Ohio Angus Breeders, April is here, our warmer then normal tempatures have been well recieved, but the abundance of rain has kept things rather muddy. Hopefully you are very close to turning cows out to grass and hanging up your mud boots for another year! The the purebred cattle market has remained solid this spring considering the slight dip in the commercial markets. Many of the sales in this area has seen averages of $3,000+ Which is off from last year but very comparable or slightly higher then the 2012 & 2013 levels. If you are looking to sell please give me a call to see of the Ohio Angus Association can assist you. At the Ohio Beef Expo, the Ohio Angus Super Star was a huge success with average price of $3,439 on 52 Lots. 25 Angus bulls averaged $3,454, 5 Angus Bred heifers averaged $4,600 and 23 Open Angus females averaged $3,043. I would like to thank all the buyers and sellers for making this year’s sale such a huge success.

Industry News & Notes More Beef Exports and Less Imports Supports Beef – Derrell S. Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension -Reprinted with permission from OSU Beef Team Newsletter
U.S. beef exports continue the 2016 trend with additional improvement so far in 2017. February total beef exports were up 19.3 percent and combine with the January total for a year to date increase of 20.1 percent year over year for the first two months of the year. This extends the annual 12.6 percent year over year increase in 2016. Japan remains the top destination for U.S. beef exports, up 44.4 percent year over year for January and February. Beef exports to Japan represented 29.9 percent of beef exports so far this year. Japan accounted for 25.7 percent of total beef exports in 2016. South Korea is the second largest beef export market for the U.S., up 26.5 percent in the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2016. South Korea has had a rising share of U.S. beef exports in the last four years and represented 17.8 of total beef exports in 2016. Mexico is third largest beef export market, up 25.8 percent year over year for the year to date. Beef exports to Mexico have generally decreased in recent years but did show a year over year increase of 8.6 percent in 2016. Mexico’s share of U.S. beef exports has dropped sharply in the last few years to a 2016 level of 15.4 percent of total beef exports. Canada is the number four beef export market and is up 17.0 percent so far this year compared to the first two months of 2016. Canada’s share of beef exports has also declined some in the last five years with a 2016 share of 12.1 percent of total exports. Hong Kong has had a larger share of U.S. beef exports in the last four years but dropped from the previous year to 11.5 percent of total exports in 2016. Beef exports to Hong Kong so far in 2017 are down 23.6 percent year over year. The top five beef export markets (Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Canada and Hong Kong) represented 83.7 percent of total beef exports in the first two months of 2017, similar to the 82.6 percent share in 2016. 2017 beef exports are up year over year to all of these markets except Hong Kong. Beef imports are down 17.4 percent year over year in the first two months of 2017. This follows a 10.5 percent year over year decrease in 2016. Australia, historically the largest source of U.S. beef imports, is down 45.5 percent so far this year following a 39.0 percent year over year decrease in 2016. In fact, Australia is currently the fourth largest beef import source so far in 2017. Australia is in roughly the same relative position as the U.S. beef industry was in 2014/2015, with drought-reduced animal inventories restricting production and herd rebuilding further restricting beef production at the current time.
New Zealand is the largest beef import source so far in 2017 but is down 21.1 percent year over year, following a 7.3 percent year over year decrease in 2016. Mexico is the second largest beef import source thus far in 2017 and is up 37.2 percent year over year in the first two months of the year. Imports of Mexican beef have grown sharply in recent years, jumping 25.9 percent in 2016 and accounting for 16.4 percent of total beef imports. Canada is the third largest beef imports source, with year to date imports down 12.7 percent. After an annual year over year increase of 14.3 percent, Canada represented 23.8 percent of total beef imports in 2016. The top four import markets represented 85.9 percent of 2016 beef imports. Significantly smaller import shares include Brazil, which accounted for 5.1 percent of total imports along with 4.1 percent from Uruguay in 2016. Beef imports are largely driven by the demand for lean trimmings used in the ground beef market. On average, an estimated 72 percent of U.S. beef imports are lean trimmings.

