need to know Cape Whale Coast is acknowledged as a sustainable tourism destination with three Blue Flag beaches and a fourth, Castle Beach at Pearly Beach, added as a pilot Blue Flag beach. Harold Porter Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay, Flower Valley, Grootbos and Platbos outside Gansbaai, and Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus provide tranquil spaces where the biodiversity glory of our fynbos can be appreciated. Field-to-fork dining and eco-friendly practices at many venues are a source of pride as we strive to tread respectfully on the earth.

There’s more. The only rock art in the Overberg is found just outside the heritage village of Stanford on Phillipskop Mountain Reserve, the biggest abalone farm in the world can be visited at Heart of Abalone in Hermanus, De Kelders has drip caves and Kleinmond has a herd of wild horses that roams the banks of the Bot River lagoon.

The Cape Whale Coast can be as action-packed or relaxing as you wish it to be. With champagne air to breathe, good wines to enjoy and nature enveloping the landscape, this is the place to explore, relax and enjoy.

OUR WEATHER The Cape Whale Coast region generally offers idyllic weather year-round, with hot, dry summers and wet, cold winters. However, due to our position on this beautiful blue planet, we also tend to experience all four seasons in one day - with one area of the Cape Whale Coast enjoying an idyllic beach day while another is under a barrage of clouds and rain. So, when preparing for a trip this way, always be prepared for anything!

WHALE SEASON For 6 months of the year, Hermanus on the Cape Whale Coast is transformed into a whale metropolis, as hundreds of Southern Right Whales make the bay their home to breed and calve.
