A LETTER FROM

THE PRESIDENT/CEO & BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends, Will you join me in dreaming of a Kansas where an immunization exists preventing child abuse and neglect and mitigating the consequences for those who have suffered?

Dona Booe

KCSL President & CEO

The DREAM is within our reach now. The immunization for child abuse and neglect exists. We simply must find the will, by raising the public conscience, to create new public policy for a system of care that strengthens and supports parenting. A new children and family services system will reflect two of our State's long-standing values of safe, stable, and nurturing homes for children and our value of a strong work ethic that leads to a healthy economy. Adversity in childhood is a public health crisis in Kansas, not a social welfare problem that effects only a few. Early identification of parenting risk factors can lead to interventions and supports that prevent child abuse and neglect and mitigate the resulting academic failure, poor health outcomes and low worker productivity. Overcoming risks and challenges through healthy support systems builds resilience in parents, families and communities. The immunization works and KCSL will invest in a future where even more parents can succeed.

Margaret La Rue

KCSL Board of Directors Chair

4

As we move into 2019, KCSL stands ready to provide the necessary services, advocate for public policy support and work with our corporate and community partners to realize a future without child abuse and neglect: •     Workplace cultures where parenting responsibilities coexist successfully with job performance responsibilities.

•     Economic development priorities that recognize parenting support as an essential element for community growth. •     Community-based parenting supports that are prevalent, accessible and the first choice of service intervention to meet each family’s unique need(s). •     Public policy and financial investment (both public and private) that reflect an understanding that children will thrive when their parents thrive and that leads to economic success. Within our 2018 Annual Report, we share and celebrate the success of our ordinary miracles made possible over the past 125 years through KCSL services. We recognize that we have simply been helping children, youth and families build resilience by providing healthy supports that mitigate the consequences of childhood adversity. Through their own determination and strength of will, those we help have become stronger contributing members of our community. It is those we serve who have dreamed a million dreams and reflect the promise of what Kansas can be in the future without child abuse and neglect. We embrace the wisdom, leadership and support each of you as volunteers, donors, partners and staff brought to our success and the success of those we helped in 2018. Thank you for all the ways in which you contribute to the impact of our mission, To Protect and Promote the Well-Being of Children, and help us make dreams come true for all Kansans as we move forward together and turn our dreams into reality.
