Ohio Angus Breeders, I hope everyone has been surviving another unique Ohio winter and will have enough hay to make it till spring grass arrives. The warmer then normal temperatures have been tollerable however, I know I’m growing tired or MUD! None the less spring is just around the corner, and that means Spring Sale Season! Headlining Spring Angus Sales will be the Angus Super Star Sale at the Ohio Beef Expo. We have compiled a solid offering from many of Ohio’s top breeders as well as several new consignors from out of state. This will surely be a tremendous sale and I encourage everyone to attend. We had a very successful Annual Meeting & Banquet on January 28th. Complete results of the events can be found on pages 5 & 6. Headlining the event was the record setting Handbook auction the raised $12,750 on the selling of 23 premier pages. Thank you to everyone that attended the banquet and purchased a premier page. The directory is on schedule to be distributed at the Ohio Beef Expo. However, we still have advertising pages available. If you would like to reserve a page, contact me asap to do so and discuss details of your ad. Finally, the Eastern Ohio Angus Association will be hosting their Spring Sale on Saturday April 8th, at Muskingum Livestock in Zanesville, OH. They are now accepting consignments. 2017 Ohio Angus Annual Awards Banquet The Ohio Angus Association held it’s Annual Meeting and 2016 Awards Banquet on January 28th at Madison Co. Fairgrounds, London, OH . Over 100 attendees enjoyed a beef tenderloin meal, shared in fellowship, planning, and awards presentations. Election of Officers was also held with Joe Sanders, Harrod elected as President, Todd Raines, Seaman elected as Vice President, Allen Gahler, Graytown was elected as Treasurer and Dan Wells, Frankfort will continue serving as Secretary The new board members and officers of the Association, the Jr. Association, and the Ladies Auxiliary were introduced, and as always, the evening concluded with the auctioning of the page choices in the 2017 directory. New Board members were elected and include: Kelvin Egner, Shelby; Fred Penick, Hebron; Keith Kaufman, Danville and Dave Felumlee, Newark were elected to 2 Yr. terms. With 4 regional associations having vacancies and one year remaining on term left open by election of Todd Raines to V.P. the by-laws call for at large positions to be elected for one year terms, so the total number of directors should be kept at a minimum of 18. Wes Untied, Granville; Keith Burgett, Carrollton; Jim Rentz, Coldwater; Henry Bergfeld, Summitville and Sandra Wallace, Kansas were elected to serve 1 Yr. terms. Special guest Ryan LePage conducted the Directory Page Auction that grossed $12,750 on 23 premier pages. The high selling page was Back Cover going to Claylick Run, Newark for $1,000. NJAA Provides Opportunities
The National Junior Angus Association presently has more than 7,000 active junior members from all over the United States and Canada. The purpose of the NJAA has expanded through the years to include more projects and programs that help juniors develop their skills and character. The opportunities provided by the National Junior Angus Association, is establishing a strong foundation for the expansion and improvement of the Angus breed. Shows, awards, contest, education, conferences, leadership, scholarship and internship are opportunities provided by the nation’s leading junior beef breed organization. Through these projects and programs NJAA is developing tomorrows Angus farmers, ranchers, and leaders. A great resource to all Angus enthusiasts are the websites maintained by the American Angus Association and its affiliate organizations. The websites provide valuable and current information on the programs and activities sponsored by the American Angus Association , www.angus. org, the National Junior Angus Association, www.njaa.info, Angus Productions Inc., www.angusjournal.com, the Angus Foundation, www.angusfoundation.org, and Certified Angus Beef LLC, www.certifiedangusbeef.com. The first step for young Angus enthusiasts, who are interested in opportunities and programs sponsored by the American Angus Association, is to become a member. Committee chairman are in the process of finalizing their budgets now and the planning committee will have an overall budget finished in early 2017. Fundraising efforts are also underway for this event. Upcoming activities include: a Silent Auction at the OAA Annual Banquet and a Semen Sale at the 2017 Ohio Beef Expo during the Angus Sale. Committee members are currently accepting donations for each event. Additional sponsorship opportunities are in the works and the show’s sponsorship levels will be available in early 2017. So in conclusion, OJAA has been working hard to prepare to host the 2018 Eastern Regionals. Industry News & Notes National Western Angus Bull Sale a ‘Smash Hit’

All-new evening event attracts nearly 2,500 to celebrate Angus in the West.
