The Medical Centre continues to provide quality health care to the University Community. The team of health care professionals is multidisciplinary and the following services are offered: • Counselling • Environmental Health • Family Planning • General Medicine • Medical Laboratory • Referrals

MEDICAL LABORATORY SERVICES

Services are available on weekdays between the hours of 08:00 AM and 03:30 PM. Results of routine laboratory tests are usually available within 24 hours.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

Persons with life-threatening emergencies who visit the Health Centre receive supportive care and are then transferred via ambulance to the Accident & Emergency Department of the University Hospital of the West Indies.

ACCESSING MEDICAL SERVICES

All users of the Medical Centre are required to make an appointment using the Online Health Centre System (OHCS) for non-emergency care. You can now reduce your wait time by scheduling your appointments from home. Visit the UTech website at www.utech.edu.jm and select the OHCS link from the useful links (top right) section.

Your health insurance and student identification cards are necessary for each visit.

STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

All registered students are provided with a health insurance card which may be used at any health care provider. Please note that some providers only accept cash/ debit/credit cards as payments. If this occurs, ask for a signed receipt in order to make a claim against the health insurance provider.

There is a cost for services not covered by the health insurance plan; however no cash is collected at the Medical Centre.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS TO ACCESS AND PARTICIPATE IN CLINICAL ROTATIONS All students enrolled in health and allied health courses of study who are required to participate in clinical rotations within areas of the Ministry of Health must be fully immunized.

Access to clinical sites will only be granted if immunization is current and covers the period of rotation.

All students to whom this applies must have Mantoux test performed and results forwarded to the Medical Centre. This can be done at the National Chest Hospital, Barbican Road, Kingston 6 and at the St James Type 5 Health Centre, Creek Street, Montego Bay.

MEDICALS FOR NEW STUDENTS

All students being enrolled for the first time are required to complete a medical form and submit to the Medical Centre. The receipt that is received after submission of the medical form is used to obtain the student identification card.

THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE The Financial Aid Office assists students with all aspects of financial planning for their tertiary education. Students are advised to budget not only for tuition fees but also for other expenses such as accommodation, meals, books, special equipment and projects. The Six Point Plan outlined below, recommends the following sources for accessing funds to support tuition and other school related expenses: • Private resources • Students Loan Bureau scheme (Applications accepted January –April) • Employer support • Scholarships and Bursaries • Earn & Study (campus employment) • Financial Aid Grants The Financial Aid Office administers the Scholarships and Bursaries, Earn and Study and Financial Aid Grants Programmes. It also plays a proactive role in identifying other sources of funding for students who are financially challenged.

CAMPUS SECURITY TIPS FROM THE DIVISION OF SAFETY & SECURITY

• Wear your Student ID at ALL TIMES.

• Respect the security officers. They are placed here to serve and protect you from harm.

•

Trust your instincts. If you get a bad “vibe” from someone, put some distance between yourself and the person.

•

Be aware of your surroundings at times when you may be less alert and more vulnerable to an attack, e.g., during exams, when you are upset, sick, or tired.

•

Use discretion and caution when taking shortcuts through isolated parts of the campus. Utilize the Safety and Security campus escort service.

•

Report all incidents or “CLOSE CALLS” to the Safety and Security Department.

•

Do not leave your valuables unattended.

•

Ensure that your car doors and windows are closed upon exiting your vehicle.

•

Be discreet with cash.

•

Avoid using an ATM at night. If you must use an ATM at night, ask someone to ccompany you.

•

Check around the ATM first to ensure that no one is lurking in the shadows.

•

The Safety and Security Department is situated to the left of the Administration building’s main entrance. The Department can be contacted at extensions 3221 or 3551.

UTech, Ja. Knights “HOME OF WORLD CLASS ATHLETES” The Department of Sport provides a wide array of sporting programs for students and staff.

As an integral part of our students’ educational experience, they may compete in intramural and intercollegiate competitions as well as national and international competitions.

Other facilities include a half Olympic size swimming pool, squash court, football field, a cricket pavilion, a gym equipped for weight training, two lawn tennis courts and an outdoor multipurpose court.

INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITION UTech, Ja. is a member of the Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Association (Intercol) and serves as the secretariat. Intercol is the governing body for intercollegiate level sports. The University therefore competes with over nineteen (19) other universities and colleges across the island including: the University of the West Indies, Knox Community College, Northern Caribbean University, Shortwood Teachers’ College, G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport, Jamaica Maritime Institute, Mico University College among others.

INTRA DEPARTMENTAL COMPETITION Students have the opportunity to interact and have fun with students within and outside their Faculty through participation in intra and inter departmental competitions organized by the Students’ Union Council.

NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Members of the University athletic teams also participate in a number of competitions and tournaments at the club, national, regional and international levels.
