April is here, along with an ample amount of rain. However we are getting ever closer to green grass and spring turnout. And after the winter we had, I know everyone in anxiously awaiting the opportunity to turn cows out to grass. The cattle market has remained stout this spring with demand for Angus genetics as strong as ever. Many of the sales in this area has seen averages of $3,500+ This is a great time to take advantage and market cattle. If you are looking to sell please give me a call to see of the Ohio Angus Association can assist you. At the Ohio Beef Expo, the Ohio Angus Super Star was a huge success setting a new record high Angus average price of $3,665 on 55 Lots. 29 Angus bulls averaged $4,131 and 26 Angus females averaged $3,496. I would like to thank all the buyers and sellers for making this year’s sale such a huge success. Before we know it, the Ohio Angus Preview Show will be here. This years show will be held at the Preble Co. Fairgrounds in Eaton, OH. Hotel information, more detailed information and the entry forms will be posted on the Ohio Angus website in later April. The entry deadline will be May 15th.

Ohio Beef Expo Hosts Successful Sale (MARYSVILLE, Ohio) The Ohio Beef Expo held March 20-22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio hosted six breed sales, selling 231 live lots at an average price of $4,100 with a gross of $1,075,210. More than 30,000 cattle industry enthusiasts attended the 28th annual Expo, an event of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA). 2015 Ohio Angus Preview Show The 2015 Ohio Angus Preview Show will be hosted by the Miami Valley Angus Association and held June 12-14 at the Preble County Fairgrounds in Eaton, OH. The Preview will once again take place on a Saturday/Sunday format, with Jr. show to be held on Saturday, and Open show on Sunday. Jr. cattle must be checked in by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 12, and open show only cattle must be checked in by 12 noon on Saturday, June 13. Industry News & Notes Act in April to Honor the Best
By Kara Lee, Production Brand Manager, Certified Angus Beef LLC The pull-through demand from our foodservice and retail partners relies on a consistent and abundant supply of high-quality beef. Creating that supply – those cattle – is a team effort, but the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) team finds it a great honor to recognize some standout influencers in that supply chain each year. Ranchers and feedyard managers have a way of doing things really well, even when no one else is watching – which is usually. Genetic selections aren’t made on what the neighbors might think, and their drive for a higher CAB® acceptance rate is based on a sound business decision rather than an award. Still, we’re on a mission to find and recognize the best. That’s why we’re asking for your nominations again this year. Yes, it’s time to evaluate the outstanding producer-partners around you and share their success stories with us. This year, our team will be accepting nominations for two different categories. The Commitment to Excellence awards most closely take into consideration the applicants’ direct effect on the supply of high-quality cattle for the CAB® brand. Elements that may be considered for this award include genetics selection, management practices, customer service, progressive use of technology and overall CAB® acceptance rate. Nominations for this award can be made in one of three categories: -Seedstock breeder -Commercial producer -Feedlot The Progressive Partner award recognizes those who have found the most innovative and effective ways to add value to high-quality cattle. We’re looking for folks with an advanced marketing approach in today’s beef business. Nominees may come from any segment of the industry and may be recognized as individuals or as a business. Scholarships Support Beef’s Future

Since its inception in 1999, the Colvin Scholarship Fund has supported the education of nearly 50 future leaders in agriculture and animal sciences. These scholarships honor Louis M. “Mick” Colvin, CAB’s founding executive director of 21 years. 2015 Undergraduate Colvin Scholarship Awards: $6,000 – Elizabeth Nixon, Rapidan, Va. – Oklahoma State University $5,000 – Garrett Kays, Weir, Kan. – Kansas State University $4,000 – Lindsay Upperman, Chambersburg, Pa. – Kansas State University $3,000 – Sierra Jepsen, Amanda, Ohio. – The Ohio State University $2,000 – Kaitlyn Farmer, Aztec, N.M. – Texas Tech University 2015 Graduate Colvin Scholarship Award: $6,000 – Megan Webb, Brookings, S.D. – South Dakota State University The scholarship emulates Colvin’s role in making dreams a reality and inspiring others to do their best. For 2015, the annual prizes increased from $20,000 to $26,000 to award higher cash amounts to deserving students. Each of the six awards is $1,000 higher to keep pace with rising education costs, and thanks to the generosity of partners in the program. Undergraduate applicants were asked to identify what role science and genetics play in delivering more predictable beef sizing and a highquality eating experience. Elizabeth Nixon, top scholarship winner, said genomic testing to help find superior animals in a herd can increase predictability and consistency. The Oklahoma State University junior wrote, “The availability of information GeneMax provides is remarkable.” Nixon pointed out that the GeneMax® (GMX) Focus™ test from Zoetis can help identify females in the herd with better carcass genetics, serving as a key selection tool for commercial producers in

