1/2022 Dear Reader, It’s been 150 years since the first tram glided on its tracks through Dresden. Ever since, trams have been a familiar sight in Dresden, providing eco-friendly mobility and becoming one of the most important means of public transport. Dresden has always used striking vehicle designs such as the legendary “Hecht” tram – supposedly shaped like a pike. More innovation is in store for the first half of this year, when – in keeping with the anniversary – we can look forward to the first newgeneration vehicle entering service. Until then, however, some preparations are still required. Find out what they are in our lead topic, starting on page 6. We’ll also be answering some of the questions that “move” you, taking the 63 “Down the line” from Löbtau to Pillnitz, and inviting you to the VVO Discovery Day.

Got a question you always wanted to ask about the DVB? This is where we answer those you have sent in over the last few weeks in letters, e-mails, by phone or on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Maybe one of the following issues has “moved” you, too? When the fares change, how long do I have to replace my tickets?
Do I get a new FAHRKARTE every year?
No, the subscribers’ smart card can be used for five years. Look on the back to check when your FAHRKARTE expires. The month and year are on the right, under the QR code. For example, if it says 04/22 there, then your smart card can be used up to and including 30 April 2022. Before it expires, we’ll post you a new FAHRKARTE. Incidentally, for that to run smoothly, we need your current address. If you’ve moved, you can easily change your details at www. dvb.de/meinabo.
If you have bought tickets before the fare increase comes into force, the following applies in the interim. From 1 April 2022, unused tickets bought at the old price can be exchanged for new ones by paying the difference in price at our service points and all service centres run by VVO partner enterprises. They can be exchanged up to three years after the date of purchase. Single-fare tickets, one-day passes, 4-ticket passes, monthly passes and monthly 9 a.m. passes at the old price will be recognised up to the end of the third month after the new fares come into force (until 30 June 2022). All tickets that have not changed in price can continue to be used.
WHAT MOVES YOU?
Can I see whether my tram is late in the DVB mobil app?
Yes, you can – and that’s not all. Our DVB mobil app and our mobile website also show you real-time departures and connections. At a glance, you can see what tram or bus is leaving next, whether your tram will arrive at the stop on time, earlier or late, or whether you can make your connection.
Our tip: If you like, you can turn on location services on your phone and you will automatically see a list of all tram and bus stops nearby, with current departure times.
Why doesn’t the NGT DX DD have exterior mirrors any more?
The answer is simple: our new light-rail tram has got wider. To make sure it still fits through any street, the classic exterior mirrors have been replaced with cameras. These do not jut out into the road like conventional exterior mirrors. The camera is flush with the body of the tram, saving crucial centimetres of vehicle width. But there’s another reason, too: the camera systems used give the driver a much broader field of vision and can be adapted to different driving situations. The blind spot that has always posed a certain safety risk is several times smaller. When the tram’s path narrows in certain situations, e.g. due to double-parked or poorly parked cars, the driver needs to be dexterous and have good spatial perception to manoeuvre the tram past the obstacle without a scratch. The rear-view camera provides ideal driver assistance and gives the NGT DX DD greater freedom of movement.

Our new tram will soon be running on Route 2 Before it enters regular operation, however, the NGT DX DD has to be approved for passenger service by the Technical Supervisory Authority (TAB). To prepare for that, all required tests are currently being carried out and recorded, necessary documents are being put together and the drivers are being trained.
Checking out the new light-rail tram Preparations are in full swing to get the new tram approved to enter operation. The first tests have already taken place in Bautzen, but the process has to be completed in Dresden for the first vehicle to be put into service. The NGT DX DD was specially designed and adapted for Dresden in line with our requirements. Now, all the theoretical plans and calculations have to be tested in practice. As Dresden is the only city in Germany to have a gauge of 1450 mm, 15 mm wider than the standard gauge, the tests need to be
carried out in situ. That is a lengthy process, requiring not just considerable coordination with the manufacturer, but also extensive testing and readjustment of the first vehicle deployed. It is only then that the first vehicle can enter scheduled operation and series production can begin. Dresden will be getting 30 new trams in total. The first was delivered by Alstom in mid-September 2021, and the other 29 vehicles will be arriving in Dresden by the middle of 2023. They will initially be deployed on Route 2, followed by Route 3 after that line has been upgraded.

