Hopefully everyone has been to take full advantage of the wetter then normal summer we have been having, and are looking good going into fall grazing. If you weren’t able to make it down to the Ohio State Fair, the Angus Shows were a huge success with cattle being exhibited by 45 exhibitors for Ohio & Indiana. Ryan Rathmann, Lubbock, TX evaluated the Open Show while, Parker Henley, Champaign, IL judged the Junior Show. Show results photos from the Ohio State Fair are included in this months newsletter. The Buckeye Best of Both Worlds Sale -Volume 6 is to be held on November 18th. Any one interested in consigning cattle to the sale needs to complete the consignment form available at www.buckeyebbw.com by September 15th. If you have any questions regarding the sale or potential consignments, please give me a call. Industry News & Notes Angus University at the 2017 Angus Convention Brings Beef Industry Experts
Ed Hendee, Taste of Texas restaurateur, and CattleFax CEO Randy Blach will headline as Angus University guest speakers.
The 2017 Angus Convention offers a tremendous lineup of speakers and workshops for the fourth annual Angus University on Sunday, Nov. 5, sponsored by Merck Animal Health. “Every year, we’re excited to bring in a diverse set of beef industry experts to share valuable information with attendees at Angus University,” says Clint Mefford, Director of Communications at the American Angus Association. “2017 promises to be the best yet, focusing on topics that are important to cattlemen and their operations.” The Angus University general session features two outstanding keynote speakers: Ed Hendee, owner of the famous Taste of Texas restaurant, and Randy Blach, CattleFax CEO. Hendee and his wife, Nina, own and operate the renowned Taste of Texas restaurant in Houston, which launched in 1977. The restaurant has gained local and national acclaim for setting the standard of steakhouse excellence and its consummate Texas hospitality. In 1984, Hendee embraced Certified Angus Beef® and doubled the restaurant’s sales in three years, ensuring its survival. In 1991, the Hendees constructed their own building, leading to a 300-seat hotspot and growing fame as today’s top volume, independent restaurant in the world for Certified Angus Beef®. The restaurant is truly a family business. The Hendees’ daughter, Lisa, is the chef, while their daughter, Kristin, and her husband, Corbin, help manage the business. Blach was raised on his family’s ranch in Yuma, Colo., and graduated from Colorado State University (CSU) with an animal science degree. He received the CSU College of Agricultural Sciences Honor Alumni Award in 2004 and the 2011 Livestock Leader Award. Last year, Blach was inducted into the Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame. He joined CattleFax in 1981 and served as director of market analysis for 15 years, accepting his current role as CEO in 2001. Blach and his family remain actively involved in cattle ranching by managing cow/calf, stocker and finished cattle. The afternoon breakout sessions will discuss key beef industry topics, including bull and heifer selection; managing consumer demands and environmental regulations; EPDs; current consumer beef trends; parasite management; low stress cattle handling; and more. Angus Convention Giving Away Two Incredible Grand Prizes
Grand prizes are a must-see at the American Angus Association’s annual convention, Nov. 4-6 in Fort Worth, Texas. Attendees at the 2017 Angus Convention will have the chance to win one of two terrific grand prizes: a complete cattle handling system from Priefert and Tru-Test and a customized Angus Cat 289 compact track loader from Caterpillar. “These grand prizes would be a terrific addition to any Angus breeder’s operation,” says Becky Weishaar, Creative Media director with Angus Media. “This year’s grand prize sponsors — Priefert, Tru-Test and Caterpillar — have all outdone themselves, and we are so thankful for their generosity.” Priefert and Tru-Test have generously donated a complete cattle handling system designed for 35 head. The corral features a solid sweep with a straight working alley that’s adjustable to one of four widths, leading to a Priefert Model S04 squeeze chute. To complete the system, Tru-Test has added the Tru-Test XR5000 Indicator, HD1010 load bars, scale mounting brackets and XRS2 eID stick reader. In addition, Tru-Test has provided a brand new WaterWell automatic waterer that can accommodate up to 100 head. Caterpillar has donated a custom Cat 289D compact track loader that’s tailored with black paint and Angus detailing. The Cat 289D will allow the winner the versatility to multitask with ease, including moving bales, cleaning pens, mixing feed and more. The multi-function machine will help maximize productivity with outstanding power from a comfortable cab. The grand prize drawing will occur on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. Attendees must be present to win the grand prizes. Industry News & Notes Ohio Couple Inducted into Honorary Angus Foundation
Paul and Lynn Hill, Bidwell, Ohio, were recognized as 2017 Honorary Angus Foundation inductees for their dedication to providing youth opportunities to succeed through the Angus Foundation.
