Finding a balance in social life, faith, work & relationships.

I’m writing this while being quarantained because of the coronavirus. Being forced not to do much has taught me to do a lot of different things. Including finding a balance in work, faith and the people that I love. A social life during this time? Barely existing. How do you find the right stability?

How do you combine work or school, faith, relationships and a social life? 2020 has been a wild year and 2021 seems to have the same start, but we can also learn great lessons from all the tension it has brought us. Something I’ve always struggled with is giving priorities to the right things in life. When I started to study art and design, I created this vision of wanting to do good, not only for myself but for others too. After two years I came to a breaking point. At this time I realised I needed to make a change and even after those years and especially now with covid-19, I still learn about finding balance and about myself everyday.

Personal balance Knowing the right priorities is, most of the time, something personal. So the first thing you need to realise is: what is the most meaningful for me? For example, I was focusing way too much on school and work. I Only realised later that it wasn’t the healthiest decision, even though it may seem like I was doing a great job and having good grades. Now, I’m not saying you need to stop working on 6 issue no.1

school. I’m saying: If you’re feeling exhausted, overloaded with work or like you could spend more time on other things, you should definitely try new things! Don’t get me wrong, a good and hard working day feels amazing. Always remember: you didn’t acutally ‘make it’ because you have good grades, many followers or a great job! You’ve ‘made’ it when you are healthy, like what you’re doing and can share love with others. Sometimes ‘cutting off’ a ‘friend’ can be a healthy decision for you, sometimes helping your friend instead of a little selfcare can be a better priority. I think deep down you already know what the better decision is, it just takes discipline to listen to it. I’ll give you an example of my priorities these days, so you can maybe create a list for yourself! You can add as many subjects that you like! 1. My faith (being a Christian) 2. Family, friends & people I love 3. Being healthy, making healthy decisions 4. Work / school / courses

Sometimes work goes before meeting a friend, but the key is to know when to stay true to your values. Especially during these times you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself.

‘‘We can also learn great lessons from all the tention it has brought us.’’ And: be proud of your achievements! I’m proud of you getting good grades, I’m proud of you knowing or not knowing what you want. I’m proud of you for trying. I’m proud of you for choosing to relax instead of overworking. And I’m proud of you for making a mistake and learning. We are human and all we can do is our best, pray & love. –

lots of love, Daphne

Rahel interview with

You might know Rahel as a backing vocalist for some big name artists, but Rahel is an all-rounder. An artist, sing-songwriter and vocalist.

She tells us about her religion and how personal it actually is to release music. As a Christian and believer in Jesus and the redemptive story of Jesus Christ, she puts a new perspective into the music industry and tells us what it means for her to be both a believer and musician. Did your faith/relationship with God/Jesus change while being in a pandemic? I would say it’s grown in intimacy naturally, because there was just so much more quiet time. I definitely felt like I could finally put the time into making habits that I’ve always wanted to make. Being in the Word daily, as much as possible, that was great. The fact that the whole world stopped gave me kind of this feeling like life isn’t what we think it is in terms of our plans. God has His plan. I can imagine being on tour changes your lifestyle a lot. Do you have any specific routines while being on a tour, to keep your faith strong? I think the biggest one is not shutting myself off from church community back home. Keeping up my own reading on tour is essential but admittedly really hard to do with 12 issue no.1

the nature of touring work. I try my best to not let the lifestyle changes overtake talking with God and letting Him in.

Something else: I love your Good Days cover! What is a goal you’d like to reach in your music career? Short term would simply just be finishing the project that I’m working on, an EP, who knows it could be an album! Long term, I just want to be in a position where I can influence positive change and conversation in the industry in various areas I’m passionate about. And to be honest just to be a Christian voice in an industry that is so saturated with lack of faith or lack of God. My everyday goal is to carry God’s light and love on people. That sounds really inspiring! What type or genre of music would you like to create? I think I’m always going to struggle with saying one particular genre, but I know my music can probably sound like a little bit of soul influence, jazz influence in terms of the chords and harmonic structure, bit of pop. I’m still discovering that at the moment, but it’s like a blend of soul,

pop, jazz and RnB. I’d say those are the four.

Sounds amazing! I think music and releasing music is so personal, do you find it hard to release music, are you afraid to put it out there? This question is coming at a such a timely point in my release plan, cause right now, yes I am. It is pretty scary and I didn’t realise how scary it was until now, when it’s coming up to actually shortlisting songs and sealing creative decisions. I would love to be the person that is just unashamedly me, and I think there’s a weird pressure on your first project that forms a war between having an opportunity to present yourself as something else vs being the true you. I find myself being scared of people perhaps not understanding the true me, or people thinking some of the music is a bit too left. Being unsure about whether I even want to be sharing my vulnerabilities in general. It’s okay though, I’m learning to not second guess my creative risks and keep putting my all into delivering the songs the way I envisioned them. →

Quick Questions What is your favorite song at the moment? Apart by Brandy. If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Chicken burrito! Are you a morning or a night person? Neither… Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself? I played saxophone when I was in middle school and high school, 14 issue no.1

If you could visit one place right now, where would it be? Paris! If you weren’t a singer, what profession would you be doing? Psychologist. What is your favorite instrument? At the moment guitar. Song writing or singing? Can’t live without either!

