To start, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year! As 2014 comes to an end, we are very busy preparing for the many events and activities coming up with the association in the first couple months of 2015.

The Ohio Angus Annual Meeting & Banquet will be held on January 31st at Springfield-Clark Career and Technology Center. The annual meetings will be held prior to the Banquet. More information is available on the website and page 1 of this newsletter.

At the Annual Banquet, we will be holding our Annual Directory page auction, selling many of the premier placement and full color pages. If you are interested in purchasing a premier page, but are unable to attend the banquet, please let me know.

Volume 3 of the Buckeye Best of Both Worlds Sale was held on November 22nd. The sale was again a success even though the sleet and freezing rain that moved across Ohio that morning made it difficult for potential buyers to travel to the sale. To accomadate the potential buyers the Executice Team decided to delay the start of the sale for an hour. Nonetheless the sale averaged $3,227 with cattle selling into 5 states including Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky!

Finally, the Ohio Beef Expo and Angus Super Star Sale are just a few months off. If you are considering consigning cattle to this great sale the consignment deadline in January 10th. 3. In case of excess numbers, the Ohio Angus Association reserves the right to have the sale committee review entries and screen if necessary. Preference will be given to older cattle and prior consignors.

4. Substitute lots are allowed. Prior notice is required.

5. All entries must participate in the parade for buyer review on Friday. Cattle will be paraded youngest to oldest, with heifers before bulls in Cooper Arena. Grooming is not necessary for the parade.

6. Membership in the Ohio Angus Association is required, and 2015 dues must accompany entry.

7. Bulls born after January 1, 2012 are eligible. 2014 bulls should be ready for service on sale day.

8. Females born after January 1, 2010 are eligible. Embryo transplants/recipients, and pregnancies are eligible.

9. Entries are limited to 5 bulls per consignor. Out of state members are limited to 4 head, no more than 2 Bulls.

10. Sale order to be determined by sale committee. All entries will sell as individual lots - No groups or buyer’s choice.

11. Entries must include the following: Ohio Angus membership form and $35 dues, Nomination form, $100 per lot consignment fee, typed footnote support info for catalog (email preferred-Sale Mgr. will write footnotes), and support photos if desired - Only digital pictures will be accepted, via email or CD. 12. All materials - footnote info, pictures, etc. must be received by January 10, or they may not be included in catalog!

Industry News & Notes Improved Feed Efficiency, Profitability

American Angus Association enhances $F and $B to improve selection capabilities.

The nation’s largest beef breed organization has released newly improved bioeconomic tools aimed at identifying animals with better performance and profit potential.

The American Angus Association on Friday, Dec. 5, released its national cattle evaluation (NCE) containing genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) and information like percentile tables and breed averages — along with updated economic assumptions used to calculate its suite of bioeconomic dollar-value indexes, or $Values.

The report contained important first-time enhancements to the feedlot value ($F) and beef value ($B) indexes, made possible by a growing amount of feed intake data recorded by producers during the last 10 years.

“Since their introduction in 2004, these terminal dollar-value indexes for sire evaluation have revolutionized beef cattle selection in the United States, allowing producers to select for a desirable combination of performance and product traits simultaneously,” says Dan Moser, director of the Association’s performance programs and president of Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI). “This is an important next step in improving the ability of cattlemen to select for more efficient, better-performing genetics.”

When multi-trait $Values for $F, $B and grid value ($G) were introduced a decade ago, very little feed-intake information was being collected, Moser explains. Today, however, the Association’s database houses more than 13,000 individual animal feed-intake records, as well as dry-matter intake (DMI) molecular breeding values for more than 100,000 animals.

“That increased data, along with a better industrywide understanding, has led to advancements in how we evaluate cattle for feed efficiency,” says Tonya Amen, AGI director of genetic services. “The residual average daily gain (RADG) EPD, for example, has documented differences in genetic levels of feed intake and efficiency within the breed since 2010. Now, it’s logical to include feed-intake information in pertinent $Value calculations.”

$Values are expressed in dollars per head and represent an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database. The values are derived using EPD data along with economic assumptions that consider a threeyear average, updated annually, for factors such as weanedcalf and fed-cattle prices, feed costs, grid values and more.

Economic advisors work closely with Association researchers to update ever-changing assumptions, like feed costs, that greatly influence profitability. The NCE updates released Dec. 5, with the newly introduced feed-intake component, result in $F and $B equations that Moser says better represent profit potential in an environment where 10-year breed trends show an increase in feed-intake requirements along with growth and carcass merit.

“This latest enhancement gives Angus seedstock producers and their commercial cattle customers even more advanced tools to characterize animals for how efficiently they

perform and, ultimately, how they influence their bottom lines,” he says. “That’s a powerful capability in a time where Angus genetics are more profitable than they’ve ever been.”

Industry News & Notes Demand study: Quality builds future for beef

People in the cattle business, especially those with cow-calf herds, are enjoying per-head income levels unimagined even a few years ago.

A glance at the corn market may remind them things can change, but a University of Missouri white paper says they can take action now to stay on a higher profit plane.

“Should Beef Quality Grade be a Priority?” That’s the title of a Master’s Thesis by Jillian Steiner and economist Scott Brown, which says quality drives the beef industry and holds the key to maintaining price strength. See the paper at http://www. cabpartners.com/news/research.php.

Elasticity of demand and price flexibility are two economic measures that point to USDA Prime and premium Choice brands as “luxuries” in some sense of the word. Yet, as beef herds rebuild, producers who aim for the premium targets are more likely to find buyers at higher prices in the future, the paper says.

Introducing the study during a fall field day at Thompson Research Center, Spickard, Mo., Brown asked a series of questions.

