Many people recognize what their parents parents did—and still do—for them only when they have children of their own. Can people gain this awareness earlier? And, if so, how?

The Sefer HaChinuch explains that gratitude is at the root of the mitzvah of honoring parents: “One should recognize that his parents are the reason he exists in this world.” For this alone he is indebted to them—a debt that he can never repay.

If we do not wean ourselves from our childish vision of “the world was created for my comfort,” we develop a debilitating feeling of entitlement. Kibbud av va’eim is not based on how much my parents gave me, nor how much time they spent with me. The commandment to honor parents was given to the generation that lived in the Wilderness, where parents were not responsible to provide for their children’s needs. “Honor your father and

mother as Hashem . . . commanded you.” The words “as Hashem commanded you” are placed in this pasuk to stress that the primary, compelling reason for our fulfillment of this mitzvah is because it is Hashem’s command. This means that we are obligated to feel gratitude to our parents, and if we find that difficult to do, we must work on it. One way to cultivate a grateful heart is to write down the blessings we enjoy in life and the people who have helped us along the way.

2As children, we tend to view our parents as the givers and providers and come to expect their care almost as a right. This leads to resentment when our expectations are not met. How can we move past that resentment so that we can fulfill our obligation to our parents and live b’shalom, honoring them with a full heart?

The founding fathers of the American Colonies informed its citizens in the Declaration of Independence about their inalienable rights. Webster’s defines “inalienable” as “incapable of being surrendered,” and—therefore—certainly these rights shouldn’t be relinquished! This concept of inalienable rights became the guiding spirit of the Western world and beyond.

What does our Torah say about inalienable rights? The Torah never discusses rights, only obligations: the obligation of the seller, the buyer, the tenant, the landlord, and so on. But what does it matter? Rights confer obligations and obligations confer rights. What difference does it make where we start? It makes all the difference. A society that begins with rights creates a culture that focuses on taking and receiving, whereas a society that begins with obligations creates a culture that focuses on giving.

In a society that’s preoccupied with getting and possessing, contentment is difficult to attain. When what we feel is owed to us doesn’t materialize—immediately, in full, and exactly to our liking—the outcome is, as we are witnessing, discontented, disgruntled sons and daughters. How do we contend with this discontent that we see around us? Once we identify the source of our thinking, recognizing it as a non-Torah approach to life, we can begin our journey in a new direction. We can immerse ourselves in the life-giving waters of our Holy Torah, our mesorah, and our Shulchan Aruch, which tell us that we do owe, and then tell us what that debt is and how to pay it.

3What criteria can help an adult child find the right balance between obligations to parents and obligations to spouse and children?

A man, after he marries, remains fully obligated in all three aspects of honor: in thought, in speech, and in deed. However, if caring for his parents upsets the tranquility in the home, shalom bayis comes first. It is wise for a person to clarify if the general rule applies in his particular situation, since there may be halachic exceptions.

A husband should make every effort to have his wife partner with him in this mitzvah. The reasons are many: (1) he has a mitzvah to honor his parents, and it’s her zechus to help him fulfill that obligation, just as she would want to help him in his other spiritual endeavors; (2) a married woman has an obligation to honor her in-laws (Shulchan Aruch 240:24); (3) this mitzvah is a merit for the family. The Torah enumerates two promises (Devarim 5:16): “so that your days will be lengthened and so that it will be good for you”; and (4) it’s important for the children’s chinuch to model this mitzvah in action.

A man’s obligation of reverence—to refrain from demeaning or offensive behavior and demeaning or contradictory speech—also remains the same after marriage.

A married woman is obligated fully in two aspects of honor: in thought, meaning she must maintain the proper attitude, and in speech, meaning that she must speak respectfully to and about her parents. However, in the area of deeds, which encompasses service and personal care, her obligation comes with a qualifier: She’s exempt when the assistance her parents require would clash or conflict with her responsibilities as a married woman. Her obligation of reverence remains the same as it was when she was unmarried.

It is proper for a parent to forgive his son or daughter in order to lessen the Heavenly judgment on the child (Pele Yo’etz). According to Sefer Chassidim (152), G-dfearing parents should forgive their children (in their hearts) even when the child is not aware that he has been forgiven. When a married son or daughter finds it extremely difficult to comply with a parental request (feeling that compliance will cause a major loss), but the parent, on the other hand, feels it’s not correct to concede on this issue, it is a fortunate home that has a rav to turn to.

