Industry News & Notes Angus University set for Nov. 5 at National Angus Convention

American Angus Association and Merck Animal Health share the “Story of a Steak.”

Make plans now to attend the first-ever Angus University, an all-day educational event that takes place as part of the 2014 Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show. Angus University will be Nov. 5 at the KCI Expo Center in Kansas City, Mo. Sponsored by Merck Animal Health, the Angus University is themed “The Story of the Steak” and will build on the successful television and editorial campaign developed by the High Plains Journal. The “Story of a Steak” series, which appears on The Angus Report, a news program on RFD-TV, emphasizes the importance of all industry sectors working collaboratively to improve the quality of beef and the profitability of producers, feeders and packers. Headlining the event will be keynote futurist Dr. Lowell Catlett who will share his perspectives on emerging technologies and their potential impacts on the cattle industry. In addition, Angus University will feature a slate of top-flight speakers representing all sectors of the beef industry – from ranchers to chefs – and include producers and others profiled in the successful TV segments. “Our goal is to help Angus producers more fully recognize the opportunities not only of producing the highest-quality product in the world – Certified Angus Beef® – but also to understand the advantages of working with other industry sectors as key to building consumer demand for our products,” says Bryce Schumann, American Angus Association® chief executive officer. The Angus University is part of the three-day Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show, the first of its kind for the Angus industry. The convention will feature top-notch speakers, evening entertainment and also a comprehensive trade show with products and services of interest to all cattle producers. “We are very excited to develop this opportunity for our membership and commercial

producers and feedlot operators who’ve chosen to invest in Angus genetics and Angus programs and services,” Schumann says. “I encourage anyone with a stake in the Angus breed to attend, to learn, to enjoy and to play a larger role in shaping our collaborative success.” The event is open to cattle producers across the country. To register for the 2014 Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show, as well as the Angus University, visit www.angus.org/ angusconvention.

OCA Thanks Cattlemen for Voting to Increase the Ohio Beef Checkoff MARYSVILLE, Ohio — The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) received notification from the Ohio Department of Agriculture yesterday certifying that the Ohio Beef Marketing Program Referendum, seeking to increase the state’s beef checkoff from $1 to $2 per head, passed with a majority of favorable votes by Ohio’s cattlemen. “We were very happy to get the news,” said Frank Phelps, OCA President. “I would like to thank cattlemen throughout Ohio and those organizations who got behind this effort and understood the need to increase checkoff resources to better promote our product.” According to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s announcement, a total of 2118 votes were certified; 1527 votes, or 72 percent of the total, were cast in favor of the referendum and 591 votes, about 28 percent, were opposed to the increase. Producers were able to vote by absentee ballot, and also in person at the Ohio Department of Agriculture and at OSU Extension offices. The Ohio Beef Checkoff currently generates $305,000 in operating funds for the Ohio Beef Council. The Ohio Beef Council develops and supports educational programs, such as Beefonomics, which bring information about beef production and nutrition into the classroom. It also supports retail grocery promotions by providing research and merchandizing ideas through a website and monthly newsletter. continued on page 7

The recently passed checkoff increase will generate a total of approximately $900,000 that will stay in Ohio and allow the Council to extend beef’s presence in Ohio’s schools, conduct more public relations outreach with Ohio food publications, directly connect with consumers through spokesperson training programs, provide nutrition seminars for health professionals and develop a greater statewide media presence through radio and print, all which help to reach Ohio’s 11.5 million consumers with a beef message. “We’re excited that the beef producers of Ohio had the foresight to invest in the future of Ohio’s beef industry,” said Bill Sexten, Ohio Beef Council Chairman. “These actions will provide the Ohio Beef Council stability to continue and grow programs that drive beef demand in the state.” To learn more about how Ohio beef checkoff dollars are invested, visit the Ohio Beef Council’s website at www.ohiobeef.org. Though the OCA initiated the referendum, the organization will not benefit from the checkoff

increase. More information on the official starting date for collecting the additional $1 and obtaining refunds will be available in the coming months.