The National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) recently recognized Paul and Lynn Hill, Champion Hill Angus, Bidwell, Ohio, as the newest inductees into the Honorary Angus Foundation at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Des Moines, Iowa. Paul is a former chairman of the Angus Foundation Board of Directors, a role he served in for four years. In addition, he was very active in raising money for the junior program and other fundraising efforts. Hill was also one of the driving forces behind hiring Angus Foundation president Milford Jenkins, and he also spearheaded the $11 million Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus. “As a stalwart advocate of the Angus Foundation over the years, Paul has played a crucial role in its recent growth and development,” says Jenkins. “In addition to being a major promoter of the Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus, Paul and Lynn have financially supported the effort personally. Paul has also helped secure financial support from numerous other Angus breeders, corporations and friends for our education, youth and research activities. The lives of countless Angus youth will forever be enriched, either directly or indirectly, as a result of Paul’s enthusiasm, passion and hard work on their behalf in tirelessly championing the need for funds for scholarships, leadership training and opportunities for them to grow and mature to lead our Angus breed, communities and country tomorrow.” Paul began his career as a herdsman for Briarhill Angus Farms in Union Springs, Ala., in 1971. Briarhill dispersed 10 years later, and Paul served as a herdsman for herds in Connecticut, South Carolina and Virginia. In 1990, Paul became herdsman for Marshall Reynolds. The two became business partners in 1993, founding Champion Hill Angus. The herd, which included 200 donor cows and 900 recipients, had a year-round breeding program to maximize the use of recipients and supply the demand for show heifers. After many successful years in the Angus business, Paul and Lynn retired in February 2017 to spend more time with their family, dispersing the Champion Hill herd. According to the American Angus Hall of Fame, the Hill’s sale, which sold 850 cattle, set a world record. The Hills’ two daughters, Sarah and Neenah, have been active lifelong members. Sarah served as 1992 Miss American Angus and served on the NJAA Board in 19931994. At the 2017 NJAS awards ceremony, the Hills were honored along with the late Terry and Pam Bailey, High Roller Angus, Center, Texas.
In 1985, the NJAA Board of Directors established the Honorary Angus Foundation to recognize and thank those who have shown incredible support of Angus youth. Seven Angus breeders were honored as the first inductees, and each year, the NJAA honors up to three individuals. Any member of the American Angus Association is eligible to nominate individuals or organizations for the Honorary Angus Foundation. A complete list of members can be found online. Ohio Family Recognized for Historic Angus Herd
Creek Side Farm has raised registered Angus cattle for 50plus years. James Rentz of Creek Side Farm in Coldwater, Ohio, is well known in the industry for his 65 years of dedication raising high-quality Angus cattle and making monumental impacts within the breed and its Association. The American Angus Association is proud to recognize Rentz as a recipient of the Historic Angus Herd award as a way to showcase his commitment to the Angus breed. This award is presented to active Angus breeders and immediate family members who have been in continuous production of registered Angus cattle for 50 or more years. Since joining the American Angus Association in 1953, Creek Side Farm has participated in shows and sales at the local, state and national level. Rentz and his wife, Judy, have three children who were active in the Ohio Junior Angus Association and successfully exhibited cattle at several National Junior Angus Shows (NJAS). He and his family have bred and exhibited multiple winners and sale topper cattle throughout the years. They were the first family to be named All-American Futurity Champion Udder Cow in 1984. Rentz also has the only Angus herd to breed and exhibit back-to-back champion carcass steers at the NJAS in 1985 and 1986. In addition to their involvement in the Angus show circuit, Rentz has held several leadership positions at the state and national level within the Association. He served as the publicity chairman and announcer during the 1984 NJAS. He was the 2001 to 2002 president of the Ohio Angus Association and a board member for more than 25 years.

Continued From Page 7 For nine years Rentz served on the Ohio Beef Council and is a former treasurer of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association. For five years he served as the president of the Mercer County Cattlemen’s Association. Rentz was also a director of the American Angus Association for two terms and served on the national board for six years. This is not the first award Rentz has received to recognize his commitment to the Angus breed. The Rentz family was the recipient of the 1994 Ohio Angus Family of the Year. The Mercer County Cattlemen’s Association named him the 1999 Mercer County Cattleman of the Year. In 2013, he was inducted into the American Angus Association’s Angus Heritage Foundation. For 14 years he served as a fieldman throughout the Midwest for the Angus Journal®. Over the years he has had a hand in establishing a number of successful businesses and events. He founded the Rentz Auction Co. in 1973, which specializes in Angus sales management and auctioneering throughout the U.S. and Canada; the well-established Showcase Sale; and was a co-founder of the Ohio Beef Expo and served as chairman and manager for its first five years. A few years ago Rentz wrote the book titled 50+ Years of Angus Trails and Tales, which highlights the dynamics of the Angus industry and how it was shaped into what it is today. The book was introduced in Louisville in 2006 and has been sold in more than 40 states and in Canada.

Vendors and information booths will be on site for participants to visit. At only $20 per individual, this is a great value compared to the cost of similar conferences.
