I hope everyone has been surviving Ohio’s extreme winter temperatures, and will have enough hay to make it till spring grass arrives. None the less spring is just around the corner, and that means Spring Sale Season! Headlining Spring Angus Sales will be the Angus Super Star Sale at the Ohio Beef Expo. We have compiled a solid offering from many of Ohio’s top breeders as well as several new consignors from out of state. This will surely be a tremendous sale and I encourage everyone to attend. We had a very successful Annual Meeting & Banquet on January 31st. Complete results of the events can be found on pages 5 & 8. Headlining the event was the record setting Handbook auction the raised $15,875 on the selling of 30 premier pages. Thank you to everyone that attended the banquet and purchased a premier page. The directory is on schedule to be distributed at the Ohio Beef Expo. However, we still have advertising pages available. Finally, the Eastern Ohio Angus Association will be hosting their Spring Sale on Saturday April 11th, at Muskingum Livestock in Zanesville, OH. They are now accepting consignments. 2015 Ohio Angus Annual Awards Banquet The Ohio Angus Association held it’s Annual Meeting and 2014 Awards Banquet on January 31st at SpringfieldClark Career Tech Center, Springfield, OH . Over 100 attendees enjoyed a sirloin tips and ham dinner, shared in fellowship, planning, and awards presentations. Election of Officers was also held with Tim Harsh, Radnor elected as President, Joe Sanders, Harrod, OH elected as Vice President, Allen Gahler, Graytown was elected as Treasurer and Dan Wells, Chillicothe will continue serving as Secretary The new board members and officers of the Association, the Jr. Association, and the Ladies Auxiliary were introduced, and as always, the evening concluded with the auctioning of the page choices in the 2015 directory. New Board members were elected and include: Dave Felumlee, Newark; Fred Penick, Hebron; Paul Hill, Bidwell; Henry Bergfeld, Summitville were elected to 2 Yr. terms. With 4 regional associations having vacancies the by-laws call for at large positions to be elected for one year terms, so the total number of directors should be kept at a minimum of 18. John Grimes, Hillsboro; Derek Bankey, Custar; Keith Kaufman, Danville; Keith Burgett, Carrollton were elected to serve were elected to serve 1 Yr. terms. Special guest Todd Pugh conducted the Directory Page Auction that grossed $15,875 on 29 premier pages. The high selling pages were the back cover going to Way View Cattle Co., Hebron, OH for $1000 and Page 1 to Champion Hill, Bidwell for $1,000. Industry News & Notes Command Your Angus Future Apply for the 2015 Beef Leaders Institute by March 2. Many have enjoyed success in the Angus business, especially in the last few years. Yet many may also feel a greater need to guide their operations and help lead others into a well-planned future that encompasses the entire beef supply chain. That’s why the American Angus Association® created Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) for its 25- to 45-year-old members eight years ago. Participants at the June 22-26 BLI will not only gain a great understanding of how to use Association resources, but also strengthen their leadership and planning skills to help ensure future success. “This is an impactful way to bring Angus breeders together to learn about their larger role in the beef cattle industry,” says Jaclyn Upperman, Association director of events and education. “We hope they leave the conference with a better understanding of how quality genetics improve the marketplace.” The program is designed to make that happen, bringing Angus producers together in Saint Joseph, Mo., for informative sessions, followed by a three-day tour across several industry segments. That includes more than a day in the Wooster, Ohio, area with the Certified Angus Beef® brand for some hands-on learning about how the member-owned brand adds value to Angus cattle. Along the way, BLI participants will tour a feedlot, beef harvesting and packing facility, fabricator, retailer and other industry segments, starting with and pertaining to the American Angus Association. Scores of Angus producers have found great value in the experience since 2008, which is funded in part by the Angus Foundation made possible with help from their generous supporters.
Dale Vitt, Fairview, Mont., who participated last year, says BLI stands out for the educational opportunity “to see other segments of the industry we don’t normally get to see.” He says one result is a fact-based assurance for customers that “the beef industry does put out a safe product, and I can be a better advocate.” The Association provides transportation, lodging, meals and materials during BLI. Attendees will be responsible for round-trip transportation between their home and either Kansas City or Saint Joseph, Mo.
Scholarships Available to Angus Youth
May 1 deadline for Angus Foundation and American Angus Auxiliary application. The American Angus Association® strives to provide students with opportunities to benefit themselves and the future of the cattle business. Through scholarship programs hosted by the Angus Foundation and the American Angus Auxiliary, Angus youth passionate about the beef industry are provided financial support to further their education. Current high school seniors and college students should take note of the deadlines and details for each scholarship program listed below. The Angus Foundation offers general scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in higher education. Eligible Angus youth meeting the qualifications for the Angus Foundation’s 2015 Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship Programs will be considered by the Angus Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee. As in past years, other specific and special criteria scholarships administered by the Angus Foundation will also be available. Scholarship recipients will be recognized during the 2015 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Tulsa, Okla. The Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship, also through the Angus Foundation, will provide $1,000 to three students who use Angus genetics in their seedstock or commercial operation. Applicants must be enrolled in a junior college, four-year college/ university or other accredited institution for fall 2015. They can be an entering freshman or a continuing student in any undergraduate program. Applicant or the applicant’s parents/guardians must have transferred or been transferred a registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2012). Applications for all Angus Foundation scholarships must be postmarked by May 1, and mailed to Milford Jenkins, American Angus Association, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506. Industry News & Notes 4 tips for bull buying during the ‘good times’
Considerations for buying a bull during cattle markets’ high tide With record highs in the cattle market, genetic decisions have never been more important, says South Dakota State University Extension Cow/ Calf Field Specialist Warren Rusche, and most beef can probably agree with that. But because of the “good time” cattle markets, the amount of capital at risk and the dollars at stake with every decision have never been higher. So how does that change the bull buying decisions of producers? Although the basics haven’t changed, Rusche offers four bull-buying factors that are worth some additional consideration. 1. Longevity. One way to reduce the cost per calf of higher-valued bulls is to increase their productive life, Rusche notes. He advises producers to buy bulls that have been developed to last, and take care of them with an attitude of longevity. Looking at the chart below, a producer would be easily tempted to lower their standards, Rusche notes. “Buying the wrong bull for an operation just because he is cheaper will be more costly than spending ‘too much,’” he writes. 3. Accuracy of selection. As the cost of breeding assets increase, the costs of making mistakes go up as well. Any tool that helps producers more accurately identify the bulls that meet their goals will reduce that risk. Rusche recommends using genomic-enhanced EPDs, which combine the power of DNA testing tools like
the 50K test with traditional performance testing, to improve genetic selection and increase the accuracy of EPDs. 4. Reproduction. In today’s market, it’s nearly impossible for a cow to lose money, provided that she’s pregnant and weans a calf, Rusche says. He suggests a few musts for keeping a bull in top reproductive shape: breeding soundness exams, managing bull condition, and reducing environmental stress. “Having extra bull power as an insurance against injury may be worth considering as well,” he notes. (AGI) will host our first-ever International Genomics Symposium as part of the 2015 Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show. The event takes place Nov. 3 in Overland Park, Kan., and will provide cattle producers with cutting-edge information about advancements in genomics technology – and how these advances impact their businesses.
