Message from the President I am honoured and delighted to welcome new students for the 2014/15 Academic Year.

You have made an excellent choice by choosing Jamaica’s premier national University as your place to proceed on your lifelong path to “Excellence through Knowledge.”

You have entered an institution that is student-centred in focus, where each student is provided with the opportunity to learn, grow, develop, and reach his/her full potential as a valued member of the UTech community, the nation and the global workforce. It is with this in mind that our students have the opportunity to pursue studies in a variety of programmes relevant to the demands of an increasingly competitive knowledge-based economy.

Your University is built on the pillars of scholarship, research and service and as such our primary mission is “to stimulate positive change in Caribbean society through provision of high quality learning and research opportunities and services to our communities.” The University is committed to this mission and I invite you to be actively involved in that journey during your UTech tenure.

The University continues to grow and develop exponentially and now has eight (8) academic units comprising three (3) colleges and five (5) faculties and the UTech Academy which provides pre-university access through various course delivery modalities, as well as continuing education and professional development programmes.

In its fifty-six (56) year history, this institution has played a major role in every facet of national development. I am privileged to have been part of that history and I continue to have a vested personal interest in the preservation of the traditions and the ongoing developments that will ensure UTech earns its place as a world class centre of learning and excellence.

Our graduates are well known for their work-readiness and the value they add to organizations wherever they go in the World. I implore you to hold this tradition sacred and to build on it as you pursue your academic goals and prepare yourselves to be leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators. As you pursue your goals, be mindful always of UTech’s Core Values of Respect, Integrity, Excellence, Innovation, Team Spirit, Accountability and Service.

As tertiary level students, you will determine your own success. I implore you to take a responsible approach to your education from the very beginning of your course of study so that you will reap the full benefits of the privilege of acquiring a world class tertiary educational experience. I encourage you to read widely, focus keenly on your academic goals and explore all avenues that will challenge you to think incisively, creatively and independently.

Additionally, you should seek to become involved in campus life, as the experiences that you gain from that exposure will help to make you a more rounded individual. Do ensure that you participate in cultural and sporting activities, student clubs and societies, as well as volunteerism and community service.

Message from the Registrar It is with pleasure and appreciation that I welcome you, new and transfer students, to UTech’s ‘Orientation 2014’ in Kingston, and at the Western Campus. To our new students, we applaud your decision to make the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) the institution of choice in your pursuit of academic excellence in higher education. And, to our transfer students, we look forward to receiving you and to your continuing your studies with robust enthusiasm!

The theme of this year’s Orientation Week is, “Embracing UTech’s Core Values”. This theme embraces the standards by which we hold ourselves accountable as we serve you our students and all stakeholders. Our core values are embodied in a seven point star, which describes each of these values: Service, Team spirit, Accountability, Respect, Innovation, Excellence and Integrity.

We know this journey will mean different things to each of you as you transition into university life. Some of you will be living away from home for the first time. This will be a big step for both you and your family, so we have arranged special sessions also for your parents, guardians and spouses as a part of this week of activities.

We start your experience at UTech by introducing you during Orientation Week to the services that we will provide you; to the persons with whom you will interact in the various areas; and to the places that you will need to know both inside and outside of the campuses. This we do recognizing that the University represents a diverse community, and as incoming students you will add to this diversity, which we recognize and value. The orientation programme offers varied activities, including sessions that will focus on special groups, such as advanced placed students, international students, students with special needs and resident students.

Among these activities we are emphasizing the importance of your engagement in academic advisement. A number of advisement sessions are planned during the week, but we want to stress the need for you to work closely with the academic advisors in your College or Faculty to receive guidance and information throughout the Academic Year.

The Graduate and Undergraduate Student Handbooks are also available to support you as you take responsibility for your studentship while at UTech.

The University’s “First Year Experience Programme” is another of our great programmes to assist you to navigate successfully through social interaction. I encourage you to join this programme.

Message from the Principal (acting) Welcome to all our new, transferring and returning students and all categories of staff to the University of Technology, Jamaica, Western Campus!

The new academic year brings excitement for staff and students alike albeit for different reasons. I look forward to the buzz of activities on the university campus that usually comes with a new year, new students and with new and renewed expectations.