Rahe As I can hear, you do a lot of different things. What is the ‘biggest’ thing you’ve learned so far during your music career? I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is that, it is really not about me. Anyone who knows me personally, knows that the way I first got into the industry was God constantly put me into situations I thought I’m really not qualified to be in, or I’m not meant to be in. I’ve learnt that when things feel really orchestrated by God, there’s going to be a prompting from God to actually do something in whatever new space He’s moving you to.

pressures of the industry. Can you relate to that? And if so, how do you keep yourself focused? The more I see what the industry is like, in a business sense, the more I empathize with young artists. Whether they are independent or with a record label — There is just so much pressure! I definitely do feel that pressure in a creative sense, in a financial sense, in a relationship sense to my partner and my family. I think that a healthy way to cope with it, which I would wish that every young artist has, is a team around them or some loved ones that can help them.

rewarding. With huge crowds of people singing along, those moments are always pretty special cause they make me dream bigger. And touring with my friends, I just love that I’ve been on tour with my actual friends like the Billy Davis crew.

God is actually placing me somewhere to, at the end of the day, share Him and share the Gospel. Amongst the busyness it can feel like a lot of the time I’m doing things in my strength and that’s when I just have to let go and realize that every opportunity coming my way isn’t even about the glory of myself or because I’m talented. It is actually for God’s glory, so that more may see Him, more can experience His love. When I’m in that place things start to flow again.

Learning to just come home is important. Whether that is a physical place, or a relationship with someone or quiet time with God. Just always coming back to a place where you know you’re your authentic self. And making that a priority to be there as often as possible, because that’s the place you operate from most freely, especially as a creative.

I see that you’re engaged, congratulations!! How do you combine a busy music schedule with traveling, and your personal life? Thank you! Honestly it’s just continuously coming back to the fact that priorities are everything. It’s not easy but I just try to remember that I’m never going to regret making time for someone I love and choosing them. Even when it’s hard you fight for it. –

There’s been many cases of talented young artists like yourself who have burned themselves out due to the

The moments where there’s been something brewing in my heart, and I’m just sent into this sort of trance for hours and hours just letting it all out singing with my piano or guitar. Then looking back and realizing: wow, so that’s what I was feeling. That moment of reflection is a powerful experience.

What is the best experience you’ve got so far, music wise? Can’t pick one! Some of the bigger shows that I’ve done as a backing vocalist with Ruel have been really issue no.1 15

Amelia’s Favorites Hi, I’m Amelia from the page @eversincesixteen and I’m a teen blogger sharing my mental health journey as well as tips and tricks that I learn along the way. With my account niche being around mental health, here are my top 5 favourites at the moment that I find have a positive effect on my mental wellbeing.

01

Let’s start free:

The Internet

02 Paint by number relaxing time

Paint by numbers: These are great for relaxing your mind and taking yourself away from reality for a while and there’s SO many different pictures. You can find them on Amazon as well as Etsy if you’re looking for a more specific design.

04

The internet, especially Face Time and Zoom. I look forward to my weekly Face Time with my friends and I’d recommend trying out the PowerPoint game! This is where everyone in the group picks a fun topic to make a presentation on and let me tell you, it provides hours of laughs and giggles.

03 Easy Hairstyle Bubble ponytail

L’oreal Dream Lengths

No haircut cream

Speaking of hair, you need to get behind the Loreal Dream Lengths range. It is amazing! It smells incredible and my hair is a little damaged after all the straightening and curling, but this works wonders. I could swear that it also helped my hair to grow which is perfect. I’m just obsessed! It makes it feel so smooth and I can go a few days without having to wash it again which is just another bonus in itself.

A good novel

I have a book by Beth O’Leary which I have recently finished. It’s called “The Flat Share” and I can’t stress enough how amazing it was to read. It’s brilliant to ease your mind and an easy read since the chapters are only a few pages long, which I love! I highly recommend giving it a read if you have some spare time on your hands. It’s essentially a love story about two people who share a flat but have never met. I’m not usually one for a love story but this was just too good to put down and I’m a little sad that it’s over.

Don’t feel guilty to relax and recharge yourself.

