The the purebred cattle market has remained solid this spring considering the slight dip in the commercial markets. Many of the sales in this area has seen averages of $3,000+ Which is off from last year but very comparable or slightly higher then the 2013 & 2014 levels. If you are looking to sell please give me a call to see of the Ohio Angus Association can assist you. At the Ohio Beef Expo, the Ohio Angus Super Star was a huge success with average price of $3,495 on 52 Lots. 29 Angus bulls averaged $3,512 and 23 Angus females averaged $3,473. I would like to thank all the buyers and sellers for making this year’s sale such a huge success.

Raising the Bar with the National Junior Angus Association
Final Call for Angus Scholarship Applications
May deadlines for Angus Foundation and American Angus Auxiliary applications.
Angus youth participate in leadership conferences at the University of Arkansas and South Dakota State University. Nearly 60 members of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) recently traveled the country to take part in leadership development and learn more about the beef cattle business. At Raising the Bar conferences, Angus youth are challenged to step outside their comfort zones, meet new people and learn what life is like in other parts of Angus country. NJAA members met March 3-6 at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., and April 7-10 at South Dakota State University in Sioux Falls, S.D. “Raising the Bar conferences are a fantastic way for our juniors to get involved with the National Junior Angus Association, experience different parts of the country and learn from some of the industry’s best,” says Jaclyn Clark, American Angus Association director of events and education. “We’re grateful to all those who volunteered their time and support to make these programs possible.” Raising the Bar at the University of Arkansas welcomed more than 20 juniors to Fayetteville, Ark., where they toured the animal science department on campus. Participants also toured Tyson Foods and heard from Chairman of the Board John Tyson. While there, they also learned about the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand, took part in a goal-setting workshop and learned how to eliminate myths in the beef business. Throughout the three-day event, the group also spent time at the Walmart Distribution Center and visited JAC’s Ranch. In April, Raising the Bar was hosted at South Dakota State University. Nearly 40 Angus juniors traveled to Sioux Falls, S.D., and visited Trans Ova Genetics, and toured the South Dakota State University campus and cow-calf unit. Attendees heard from university experts including Joe Cassady, animal science department head; Josh Cribbs, livestock judging coach; Adam Rhody, meat lab manager; and Cody Wright with the bull sale and cow-calf unit. The group also traveled across state lines to visit the R&R Feedlot near Adrian, Minn., and visited Chestnut Angus Farm in Pipestone, Minn. Now in its ninth year, Raising the Bar conferences continue to foster the development of Angus youth by hosting events across the country. The NJAA, with sponsorship from the Angus Foundation, conducts several Raising the Bar conferences in varying cities each year. The deadline is quickly approaching to apply for scholarships through the Angus Foundation and American Angus Auxiliary. Applications must be postmarked by May 1 and May 2, respectively. Angus youth should act now to ensure their materials arrive in a timely manner. The Angus Foundation offers general scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in higher education. Eligible Angus youth meeting the qualifications for the Angus Foundation’s 2016 Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship Programs will be considered by the Angus Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee. As in past years, other specific and special criteria scholarships administered by the Angus Foundation will also be available. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the 2016 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Grand Island, Neb. A long-standing scholarship awarded through the Angus Foundation is the $1,000 Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB)/National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Scholarship. Applicants must have at one time been an NJAA member and must currently be a junior, regular or life member of the American Angus Association, along with being an incoming sophomore, junior or senior in college majoring in animal science, meat science, food science, agricultural communications or a related field of academic study. A recipient will be honored at NJAS in July. The Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship, also through the Angus Foundation, will provide $1,000 to three students who use Angus genetics in their seedstock or commercial operation. Applicants must be enrolled in a junior college, four-year college/ university or other accredited institution for fall 2016. They can be an entering freshman or a continuing student in any undergraduate program. Applicant or the applicant’s parents/ guardians must have transferred or been transferred a registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2013). Applications for all Angus Foundation scholarships are available online at www.angusfoundation.org and must be postmarked by May 1 and mailed to Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, MO 64506. The American Angus Auxiliary awards scholarships to the top five male and top five female applicants selected from finalists chosen in the applicant’s home state. Each state auxiliary is eligible to submit one male and one female application to the national contest. The winners will be announced during the 2016 NJAS closing ceremonies. In addition, the five finalists for the Miss American Angus contest are selected from the top national female applicants. The application for American Angus Auxiliary Scholarships is also available online. Interested junior Angus members who are high school seniors may download the application, access directions and general information through the scholarship section of the Auxiliary website. Applications from the state contact must be postmarked by May 2. For specific state and local Auxiliary scholarship deadlines and information, visit the Auxiliary website, or contact your state or regional Angus Auxiliary. The next OJAA meeting will be April 17th at 2 PM, located at the Ohio Cattlemen’s office in Marysville, Ohio. At this meeting we will be discussing many important topics and will be planning for the upcoming show season. Agenda items include the upcoming NJAS, Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show, and fitting at the Ohio Junior Angus Preview. The 2016 NJAS is going to be held July 3-¬9 in Grand Island, NE at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds. The 2016 Eastern Regional Angus show will be held June 17-¬19 in Harrisburg, PA at the PA Farm Show Complex. The 2016 Ohio Jr Angus Preview show will be held June 10¬12 in Marysville, Ohio. The Ohio Beef Expo was held March 18¬-20 in Columbus, Ohio at the Ohio Expo Center. There were many fun and exciting opportunities for Juniors such as Showmanship, Beef QA, and Judging. Our first fundraiser of the year consisted of lining up sale cattle for the Ohio Super Star Angus Sale. Thanks to McKayla and Ty Raines, Samantha Wallace, Jacob LeBrun, and Marissa Hall for lining up the cattle. Cooper Arena was packed on Sunday morning to watch the Angus Shows. It was great to see the Angus heifers and steers filling up both sides of the Arena. It is exciting that the summer show season is about to begin. Ohio Beef Expo Hosts Successful Sales (MARYSVILLE, Ohio) The Ohio Beef Expo held March 18-20 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio hosted five breed sales, selling 297 live lots at an average price of $3,200 with a gross of $950,675. Angus Names Director of Member Services
Jerry Cassady leads membership efforts for the American Angus Association. Illinois-native Jerry Cassady brings more than 20 years experience promoting the Angus breed and marketing seedstock cattle to his new role as the American Angus Association’s director of member services. Beginning March 1, Cassady will lead the team of member service representatives in Saint Joseph, Mo., and continue to grow relevance for the organization’s programs and services. Cassady isn’t a new face to the American Angus Association. He served as a regional manager in the Midwest for many years, where he developed a keen knowledge of the organization and administered rules and policies. “Jerry is a perfect fit for his new role, with his experience as a regional manager and vast understanding of the Angus breed and member needs,” says Allen Moczygemba, Association CEO. “He has a genuine appreciation for Association members and a drive to continue to provide breeders with the highquality service they deserve from their organization.” Cassady first joined the Association in 1992, representing the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Most recently, Cassady ran his own sales consulting company, JC Marketing, out of Bloomington, Ill. Previously in his career, he also served as an instructor at Joliet Junior College, where he taught animal science and coached the livestock and meats judging teams. “Our members are the heartbeat behind every program and service at the American Angus Association, and I am honored to be returning to
a team that does so much for breeders, day-in and day-out,” Cassady says. “The Association’s member service staff is second to none in the cattle business, and I look forward to playing a role in continuing that level of quality for years to come.” Cassady earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Illinois State University in 1983. Three years later, he completed his master’s degree in animal science from Southern Illinois University, where his research focused on economically important traits in performance-tested bulls. A native of central Illinois, Cassady was raised on his family’s grain and livestock farm. He was active in 4-H and FFA, showing cattle on the state and national levels. Cassady has two children, Kody and Keegan, who’ve been active in the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA). His family also includes wife, Ellen, and stepsons Elliott, Chet and Evan.
