Hopefully everyone has been fortunate enough to catch some of the recent rains, and are looking good going into fall grazing.

If you weren’t able to make it down to the Ohio State Fair, the Angus Shows were a huge success with cattle being exhibited by 48 exhibitors for Ohio & Indiana.

Trae Simmons, Tipton, IN evaluated the Open Show while, Gene Steiner, Mason, OH judged the Junior Show.

The Buckeye Best of Both Worlds Sale -Volume 5 is to be held on November 19th. Industry News & Notes Angus Juniors Rise Up in Phoenix NJAA members travel to Arizona to experience Southwest agriculture.

National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members recently traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., for the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) conference. Angus juniors from 29 states, as well as two from Canada, attended this year’s event Aug. 4-7 to participate in the annual leadership experience sponsored by the Angus Foundation.

“LEAD is an opportunity for our junior members to step away from the showring and socialize with their peers from around the U.S.,” says National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) Chair Macy Perry, Prather, Calif. “It gives juniors a chance to build relationships that will last a lifetime.”

The LEAD conference is hosted for youth ages 14-21 years old, and this year’s theme was “Rise Up in Phoenix.” While traveling in the Southwest, participants spent two days focused on agriculture, visiting Agritopia, an urban agriculture center, Queen Creek Olive Mill, Arid Zone Trees, Pinal Feeding Co. and Danzeisen Dairy.

Agritopia near Gilbert, Ariz., is an urban farm where locals have the opportunity to grow their own crops. It also markets its produce locally and operates a restaurant, where ingredients come fresh from the farm. Manager Katie Critchley says they hope to implement an education program within schools and the community to share where food comes from, as well.

“It’s good for the juniors to have the opportunity to see dairies and feedlots on a large scale,” Perry says. “A lot of these juniors come from the Midwest or East Coast where they don’t see these on a daily basis or at all.”

The LEAD conference is coordinated by the NJAB, who led team-building activities, leadership workshops and encouraged participants to step outside their comfort zones and meet new friends. Attendees also attended seminars on careers in agriculture, presented by industry professionals in meat science, genetics and marketing.

Juniors enjoyed a presentation by Patrick Perez, a motivational speaker who encouraged juniors to always strive to reach their goals and not give up when life gets hard. Through personal stories and his love for dancing, he inspired the juniors to know they can and will succeed if they try hard enough.

“We want [juniors] to love this experience,” Perry says. “We put on these conferences for them. We want them to come here and meet new people and then go home and be like, ‘Hey, Mom and Dad, I just had the best week ever.’”

Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Seeking Online Sale Consignments for Best of the Buckeye Eligible Cattle

These junior Angus members represented Ohio at the 2016 LEAD (Leaders Engaged in Angus Development) Conference, Aug. 4-7 in Phoenix, Ariz. A total of 108 juniors from 28 states and Canada attended the conference, “Rising Up in Phoenix,” where they enhance leadership and interpersonal skills while learning more about the beef industry.

A few miles down the road in Maricopa, Ariz., sits Pinal Feeding Co., which feeds nearly 150,000 head of Holstein cattle.

“It was really eye-opening to see a feedlot of that size,” says Brody Fitzgerald, LEAD participant from West Grove, Pa. “Back home in Pennsylvania, we don’t have anything like that. It’s great to experience and see different aspects of the industry.”

An hour drive across the valley, juniors had the opportunity to tour a 2,200 head dairy. Danzeisen Dairy is family owned, where they also bottle and market their milk products. With staples such as non-fat, whole and two-percent milk, Danzeisen also offers chocolate, coffee, root beer, strawberry and orange flavors that

The BOTB program is heading into its’ 4th year and is experiencing tremendous growth with program nominations increasing 10-15 percent each year. Prior to the program’s start, breed numbers were decreasing. Since BOTB started, nearly every breed has doubled and some have tripled in size! Average show sizes have been up across the board and Ohio State Fair breed divisions are seeing the highest numbers in nearly a decade.

Designed to provide additional marketing opportunities for Ohio’s seedstock breeders and a focused initiative to provide added incentive for Ohio showmen to purchase registered cattle from an in-state breeder, the BOTB committee encourages breeders and sellers to market their quality cattle through this new sale! Cattle sold in the online sales will be eligible for a buyer incentive program. If a BOTB animal sold through the sale places in the Top 3 at either the Ohio Beef Expo or Ohio State Fair, the buyer will be eligible for an additional matched premium of $300 for the Champion, $200 for Reserve Champion and $100 for Third Overall in their respective division.

The Best of the Buckeye program is hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association in conjunction with the Ohio Beef Expo and the Ohio State Fair, and recognizes top-placing Ohio bred, born and registered calves, along with the breeder and exhibitor, in each breed division at the two shows. Thanks to generous sponsors, $45,000 will be presented during 2017 in the form of premiums at the two shows, scholarships and awards.