Garrett Kays foresees beef production benefiting from science and technology. “The most significant outcome that science and genetics have accomplished is enabling us to be more efficient with our dwindling supply of beef cattle,” he wrote. The agricultural economics junior and $5,000 Colvin Scholarship winner plans to pursue a master’s degree in agriculture economics and public policy from Cornell University. He listed the challenge of using feedstuffs more efficiently and producing more high-quality beef with less land as a need for technology and science to address. Kansas State University senior and $4,000 winner Lindsay Upperman sees genomic testing to identify genetics that fit each environment as the way of the future. “With new genetic technologies, I believe we can get much closer to a more consistent size in the cowherd, while still making improvements in both marbling and tenderness,” she wrote, adding that selection pressure on economic traits and carcass quality can help raise with predictable beef cut size and quality.
Sierra Jepson, Amanda, OH Sierra Jepsen used her experience on The Ohio Statue University livestock judging team to emphasize the role genetics play in the beef industry. The agricultural business junior and $3,000 winner wrote, “Through the use of expected progeny differences, artificial insemination, embryo transfer technology, sexed semen and many other technological advancements, we can see science at work to develop the next generation of beef cattle.” Texas Tech University senior Kaitlyn Farmer, who plans to attend veterinary school after graduation, wrote, “The industry’s ability to maintain consistency lies in our capacity to predict each calf’s
merit and feed the calf to its full potential.” The $2,000 scholarship recipient said the key to consistency is genetic selection using “EPDs and genetic markers,” to increase the accuracy and predictability. The Colvin Scholarship Fund began its graduate awards in 2012, opening doors to anyone in a recognized, full-time masters or doctorate program related to high-quality beef production. Megan Webb, animal science Ph.D. candidate at South Dakota State University, received the $6,000 graduate level award. Her research focuses on “The impact of maternal protein restriction in mid- to lategestation on gene expression, offspring growth, carcass composition and meat quality.” Her findings could have a significant impact on the role fetal nutrition plays in subsequent carcass quality. Webb wrote, “This research is critical to expanding the beef industry by improving our ability to consistently produce high-value carcasses and meat.” She identified previous research efforts that focus on postpartum nutrition, but her study will help understand gene expression and management during gestation. As the top scholarship recipients, Nixon and Webb also received an all-expense-paid trip to the 2015 CAB Annual Conference, Sept. 24-26 in San Antonio, Texas. There they will interact with leaders in the production, packaging, retail and foodservice areas of the beef industry. Launched in 1978 and owned by nearly 25,000 American Angus Association members, CAB is the largest branded beef program in the world. Fiscal year 2014 saw an eighth consecutive sales record with 882 million pounds sold through nearly 17,000 licensed partners in more than 46 countries. Industry News & Notes Future Angus Stockmen Enrollment Online
New program focuses on preparing and engaging the next generation of cattle producers.
Today’s cattle business is one driven by information, technology and market-savvy producers. In order to meet the needs of a growing population hungry for quality beef, the next generation of cattlemen will require an eye for quality and passion for continuous improvement. To meet that goal, the American Angus Association® recently launched a new program called Future Angus Stockmen — an effort to impact young cattle producers through learning and networking opportunities, while also building a bond with the Angus breed and its member-driven organization. “Our goal with the Future Angus Stockmen initiative is to give young producers, who want to play a role in beef production, the jumpstart they need to be successful in the business,” says Ginette Kurtz, Association director of commercial programs. “Strong skills in communications, marketing, data analysis and business planning are critical in our industry’s challenge to produce quality beef.” Future Angus Stockmen is aimed toward collegeage or recent graduates who want to raise high quality Angus-based commercial cattle. The program will offer educational opportunities that teach participants how to thrive in the cattle industry, social networking to connect them with fellow producers, and leadership development to instill an entrepreneurial spirit and drive to improve their businesses. Enrollment forms are now available online, and can be completed at any time. There are two options when enrolling in the Future Angus Stockmen program. Participants can choose to enroll 15 or 30 head, and receive substantial cost savings for valuable programs, such as GeneMax Focus™ DNA tests, AngusSource or AngusSource Genetic, and MaternalPlus® or Beef Record Service enrollment. Thanks to generous funds provided by Allflex and Destron Fearing, young people who enroll in the program will also have the chance to apply for scholarships if they are or will be enrolled in a two- or four-year college while majoring in agriculture. Scholarship winners will be announced at the 2015 National Angus Convention & Trade Show, Nov. 3-5, in Overland Park, Kan. Upcoming plans include an application-based gathering of young cattle producers hosted in the summer of 2016 at the American Angus Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. The event will be a culmination of learning and leadership experiences to solidify their agriculture commitment. If you are interested in improving the quality of your cow herd, there’s no better opportunity to connect with fellow breeders, attend educational seminars, be inspired by keynote speakers and plan for the future of the beef cattle business. “This event serves as a meeting place for anyone in beef, from seedstock breeders to commercial cattlemen and feeders,” says Becky Weishaar, Creative Media director for Angus Media and lead contact for the convention. “By attending, cattle producers can take part in many valuable opportunities for learning, networking and bringing their perspectives to the discussion on raising quality cattle.” Now in its second year, the event will feature expanded workshops that cover a variety of topics, including genomics, recordkeeping, herd management and performance tools. Industry-leading speakers, American Angus Association staff and other experts will be among the presenters. Participants will learn practical applications to take home to the farm or ranch. Also, a three-day trade show featuring allied industry partners will offer cattlemen a chance to browse through the latest in products and services available to the beef industry and to visit with Angus breeders from throughout the country. Convention highlights include: • A preconvention Kansas regional cattle tour to be hosted by the Kansas Angus Association Monday, Nov. 2 • A full day of genomics discussion Tuesday, Nov. 3, during the International Angus Genomics Symposium, sponsored by GeneSeek, which will bring together leading experts in the field of DNA technology • Angus University, sponsored by Merck Animal Health, featuring a daylong seminar with keynote speakers and break-out sessions exploring quality cattle and quality beef Wednesday, Nov. 4. • The Angus Media Trade Show, which kicks off Tuesday, Nov. 3, with more than 100 exhibitors ranging from animal health providers to equipment dealers, and Angus breeders to nutrition companies • Plenty of social events, including nationally known entertainment the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 4