The national anthem echoed through the historic Stadium Arena during the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) as the crowd stood at attention and cowboy hats were drawn in tight. Rows of Angus breeders, commercial producers and stock show attendees filled every corner at the official start of the National Western Angus Bull Sale. The all-new evening event, hosted Jan. 11 by the American Angus Association, was a celebration of the breed’s impact on Western ranching and a look to the future for quality genetics and beef production. Sponsored by Merial, the event combined the Association’s annual bull sale with an Angus Foundation fundraiser. “The new format for the National Western Angus Bull Sale is another step forward for the breed, for the Association, and it is something we are all very proud of,” said Allen Moczygemba, American Angus Association CEO. “We want to celebrate our heritage and the expansion of Angus, yet look to our future and what is possible. Through events like this, our Association continues to grow in relevance and to connect with our ultimate customer, commercial cattlemen.” The only sale managed by the membership organization, the National Western Angus Bull Sale is a longstanding tradition during the NWSS each January. Angus breeders from across the country travel to Denver to showcase their best genetics, and commercial producers shop for their next great herd sire. The Association was proud to offer the new venue in Stadium Arena, and the event was referenced as the largest cattle sale in the arena in recent memory, with nearly 2,500 people reported by the NWSS. “It is a great pleasure for Merial to be the headline sponsor of this first-ever event with the American Angus Association and the Angus Foundation,” said Richard Jenkins, Merial head of national accounts. “What excites me so much about it, and why Merial is involved, is the opportunity to promote the best that the beef breed has to offer.” Cattle producers of all types were invited to attend the evening’s activities, which also included live entertainment by Texas country band Jake Hooker and the Outsiders, and plenty of delicious Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) brand product. The event was made possible thanks to allied industry partners Merial and Neogen GeneSeek Operations. “The Angus Foundation is one of the top
Angus in the West The history and heritage of the National Western is one many Angus families cherish. The stock show dates back more than 110 years, and the Angus breed has been active for nearly 75 of those years. Stadium Arena was built in 1909, and much of its historic charm remains within the old beams and green chairs. “It’s important to remember why we came to Denver to begin with, which is to grow our presence in the West with commercial cattlemen, and that’s what the National Western Angus Bull Sale continues to be,” Moczygemba said. “We’re taking our modern-day genetics and tying them back to the history of this great event.” The National Western Angus Bull Sale kicked off with the 2017 Angus Foundation Heifer Package, generously donated by the Stevenson family at Basin Angus Ranch near Joliet, Mont. Basin Lucy 6265 was in the spotlight, surrounded by members of the National Junior Angus Board (NJAB), as the crowded sale arena came alive. The winning bid for this year’s package was $170,000 from Charles W. and Judy Herbster, Herbster Angus Farms, Falls City, Neb. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Herbsters have purchased the elite female in support of Angus education, youth and research. Up on the sale block, the Association’s David Gazda, director of field services and bull sale manager, had a unique view of the audience for the evening’s events. “The crowd during the sale was unbelievable,” Gazda said. “We had breeders from throughout the country here on the seats. I think this, by far, would be a record number of people we’ve had in attendance for the bull sale.” The energy was high as the sale bulls entered the arena, starting with the Grand Champion Angus Sale Bull, DBR Take Notice, exhibited by Jake Barnes, Broken Arrow, Okla., selected earlier in the day. The ringmen called out bids while the bulls were displayed on a large video screen, providing the perfect view from all sides of the arena. More than 300 active buyers were registered on-site, and many more participated online through LiveAuctions.TV. Behind the sale arena, the Angus bulls were on display and available for buyers to evaluate before entering the ring. At the final gavel drop, 45 lots averaged $6,805 per

He said the event is a wonderful opportunity to market their genetics. “Being from the East Coast and the tiny state of Maryland, we come here to the heart of the livestock world and the beef business. We have more buyers here, and more numbers to enhance what we’re trying to do in our marketing,” Stabler said. Oklahoma State University’s Beef Herd Manager Jeremy Leister says they’ve been active in the National Western Angus Bull Sale for many years because of the added exposure they gain for their breeding program. “Like years past, this year has been a wonderful experience,” Leister said. “It’s a wonderful set of breeders, and a really good set of cattle. It was nice to visit with other breeders and receive compliments on our bull. That makes us, as a program at Oklahoma State, look even better.” The National Western Angus Bull Sale is often considered the unofficial start to the bull sale season, as nationwide production sales fill the calendar for weeks to come. If the crowd in Stadium Arena is an indication, the Angus breed has much to look forward to in the months and years to come. “While it’s important to celebrate our past, it’s even more important that we continue to look forward and keep our momentum going,” Moczygemba said. “Because at the end of the day, we want to sell more cattle, and we want to make sure they’re Angus cattle. We have the best breed in the world, and we need to continue to grow our market share.”