5How would you motivate someone who has a longstanding poor relationship with his or her parents to repair the situation?

The Gemara speaks of Rabi Tarfon’s incredible devotion to his mother. Yet Rabi Elazar, in discussing how much we must honor our parents, says, “If you really want to see what it means to honor a parent, go and ask Dama ben Nesinah [a Roman mayor and army commander].” What made his acts so great? Rabi Tarfon had a fine mother. Dama didn’t. Dama had a mentally unbalanced mother who accosted and

into this world to accomplish something that no one else can. We are given our own unique circumstances, the “props” of our lives, tailor-made for us to bring out our potential and help us fulfill this mission. The challenge our parents provide us by being who they are gives us opportunities to grow where we have been planted. It is like a personalized character-development program. Each situation calls for improvement in different character traits—one may call for silence, another for alacrity, yet another for compassion. Not to covet is an integral part of our belief in a Creator, Who is running a purposeful world. This is the basis for acceptance of our parents, who are custom-made for us. Our task is to turn to Hashem sincerely and say, “You have given me imperfect parent(s) that You know are perfect for me. May I earn a long life to figure out why.”

Of course, the Torah imposes obligations in bein adam lachaveiro for all human relationships. These also apply to parents with regard to their children. The Shulchan Aruch focuses on areas that deserve special warning. Parents may not beat their children (Shulchan Aruch 240:20). “Beating” includes verbal attacks. The warning against paining others with words applies even with a person’s own children. Tanach and Gemara are full of severe warnings about causing pain with hurtful words, yet who can claim that he has not pained others with his inconsiderate comments? Harried parents, who do love and care for their children, will almost certainly make mistakes. That is not our discussion here. We are discussing debilitating, crushing insults. There is never justification for a pattern of humiliation, mockery, or toxic criticism.

When conflicts arise involving parents or in-laws, both husband and wife should pray to Hashem to give them the wisdom and the desire to resolve the difficulties and achieve a peaceful solution. When the point of contention can’t be resolved, they should jointly consult a Torah authority. 4

What considerations can help parents avoid impinging on their married children’s shalom bayis?

Parents should consider the child’s level of ability before making a request or setting a standard. A parent should ask himself, “For this child, will this be a heavy yoke? Will it be overly demanding or cause him to stumble?”

This is a major principle of the Shulchan Aruch (240:1920), which applies to all children, married or single.

Look at sons and daughters who were given difficult parents, and watch how they overcome the challenges. In the two tablets of the Aseres Hadibros, we can learn important messages from the parallel placement of the commandments. The fifth commandment tells us to honor our father and mother. The parallel to that on the second side is “Do not covet; do not be jealous.” What’s the connection? From the millions of souls, from the tremendous pool of possible parents, Hashem chose the ones that are best matched to our neshamah

When a parent—for whatever reason—doesn’t see the pain he is causing, when a child is too intimidated by harsh words or harsh hands to explain to his parent how hurt he is, when the second parent either emulates this harmful behavior or lacks the ability to prevent the mistreatment, then ideally an influential person should be asked to intercede.

Additionally, a child can be encouraged to turn to a teacher, rav, counselor, or other adult for guidance and assistance. When children share their pain, many benefits can result: They can hear advice on how to deal with the existing situation and find ways to prevent future pain. Sometimes just accessing a sympathetic ear can go a long way in relieving a child’s distress. The direction should always be “to reconcile parents with children and children with parents.” Sons and daughters of all ages want and need a relationship

with their parents. They may need help in figuring out how to make it work. It is sad to say that in exceptional cases, after having attempted alternative solutions, a child may be compelled to distance himself from a parent (or parents). He may be advised to avoid contact as much as necessary, particularly when it affects his physical or emotional wellbeing and, in the case of married children, when it disturbs the couple’s shalom bayis. Because it is a serious and consequential decision to close the door on a parent, even partially, it is essential that such a determination be made only with rabbinic approval and guidance. Even when distance is required, hopefully it need not be completely nor forever.

6How can a child honor and respect parents who seem unsuccessful in their own lives?