Industry News & Notes Managing Spring Grass: Going from 0 to 60!
– Dr. Chris D. Teutsch, Associate Extension Professor, Forage Specialist, University of Kentucky -Reprinted with permission from OSU Beef Team Newsletter
Spring can often be one of the most challenging times of the year for graziers. Grass growth goes from nonexistent to excessive in a matter of weeks and in many cases grazing livestock have a hard time keeping up with it. This can result in lower quality forage that is less palatable. The growth of new forage is also delayed by not removing the growing point of our cool-season grasses. The presence of the growing point suppresses tiller formation at the base of the grass plant. The following suggestions can help you to control spring growth and get the most out of your spring pastures.
-Implement rotational grazing. In order to fully utilize the spring flush of pasture growth YOU must be in control of grazing. In a continuous grazing system, the cows are in charge. -Start grazing before you think the pastures are ready. One of the most common mistakes that graziers make is waiting too long to start grazing in the spring. If you wait until the first paddock is ready to graze, by the time you reach the last paddock it will be out of control. Starting early allows you to establish a “grazing wedge” (Figure 1).
-Increase stocking density in the spring. If it is possible, a good option for utilizing spring growth is to increase your stocking density. This will allow you to harvest more of the available forage and convert it into a saleable product. This can be done by adding some stockers or thin cull cows to your rotation and then selling them when pasture growth slows. -Even out seasonal distribution of forage by adding a warm-season grass. Adding a well-adapted warm-season grass that produces the majority of its growth in July and August would allow you to increase your season long stocking density to better utilize the spring flush of pasture growth. -Bush-hog out of control pastures. The benefits of clipping include maintaining pastures in a vegetative state, encouraging regrowth, and controlling weeds. Clipping pastures costs money, so make sure that the primary reason for bush-hogging is pasture management, not aesthetics.
There is not a one-size fits all when it comes to grazing. One of the most important features to build into your grazing system is flexibility. This will allow you to adapt as situation changes. Grazing systems are not static entities, but rather dynamic works of art that evolve as your skill level increases!
-Rotate animals rapidly. The general rule is that if grass is growing rapidly then your rotation should be rapid. This will allow you stay ahead of the grass by topping it off and keeping it in a vegetative state. -Do not apply spring nitrogen. Applying nitrogen in the spring will actually make the problem of too much grass at once even worse. In many cases you are better off to save your nitrogen for stockpiling in the fall. -Remove most productive paddocks from rotation and harvest for hay. Graze all paddocks until the pasture growth is just about to get away from you and then remove those productive paddocks from your rotation and allow them to accumulate growth for hay harvest.
Figure 1. The “grazing wedge” simply refers to having pasture subdivisions or paddocks at varying stages of regrowth from just grazed to ready to graze. For more information on grazing management contact your local extension agent or visit http://www.uky.edu/Ag/Forage/ and https://www.youtube.com/c/KYForages.
Ohio Junior Angus Association News & Notes
Join the OJAA Group!
April OJAA Article The recent meeting of the OJAA was on April 9th at 4:00 at the Ohio Cattlemen’s Office in Marysville, Ohio. At the meeting, members will discussed some important topics, plan further details of the show season and have some fun time together as a group after Beef Expo. Some of the agenda items were the upcoming NJAS, ERJAS 2017 and 2018, and the OJAA Preview Show. The 2017 NJAS will be in Des Moines, Iowa and the 2017 ERJAS will be in Louisville, Kentucky. We look forward to finalizing some plans for these shows and discussing how to make it an exciting week for everyone! The Ohio Beef Expo was held March 18-20 in Columbus, Ohio at the Ohio Expo Center. Many of the OJAA members were present with cattle to show, sell, or a willing spirit to pitch in and help with the Angus Super Star Sale. Many with all three! The Angus Super Star sale went very well as we had a lot of kids and adults helping run it smoothly, excited buyers and some very nice cattle. Cooper Arena hosted very many Angus heifers and steers Sunday morning bright and early to kick off the Junior Show the day after the sale. Along with the sale and show, some members of the 2018 ERJAS committee were able to walk around the trade show to fundraise and find sponsors to help us with the show that will be in Lima, Ohio. The members did a great job and looked great in their matching jackets while fundraising for the show. The members of the OJAA are very excited for the summer show season and we all look forward to including new members into our association. If you are eligible to join, please feel free to contact any of the members for more information. Now is a fantastic time to join our wonderful organization! Industry News & Notes Angus Juniors ‘Raise the Bar’ in Louisiana
Leadership event in Baton Rouge, La., brings together 21 junior Angus leaders Angus juniors have the opportunity to travel the country with the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and learn from knowledgeable experts in the beef cattle business. Most recently, NJAA members met March 2-5 in Baton Rouge, La., to participate in a Raising the Bar conference. “Louisiana was a fantastic backdrop for Angus juniors to experience something new, build their leadership skills and meet new friends from across the country,” says Jaclyn Clark, American Angus Association director of events and education. “Raising the Bar conferences offer NJAA members the chance to travel, learn more about agriculture and become more involved in the Angus breed.” The conference hosted 21 Angus junior leaders from 12 state junior Angus associations. Participants toured the Louisiana State University (LSU) campus, heard from industry experts, took part in leadershiptraining workshops and spent an evening watching a movie. The group also made stops at these three Angus operations: Continental Genetics, 12 Star Ranch and K Bar Ranch. Raising the Bar participants were able to experience Cajun culture and what it’s like raising Angus cattle in the southern state. While at LSU, juniors were able to tour the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Agriculture and a campus tour. Henry Hebert, manager of recruitment, helped to organize the tours and share a little glimpse into LSU academics. The juniors ended the campus trip with a tasty ice-cream treat at the LSU Dairy Store. “Our special thanks to those who made this event possible and helped offer a top-notch educational experience for our juniors,” Clark says. Now in its tenth year, Raising the Bar conferences continue to foster the development of Angus youth by hosting events in two regions across the country. The NJAA, with sponsorship from the Angus Foundation, has conducted Raising the Bar conferences in cities such as Champaign-Urbana, Ill.;
Athens, Ga.; Fayetteville, Ark.; and Sioux Falls, S.D. To learn more about how to participate in an upcoming Raising the Bar conference, visit njaa.info.

Outstanding NJAA Leadership Award
Applications for the Jim Baldridge Outstanding Leadership award due May 1.
To recognize Angus youth who exemplify what it means to be a true leader, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) presents the Jim Baldridge Outstanding Leadership Award each year at the Angus Convention. The prestigious award is based on leadership roles within the Angus business and other activities, and ways the nominee has committed to helping others develop those skills, as well. The Outstanding Leadership Award recipient will receive an award, presented by the NJAA, and a scholarship for $2,500. “The future of the American Angus Association is in the hands of its junior members in the National Junior Angus Association,” says Caitlyn Brandt, American Angus Association events and education. “The Outstanding Leadership Award is one way to recognize the business breed’s future leaders.” Applications for the Jim Baldridge Outstanding Leadership Award are available online and must be completed by May 1. Only current NJAA members who are at least 17 years old as of Jan. 1 will be considered for the award, and a selection committee formed by the NJAA Advisory Board determines winners. Applications consist of a résumé, two letters of recommendation and a written report of leadership examples. The award was established in 1998 and rededicated to Jim Baldridge in 2014, in memory of his devotion to the NJAA and leadership of the Angus breed. For more information on the award and how to apply, visit www.angus.org/njaa.
