EDITORS NOTE

Hi there! Thanks for making your way to Issue 3 of Dwelling Art Magazine. If you’re new here, my name is Danielle and I am the creator and editor of this magazine. I am a uni student, studying a Bachelor of Creative Writing, and I have created this magazine to give artists the opportunity to share their art and engage in a supportive community, but this magazine also keeps me on the edge of my seat, forcing me to create outside of my comfort zone and keeps me accountable of deadlines. I love art and I love helping other artists, so I really wanted to create this space to meet new people and make artist friends! There’s lots to share inside the art world, and with the pressure of social media, I know how difficult it can be to want to find your voice in a very large sea of thriving artists. I hope that I can provide a safe space for you, my fellow artist, the beginner artist, or the experienced artist, where you can take a deep breath and connect with other artists, whilst sharing your own art and be apart of a supportive community. Everyone is welcome here, and I believe that every artists and author has the power within them to create inspiring, unique, and amazing art, regardless of if you’re just at the beginning of your journey, or you have been making art for over ten years. Your art does not need to be perfect, just as long as you are making art for yourself, and making art that feels true to you. A special thank you to @dancingstatic and @ sol_pheonix_mani for helping me create Issue 3, thank you to @katemathewson.art for all your kind words since the delay of Issue 3 in June, and thank you to everyone who supported me throughout the year and stuck by me since Issue 1. I appreciate every single one of you! All my love and support, turn me sideways to view me in landscape

FEATURED ARTIST

KATE MATHEWSON - ONE PORTRAIT A DAY FOR 365 DAYS

3

Kate Mathewson has been creating one portrait a day since the 22nd January 2021, which means she’s almost completed her goal of completing one portrait every day for a whole year! Mathewson submitted a few artworks to Issue 2, but I’ve been following along her journey since the beginning of 2021. I think she deserves a feature in Dwelling to commend her for her hard work and the amazing progress made in her art. Keep an eye out for each of her artworks trickled throughout the magazine! Since the start of her challenge, Kate Mathewson says she has noticed a lot more confidence and experimentation in her work, saying she has pushed her artistic boundaries. She also finds that if it weren’t for other artists, inspiration wouldn’t come, so she lets herself use other artist’s techniques to create something new, and loves to see how artists can interpret other artist’s pieces, also emphasising the importance of needing to learn from others. Kate also falls back on her roots from school, pulling out old techniques and mediums to keep her motivated. Breaking away from her normal style and playing around with new techniques is key to not getting bored of her everyday portraits, but there’s also a power in letting go of the process and just letting the art create itself, she begins with a vague plan and they do the rest, which she loves because it makes her relationship with her art feel more connected. Now that she is nearing the end of her portrait a day challenge, Kate reminds me that she feels as though her art has definitely, without a doubt, improved each day she has created a portrait. Find her on instagram to see her progress and follow along her journey: @katemathewson.art

RECOMMENDED ARTIST For a majority of 2021, whislt I studied, worked on Dwelling Art Magazine, and sat down to write and make art, I’ve kept myself calm and focused with chill lofi beats, but the one artist I’ve always had on repeat is Elijah Nang. Elijah Nang is an Audio Novelist and Beat Therapist, composing stories through relaxing lofi beats, inspired by East Asian instruments and Japanese culture. His most popular Audio Novel is Gaijin, meaning foreigner in Japanese, and is an album curated to follow the journey of a foreigner waking up to find himself in a land covered in mist, and he soon finds out that he is in The Land of the Samurai.

6 While you listen, you’ll find yourself travelling to a distant land, enamoured by comforting sounds and a unique story. Elijah has also published two photobooks called Lost in Japan, both a collection of photographs from his 2019 trip to Japan. In one, every photo is black and white, creating a moody and emotional series of photos, capturing the daily life of people in Japan’s city scenes. The second features a lively and interactive city life in Japan, edited to emphasise the colourful culture in Japan. Elijah uses a Fujifilm X-T3 Digital Camera to

capture his photos, and is inspired by Joshua K. Jackson, Liam Wong, Tatsuo Suzuki and Fan Ho. Elijah Nang does a wonderful job at capturing the feeling of Japanese culture in his photo collections, and his chill lofi beats are a geat source for keeping you focused during a stressful time, I know it sure has kept me sane through a stressful year, and being lucky enough to lay eyes on his art makes me feel nostalgic, as I too am a big fan of Japanese culture and life. If you’re looking to purchase his photobooks, head to his instagram: @elijahnang And listen to his music on spotify or youtube: Elijah Nang

LET OUT SOME OF THAT STUFF INSIDE

If you’re feeling blocked or need to move to the next stage in your artistic creation, Riversong has suggested to follow these steps to help you get out of your art block: Step 1 - Choose a piece of paper Step 2 - Cut out an image that shows how you feel today Step 3 - Stick it on the paper Step 4 - Create your own scene around the image about how you would like to feel, be or are. Step 5 - Share your creation with a trusted friend/worker if you want to A simple, yet powerful exercise to warm up your artistic hands.