Preparing for the fixed-route service Before the tram greets its first passengers, plenty of test trips are needed on the network. The NGT DX DD must be able to cope with any incline and curve. The technology and all the detailed settings also have to be tested in operation.
Colour ful play of lights At the end of November 2021, the evening lit up like a rainbow as the ambient lighting was tested. The bright colours shown in the photo are not intended for scheduled services, however. Combined, they create what is known as ambient lighting, that automatically adjusts to different times of day. This will give the tram a far more pleasant ambience in future.
First trip to Pennrich On 20 December 2021, our new light-rail tram got the green light to set off from the depot under its own power, taking its first test run to Pennrich. It stopped briefly before each tram stop so that the workers could check – one last time – the theoretically calculated clearances as the tram passed the platforms.
Test run on Route 2 Maiden trip On 4 November 2021, our new NGT DX DD took its first powered test run at our Gorbitz depot. Supervised by the depot manager, the vehicle successfully completed its first trip on the grounds. Being able to drive under its own power was the prerequisite for almost all the other tests carried out before putting the tram in commission.
The tram set out on its future route for the first time at the start of January 2022. That morning, the team left the Gorbitz depot, battling the cold and rain as they headed into town. Our new arrival passed through the city centre via Postplatz, all the way to the terminal in Niedersedlitz. To prepare for anything that might happen, all the possible detour routes were also tested, focusing particularly on ensuring that the vehicle negotiated every tram stop without a hitch. Making lots of stops, the team carefully worked their way past all the platforms.

Travelling at maximum load Another assessment was also planned for our NGT DX DD in January: a load test. The maximum load of a fully occupied vehicle was simulated: 32,965 kilogrammes. To this end, the new tram was loaded with a total of 1,689 weights and sandbags. With the additional weight of the fuels (approx. 325 kilogrammes), the driver and maintenance staff (about 640 kilogrammes) and the measurement devices and protective equipment (approx. 550 kilogrammes), the tram weighed roughly 85.5 tonnes in total. While the vehicle was fully laden, the experts measured variables such as how low the running gear sank and how far the car body sagged.
ng Braking, standing, drivi A tram has various braking systems: dynamic brakes, spring-applied brakes and magnetic track brakes. The latter are used, for example, when making an emergency stop. The functioning of the brakes is tested in a wide variety of situations, e.g. with the tram empty or full, with the power supply cut and at different speeds. Back in January, test stops and starts were practised with a full load at the steepest incline in Dresden, at Mordgrundbrücke.
Still to be tested There’s lots more to do. Ultimately, every single cable, line and software setting has to be checked. It is only when all the necessary tests have been carried out and passed that the Technical Supervisory Authority can approve the vehicle for use on the route. Tests still have to be made for the passenger communication system, the connection to the control centre, tram travel at 600 and 750 volts DC, and electromagnetic compatibility – making sure, for instance, there is no interference with mobile phone reception. At the same time, the repair shops, which have been converted to fit the new, wider vehicles, also need to be tested and the staff there trained. Among other things, the tram lift and rooftop working facilities at the Gorbitz depot have been adapted so that maintenance work and repairs can be carried out on the NGT DX DD there.
Training is underway State-of-the-art technology has been incorporated into the NGT DX DD, and staff need to become familiar with it. The drivers have already started having training sessions, for example teaching them how to use the driver assistance system. Many elements have been rearranged, and they need to practise using cameras rather than the usual exterior mirrors. The vehicle-specific fault management system and eco-drive specifications also require practice. So far, all the tests have been passed with flying colours. We are thus expecting the line to start operating in the middle of June 2022. We’d like to celebrate that event with you. You’ll find all the information you need in good time at www.dvb.de

Our bus fleet is getting quieter This year, we are pleased to be welcoming 20 new electric buses! The plan is to use them on Routes 68 and 81. If all goes as planned, our electric buses – 18 articulated eCitaro buses and two standard eCitaro buses, from EvoBus – will be coming in staggered deliveries starting in April 2022. They will then be tested extensively for about three months, before coming into regular zero-emission operation from the summer of 2022.
Why are we investing in electric buses? Battery-powered buses are currently proving to be the optimal solution for us to implement the EU’s Clean Vehicles Directive. For buses bought in the period up to 2025, at least 22.5 % must be emission-free at tailpipe; from 2026 that figure rises to at least 32.5 %. Due to the long routes and sometimes longer distances from the depot, the vehicles will be designed for opportunity charging. This means that while having to carry a minimum number of passengers, the buses require as large a battery as possible, and a pantograph enabling them to charge quickly at the terminals.
This eliminates the need for solid-state batteries, which are a subject of some controversy. Our buses will have lithium NMC batteries. These can be charged with a power rating of up to 300 kW, whereas solid-state batteries can only be charged with about 70 kW. In other words, battery electric buses are currently more advantageous for us. At present, the concept of electric buses with opportunity charging and depot charging using a pantograph is the eco-friendliest, most inexpensive and most energy-efficient option for us to convert our bus fleet to zero emissions at tailpipe. This has been confirmed by studies by VerkehrsConsult DresdenBerlin (VCDB), among others. Fuel-cell buses are far less efficient overall and require an additional refuelling infrastructure. Trolleybuses that are run with overhead wires, but can lose contact with them for short distances, are subject to a very complicated approval process, need a very expensive infrastructure, have higher maintenance costs and cannot be relocated as flexibly.