Angus Remembers Arkansas Breeder Fellow cattle producers honor legacy of David McMahon Sr.
The American Angus Association® and its entities today remember David McMahon Sr., Fort Smith, Ark., a lifelong Angus breeder, former board director and supporter who passed away March 23. David was the owner of Belle Point Ranch and Belle Point Beverages Inc., and served on the Association’s Board of Directors, including the first Certified Angus Beef LLC board and as co-chair of the Angus Foundation Leadership Cabinet. He was born March 26, 1931, in Clarksville, Ark., to Donald James and Marguerite Dixon Tyson McMahon. David is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; four daughters, Mary Lynn Holland and husband Marvin Holland, Jr., of Branch, Kathleen McGuire and husband Tim McGuire of Fort Smith, Julie French and husband Steve French of Beaverton, Mich., Susan Taylor and husband Rick Taylor of Lavaca; one son, David McMahon, Jr. and wife Tammy of Fort Smith; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and brother Jim McMahon of Fort Gibson, Okla. The family has chosen six memorials from which to honor Dave’s memory, including the National Junior Angus Show Endowment Fund, 3201 Frederick Ave., Saint Joseph, Mo., 64506.

2016 Ohio Angus Preview Show The 2016 Ohio Angus Preview Show will be hosted by the West Central Angus Association and held June 10-12 at the Union County Fairgrounds in Marysvile, OH. The Preview will once again take place on a Saturday/Sunday format, with Jr. show to be held on Saturday, and Open show on Sunday. Cody Sankey Selected for Young Cattlemen’s Conference The Angus Foundation sponsors one individual for the elite leadership experience. Cody Sankey of Economy, Ind., will represent the American Angus Association and the business breed during the 2016 Young Cattlemen’s Conference (YCC), hosted June 1-9 by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). The annual event is considered the premier leadership development program within the cattle industry, and the Angus Foundation is proud to sponsor one attendee each year. Throughout the weeklong experience, YCC participants travel the country to witness all levels of beef production, hone their leadership skills and gain a better understanding of policy issues affecting cattlemen and women. This year marks the 37th annual YCC, and to qualify, an individual must be nominated by one of NCBA’s affiliate members, be between the ages of 25 and 50, and be an NCBA member. “The Young Cattlemen’s Conference is truly an eyeopening experience for many future leaders in the beef business,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “We’re grateful to our donors who make sponsorships, like this one, possible for deserving young people. Cody Sankey will represent the Angus breed proudly and bring back lessons to help move our business forward.” A lifelong Angus breeder and Association member, Sankey grew up in Council Grove, Kan., on his family’s ranching operation, Sankey’s 6N Ranch. He was an active member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), and continues his involvement today by serving as the second vice-president of the Indiana Angus Association. He was also elected president of the South Eastern Indiana Angus District Association. “As a member of the largest beef breed in the country, it’s important for us to lead and be involved,” Sankey says. “Being involved in the YCC program will allow me to submerse myself into areas of our industry that I’m not as familiar with, and the issues that will impact me as a young producer.” Sankey serves as the key accounts manager for BioZyme Inc., representing the entire United States. He attended Oklahoma State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a master’s in ruminant nutrition. Sankey was also part of the 2001 National Champion Livestock Judging Team. Before his current role with BioZyme, Sankey managed

