letter from the ceo & board chair Dear KCSL Friends and Colleagues, What a year! It was a year of rapid changes pivoting to meet the growing needs of children and families in Kansas. KCSL maneuvered through continuous challenges to the way we do work while ensuring the children, parents, professionals and our employees remained physically safe from the COVID-19 virus, which was the headliner in 2020. The pandemic required us to learn a lot about protecting and promoting the well-being of children remotely. We remained steadfast in our vision that every child is raised in a loving family and lives in a safe, nurturing community. We stayed connected! Through 1-800-CHILDREN, parents had access to critical resources and someone who was in their corner during a stressful year. Staff visited families on their front porches and back yards. They had picnics with newborns in order to introduce tummy time to new parents. Program graduations were held in driveways. Staff brought some normalcy to children’s lives when they delivered sweet 4

treats for ice cream socials. We're so proud of all the creative ways staff pivoted to ensure parents were supported and children remained safe. As a nation, we were reminded the struggle with racial injustice continues. Many of the families served through programs at KCSL are racially and ethnically diverse. They experienced further unrest during 2020, and yet once again KCSL was there to support them. We listened to their concerns, fears and frustrations. We committed to helping families gain access to resources despite living in child care, food or health deserts. We helped families continue their education. We helped families become more self-sufficient. We also saw a great division across political views, yet KCSL continued to receive bipartisan support for the work we do. Our direction and focus to prevent child abuse ensures parents have the support they need now to be successful in order to break cycles of neglect, abuse and trauma. Our programs help both children and parents develop skills for success in their families, schools and workplaces. That is a universal mission. So while 2020 was a year of continuous change, we know stronger families started here because of KCSL's ability to pivot. Thank you for your outpouring support for the children and families we serve as well as our employees. Your kindness during a year that was a strain on everyone has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Sincerely, Gail Cozadd CEO

KCSL remained calm & quickly pivoted without disruption

KCSL has survived past major historical crises before like the Great Depression, World Wars and more. And 2020 didn't prove to be any different. We continue to pioneer services to meet the changing needs of children and families. When we pivot instead of panicking, we not only survive, we thrive! That’s what 128 years of experience teaches you.

Finding new and creative ways to stay connected with families became the new normal. KCSL’s virtual workspace came in different forms—from Zoom meetings, telehealth sessions and video chats to 'old fashioned' phone calls and text. And when we had opportunities to be in person and safe, we made the best of it. Regular porch visits and drop-offs turned into a new take on an ice cream social or a chance to recognize how well a family was doing. Families engaged more in our services because of the convenience of online platforms.

"pivoting is not the end of the disruption process, but the beginning of the next leg of your journey,"-Jay Samit Understanding that times of change and doubt can be difficult for both professionals and the families we work with, KCSL approached 2020 with an open mind and flexibility. Our ability to shift to new technology and software was essential to meet community needs while maintaining our commitments to Kansas children, families, partners and leaders.

"I loved the flexibility of the conference schedule, as it also allowed me to continue to be productive at my job. Also, the platform being virtual with the mobile option was also very unique and suited to working professionals who also need to obtain CEUs."

thank you! KCSL has always found ways to adapt and accomplish our goals in the face of adversity. And we didn't stop when it came to finding alternatives for the community to help us financially. KCSL did what we do best: pivot. On Nov. 10, KCSL held its first virtual fundraising event, Together, We Thrive!, to ensure the continuation of KCSL prevention and education services statewide. The event created a safe way for our generous friends and partners to come together online and show their support of KCSL. Because of you, it was a success!