Getting into conversation: Forum Mobilität Dresden – The city. Transport. And you. How can we make mobility people-friendly, climate-friendly, efficient and at the same time affordable? What mobility needs are there, and how can they be solved in future? What seemingly unbelievable steps may actually be
possible? Dresden Transport Museum will be discussing these questions and many others with you in its new series of events, “Forum Mobilität Dresden”.
The series kicks off with a panel discussion (in German): “The mobility transition. And how.” Join in from 7 to 8.30 p.m. on 5 April 2022 when the Forum Mobilität Dresden meets for the first time at the Transport Museum to address the question of how to make transport climate-neutral and cities more liveable while still keeping people mobile. With Andreas F. Rook chairing, the panel will include Prof. Dr. Harald Welzer (director of the FUTURZWEI foundation for future viability), Andreas Rade (head of the Politics & Society section at the German Association of the Automotive Industry), Marion Tiemann (climate activist, Greenpeace), Anne Klein-Hitpaß (head of the mobility research section at the German Institute of Urban Affairs) and Andreas Hemmersbach (head of Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe AG). Pilot carried away by the Elbe No, there hasn’t been a spectacular emergency landing on the Elbe, thank goodness. But having spent many years on the world’s runways, Roland Koch has settled down in Dresden as a ferryman for the DVS – and taken to his job on the Elbe like a duck to water.
Roland is the man at the wheel taking passengers across the river.
Born in Jena, Roland Koch grew up near an airfield in Zwickau. Watching the gliders there as a little boy, he dreamt of flying too. And many years later, when he was called up for
the army, his dream would come true. He decided to become an officer, which also gave him the opportunity to become a pilot.
And that’s how things could have gone on for Roland Koch – but after an illness, he could no longer make it through the strict health test. His service as a pilot came to an abrupt end after 35 years and 22,500 flying hours, with no plan B. “I was in a dark place. It was one of the hardest times of my life, both for me and my family.”

“Then I saw the job offer for a ferryman”, Roland goes on. “I already had a sports boat licence. Suddenly, this idea was in the room that I could spend the second part of my career on the Elbe.” He applied for retraining and made a good impression. Everything was set for his new start. “I went back to school again at the age of 55”, he laughs. * Nationale Volksarmee

“Flying was my dream, but I wasn’t happy as a professional soldier in the NVA”, Roland Koch relates. “But I was lucky. The East German state airline was in urgent need of pilots for civil air traffic and I was one of the ten people they selected.” Roland was given an honourable discharge from the army, then employed by Interflug and trained to fly the Tupolev Tu-134. He went on to fly to Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and the Soviet Union. Then the Berlin Wall fell. “Luckily, well-trained pilots were also needed in the reunified Germany. I was able to keep flying. First with Germania, then with Air Berlin.”

Get into the countryside and explore the region 22 April is the VVO Discovery Day and the ZVON KOMM’RUM Day. After a two-year break, things are getting going again: on VVO Discovery Day (Entdeckertag), the 12 companies in the Upper Elbe Transport Association (VVO) are inviting you to take some great trips by train, tram, bus and ferry.
All you need is a one-day family pass for just one fare zone, costing €10.60. On our Discovery Day, it will take you a lot further: using this ticket for two adults and four schoolchildren aged under 15, you can explore the entire VVO network – from Altenberg to Riesa and from Sebnitz to Hoyerswerda.
On that day, you can also ride on Dresden’s hillside railways for free using the one-day family pass. On the Meissen sightseeing tour, the Lößnitzgrundbahn, Weißeritztalbahn steam railways and the Kirnitzschtalbahn tramway, you pay the reduced fare only, and the four schoolchildren aged under 15 travel for free.
At the same time, KOMM’RUM (“get around”) Day is taking place in the neighbouring ZVON network, serving Upper Lusatia and Lower Silesia. That also makes it really cheap to go on trips throughout eastern Saxony, starting in the VVO area. Passengers with a VVO one-day

suspension railway, constructed as an elevated monorail based on the design by the engineer Eugen Langen. Despite being the world’s oldest hillside suspension railway, the Schwebebahn still travels the 274-metre route effortlessly. On the roughly five-minute trip, you are lifted a height of 84 metres.
