OPHTALMOLOGY SUMMIT The UN Group of Friends of Vision convened a meeting of world leaders to discuss the value of vision, a meeting in which Doctor Mariano Yee participated.

The meeting is raising the profile of eye health as a fundamental development issue critical to achieving the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

The United Nations General Assembly, Gaston Brwne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, and the Friends of the UN Vision group received world leaders, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Prime Minister of Nepal, and Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of ST. Kitts and Nevis, ministerial representatives from more than 15 countries and many eye health organizations.

Prime Minister Browne addressed the group and said: “We must focus more of our collective action on health and development initiatives that are achievable and can accelerate progress on all the Sustainable Development Goals. Healthy vision is one of those issues, but we must prioritize it more. It can be resolved in this decade.”

Important conversations like this reinforce that it is time to take decisive action on global eye health. Where all governments implement the recommendation of the UN Vision Resolution and seize the opportunity to address eye health as a contributing factor to economic and other progress.

Dr. Mariano Yee and Kate attended the UN General Assembly. Dr. Mariano had closing remarks at the high-level delegation breakfast on Vision. He spoke to 21 Health Ministers (including Nepal) as representatives of ILO and WHO. The United Nations high-level meeting on universal health coverage 2023 took place on September 21, 2023. It provided countries and stakeholders the opportunity to reinvigorate progress towards the provision of health services for all. World leaders renewed their commitment to achieving UHC by 2030 with the adoption of a new political declaration.

The language around eye health has been notably strengthened since 2019. The statement indicates the universal recognition of eye health as an important global challenge and fundamental to universal health coverage efforts.

Guastatoya As an integral part of our work at the Vision Center, we are dedicated to raising awareness among our patients about various eye diseases, with the aim of preventing total blindness. Recently, we carried out a series of visits to different towns in the region, including San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán and the villages Puente Orellana and San Gertrudis.

During these visits, we approach neighborhood stores to provide key information on different ocular pathologies and perform tests for visual acuity, glaucoma, and blood pressure control. Our approach seeks to not only treat conditions, but also educate the community about the importance of eye health and overall well-being.

San Marcos In our ongoing commitment to community eye health, at the Vision Center we conduct primary screenings in local areas, especially targeting seniors. These reviews allow us to identify possible patients with various ocular pathologies, whom we then refer to our Vision Center for appropriate monitoring and treatment.

In particular, we focus on identifying those patients who could benefit from no-cost surgery, in line with our participation in World Sight Day 2023.

Through these initiatives, we reaffirm our commitment to ocular well-being and care. quality medical care for the community.