The program was started to provide Ohio seedstock breeders an additional marketing opportunity, create a source

for moderately priced show steers and heifers by providing a programwith awards and prestige, and to attract new participants interested in showing at the Ohio Beef Expo and/or the Ohio State Fair. Best of the Buckeye cattle must be registered and bred by an Ohio cattleman and born in state. Embryo transfer calves and calves out of purchased bred cows are eligible if they were born in Ohio and list an Ohio cattleman as the breeder. Best of the Buckeye nominations can be made by the breeder or the exhibitor. Eastern Regional Jr Angus Show – Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Twelve OJAA members attended the Eastern Regional Jr Angus Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania along with 19 head of cattle. While completing his Ph.D., he was a visiting scientist at the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit in Australia, specializing in beef cattle. Over the course of his career, Miller has nearly 20 years of experience with beef cattle selection, genomics and technology.

Miller will serve Angus breeders and their customers under the leadership of Dr. Dan Moser, AGI president, and alongside the company’s genetic experts and specialists in the field. Industry News & Notes Cull Cow Market Update, Start Planning Now

As the summer season winds down, cattle producers must start making “keep or cull” decisions in their cow herds. Cull cows come to market throughout the year, but prices are seasonally lowest in the fall. This is when supply of cull cows to the market is the largest, as many U.S. cow-calf producers sell animals they do not wish to retain in the herd, before having to feed them over winter.

When cull cows are sold into the beef supply, the main product produced by them will be 90 percent lean ground beef. This is blended with 50 percent lean trimmings from fed steers and heifers to produce varying degrees of lean to fat hamburger and ground beef mixes. The dairy industry does play a role in the cull cow market, however their supply is much more consistent over the year, especially this year due to little change in the national dairy cow inventory.

Looking back on the past two years, beef herd inventory growth significantly decreased the supply of cull cows on the market. Cull cow prices in 2014 and the first half of 2015 reflected this tightened supply by trending up to record levels. The market dropped off significantly in August of 2015, but this was true across all sectors in the cattle industry.

For the first half of 2016, cull cow slaughter tracked 8 percent above the first half of 2015. This year-over-year increase was generally expected, if nothing else for the fact that older cows held back an extra year will only have a certain number of calving seasons left in them. Another way to put it is, so far this year the industry has returned to a more normal “culling rate.” From 2008 to 2013, the years surrounding the drought and cattle liquidation, the annual cow cull rate was between 10 percent and 12 percent of the January 1 national beef cow count. In 2014, that cull rate was 9 percent and in 2015 it was 8 percent. Looking forward to what we can expect cull cow slaughter to total for 2016; historically, beef cow slaughter increases about 4 percent in the second half of the year compared to the first half. Using this simple average, beef cow slaughter in 2016 can be expected to total around 10 percent above 2015, to 2.5 million head. That would calculate to an 8.5 percent culling rate for 2016.

Due to the increased supply of cull cows on the market, lower cull cow prices have been experienced so far. This year we have seen, and expect to continue seeing more normal price and supply seasonality in the cull cow market. According to the past five year average (20102014), cull cow prices have dropped 6 percent on average

from the beginning of September to mid-October. From mid-October to end of December, prices have historically increased about 8 percent on average.

In mid-July, cull cow prices in the Southern Plains were around $83 per cwt. live weight according to USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service. Assuming these prices stay fairly consistent until September (and using the historical price relationships described above), October prices could be around the mid $70s per cwt. and end of December prices could be around the low $80s per cwt. This pencils out to an additional $80 to $100 per cow sold by September or during the end of December as opposed to sold in October.

Several factors are supporting seasonally consistent price and supply relationships in the cull cow market through 2016. Included in these factors is the decrease in imported beef from Australia into the U.S., so far in 2016. Beef imported from Australia is generally the 90 percent lean ground beef used in manufactured food items, so it competes rather directly with domestic cull cow beef product. The decrease in Australian beef has led to an increase in demand for the U.S. 90 percent lean beef, and lends support to cull cow prices. Another factor includes a generally increased supply of cull cows based on larger cattle inventory levels and an assumed slow-down in cow and heifer retention due to consistently lower cattle prices.

Based on historical seasonal relationships, there is a strong possibility of receiving a higher price for cull cows before and after October. We expect more normal type of seasonality in cull cow prices to continue in 2017.

Compared to the possible low to mid $70s prices in October, March prices may increase up to the low $80s. If holding cull cows into 2017, key costs need to be penciled out, such as additional costs of feeding the cow if she needs to be pulled off pasture before taking her to auction.

Hay prices are expected to continue trending lower this year, and there should be ample supply of hay going into winter. However, as always there are no guarantees in these markets. These price and supply estimates and forecasts are based on general relationships, and each producer must pencil the benefits and costs they incur between the decisions of keeping, holding, or culling a beef cow.