The Sun, the Moon & the Stars

There’s something so calming about watching the stars Staring through space and squinting at Mars Something so beautiful about the moon That makes people want to turn and swoon It’s not perfect or flawless It’s got craters after all But it’s so full of love It even makes hearts grow And I know you might say the moon’s out every night It’s not like it’ll float away with the clouds There’s something so special about the night sky That makes you feel loved and enough Although the sun is big and bright I somehow feel safer out late at night It might be because A long time ago The sun loved the moon with burning fuel And the moon gave the sun all of its love Until something came and tore them apart But to this day The sun loves the moon So it shines the light into its eyes So maybe that’s why, from afar You see the moon longing for its only love Yet through the gloom, You see its heart Hurting but loving And you understand So maybe that’s why, The night feels so nice.

Garrett Ashe Modern Day Magic is Garrett Ashe’s first published book of poetry, it is a ‘collection of poetry about the eternal magic that exists below the surface in modern day society. It is a dreamlike journey through the various shades of human emotion that we all experience.’ Ashe is a storyteller, and wanted the collection of poems to have more depth, whilst also making the poetry approachable for all readers, so with micro-poems he has created a cohesive story, dividing each part into six chapters, taking the reader from Love to Loveless, through Loss and Fear and back to Hope, then guides the reader all the way back to the Present. There are so many layers, and so much emotion and thought to pull apart in his words - and he really puts the ‘modern’ in Modern Day Magic, with references to Alexa, the ‘Modern Day Cookbook’, and even a special featurette to the pandemic! Alongside his writing, Garrett Ashe gives artists a safe space to connect and feel seen in the online world, so make sure to follow him everywhere, support his work, and find a place where you feel you can share your art and be appreciated. tiktok: @garrett.ashe instagram: @garrett.ashe_ patreon: GarrettAshe

A poet, an author, and an artist; all at once, Garrett Ashe has mastered his creation.

rn Day gic

Ashe emphasises the importance of artist collaboration by touching on how both he and the illustrators helped lift each other up in the creative process, and the part I love most about Modern Day Magic - there are 15 artist’s illustrations featured throughout! Here is the list of artists you will see when you open this book: Sina Shagrai Saweilly (Sally Chou) Hafsa Seddiqi Bruna Marinelli Katja Scheil Diana Carbajal (Ilusqui) Lost Colours (Melinda Markus) Helena Erlach Leah Grace Shiruhi Georgina Vowles Katelyn Kutt Sadgi Chandra Grant Kibler NinnyArt Amanda Del Grosso

Whilst you read Ashe’s poems, you will come to understand the passion that ignites his work, so let his micropoems transport you to a world of Modern Day Magic. AUTHOR’S BIO Garrett Ashe is an American author and poet who’s self-described goal is to make readers fall in love with the magic of imagination. From the moment Garrett learned to put his words on paper, he was storytelling. He creates because he is compelled by the power of expression. He writes because he is enamored with the depths of human truth. And he captures a little piece of that humanity in every piece that he pens. Garrett recently published his debut poetry book, Modern Day Magic, in which he takes readers on a dreamlike journey through the magic that hides just beneath the surface every day of our lives in Modern Day society. He was previously published in “My Still Waters” (edited by Austie M. Baird,) as well as “Volition Journal of Literature and Arts” and various other magazines and anthologies.

Bird of the East Chapter 2

At times, she was tired of trying to survive. The sunlight bore raucous scabs on her skin. She felt as though her eyes would be burnt permanently white if she left them open too long, and she was chained up under wooden planks, generous of cracks and scorched with the symbols of her Sun and His brother planets, harsh light glaring through. The girl prayed as soon as she saw the symbol of the Sun, reaching out to get as close to the carvings as she can in her shackles, the prayer was silent but her lips moved with vigour. But then it felt hopeless trying to pray to a god that never answered her. Kyira, the Princess of Bird Song, kept her eyes closed and wandered back to the place she lived in her mind, cradled by warmth above her eyelids and surrounded by floating dust bits that still travelled behind the darkness of her eyelids. She roamed into a hassled part of her mind that was tired of living, exhausted from the treacherous journey of thunder and waves in a damp cell beneath a cargo ship. Her mind travelled in circles and guided her thoughts to a useless state, she thought less of her weak body and was on a constant tangent of reasons as to why she should end the King’s life for good. Even though she was unable to stand on her feet, she cared more on what she would do to take revenge on her father’s actions, and she promised herself she would find her way back, she tried so hard to focus but nothing could be concluded, she lingered on all the wrong thoughts. She was not fit to take down her father, her powers had weakened, and her body was dull. She needed to get off this ship and eat a proper meal, she needed her powers strengthened, she needed a real teacher for her newfound abilities, and then she could formulate the right steps to success. She was brought back to the present when suddenly her quiet company groaned in the shadows, long limbs shifting the scattered hay. Like a pirate, she thought, they must have had a limb cut off and replaced with a wooden forearm, or two. As they moved from out of the darkness, exposing itself to the light, this truly left Kyira in amazement, to be the one witnessing this creature with her own barely conscious mind. This was a creature of witchcraft, crafted with trees and spells, used for farming, healing, protecting. This was just like the wooden elves Kyira had seen in her history books hand drawn by the Late Scholars. The long limbed being was worn and its paint textured with time. It leaned forth to Kyira and gestured for her hand, she obliged, and the spellbound creature was gentle, and warm in its touch as it carried the weight of her arm. She was heated from the inside, like she was warmed by a comforting soup, and this finally called her to the 23