I warmly welcome all students to start or continue to pursue their academic activities on the Dome Street Site in Montego Bay, the primary home of the UTech in Western Jamaica.

Enjoy the year old ‘new’ facilities and get on with the business of learning, growing and maturing as you move towards your academic goals. To our prospective nurses who will be housed at our Barnett Clinic site, I want to welcome and congratulate you on taking this very important step towards nation building. I look forward to you all integrating and collaborating as different sites but one campus.

I also welcome our UTech Academy students and staff at the Trelawny Multipurpose Stadium in Falmouth, The Simmonds Plaza in Ocho Rios as well as our community of learners and instructors at RuFamSo in May Pen and Papine and, JIM on Hope Road in Kingston.

With the new academic year comes bold new expectations from all stakeholders. The University leadership team anticipated and has sought to address many of the expressed needs. Where there are gaps, I continue to listen and take notes and will work within the limits of budgets and other restricted resources to continue to make the Western Campus a more fully resourced university campus for all users in the shortest possible time. More details will be shared during the Orientation activity.

As you continue to make the most of your university experience, please remember to come with focus and the determination to temper this experience with the opportunities to make friends and engage fully in personal and social developmental activities. I implore you to use every chance you get to make the academic year memorable, enriched, productive, pleasant, and safe.

Utech Medical Centre MEDICAL CENTRE The Medical Centre continues to provide quality health care to the University Community. The team of health care professionals is multidisciplinary and the following services are offered: • Counselling • Environmental Health • Family Planning • General Medicine • Medical Laboratory • Referrals OPENING HOURS: Monday–Friday: Saturday:

MEDICAL LABORATORY SERVICES Services are available on weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Results of routine laboratory tests are usually available within 24 hours.

EMERGENCY SERVICES Persons with life-threatening emergencies who visit the Health Centre receive supportive care and are then transferred via ambulance to the Accident & Emergency Department of the University Hospital of the West Indies.

ACCESSING MEDICAL SERVICES All users of the Medical Centre are required to make an appointment using the Online Health Centre System (OHCS) for non-emergency care. You can now reduce your wait time and schedule your appointments from home. Visit the UTech website at www.utech.edu.jm and select the OHCS link from the useful links (top right) section. Your health insurance and student identification cards are necessary for each visit.

STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN All registered students are provided with a health insurance card which may be used at any health care provider. Please note that some providers only accept cash/debit/credit cards as payments. If this occurs, ask for a signed receipt in order to make a claim against the health insurance provider. There is a cost for services not covered by the health insurance plan; however no cash is collected at the Medical Centre.

The Financial Aid Office The Financial Aid Office assists students with all aspects of financial planning for their tertiary education. Students are advised to budget not only for tuition fees but also for other expenses such as accommodation, meals, books, special equipment and projects. The Six Point Plan outlined below, recommends the following sources for accessing funds to support tuition and other school related expenses: • Private resources • Students Loan Bureau scheme (Applications accepted January –April) • Employer support • Scholarships and Bursaries • Earn & Study (campus employment) • Financial Aid Grants The Financial Aid Office administers the Scholarships and Bursaries, Earn and Study and Financial Aid Grants Programmes. It also plays a proactive role in identifying other sources of funding for students who are financially challenged.

CAMPUS SECURITY TIPS • Wear your UTech Student ID at ALL TIMES.

• Respect the security officers. They are placed here to serve and protect you from harm.

• Trust your instincts. If you get a bad “vibe” from someone, put some distance between yourself and the person.

• Be aware of your surroundings at times when you may be less alert and more vulnerable to an attack, e.g., during exams, when you are upset, sick, or tired.

• Use discretion and caution when taking shortcuts through isolated parts of the campus. Utilize the Safety and Security’s campus escort service.

• Report all incidents or “CLOSE CALLS” to the Safety and Security Department.

• Do not leave your valuables unattended.

• Ensure that your car doors and windows are closed upon exiting your vehicle.

• Be discreet with cash.

• Avoid using an ATM at night. If you must use an ATM at night, ask someone to accompany you.

• Check around the ATM first to ensure that no one is lurking in the shadows.