Ellie Kidwell Earns Junior Bronze Award
Ellie Kidwell, Walhonding, Ohio, has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze award, according to Jaclyn Clark, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. The 14-year-old daughter of Korey and Kelly Kidwell attends Tri-Valley Local Schools and is a member of the NJAA and the Ohio Junior Angus Association. She has participated in state and regional shows and showmanship contests and has submitted weight data to the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®). The Bronze award is the first of three levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle. The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide.
OSU Beef Cattle Artificial Insemination School
– Clif Little, OSU Extension Guernsey County Ohio State University Extension and the OSU Eastern Agriculture Research Station (EARS) in Belle Valley will be offering beef cattle artificial insemination (A.I.) school April 25, 26, & 27, 2017. Classes will run from 9 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. each day at EARS. Producers will learn the basics of utilizing Expected Progeny Difference (EPD’s), techniques for artificial insemination, semen handling, reproductive anatomy and physiology and estrous synchronization. On the third day the class will practice artificial insemination. The cost of the class is $100 which covers all materials and lunch. Registration is required by April 21, class is filled on a first come first serve basis and is limited to 20 participants. Madison, Wisconsin, to Host 50th NJAS
An annual highlight, the National Junior Angus Show will be hosted July 7-13, 2018. The National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) will celebrate a major milestone in 2018, as it hosts the 50th NJAS in Madison, Wis. The annual event is a summer highlight for many Angus juniors and their families, and the American Angus Association is proud of the young leaders it has encouraged over the past five decades. The 50th NJAS will take place July 7-13, 2018, at the Alliant Energy Center. “We are thrilled that the National Junior Angus Show will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Madison, Wisconsin,” said Deb Archer, Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau president and CEO. “This is the nation’s largest beef breed association with a large membership throughout North America. Our sales team worked hard to bring this group to Dane County and the Alliant Energy Center, and we plan to roll out the red carpet to this group in the summer of 2018.” NJAS participants will notice a change in the schedule, which begins on Saturday and ends on Friday. While the cattle shows are the main attraction, the week
also includes the showmanship competition, junior activities and a variety of life-skills contests. “Wisconsin will be a fantastic location as we bring together Angus juniors and their families to showcase the best the Angus breed has to offer — fantastic cattle and young leaders,” says Jaclyn Clark, events and education director for the American Angus Association. Sponsored by both the Illinois and Wisconsin Junior Angus associations, the NJAS is themed “Livin’ the Dream in 2018!” NJAS Cattle Shows More than 1,200 head of cattle are expected to compete in the showring at the 2018 NJAS in Wisconsin. The classes offered will provide opportunities for juniors to exhibit their owned heifers, bred-and-owned heifers, cowcalf pairs, steers, and bred-and-owned bulls. Additional events will include the National Showmanship Contest, NJAS Carcass Steer Contest, Cookoff Contests, and educational contests that include prepared and extemporaneous public speaking, career development, graphic design, writing, photography, livestock judging,
and video and poster competitions.

Claylick Run Angus Genetics Awarded Cattlemen’s Seedstock Producer of the Year Award (MARYSVILLE, Ohio) –The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded Claylick Run Angus Genetics of Newark, Ohio, the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award at the OCA awards banquet held Jan. 21, 2017, at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio. OCA and Farm World jointly sponsor the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award, which was created to recognize
top beef seedstock producers in Ohio. The award presentation featured a video of Claylick Run Angus Genetics that was generously sponsored by Granville Milling Co. and Purina Animal Nutrition. Claylick Run Angus Genetics is owned and operated by Dave Felumlee, his wife Dawn, daughter Keri, son Kacey. Dave was raised on a dairy farm, but decided to transition to Angus cattle for his own operation. Thirty years later, Claylick Run emphasizes quality genetics and performance in their herd. Dave sells purebred bulls and heifers to seedstock producers, as well as commercial producers throughout the state of Ohio and eastern United States. Dave’s goals are to improve his own cattle to have the elite seedstock operation east of the Mississippi. Dave’s mission is to provide the best possible genetics to the people that provide the beef to our country. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association is a non-profit membership organization that represents the business interests and way of life important to farm families that raise cattle. It serves as the voice and issues manager for all of Ohio’s beef cattle business including cattle breeders, producers and feeders. It is the beef industry’s grassroots policy development organization and is an affiliate of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
