Ohio Angus Breeders, I’m sure like many of you I’m starting to wonder if this cooler weather will ever give up! The warmer and drier weather in March had me thinking it would be an early spring. However April and now early May has been unusually damp and cool, delaying planting and spring turnout for many. But the forecast is looking more favorable. I hope you all are having a safe spring in the fields and are getting ready for hay season just around the bend. Despite the softer fat cattle and feeder cattle prices the demand for Angus genetics held strong through the spring. With most all of the spring Angus sales in Ohio and surrounding states seeing steady averages and grosses compared to recent years. I anticipate the demand for Angus based cows to hold through the fall. If you are interested in marketing females privately or through a fall consignment sale, give me a call to see how Ohio Angus can help you. Just around the corner will be the Ohio Angus Preview Show. The show will be held on June 16-18th at the Union Co. Fairgrounds. More details are included on the front page as well on the website at www.ohioangus. org. If you are interested in supporting the Preview Shows by purchasing a sponsorship, contact me to discuss options that are available. The Preview Show entry deadline is May 19th. The Saturday evening dinner will be held at the fairgrounds and will be sponsored by West Central Angus Association. Looking ahead, the Ohio State Fair Angus shows will be held on July 25-27. Industry News & Notes A Breeding Soundness Exam: Insurance for Your Breeding Season

I received the call on Monday. I seem to receive this call 6-8 times each year. This particular rancher had just finished getting his cows diagnosed for pregnancy. He had 43 fall calving cows. Last fall, these cows were synchronized for artificial insemination and were exposed to one bull for about 5 weeks and a second bull for 7 weeks. Only 22 cows conceived and all of them conceived to the AI. The first question I asked this rancher was the obvious one; did you get a breeding soundness exam (BSE) performed on your bulls? His response; the bulls had one when he bought them but he had not had one done since (2-3 years). The bulls were checked and, sure enough, both were infertile. What is a BSE? A BSE is a fertility exam performed on bulls by a veterinarian. A BSE has three components; scrotal circumference, a physical exam, and a semen evaluation. Scrotal circumference is highly correlated with semen output and serving capacity. It is recommended that a 12-13 month old bull have a scrotal circumference of at least 30 cm. The physical exam is performed to simply ensure that a bull is physically up to the challenge of the breeding season. Are his feet and legs structurally correct? Is he free from injury and/or infection? The veterinarian then examines the bull’s semen to determine if the sperm cells are normal. The bull is then graded as satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or deferred. Bulls classified as unsatisfactory are considered infertile and it is not recommended that they be used for breeding. Bulls that receive the deferred classification had some irregularities in their ejaculate and a second collection is required to determine his fertility. A BSE is a highly reliable tool to use to identify bulls that are infertile. Results from surveys nationally and in Kentucky indicate that fewer than 30% of cattlemen routinely subject their bulls to a BSE. I am amazed by how few people obtain a BSE in their herd bull before each breeding season. We purchase car, health, life, and crop insurance why wouldn’t we purchase a little breeding-season insurance? We protect ourselves against most disasters but we don’t protect our cow herd from the ultimate disaster? A BSE will cost $50-100 so it is a fairly inexpensive, easy form of risk management. I’m fairly certain that the cattleman that called me wished he had gotten a BSE on his bulls before he found out that he had 21 open cows. The $150 investment in breeding insurance (BSE) seems small compared to the lost income from 21 cows ($15-18,000). So protect your investment. Obtain a BSE on all your bulls 30 days before every breeding season.

Every summer, young cattlemen meet in Central Ohio for an unforgettable three-day event. The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s (OCA) Young Cattlemen’s Conference and Tour (YCC) features many exciting and educational opportunities for beef industry leaders and cattle producers alike. The event offers industry insight and enhanced networking for attendees to take home and use in their own operations to keep them progressive and profitable. Participants are challenged to think outside the box, as they practice their public relations skills and learn the best ways to present their operations and the beef industry as a whole to consumers. They have the chance to visit the Ohio Statehouse and discuss current issues with elected officials, as well as, learn more about the product they produce by participating in a mini Beef 509 at the Ohio State University Animal Sciences Department. To top it all off, attendees have the opportunity to take a behind-thescenes tour of the Ohio State Football practice facility and enjoy a fun-filled evening at a Columbus Clippers Baseball game. YCC is open to any OCA member over the age of 20 who possesses great leadership potential and is active in their community. Counties are encouraged to nominate participants for YCC, but individuals may also self-nominate. Couples are also encouraged to attend. The cost is $150 per participant or $250 for couples, and nomination forms and payment must be submitted to the Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation by June 16, 2017. This summer will be a very exciting one for the Ohio Junior Angus members! With events like Junior Nationals, Ohio State Fair, Ohio Angus Preview Show, Eastern Regionals and the LEAD conference, we are sure to be busy! As with any show, there are some deadlines members need to be aware of. The National Junior Angus Show will be held in Des Moines, Iowa on July 9-15, 2017. The theme is “Winning with the Angus Team” and as an association, we are trying to decide whether to incorporate the theme into our state display or to try and promote the 2018 Eastern Regionals that we will be hosting. Ownership deadline for Junior Nationals is May 15, 2017. May 15 is also the entry deadline for this show. Be sure to meet the deadline so you can make it to this wonderful event! For this year’s show fundraiser, we are collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Keep collecting so we can turn them in at the show! As for the Ohio Angus Preview Show, it will be held in Marysville, Ohio at the Union County Fairgrounds on June 1618. Entry deadline is May 19th and you can watch ohioangus. org for entry forms. Arrival and check-ins will be on Friday with the Junior Show on Saturday and the Open Show on Sunday. There will be additional check-ins on Saturday and the show will start at noon with showmanship first. Fitting will be allowed at this show on both days. If anyone is interested in coming to the OJAA meeting during the show dates, the meeting will be on Friday at 3:00. We hope to see some new faces there! The Eastern Regional show will be held in conjunction with the All-American Breeders Futurity this year. The show will be held on June 7-11 in Louisville, Kentucky. Ownership deadline and entries are due on May 1st. We are excited to see our Ohio Youth participating in this show! The 2017 LEAD conference will be a very exciting one held in Raleigh, North Carolina! This is a great opportunity for the older OJAA members to meet with other NJAA members and bond over their love for the Angus breed while exploring leadership, communication, and agriculture in the different parts of the United States. LEAD is for members who are 14 as of January 1, 2017. The entry deadline is June 15, 2017 and the cost is $250.00 for junior members. There are quite a few members from Ohio planning on going already and we hope to see even more interest as the time gets closer! In the greenbooks that all NJAA members get in the spring, there are some pages covering rule changes that have been made this year. Please take a look at those pages and read the rules carefully if you’re planning on going to and NJAA shows this summer! As you can see, there are quite a few amazing opportunities for the members of the OJAA this summer and we look forward to seeing new faces and getting the youth involved in our organization!