STUDENTS’ UNION COUNCIL 2014-2015

Student governance is vital for any institution to have an effective framework. The University of Technology, Jamaica Students’ Union Council has the responsibility of managing the welfare of students’ social, spiritual, and academic life. This task is undertaken in the Council’s effort “To Serve and To Represent” the student populace and the “Students’ Union” which consists of all registered students of the University of Technology, Jamaica. The Students’ Union Council is the representational body and consists of both elected and appointed members.

The Board of Executives consists of the President and five other members of Council. The executive body overseas all other boards namely the Board of Representatives, the Board of Directors, the Advisors and the Students’ Union Western Sub Council.

Mission, Aims & Objectives (Article II*) Section 1. The Mission of the Students’ Union is: To effectively serve and protect the rights of students, promoting their academic, social, cultural, spiritual and physical development, while fostering relations with the wider community.

Section 2. The aims and objectives of the Students’ Union shall be to (as stipulated in the statute XVIII of the University of Technology Act No. 27/1999): • promote the interests of the students and represent them in all matters affecting their interest; • afford a recognized means of communication between the students and the authorities of the University; • provide a variety of services to enhance student life; • promote social intercourse and unity of sprit and feeling among the students; • bring the students into closer relations with the students of other universities and institutions of higher and further education.

The Students’ Union Welfare and Services The Students’ Union Council organizes numerous activities geared towards benefiting our populace. These activities include: Students’ Union Services: 1. Document Printing – offered to students at competitive prices.

2. Photocopying – offered at different rates, according to paper type and colour.

3. Facsimile services – offered to students at competitive prices 4. Binding 5. Scanning 6. Coffee Machine- coffee is sold at a highly subsidized cost Welfare Services: 1. Scholarships & Bursaries A number of grants and bursaries are distributed throughout the year.

The Vice President, Student Services operates this programme, for students who apply and meet the basic criteria of need.

2. Love Lunch This is a programme through which the Students’ Union subsidizes the cost of lunches. Tickets are obtained only through an application process at the Students’ Union Office between 10:00 AM. and 12:00 noon daily. This ticket is tenable at the listed food outlets, at a subsidized cost at the value of a small lunch 3. Love Bus (Transportation) Service Love Bus Shuttle services are provided between the campuses and major transport terminals at a highly subsidized cost.

4. Laundromat Wash and dry clothes on campus by purchasing tokens for the washers and dryers daily at the Students’ Union Business office between the hours of 8:30 am to 5:00pm.

Community Outreach Services: The Students’ Union believes that “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” (Mahatma Ghandi), thus, the Union has endeavoured to organise activities that not only benefit students, but also our immediate surroundings, and the wider society. UTech Knights “HOME OF WORLD CLASS ATHLETES”

The Department of Sports provides a wide array of sporting programs for students and staff. As an integral part of our students’ educational experience, they may compete in intramural and intercollegiate competitions as well as national and international competitions.

Our competitive programs include: Semester One SEMESTER TWO Football (male & female) Basketball (female) Basketball (male) Cricket (male) Netball (female) Volleyball (male & female) Badminton (male & female) Track & Field (male & female) Table Tennis (male & female) Hockey (male & female) Tennis (male & female) Golf (male & female) Rugby (male) Central to the sport facilities is an auditorium boasting 600 sq. ft of sprung timber stage floor and seating capacity for 1,100 persons, inclusive of a balcony with 227 permanently tiered seating. Other facilities include a half Olympic size swimming pool, squash court, football field, a cricket pavilion, a gym equipped for weight training, two lawn tennis courts and an outdoor multipurpose court.

Intercollegiate Competition UTech, Jamaica is a member of the Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Association (Intercol) and serves as the secretariat. Intercol is the governing body for intercollegiate level Sports.

The University therefore competes with over nineteen (19) other universities and colleges across the island including: the University of the West Indies, Knox Community College, Northern Caribbean University, Shortwood Teachers’ College, G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport, Jamaica Maritime Institute, Mico University College among others.

Intra Departmental Competition Students have the opportunity to interact and have fun with different students within and outside their Faculty through participation in Intra departmental competitions organized by the Students’ Union Council.

National, Regional and International Competition Members of the University athletic teams also participate in a number of other competitions and tournaments at the club, national, regional and international levels.
