action from the juniors this year. One activity will be a member auction. The member auction will take place on Saturday night at dinner. The member will be sold for one hour of service. The farm or family that buys the member can use them for fitting, washing cattle, preparing stalls or tie outs. The other event that will take place is adult showmanship. This was done last year and was very successful and fun. Members/Individuals will pay $10 to put an adult in the showmanship class. The only way the adult can get out of the class is to pay $20. After the adult pays to get out the member can pay $10 to put them back in. The adult must pay $20 to get out again. Hope to see you at The Preview Show this year.

Managing the Spring Flush
Chris Penrose, OSU Extension Educator, Morgan County For most of us, forage growth is here and we are in the spring “flush” of growth. For pasture and hay fields that are primarily grass based, we may get up to 70% of our growth in the next month or so. One reason we have so much growth now is that we generally have ideal growing conditions and our forages are in the reproductive stage of growth. The priority for our perennial grasses and legumes in this stage of growth are to make seed heads. For most of our grasses, this month will likely be the only time seed heads are made. As forage managers, we have two tasks to improve our grazing during this time of the year. First, if we can remove the seed heads, the forages will move from the reproductive stage into the vegetative stage. This will stimulate new leaf growth and encourage the plants to start storing energy in the roots to help them through the summer stress and into the winter. A mature plant with a seed head on it will not grow as well and be of lower quality from being mature and having lower feed quality stems. How do we remove seed heads? There are two options: have the animals remove them or cut them. Unfortunately, many grasses set seed all at once and that becomes a challenge for livestock to graze off. If the plant is starting to develop the stem that has the seed head in it, livestock may graze the tender seed head within the young stem. Some animals like goats may enjoy grazing the seed heads, but cattle may not graze the stems and seed heads in favor of the leaves at the base of the plant. Forcing animals to graze mature forages can adversely affect animal performance. If pastures get too mature, a good alternative is to simply clip them after seed heads have emerged. Another option if forages are growing too fast may be to not graze the field now and remove the crop for hay. What is the other way to improve our grazing this time of the year? Try to stretch out this flush of growth. If your pastures are healthy enough after last year’s drought and growing well, you can do a rapid grazing through the paddocks and slow down slightly the rapid growth. Another option may be to set stock (giving the animals the run of some to all of the paddocks). Then as the rapid growth slows, initiate a rotation, possibly leaving some paddocks for hay removal if you anticipate excess pasture but need hay. It is likely too late this year, but in future years if you are
short on pasture and have available hay fields, a light grazing over some of those fields, especially predominantly grass fields may be an option. I have grazed grass hay fields for over twenty years early in the spring and as long as I get livestock out prior to stem elongation, I still get a decent hay crop. Another advantage to this is the hay will likely mature a little later providing a better quality hay crop. If you do this, do not overgraze, and if cattle are grazing on the hay fields, avoid keeping on too long during wet weather to avoid “pugging” of the field. A third option, which is more long term, would be to use different cultivars of the same species in in different paddocks as you reseed fields. As you can see in the picture of orchard grass, different cultivars can have different maturity dates which can stretch out the flush of new growth. In addition, new and improved varieties have improved quality, persistence, and insect and disease resistance. If you are considering a new planting, I highly recommend purchasing the best seed available. The additional cost is minimal when you consider the total cost of the seeding and how many years the forage should be in a stand. This will allow different maturing dates and lengthen the spring flush of new growth. Each of us is in a different situation. Some may be very short on hay ground and have plenty of pasture, some may be just the opposite. One of the most important aspects of Managed intensive Grazing is to be flexible and try to anticipate what the forage needs and availability will be over the course of the season. Hopefully a few of these options will allow you to have a more successful grazing season.