present, she knew this wasn’t a dream despite the haze that glowed around the two of them in their musty cell. The creature was calm as it spoke, without a movement to its face, it was careful with its tone, ‘You have fire burning inside you.’ Kyira was unable to respond, she knew what the wooden elf meant, but she didn’t understand how they knew such a thing. The creature kept hold of her hand, and Kyira asked, ‘What are you? I mean, how are you still alive? Elves like you were wiped out decades ago.’ The elf was still carefully inspecting her forearm, it was as if the being was too engrossed by her arm to answer. Instead, it reiterated, ‘You have fire swimming inside you.’ She pulled herself back, afraid of what she could conjure, but the elf looked at her in her eyes and reached to touch her face. ‘What are you doing?’ The princess jutted back so the elf could not touch her. Nothing more was said between them, so the creature shifted back to its shadowed corner. Then at once, pirates of the ship charged through their prison doors, two detaching Kyira’s and the creature’s shackles from the floor, keeping her hands bound, and several others formed a firm grip around her arms. A deep coarse voice yelled overtop the men, ‘Hold their hands behind their backs and don’t let go. These ones are dangerous and we’re collecting our plentiful bounty from the Fire Lord himself.’ Kyira couldn’t see him behind all the stinky pirates in the cabin, and he continued, ‘All right, men, let’s go.’ They shoved the Princess out and up a slimy board, she was lightheaded from the abrupt movement, and tripped over her feet. The pirates cooed and yelped, laughing at her fall, and she felt embarrassed, glaring right back at them. The sunlight was even harsher above her prison cell, and she was squinting to see what was reaching across the horizon. A young pirate stepped forward with a cocky bounce in his step, ‘And that my friends, is what we call the Land of the Dragon’s Sun.’ Bird of the East (previously named Bird of the West) is a story written by me, Danielle, to help me gain confidence in my writing skills. I can’t help but imagine this fantasy world inside my head, and with the help of this magazine, I’m finally sitting down to transpose it into words. This is a re-writing of Chapter 2, as seen in Dwelling: Issue 2.

To be continued...

The electrical life of LOUIS WAIN a movie review

Surrounded by golden light, a man stumbles into view carrying baggage over his shoulders on a train, sketches in hand. The artist makes his way into the world, if somewhat idealistically, but he is simply just a genius at work. Portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, he plays a fool, beaten in boxing before a job interview, drawing with both hands simultaneously, a man having an incredible passion for animals, The electrical life of Louis Wain follows the true story of Louis Wain’s journey to fame in the art world. This biopic portrays keenly the aspects of grief, loss, mental instability and stigma in a cruel, patriarchal society of the late

19th Century. Using lighting and dark sets, music to match an incredible yet sometimes comedic act, we are drawn into Wain’s world so excellently. As an artist you might see this movie as an escape, drawing deeply from Wain’s creative prowess and may care attitude. As a writer the world of words grows deep within, pulsing from your fingertips onto the page, as the dialogue between his friends and family will entice your senses. As actors, directors and all who endeavour to create theatre or film, join Wain on a journey as he paints a picture of an imaginative landscape.

Being a creative therapist, I can’t help but read between the lines of all my learnings - seeing, feeling, wanting to know more of this character Wain and his deeply curious brain. As I watched intently I saw a man out of time with the world in which he lived. It is something mystical, mysterious, intriguing, and enticing, almost Dr Parnassus-esque era. At two hours I wouldn’t be watching again in a hurry. It’s a bit like taking acid and walking barefoot across the car park on a scorching summers day until you finally reach that patch of grass then have to wait for traffic to subside, so you can race to the other side only to have to deal with concrete on your soft precious toes. - Riversong (Creative Azure) Submit your movie review to Danielle at dwellingartmagazine@outlook.com

IMAGINATION It is the dominant faculty in man, master of error and falsehood. . . I am not speaking of fools, but of the wisest men, amongst whom imagination is best entitled to persuade. Reason may object in vain, it cannot fix the price of things. This arrogant force, which checks and dominates its enemy, reason, for the pleasure of showing off the power it has in every sphere, has established a second nature in man. Imagination has its happy and unhappy men, it’s sick and well, its rich and poor; it makes us believe, doubt, deny reason; it deadens the senses, it arouses them; it has its fools and sages. . . Imagination decides everything: it creates beauty, justice and happiness, which is the world’s supreme good.