He and his wife, Lindsay, remain involved with the family’s Angus herd and travel the country attending shows and events. “I look forward to sharing the knowledge and experience I gain from YCC with my fellow Angus breeders so we can continue to position Angus cattle as industry leaders for generations to come,” Sankey says. The 2016 YCC tour begins in Denver, Colo., with a comprehensive overview of the industry. According to NCBA, the group will take an in-depth look at many of the issues affecting the beef industry, how the organization addresses these issues, and an industry outlook report from CattleFax. Participants will then travel to JBS Five Rivers’ Kuner Feedyard, one of the nation’s largest cattle feeding operations, with a one-time capacity of 100,000-plus head in northern Colorado. The group will also tour the JBS Greeley facility, one of the nation’s largest beef packing and processing plants. After leaving Colorado, the group heads east to visit the Chicago Board of Trade and OSI Inc., one of the nation’s premier beef patty manufacturers. Then it’s off to Washington, D.C., to meet with legislators and hear from federal official who make decisions affecting agriculture. Seedstock Improvement Sale Results
The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association hosted their annual Seedstock Improvement Sale on April 9 at the Union Stock Yards sale facility in Hillsboro. A total of 43 yearling and two-year-old and older bulls were sold for a total of $114,700 to average $2,667 per head. This represents a nearly $600 per head decrease over the previous year’s sale, but an average price similar to the what was experienced in 2014. The top three sales of the day were consigned by Way View Cattle Co. LLC of Hebron, Ohio. The highselling bull was Lot 1, an Angus bull sired by Connealy Game Changer. He sold for $4,300 to Davidson Farms of Washington Court House, OH. The second high-selling bull was Lot 6, an Angus bull sired by Connealy Tobin 8400. He sold for $4,200 to Adam Fout of Beaver, OH. The third high-selling bull was Lot 3, an Angus bull sired by Connealy Quick Fix. He sold for $3,750 to West Wind Farm LLC of Mt. Sterling, OH. The fourth and fifth high-selling bulls were consigned by Atterholt Farms of Jeromesville, OH. The fourth high-selling bull was Lot 22, an Angus bull sired by Connealy Right Answer 746. He sold for $3,600 to Jewel Farms of Marysville, OH. Rounding out the top five sellers was Lot 33, an Angus bull sired by Connealy Confidence 0100. He sold for $3,500 to Davidson Farms of Washington Court House, OH. A total of 24 Angus bulls sold for an average of $2,929/head. Eight Red Angus bulls sold for an average of $2,288/head. Five Hybrid Simmental bulls averaged $2,210/head. Four Purebred Simmental bulls sold for an average of $2,600/head. Two Hereford bulls averaged $2,325/head. To kick off the conference, Lampe welcomed attendees to Wooster, Ohio, and they heard comments from American Angus Auxiliary President Shally Rogen, Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) Marketing Director Deanna Walenciak, American Angus Association CEO Allen Moczygemba and Angus Foundation President Milford Jenkins. The evening closed with singing, dancing and entertainment provided by cattlewoman and Auxiliary member Cara Ayers of Sweet Home, Ore. The “Brand Champion Chopped Competition” was the main event on April 3, where participants were assigned teams and given a mystery basket of ingredients — including CAB® as the main course. Six teams of women took on the Education and Culinary Center’s state of the art kitchen, and participants voted for their favorite meal. Attendees also had the opportunity to explore and shop at the Pine Tree Barn and visit Troutman Vineyards, located just outside Wooster. On the final day of the conference, CAB President John Stika and Vice President of Marketing Tracey Erickson spoke about the CAB brand and the many moving parts associated with the industry’s largest branded beef program. The women also toured CAB headquarters, led by CAB Meeting Planner Danielle Foster, and took part in sessions with Amanda Barstow, director of legal affairs, and Margaret Coleman, director of digital marketing. The conference’s youngest attendee, 24-year-old Bailey Bannister of Kent, N.Y., said she was excited to attend the conference to become more involved in the Angus breed. “I think this opportunity thrust me into meeting more people,” she said. “As a woman, it’s easier to connect with women first, and then work my way into more industry activities. I love any conference that will help further myself and my knowledge of the industry, and this has been a great place to start.” The Women Connected conference is funded by the Angus Foundation, and attendees are responsible only for their travel to and from the conference location. Women interested in attending must fill out an application to participate. The conference was first hosted in 2012 at the American Angus Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. The next Women Connected conference will be in 2018 in a location to be determined.