Respecting parents in three ways—in attitude (thought), word, and behavior—brings the Shechinah and the accompanying blessing into our lives. A person cannot expect his words and actions to be proper if his attitude toward his parents is one of disrespect and belittling (zilzul). Our attitude directs our behavior and forms our words. It is a child’s job to discover and then concentrate on his parents’ strengths and virtues, and if possible even their uniqueness. This means looking for reasons to admire his parents despite what he perceives as their shortcomings.

For example, here is how one son learned to find the value in his father’s extremely frugal ways: My father is the type who goes around the block ten times to find a parking meter that still has time left in it. He and my mom mostly buy in thrift shops. My father can’t understand why we would want to buy new appliances, new beds, or a new couch rather than looking for secondhand items. This approach is hard for some of my siblings and their spouses. As for me, I’m not at all like my father, but I understand him, and because of this, I can avoid annoying him. For example, recently, he offered to buy me a new suit and asked me how much it would cost. If I had told him even a low-end price, I knew he’d hit the roof. So I just made up a price that I figured he could handle, and then I would pay for the rest.

I understand that my father isn’t like most people. The best thing for all of us children is to accept his nature and appreciate the fact that because my father has lived like

this, he has been able to lead a stable, responsible life, stay out of debt, and never ask anyone for help.

When a son—or daughter—has complaints about his parents’ actions, he should invest serious effort to understand their point of view so that their worthiness is not diminished in his eyes. In this way, the child can develop the correct mindset for fulfilling his obligations of honor and reverence.

When we view our parents with the proper perspective of gratitude, a lifetime of dissatisfaction can disappear. The letter below describes one such experience:

To you, this letter may look identical to the hundreds that you receive, but to me this letter is so, so much. It’s the reflection of the enormous change you’ve brought about in me.

I’ve always had a hard time with kibbud av va’eim.

I never actively disrespected my parents—I help out at home, I usually don’t yell or argue, and I would be considered a “good daughter.” But inside, I didn’t respect my parents for who they are, as people. I wouldn’t ask them for advice, nor did I feel that my essence is a product of them.

I came to your class and I couldn’t listen. It was hard (for different reasons) to absorb that I should respect them. You told us to write a hakaras hatov letter, and I never did. But you gave us one tip, one tip that I listened to and gained much from—“Try one week of looking at your parents with a good eye.” I felt like I didn’t have much to lose, so I tried it. I made an active point of spending about two minutes each day thinking about my parents positively—where they came from, why they are who they are, what’s special about them.

It didn’t just get easier to think of good things as the days went on—it became more automatic. I learned to look at my parents and see them as good people, to respect them for who they are. I learned to realize how much they do for me. I’ve changed so much and have so much gratitude to you for helping me become like this.

May we each merit to see the good in those who gave us life and to live b’shalom—parents and children, together. And may we see the day very soon when every family in Klal Yisrael will walk together to greet Mashiach!

DOES IT MATTER ANYMORE?

The Levin* family was planning Zaidy Levin’s eightieth-birthday celebration. Who, they wondered, should they invite? How about all those cousins of his that show up at weddings?

Shoshana, one of the granddaughters, and her husband, Chezky, took charge of locating the long-lost members of Zaidy’s family. One evening she reached Zaidy’s older cousin Benny, who lived a few miles away in Queens.

“I’d love to come,” Benny told her. “I haven’t seen your Zaidy in years!”

“That will be great,” Shoshana replied. “Do you know of anyone else I should invite? Who would be a real surprise for him?”

“Well, there’s our cousin Yankel,” Benny replied. “He and your Zaidy haven’t seen each other in decades.”

But then he began to backtrack. “No, maybe not. He, um, he probably won’t be able to come. He’s in an assisted-living home in Lakewood. Better not to mention it to him.”

Cousin Yankel to the party. He seemed surprised at the invitation but agreed to attend.

On the day of the party, as the crowd began to fill the room, Zaidy was overwhelmed. “All this, for me?” he asked. Moments later, Yankel walked in with his aide.

Zaidy’s face registered shock. He was sweating and trembling. Clearly, the two cousins were not just distant, but estranged.

“It’s been too long,” Yankel told Zaidy. Slowly, Zaidy nodded.

“I don’t even remember why we stopped talking,” Yankel said wryly.

“Me neither,” Zaidy replied. “Who cares?”

They embraced in tears and sat together at the head table, laughing and talking like old friends.