Finding relaxation during these times can be a challenge. The world doesn’t stop. Productivity has reached a high level and being productive is the new successful. For the fellow Christians reading this and ofcourse for everyone else too, even the Bible tells us: ‘‘It is true that you are a fool if you fold your arms and do nothing, because then you starve by your own laziness. Still, a little rest is better than a lot of toil and a lot of disappointments.’’ Ecclesiastes 4: 4-6 And that’s exactly what it is. Working hard is great, but the Bible and God also tells us to take our rest. We’ve been given such a beautiful world that we sometimes forget to live in it. Even if it’s listening to your favorite calming or ambient music, dancing to your happy songs, lighting a scented candle, praying, seeing your friends or just reading a good book. Enjoy this time, don’t feel guilty to relax & recharge yourself. Do you ever have these small moments in life where your sadness and worries leaves you, even if it is for a few seconds, it feels like time has stopped? When you look around and you’re running through the rain or you’re dancing and singing to your favourite song or you’re laughing like crazy with your friends or you’re working hard on something you’ve always wanted to do or create and you feel alive. Like really ALIVE. When you‘re not thinking about anything that worries you; You’re just living in the moment. Those are the moments we should strive for –

Building a

positive

state of mind

2020 was a year that no one would forget in a hurry. From bushfires to a global pandemic to racial injustice - it was a year with a lot of negative vibes. You can’t imagine how excited I was for 2021. To me, 2021 felt like a fresh start, an opportunity to grow even more. Surprisingly, instead of being happy as I ought to be, I find myself being scared. I find myself being worried, afraid of the unknown.

The thing with negative thoughts is that they slowly drain you emotionally and mentally. They leave one stressed and tired, sick and scared. But the wonderful thing about a thought is that you can control them if you change your mindset. Maybe you’re feeling the way I do - scared, confused and worried - I want you to know that you’re not alone. You can definitely turn those lemons into a great cup of lemonade. One thing I’ve learnt is that it’s possible to build a positive state of mind, all it takes is your 26 issue no.1

determination. A positive state of mind requires you to focus on positive thoughts and emotions. Below, I have listed a few ways to practice building a positive state of mind. The negative things are most of the time reality, but so are the positive things in this world.

Replace the negative with the positive Pay attention to your thoughts so that whenever a negative thought comes up, you’d be able to replace them with positive ones. Surround yourself with positive people Seek the company of positive minded people whenever you get the chance. Don’t give up, Don’t give in There will be times you will feel so overwhelmed, don’t give up on your goal of staying positive, but remember negative feelings are part of living. We’re human.

Have faith in God No matter how tough it might get, always remember to trust in God because He loves you and has good plans for you. Having a positive state of mind always might sound tough, but it isn’t. It is a gradual process. You do not change your attitude and actions overnight. Good things take time. Remember to believe in yourself and God and you’d always succeed. – By: Emmanuella

‘‘Life is not a competition and always striving to be the best at everything can have a toxic effect on mental health.’’

The

no phone rule

Growing up in a digital world, combined with the fact we are currently in a global pandemic, means that most of us are spending many hours on our phones, laptops and tablets each day. The majority of my hobbies require devices, and as a result my screen time has overwhelmingly increased since the lockdowns!! I won’t share how many hours I often spend on my phone in a day, but it is embarrassing… However, I have spent the last few months trying to focus on hobbies which I can do without screens and this has led to me exploring and discovering so many different activities. I think it’s so important to encourage less screen time where possible, as it doesn’t always have a positive effect on our physical and mental health. Therefore, here are my tips for finding a passion without needing your phone…

Try it out! Firstly, just try different things out – you don’t have to be good at something to enjoy it. A lot of people, particularly those who are perfectionists, will shy away from trying a certain hobby because they doubt their own ability at it. That is a perfectly understandable feeling, but definitely something I would 30 issue no.1

implore people to try and unlearn. Being good at something is not synonymous with enjoyment, and it’s okay to take pride in just trying a hobby, even if it’s not something which you’re naturally talented at. For example, I started drawing in lockdown and I find it so relaxing – I am absolutely not good at it (!), but I try to let go of that and just focus on drawing for fun. When we put pressure on ourselves to excel at everything we try, we inadvertently make the hobby feel like more of a chore than something fun. Life is not a competition and always striving to be the best at everything can have a toxic effect on mental health. Additionally, it’s important to recognise that you don’t have to spend lots of money on your hobby to enjoy it or be successful at it. Of course there are some activities which are on the pricier side, but there are so many you can try on a tight budget.

Be kind to yourself Despite all this, I want to emphasise that we are in a global pandemic and so you shouldn’t feel guilty for an increased screen time – sometimes just scrolling through social media

is the perfect escape for everything going on at the moment, and I completely understand that. But don’t underestimate the power of putting down your phone for an hour or two and taking time to work on yourself… No phone hobbies to try: Baking/cooking Painting/drawing Photography Going on jogs Song-writing Knitting Bullet journaling Jigsaw puzzles Scrapbooking Cycling – By: Lexie www.whatlexieloves.blogspot.com