Women Connected Hosted at CAB Headquarters The American Angus Auxiliary’s biennial conference traveled to Wooster, Ohio, April 2-4. More than 35 women from 17 states gathered at the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand’s Education and Culinary Center April 2-4 in Wooster, Ohio, to network, learn and celebrate their love for the Angus breed during the American Angus Auxiliary’s third biennial Women Connected conference. “The main goal of Women Connected is to provide an opportunity for participants to network with other Angus women with a common bond,” said Women Connected Chair Anne Lampe, Scott City, Kan. “In bringing these women together, we hope to educate them, help them engage with one another and empower them to meet their goals.”

Industry News & Notes Ohio Beef Expo Posts New Records for Event (MARYSVILLE, Ohio) – Beef industry enthusiasts gathered in Columbus, Ohio, March 18-20, for the 2016 Ohio Beef Expo. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) hosted more than 30,000 participants and attendees at the Ohio Expo Center. The Expo provides an annual opportunity for those in the cattle industry in Ohio, and across the nation, to learn and enhance their operations through a tradeshow, cattle sales and educational events. The Expo kicked off with a trade show featuring 140 vendors from 15 states and a nutrition seminar sponsored by Purina Animal Nutrition and Zoetis. This year’s trade show broke the event’s record in number of exhibitors. Armstrong Ag was selected as the premier large booth exhibitor; and K Buildings was selected as the premier small booth exhibitor. Four breed shows and one breed parade were featured Friday, as well as numerous breed displays representing the Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Maine-Anjou, Miniature Hereford, Murray Grey, Simmental and Shorthorn breeds. The Genetic Pathway, located in the breed’s barn, had the industry’s most popular sires and donor prospects on display throughout the weekend. Five breed sales brought in large crowds on Saturday, March 19, selling 297 lots with an average price of $3,200 and a gross of $950,675. Three recipients were honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for their contribution to the Expo’s annual success. Lou Ellen Harr; M.H. Eby and Bill Sexten were all honored. Harr, Jeromesville, has been actively involved in the Expo since 1989, including bringing cattle to the Hereford sale. M.H. Eby, West Jefferson, is a family owned business specializing in grain and livestock trailer who has attended many Expos as an exhibitor in the trade show and a sponsor of various events. Bill Sexten, Washington Court House, has held many roles with OCA and the Ohio Beef Expo. These include OCA President, chairman of the Ohio Beef Council, Regional Vice President of NCBA, junior show committee member and Vice Chair of the Expo. For junior exhibitors, Friday afternoon began with two fitting and clipping demonstrations and a welcome party. Events continued Saturday with 318 youth participating in the judging contest and 450 exhibitors in the showmanship competition, sponsored by Farm Credit Mid-America. The stands were full in Enviroscapes Arena for the Beef Quality Assurance training. The junior portion wrapped up Sunday with the market animal show and heifer show with a combined total of 829 head from across the state. During the event, OCA volunteers signed up and
renewed more than 250 memberships including NCBA memberships. Any current or new OCA member had the pportunity to win some great prizes. Chris Diehl, Rootstown, Ohio, won a VetGun dontated by AgriLabs. J&J Steakbarn, owned by Jim and Jackie Murray, gave away a $100 gift card won by Bryan Tussing. Members joining at the Ohio Beef Expo also received discounted offerings on Heritage Cooperative’s Cattlemen’s Edge Program. The OCA County Affiliate of Williams County Beef Producers won the County Affiliate Recruitment Contest drawing and received their choice of a grill, set of Tru-Test Scales or an equal amount toward National Cattlemen’s Beef Association convention registration, sponsored by the Ohio Corn Marketing Program. A social was hosted for OCA members, volunteers, trade show participants and cattle exhibitors on Thursday, March 17, at the Crowne Plaza North. Sponsoring the event was LONGRANGE by Merial.
