Dear Student Leader: Welcome to the fifteenth Annual Student Leaders’ Conference. Our theme this year is “Leaders for National Transformation: No Compromise”. This prestigious programme is geared towards preparing the University’s student leaders, as well as those holding leadership positions on the Halls of Residence.

As one of the leading institutions in the region, we believe it is our responsibility to train and empower our students to become effective world class leaders. Our aim therefore, is to continue to develop in students a working knowledge of the policies and procedures that guide the University; along with equipping student leaders with leadership and entrepreneurial skills that are deemed necessary for effective leadership in our nation.

It is our expectation that you maintain an open mind, a cooperative spirit and willingness to learn all that you can, in order to be the leader you were created to be.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

Track 1.

• Expose student leaders to government and the political system

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE • Promote an awareness of and develop a connection to the National Youth Policy • Inculcate the practices of good governance

OUTCOMES: Student leaders will be able to demonstrate: • Familiarity with and sensitivity to the National Youth Policy • Best practices in good management and governance Track 2.

• To develop/ reinforce and improve students character

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE • Raise an awareness toward holistic wellness and civic responsibility • Present to students best practices that reflect a high standard of ethics and integrity • Expose student leaders to various personality types and leadership styles • Train students to exhibit correct business etiquette • Enhance student leaders personal grooming skills • Encourage an appreciation of human diversity

Moorlands Camp Nestled in the hills of Manchester, Moorlands Camp, a part of the Christian Camp and Conference Association can be considered the ultimate camp site. Moorlands Camp has lots of activities, including swimming, hiking, wall climbing, zip lining, and archery, bon fire, volleyball, and football courts. However, at the Leadership conference the focus will be on the Team Building, Challenge & Adventure Programme (TBCAP).

The Moorlands Camps TBCAP seeks to provide a multi-purpose recreational/training programme for professionals and young adults. The courses of the programme will serve as effective and unique tools for the development of individuals and teams within a controlled and safe learning environment.

Before functioning effectively as a member of a team, it is important that potential leaders become aware of the various personality types and the strengths and challenges associated with each. Awareness of communication styles, leadership styles, and conflict resolution styles will enhance team effectiveness. For this reason, team building activities will be preceded by a brief description of the different personality types and an “ice breaker�/role playing exercise used to illustrate and reinforce what is being said. These preliminary exercises are aimed at evoke self-awareness, and a willingness to apply oneself to behaviour that is conducive to team spirit, unity of purpose, and problem solving.

Activities will require participants to communicate and work together to overcome the challenges set. The intention is to present learning opportunities for teamwork, building good communication skills, respecting differences in others and solving problems needed by those who wish to be leaders of a student body community.

Being a student leader is a unique responsibility that involves enthusiasm, commitment, dedication to community work, and a desire to help the student body in its continuing development. It is also an opportunity for the individual to take risks and grow personally as a leader and peer educator. Leadership is not about a student’s title, as much as it is about his or her capacity to influence positive change in others.

Positive change agents are individuals who are committed to realizing a vision that enhances the communities they are a part of. Their ability to influence change stems from a sincere desire to improve the lives of those around them in meaningful ways. The University of Technology, Jamaica, takes pride in its student leaders. The student leaders we develop at the University are trained to be agents of positive change, through the leadership programme. The students are engaged in specific leadership-related topics such as: 1.

code of conduct

The dress code is simple: exercise UTech’s dress policy of “Modest is best”. Conference t-shirts will be issued at the beginning of the week. These t-shirts are required to be worn each day and will be in the colour of the group to which you will be assigned.

To ensure that the leadership training experience is safe and enjoyable for all, it is important that everyone strives to adhere to the following Code of Conduct: 1. All student leaders MUST attend all sessions as scheduled.

2. Respectfully follow the directives of the conference personnel.

3. All facilities are to be left in the same condition as they were found. Individuals will be liable for any damage to the property.

4. Each student leader must be in his/her assigned room at lights out, and remain there until the designated morning hour. The only exceptions will be for emergencies (for example illness, or needing the restroom) and under the authority of the conference personnel.

