Ohio Angus Breeders, Summer is officially in full swing. I hope that everyone has been able to catch enough of passing rain showers. The month of June seemed very hit or miss depending on where you live. The Ohio Angus Preview was held on June 11 & 12 in Marysville, OH. The show was a huge success with app. 68 head participating in the 2 day show. I want to Thank the West Central Angus Association, for hosting the show and for sponsoring the dinner on Saturday night. The National Junior Angus Show was held last week, July 3-9 in Grand Island, NE. Results on how the Ohio Angus Juniors fared will be included in next months issue. Before you know it the Ohio State Fair will be here as well. The Angus shows are Scheduled for July 27 & 28. I encourage everyone to take a day, attend the many attractions the state fair has to offer and take in a great Angus show. More details and complete schedule for the State Fair Angus show can be found on page 16. The cattle market has held consistent through the spring, after the slight downturn last fall. This however didn’t affect demand much for quality Angus genetics. With most all of the spring Angus sales in Ohio and surrounding states seeing strong averages and grosses compared to recent years. I anticipate the demand for Angus based cows to hold through the fall. If you are interested in marketing females privately or through a fall consignment sale, give me a call to see how Ohio Angus can help you.

Industry News & Notes Beef Leaders Institute Grants New Vision All-encompassing tour gives Angus members insight into farm-to-fork beef production. — Written by JD Rosman, Angus Media

Twenty American Angus Association members recently traveled five days across the country for an in-depth industry tour through the Beef Leaders Institute (BLI). Looking to further their knowledge and education, the cattlemen and women experienced a whirlwind week developing relationships and exploring all aspects of beef production, from the feedlot to the consumer. The Angus Foundation-sponsored event was hosted June 20-24 and started at the Association’s headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. “BLI gives Angus producers an inside look at all aspects of the beef industry,” says Chelsey Smith, Association assistant director of events and education. “We connect producers with feeders, packers, processors, retailers and experts in the fields of genetics, reproduction and industry, so they leave the program with knowledge and information to better their operations.” The mission behind BLI is to provide young producers, between the ages of 25 and 45, the opportunity to network with their peers in the Angus breed, while learning more about their organization and the entire beef business. Participants were selected through an application process and represent bright leaders within the Angus breed. “Events like this are truly priceless,” says Lindsey Grimes, Saint Joseph, Mo. “They bring everything back into perspective; you learn what is truly important, and you get a refresher on everything from the seedstock side to the packer. It makes you recognize and understand the big picture.” Throughout the ninth-annual BLI, the group toured throughout the Midwest and ended in Wooster, Ohio, at Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) headquarters. Along the way, participants were able to visit GeneSeek Neogen Operations in Lincoln, Neb.; J’s Steakhouse in Fremont, Neb.; Weborg Feeding Co. in Pender, Neb.; Trans Ova in Sioux City, Iowa; a Tyson beef processing facility in Dakota City, Neb.; Sysco in Cleveland, Ohio; and a retail tour at Buehler’s Milltown in Wooster, Ohio. Participants were able to experience all areas of the beef business, interact with production experts and develop a larger vision to improve their operations back home. “You should never be done learning,” says Justin Uhrig, Hermosa, S.D. “As a producer, it is mind-boggling to see how much CAB and the Association have advanced our breed. The dedication they have has created opportunity and advancements for the Angus breed as a whole, and it’s an opportunity that

continues to grow.” Additionally, Grimes said having the opportunity to tour facilities like Trans Ova and CAB was incredible because it shows what her family’s operation aims to produce. “It makes me a better breeder,” Grimes said. “As producers, we need to keep in mind what will make our customers money, and, ultimately, what will provide the consumer a safe and wholesome product.” A complete list of 2016 BLI participants follows. For more information on how to participate in the leadership event, visit www.angus.org. Applications for the 2017 class will be available online starting next winter. Industry News & Notes $Value Changes Due to Market Trends Recent cattle market declines will shift dollar value indexes ($Values) slightly lower July 1 when the American Angus Association® and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) release the National Cattle Evaluation. This is the first time since $Values were introduced that the annual update of economic assumptions has resulted in a decline for the bioeconomic selection indexes. $Values incorporate expected progeny differences (EPDs) for multiple traits as well as economic market factors like calf prices and feed costs, and are based on three-year rolling averages to more accurately reflect beef industry trends. Beef value ($B) will lower about $6 on average; weaned calf value ($W) will decline an average of $2. While not all animals will shift by the same amount, percentile rankings should remain relatively similar. It’s important to remember that lower $Values from the July update are vastly due to cattle market conditions, rather than declines in genetic merit or breed trends. In fact, genetic trend lines show healthy progress for the breed. Association members and their commercial customers can learn more using the following resources at: http://www.angus. org/Pub/Newsroom/Releases/dollar-value-page.aspx

Lydia Dance Earns Junior Bronze and Silver Awards Lydia Dance, Hillsboro, Ohio, has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Clark, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. The 16-year-old daughter of Henry and Barbara Dance attends Hillsboro High School and Southern State Community College and is a member of the NJAA and the Ohio Junior Angus Association where she has served as treasurer. She has participated in local, state and regional shows. In 2014 Lydia participated in the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development conference. She also received several awards for her involvement with her local 4-H club and FFA chapter. The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

Angus remembers former editor and publisher for contributions to the beef business. The American Angus Association® and Angus Journal® pay tribute to Dale Runnion, Longmont, Colo., a veteran livestock editor and publisher who passed away June 11. Runnion was 98 years old, and over the course of his career was an impactful voice for America’s cattle farmers and ranchers. Raised on an Ohio general livestock farm, Runnion was a graduate of Ohio State University, and had broad cattle business and beef publication experience. He had been a livestock buyer for the Kroger Packing Co. and served in the Army in World War II, leaving with the rank of Major. Runnion began his career in livestock journalism in 1949 as field representative for the Chicago Drovers Journal. In 1952, he moved to the Aberdeen Angus Journal, where he rose from field man to advertising manager to managing editor. He presided over the publication during the biggest growth period in Angus history. Runnion was inducted into the prestigious Saddle and Sirloin Club in 1988, and his portrait is among the world’s largest collection of individual portraits devoted to a single industry. He was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Van Wert County, Ohio, to Lester and Velma Runnion. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, June; four children, two stepchildren, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Private services for the family will take place June 18 in Longmont, Colo., where Dale was a member of LifeBridge Christian Church. A full obituary is available online, including memorial donations and information.