“What does today’s consumer demand from a beef product? All decisions are easy with record prices,” he says, “but what are you doing today that makes sure you can take advantage of market volatilities five to 10 years down the road?”

Noting the 87.7 million-head U.S. cattle inventory to start 2014 was the smallest since 1951, Steiner and Brown say drought and erratic markets delayed expansion. As that phase now begins, “Genetics, production and management decisions made in the near term will determine the future success of the beef industry.”

More importantly, producers must strive to sustain and improve beef demand, “the ultimate factor driving the size” of the cattle industry. There is much research on beef demand, but not on “disaggregating” it by quality grade, the paper says.

A 1966 study showed each grade has its own demand pattern, and 2001 work examined seasonal elasticities by grade, but there was no comprehensive analysis.

Empirical estimates of own-price, cross-price and income elasticities for Prime, Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand, USDA-branded Choice and Select should help determine the best production focus, the paper says. It made use of 10 years of USDA monthly load data and CAB company data to find answers.

Brown, noting a projected 2.5-billion-pound increase in pork and poultry supplies in 2015, says cattle producers would do well to shift production to quality grades that consumers do not readily abandon for other proteins.

Steiner quoted a number for Prime own-price elasticity of -2.33, which is also the number for Prime’s cross-price elasticity vs. other categories. (See Table 1)

“Prime, CAB and Choice have a lower cross-price elasticity than Select, which means price changes there have a smaller impact on the quantity of Select consumed,” she explains, noting the same is true in comparison to pork and

chicken.

“With greater production driving down the price of pork and chicken, we can expect a stronger substitution impact on Select than on the higher quality grades,” Steiner says.

Looking next at income elasticities, she explains demand for all beef tends to increase with consumer income, but the increase is higher for the top end of quality.

In particular, the paper says a 1% rise in income should mean a 1.63% increase in demand for the CAB brand, which was the most responsive to this measure of elasticity among all beef quality levels studied.

When all aspects of demand are projected out to 2020, the logarithmic trend shows “an impact of 10.6 million pounds more Prime demanded, 175.23 million pounds more Branded/ Choice (60 million of that CAB), but 62.32 million fewer pounds of Select demanded.”

Brown noted that the combined USDA Branded/ Choice category includes CAB, which follows a positive trend of 0.14. That’s much closer to Prime’s 0.16, indicating some of the lower Choice product is likely following a negative trend to arrive at the average of 0.07.

As a category, he estimates premium beef has added $4.5 billion to the beef economy in the nine years from 2005 through 2013, including 630 million that last year.

Industry News & Notes 2nd OCA Replacement Female Sale a Success

Grimes, OSU Extension Beef Coordinator The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) held their first Replacement Female Sale on November 28 at the Muskingum Livestock Auction Company in Zanesville, Ohio. A large crowd was on hand to bid on 88 high quality females in the sale. The sale represented an excellent opportunity for cow-calf producers to add quality females with documented breeding and health records to their herds and potentially take advantage of the positive economic outlook for the beef industry.

Buyers had the opportunity to appraise 88 lots of bred heifers, bred cows, and fall-calving pairs. The sale included 52 lots of bred heifers that averaged $2,557, 29 lots of bred cows that averaged $2,580, and seven fall-calving pairs which averaged $2,971. The 88 total lots grossed $228,600 for an overall average of $2,598. Prices ranged from $1,200 to $3,700. The females sold to buyers from Ohio and West Virginia. Col. Ron Kreis served as the auctioneer.

Nobleland Farm of Caldwell, OH consigned the top selling bred cow at $3,700. The lot 74 female was a Shorthorn-Angus cross and sold to Elmer Hines of Ashville, OH. The top selling bred heifer at $3,600 was consigned by Rachel Linder of Louisville, OH. The lot 28 female was a purebred Simmental heifer that sold to Rose Koehler of Lancaster, OH. The top selling pair at $3,300 was the lot 23 registered Angus female with a heifer calf at side from Estadt Angus of Orient, OH and sold to Elmer Hines of Ashville, OH.

The sale truly was an excellent opportunity for both buyers and sellers to capitalize on today’s outstanding beef cattle market. Buyers were able to improve their herds by adding high quality females with known genetic and health backgrounds. Sellers were able to capitalize on strong prices for breeding cattle. The 2014 sale represented a $786 per lot increase over the initial sale in 2013.

Ohio Stored Forage Production School

Forages are an important component of any ruminant livestock operation and producing quality stored forages impacts the bottom line. The 2015 Stored Forage Production School will focus on planting, harvesting, storing and feeding high quality forage feedstuffs. Ohio State University researchers, specialists and Extension educators will present new and current research in the area of forage genetics, use and management of annual forage crops, cutting/ harvest management, hay making process, silage production, forage fertility and forage evaluation will be presented. The school will cover new technologies being used in forage production and take a look at the economics involved in stored forage production.

Although the emphasis will be on forages and stored forage production for dairy operations, beef and sheep producers as well as commercial hay producers will also benefit from attending the school.

The stored forage production school will be held on Wednesday afternoons in January from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm on January 7, 13, 21 and 28.

The school will utilize a webinar format to broadcast the sessions to multiple counties throughout the state simultaneously. There will be time allowed for discussion and questions following each presentation.

To date the County Extension offices that have agreed to serve as host sites are: Adams, Brown or Highland (one location TBD in that 3 county area), Ashtabula, Coshocton, Greene, Licking, Monroe, Morgan, Morrow, Pickaway, Pike, Sandusky and Wayne Counties.

Pre-registration for the stored forage production school is requested by contacting the County Extension location that you choose to attend. The will be a registration fee which includes a notebook of the presentations and additional supplementary material. More details for each location will be available as the date of the January 7th school session approaches.
