2015 ANNUAL
REPORT
CONNECTIONS Kansas Children’s Service League
A LETTER FROM
THE PRESIDENT/CEO & CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Dear Friends, Finding the correct answer is as simple as connecting the dots, right? We all remember connect the dot puzzles as children. A perfectly clear image would emerge from a page simply by drawing lines between some sequential pattern of dots designated by numbers or letters. As long as the instructions were followed, the lines drawn straight, the same clear image appeared for everyone. Despite the science behind it that early educational and social/ emotional investments in a young child have lifelong benefits for society, it is not yet an image clear to everyone. But just CONNECT the dots: • When parents can provide safe, stable, and nurturing homes and have access to affordable quality child care centers for their very young children, then children develop healthy brains that are ready to learn when school starts; • If a child’s brain is ready to learn, then they are more likely to read at grade level by third grade; • If a child reads at grade level by the third grade, they are very likely to embrace education and graduate from high school; • If a child graduates from high school, they can move on to higher learning, trade schools, or enter the job market with the appropriate social/emotional skills to become a contributing member of society; and • Employable, tax-paying citizens are critical to a sustainable, healthy and vibrant economy and communities that thrive.

KCSL helps to connect the dots for the children and families of Kansas that we reach through our dynamic array of services that prevent child abuse, strengthen families, and empower parents and youth. Each program and service delivered is a dot that connects all of us to a better future. In our current environment of changing public policy and funding priorities regarding children and education, it is important that we are continuing to inform thousands of Kansans about how adversity in the lives of our very young children is having a devastating impact on health and economic outcomes for our state and country. By sharing our images of resiliency through our Building Healthy Family Mission Tours, we are connecting the dots between creating awareness, engaging volunteers in the mission and increasing private financial support to ensure our work is sustained for years to come. We celebrate each of you who contributed to the success of our Mission in 2015!
KANSAS CHILDREN’S SERVICE LEAGUE protects and promotes the well-being of children by: preventing child abuse strengthening families empowering parents & youth
With Appreciation,
John Bridson, Chairman of the Board
Dona Booe, President/CEO

PREVENTING CHILD ABUSE From the beginning, KCSL has been steadfast to CONNECT children and families to the assistance they need. We prevent child abuse by starting our work with parents early and before children are hurt. Most people think that parents who abuse their children do so intentionally, but the fact is abuse and neglect occur out of ignorance and is often what parents experienced themselves. We believe that all children deserve great childhoods. Supporting families and ensuring parents have the knowledge, skills and resources they need are effective ways to protect and keep children safe. Programs like Healthy Families America, Early Head Start, Crisis Nursery and Drug Endangered Child served over 850 at-risk children and families who benefit from our trained home visitors and case management services that help protect them from forming or increasing harmful behaviors.

“About two years ago, we contacted KCSL’s Healthy Families program. The staff helped me get a driver’s license and make connections in the community so I would feel less isolated as someone new to this country. My two girls are doing well as a result of parenting support I received in my home visits. I am now enrolled in nursing classes, which will soon help my family financially. My husband has received his accounting degree, and we are relocating for his new job!” --BELINDA, A MOTHER WHOSE FAMILY PARTICIPATED IN OUR HEALTHY FAMILIES PROGRAM

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES Children who are raised in stable families do better academically, are shown to be more financially successful and contribute more to society. We strengthen families who are considering opening their hearts and homes to parent a child with special needs giving them the basic building blocks of a healthy life. Most people believe that there are families just waiting for children and are prepared to meet their needs, but the fact is there are far more children who need families that can handle their care. An integral part of our work since 1893, KCSL continues to CONNECT loving families to children in need. Our Foster Families, From Heart to Home Infant Adoption program and Adopt Kansas Kids website provide forever families for children so they are fully prepared and always supported.

“Though the adoption was long and tedious at times, we always knew KCSL had our back and the best interests of our adopted son in mind. They guided us through the process and advocated for our family as the best option for him. Our family is now complete with him in our lives.” --BETH, ADOPTIVE MOTHER OF A PRESCHOOL AGED CHILD WHO SUFFERED SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME WHILE IN THE CARE OF HIS BIOLOGICAL FAMILY

7
EMPOWERING PARENTS & YOUTH Children do well when their parents do well. We empower parents and youth by guiding them to healthy, well-informed, natural support systems that help them build resiliency during a crisis. Many people believe that everyone has someone to rely on to help them be good parents and responsible youth, but the fact is many parents and youth because of their own experiences are isolated and have no trustworthy support system available. KCSL CONNECTS parents and youth to the tools and resources needed to handle and manage daily overwhelming challenges successfully. More than 200 parents participate in our annual Parent Leadership Conference to gain parenting knowledge and skills to lead their own communities on issues important to families. Our Center for Restorative Education program shows better grades and improved social emotional behavior for youth in need of credit recovery in school.

We joined the same KCSL Fatherhood support group where we learned the tools needed to be successful parents. It was a challenge for me because I’m from out of state with no local family to help. It’s working though! The court just returned my little girl back home to me! I honestly don’t know if this would have happened without KCSL’s support. Thank you!” --CHRIS, MEMBER OF A FATHERHOOD SUPPORT GROUP & RECEIVED FATHER MENTORING