A Cell Phone Wake-Up Call

The speaker was standing at the podium when Shmuel entered the packed hall. His friend, Meir, was sitting in the first row. Shmuel nodded at Meir and found a seat.

The speaker, a famous Rosh Yeshivah, began his lecture, and soon the entire audience was listening in complete silence. Suddenly, the ring of a cell phone interrupted the quiet. Shmuel turned to the source of the noise, wondering who could be so inconsiderate.

It was Meir’s phone! Meir stood up and left the room, the cell phone glued

to his ear. How rude! Don’t people know that they should turn off their cell phones before a speech? And especially in front of such an important Rosh Yeshivah!

Shmuel tried to think more positively. Maybe Meir left his phone on by mistake? Soon, Shmuel noticed Meir returning to his seat.

Fifteen minutes later, the same ringtone broke into the speech again. Meir again left the room and then This scene repeated itself twice more, and every time, Shmuel felt

What’s the real story?

When the speech was over, Shmuel headed toward Meir to tell him just how rude he had been. But then he saw Meir handing the cell phone to the Rosh Yeshivah.

Shmuel followed Meir to the door and asked, “Was that the Rosh Yeshivah’s cell phone that kept ringing?”

“Yes,” Meir replied. “He asked me to hold it for him and to leave the ringer on and pick up if anyone called. You know his wife is sick, right?”

No. Shmuel had no idea.

“Anyway,” Meir continued, “the Rosh Yeshivah was worried that he would not be reachable if an emergency came up. He told me to sit in the front row so he would hear the phone ring. When he saw me return to my seat, he knew everything was fine.”

HOW COULD HE IGNORE HIS BABY?

Ruthy and Freida were coming home from Israel, settling into their seats as the other passengers boarded. They noticed Leah, holding a cranky baby, squashing into a middle seat between two large men. Poor woman! She’d be stuck in that seat for the next twelve hours!

Then, they noticed a frum was sitting in the aisle seat in the row behind Leah. The man spoke to Leah briefly and then

As the flight wore on, Ruthy and Freida noticed that the baby was giving her mother a hard time. She wouldn’t settle down.

“You’d think the father would take the baby for a while,”

Freida said to Ruthy. “How can he just sit there?”

“Look at him!” added Ruthy. “He’s off in dreamland!”

Whenever they caught Leah’s eye, they gave her a smile to boost her spirits. They pitied the poor girl who was married to such a selfish man.

WHAT’S THE REAL STORY?

The man who changed seats with Leah wasn’t her husband. He was a kind-hearted Jew who was willing to endure twelve uncomfortable hours to give a mother and her child the space they desperately needed.

Leah was traveling alone with her baby on a stand-by ticket that her husband, a kiruv rabbi, had been given by one of his students. She had used the ticket to visit an elderly relative in Israel, and since stand-by tickets don’t allow the passenger to choose a seat, she was stuck in the middle on the way home.

The Scent That Saved the Seder

The Green Seder was in full swing.

The family had settled into their places around the beautiful table. Everyone and everything was as clean, pure, new, and bright as can only be on the first night of Pesach. Surrounded by their children and grandchildren, Adina Green* and her husband were filled with nachas.

Just as everyone sang, “Kol dichfin yeisei v’yeichol,” inviting the poor to come to the Seder, they heard a knock on the front door. Although the Greens often had guests, no one else was expected that night.

It was Brunia Shneid, a lonely, elderly woman who lived nearby. Brunia could no longer take proper care of herself, and she thought of Mrs. Green, who was always kind to her, as

a friend. With no place to go for the Seder, she had come to the Green home and, of course, they invited her in. Mrs. Green gave her a seat right next to her own.

But soon, the grandchildren began leaving the table. The adults squirmed in their chairs, looking uncomfortable. Mrs. Green knew what the problem was. Brunia had a terrible odor. Would the Seder have to be ruined for the sake of a chesed? Mrs. Green’s creative mind and her kind heart worked together quickly.

“You know, on Rosh Hashanah we eat apples and honey to have a sweet year,” she told Brunia. “And on Pesach, when the smell of Gan Eden comes into our house, our family has a special minhag of spraying perfume in the air.” She got a bottle of perfume, and— making it seem like a special ceremony— she sprayed all around, making sure to include Brunia in the mist.

That night, the Green’s modest Flatbush home truly smelled like Gan Eden.
