Through the professor specialized in the surgical area of the anterior segment, various ophthalmological procedures are performed with pig eyes such as:

• Management of trauma and eye injuries

• Cataract surgery (FACO, SICS, EXTRACAPSULAR)

• Corneal transplant

• Management of complicated cataracts

• Suture technique

SUBSPECIALTY ACADEMIC PROGRAM FROM PREVIOUS SEGMENT

During the month of March, the residents: Mardy Gómez and Esperanza Castillo, teachers of the Anterior Segment Subspecialty; They continue in the academic process, actively participating in theoretical classes, clinical practice and surgical interventions. The learning contents obtained during this month were:

OPHTHALMOLOGICAL DAY TOTONICAPÁN

A check-up was carried out on more than 23 people, among which 13 were women, 4 men, 5 girls and 1 boy, providing follow-up refers to the patients treated at the Totonicapán vision center where 1 pterygium surgery and donation of 1 pair of lenses, as well as medications for the treatment of allergies, blepharitis and pterygium surgery.

OPHTHALMOLOGICAL DAY QUETZALTENANGO

A day was held to recruit surgeries for patients with cataracts, pterygium or other pathologies, attending to more than 50 patients with visual problems to refer to the Xela Clinic.

Of the patients evaluated, 43 adults and 10 children were detected, referring 20 patients with pathology to the clinic for prompt cataract and pterygium surgery.

OPHTHALMOLOGICAL DAY PEDIATRIC

During the month of March, various pediatric conference activities were carried out, executing the Looking Towards the Future program, at the Salvador de Oliva school in Cobán, training 34 teachers on the topic of visual acuity with the aim of eradicating blindness from childhood. He carried out the day evaluating 327 children.

The Ixobel Urban Mixed Official School was also visited in the area of Poptún, Petén, where 10 teachers are trained on the topic of visual acuity with the aim of eradicating blindness from childhood. The day was held evaluating 335 children. 10 teachers and 16 parents, of whom Ivan de Jesus Navas, 12 years old and with possible OCULAR TOXOPLASMOSIS, was referred to the vision center, was referred to the Vincent Pescatore hospital to be evaluated by a pediatric ophthalmologist. .

OPTOMETRY

VISION CENTER OPTOMETERS

Training for optometrists from Vision Centers with the purpose of standardizing the process of referring patients to ophthalmologists to homogenize the information sent through the flow system and expedite care for the patient.

With the aim of improving the service, measures are being implemented to incorporate more precise diagnostic techniques, as well as the continuity of the telemedicine project.

Cristina Velásquez Gabriel 65 years old, diagnosed with senile cataract in both eyes.

Her family commented that they felt sad about what was happening to her, she started crying because she couldn’t do the things she used to do and she suffered falls because she couldn’t see well.

MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Aimed at hospital administrators, heads of vision centers, academic coordination and hospital mana gers, with the continuous training of leaders in strengthening the effective communication skills necessary for professional development; learning in this month’s modules about the identification and adaptation of communication styles, active lis tening and practice of the pairing technique, thus strengthening their assertive ability to lead teams and achieve positive results in the various areas of competence.

REVIEW AND MODULES 8 AND 9 (GLAUCOMA 2 AND CORNEAL ULCERS) DIPLOMA IN

Training aimed at all optometrists to identify the signs and symptoms of the most frequent pathologies through the appropriate clinical method for their correct detection and thus put into practice the knowledge acquired through practical cases. Correctly refer patients with detected pathologies to the ophthalmologist.

UBM APPLICATIONS IN GLAUCOMA AND OTHER PATHOLOGIES

Capacitación dirigida a médicos con el objetivo de actualizar las indicaciones de diagnóstico por medio de UBM, consideraciones en la técnica para realizar este estudio, utilidad para la toma de decisiones médicas y quirúrgicas, la importancia en el diagnóstico correcto de las causas de Cierre angular, y utilidad del UBM para el diagnóstico de otras patologías.

Training aimed at Anterior Segment sub-specialist doctors to learn about the differences between intraocular lenses, advantages and disadvantages, the characteristics of each of them and how these can help the patient and the doctor to choose the ideal lens in a personalized way.