5. No loud music or talking will be tolerated.

6. Female leaders are not allowed to visit male dormitories, and vice versa.

7. ALL SEXUAL ACTS ARE PROHIBITED. You must practice self-control!!!

8. Use or POSSESSION OF ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND ILLEGAl or CONTROLLED DRUGS of any type, is PROHIBITED 9. Remember, you are representing your University, community, and family. Please conduct yourself in a manner that would make them all proud of you.

10. There will be zero tolerance of any misconduct. The display of UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR WILL BE CAUSE FOR IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL. The conference coordinator reserves the right to ask any student to discontinue the conference. To this end, refer to all posted rules.

What NOT to Wear Appropriate attire can be described as clothing that does not distract, and does not call attention to itself or to the wearer’s physique. Casual clothing is ideal, provided it is not one of the following articles, which is absolutely PROHIBITED: 1

Cut-off shorts

Miniskirts, extremely short high slits or long skirts with slits past the mid-thigh.

Torn, low-rise, frayed, or otherwise revealing jeans

Tube tops, tank tops, or tops with thin spaghetti straps

5

Tops must be of sufficient length so that no midriff skin shows

Low-cut or plunging necklines

Undershirts (worn as top shirts)

Any clothing item described as lingerie

Any clothing with alcohol or tobacco products, absence or questionable printing

If you do not agree with all of the terms of this agreement, you will not be eligible to attend the Student leaders Conference. The University of Technology, Jamaica requires that students conduct should be conducive and reflective of the University.

This agreement is effective until terminated. This agreement can be terminated on the basis established by the retreat coordinator who reserves the right if you violate the terms of agreement.

moorlands camp list of guidelines

1. As Moorlands is dedicated to honoring the LORD, and as we are instructed in His Word that in allthings we should act decently and in order, it is required that all should act accordingly and conduct themselves in a manner which is honoring to the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. . Every effort should be made to keep the camp environment clean, tidy and litter-free. A daily clean-up crew should be assigned to carry this out. For pest control reasons, storage of food in dorms is not permitted.

3. Water is scarce. Please conserve.

4. For security reasons, no outsiders are allowed on the camp grounds, except by prior invitation and with clearance from the camp managers. Any outreach meetings should be held in the community, not at Moorlands.

5. “Lights Out” is officially at 10:30 p.m. If activity does continue after this time, it must be done quietly, and with due consideration for neighbors and for the family residing at Top House.

6. Males are not allowed in female dormitories, and vice versa. Please have responsible adults assigned to supervise the dorm area.

7. No narcotic drugs, cigarettes or alcoholic beverages are allowed to be brought into and/or consumed or imbibed on the camp grounds.

8. No graffiti or other such defacement of the premises is allowed.

9. Camp property (including electrical fixtures, plumbing, and furnishings) should not be tampered with. Any damages should be reported at once to the management.

10. A modest dress code is to be observed at all times.

11. There is to be no eating or drinking in “the Rock.” Neither is there to be any removal of equipment (screens, projectors, microphones, speakers or extensions are to remain in “the Rock” permanently.)

executive summary ~ Draft National Youth Policy Page 9 of 43 9/8/03 The National Youth Policy recognizes and accepts that no one organization can successfully guarantee continued access to these five basic ingredients for all Jamaica’s youth. It is therefore important that the Policy adopts and endorses a multi-sectoral approach to youth development in Jamaica. This has been the very foundation of the National Youth Policy and has impacted on the process of revision. The consultations were held island wide and included youth, members of the international and local donor communities, sector representatives and members of the public in general. This facilitated dialogue, broad based feedback and ensured the relevance of the resulting document.

Understanding the Focal Areas The priority areas of the Policy take into consideration the myriad issues affecting youth. A litany of these issues was identified through research and the experts on the subject. This was further substantiated through the critical input of the young people, who participated in consultations across the island.

These consultations took place in a variety of settings and included focus group discussions and the administration of questionnaires (see Appendix C for more information on the methodology of the consultations).

The youth identified unemployment and education-related issues (including treatment by teachers and relevance of what is taught) as the most critical issues affecting them. Other commonly cited issues include crime and violence, gender disparities, lack of national unity, the illicit drug trade and drug use, teenage parenting, ignorance of culture and the need for activities and opportunities for youth.

It is from these and a myriad of other suggestions that six main areas for the Policy were developed.
